Howdy, I'm Respheal (aka Res) (she/her).

I'm getting back into writing. I might also draw once a decade or so. I'm on Ao3! Summaries of my fanfics live under the cut. I love love love comments and art and jabbering about them <3 Send me asks to get a way-too-verbose response!

Ardyn as the Warrior of Darkness

Get ready folks because I have a fun theory that I’ve been discussing with a friend fueled by Shadowbringers hype. That theory is that Noctis is (obviously) FFXV’s Warrior of Light--the Chosen King of Light, but Ardyn is the Warrior of Darkness--the Chosen King of Darkness.

Spoilers for Final Fantasy III, XV, and Episode Ardyn.

Okay, first let’s just dispel something incredibly important, while Final Fantasy  XV has a lot of Christian undertones, Final Fantasy’s concepts of light and dark have always been rooted in eastern beliefs, which is to say light is not always good and dark is not always evil. They’re a balance. Think yin and yang, acting in harmony, balancing each other out. 

Let’s begin with the roots of the critical harmony of light and dark originating in Final Fantasy III. Light and Dark exist in a harmony, balancing each other out. When one side begins to overwhelm the other, the Crystals summons forth Warriors of whatever side is faltering to bring about balance and harmony to the world. (If that sounds familiar to us westerners not as familiar with Taoist principles, Star Wars used this concept with the Chosen One prophesied to bring about balance to the force.) In the time of FFIII we play in, darkness has begun to overtake light and the Light Crystals calls forth four Warriors of Light to drive back the darkness. That’s a massively oversimplified version of the story, but it’s enough for us to explain this.

As you progress to the end game, you encounter and team up with the Warriors of Darkness. I’m sure many of you will think they’re villains and evil, but that’s not true. They too were called forth when light threatened to overtake the world and threatened the balance and bring about the end. It’s here we learn that Light and Dark must remain in balance and that should one side grow too strong, the opposing side calls forth external aid to restore balance. 

This is once again brought up in the new expansion for Final Fantasy XIV, Shadowbringers. The light has grown too strong in that world and now you must become a Warrior of Darkness to restore balance. Once again, a painfully oversimplified story but I’m not super knowledgable about FFXIV and this exposition is getting rather winded.

So let’s talk about the man of the hour: the Adagium, Ardyn Lucis Caelum.

Ardyn was chosen to be king and yet, so was Noctis. The throne seats only one, does it not? Perhaps. With Episode Ardyn, we learn that Ardyn’s true calling is to spread darkness across the land, not dispel it. Rather odd since he was to be “Chosen King”. 

But, hold on. He wasn’t the Chosen King after all. That title was intended for Noctis, the “Chosen King of Light”. Or... perhaps, no one said the rest of the title intended for Ardyn, “The Chosen King of Darkness”. Looking back at the tasks laid before the Warriors of Darkness, spreading darkness is definitely the mission of the Warriors of Darkness but only to restore balance.

It’s my theory that Ardyn and Noctis were both chosen to be kings in a time where neither light nor dark were reigning, but utter chaos. The harmony of Eos was completely out of whack and it was constantly swaying between light and dark, and the only way to restore it was to basically have the two sides annihilate each other, and I mean annihilate in the scientific sense where each counteract each other to a point of null (it’s like adding a positive value to a negative value with equal absolute values -3 + 3 to get 0). In fact, both were called, word for word “sacrificial lambs”.

But in order for this Batman Gambit to work, fate would torment Ardyn, turning him bitter against the line that would bear the Warrior of Light, making him so blind to his hatred, he wouldn’t resist the fate being force-fed to him and drown the world in darkness. Meanwhile Noctis would be conditioned, thanks to two millennia of conditioning to want to fully dispel the darkness. Toss in some white lies and lies by omission from Bahamut and the Oracles and you’ve got yourself two forces ready to utterly destroy each other.

And as a little bonus bit. While Noct kills Ardyn first, it’s just to get rid of the eternal night that consumed Eos. Noctis quickly then joins Ardyn in the afterlife, and mere moments after Ardyn’s essence is destroyed, Noctis soon shares the same fate, thus bringing the world back to a state of zero, and both chosen kings are no more.
