It's the day after our last post! May 17th! Hooray!
The NYU Game Center Spring Showcase was an absolute blast and we couldn't be happier with how it went. Everyone loved our setup (even the kids)! Each of us spent some time decapitated on the table, and it was so much fun to talk to people about the game from that perspective.
We also had 25 people fill out our Kill Me Cards at the event, and 21 of them managed to actually put their contact info on the card so we can reach out to them and clarify that we can kill them (in the video game).
We'll be showcasing again at Waffle Games 7.0 on June 22nd in NYC. Anyone that wants to be killed (in the video game) should come by and fill out a card, with CONTACT INFORMATION.

Closed starter for @raisedxbywolves
While Feyres first year as a Professor at NYU was in truth just as chaotic as it had been intimidating; she felt the most in her element she had ever felt. While there were a hand full of students and even a few staff members that each took it upon themselves to point out her otherness, she had made it through the Fall and winter and spring semesters without any questions regarding her mother. That in itself made every mark and triumph add up to one big win for her. The small brunette moved through the courtyard with an arm full of the lab manuals she would have to go over that evening. While she loved her new work that armful of booklets felt just a little heavier as the citrus warmth of the summer air caught the lose strands dark curls and rustled slight shiver through. As Feyre fought to manage snaking wrap of her air born hair her attention was drawn towards the dining hall that seemed to be drawing a crowd. Crowds were certainly not apart of her approved list of perfectly acceptable things to encounter in any given day (the title was a work in progress) She couldnt help the curiosity that lead her feet to set her astray from her rigid routine. Her eyes caught a banner just outside the double doors that shed stopped outside of. There was to be a showcase in the next hour or so In honor of the photographer Theo Wolfam .
Tumblr media
"Theo?"-- My Theo?" Feyre asked out loud to herself as she hafted the stacked booklets under her arm in hopes to find a more comfortable way to hold them as her eyes scanned the crowd for the start to the line.

Metempsychosis - SP23 Final 3D Moving Image Screening for Digital Bodies Class at NYU Tisch from Snow Yunxue Fu on Vimeo.
We invite you to a journey of Metempsychosis, an ancient Greek philosophical concept that speaks to the transmigration of the soul from one body to another, and it highlights the idea that our existence is not limited to our physical body. We intend to lead the audience to embark on an immersive journey into the world of digital simulacrums. The screening itself can be seen as an attempt to reconcile our symbiotic coexistence with a world beyond our biological sensation. Keep in mind the questions that are simultaneously embedded in the Metempsychosis “experience”: to what extent can we push our existence beyond our physical bodies? How do the blurring boundaries between the physical and digital worlds influence our self-perception? What role do digital simulacrums play in shaping our perception of reality and consciousness? ….
The screening is organized by the students from Professor Snow Yunxue Fu’s Emerging Media Studio - Digital Bodies (2023 Spring) course at NYU Tisch School of the Arts to showcase the final Digital 3D Moving Image Artworks. Digital Bodies is a studio class that examines and explores the current technological applications and conceptual implications of the post-photographic digital human 3D simulations.

Fic: Crush Into Me (10/?)
Summary:  Third year NYADA student, Kurt, returns to Lima for an internship coaching the Glee club. The leather jacket and eyebrow ring-clad senior, Blaine, thinks he’s cute.
slightly older teacher-ish!Kurt/ badboy!Blaine
One, Two, Three, Four, Five, Six, Seven, Eight, Nine
Day Ten (Kurt) (word: Transparent):
“Hey. Sorry I’m a bit late.” Blaine arrives at Kurt’s table at 5:03pm for their 5pm coffee date.
Kurt glances down at his phone where he has been scrolling his emails. Blah blah blah Second semester auditions for the spring showcase blah blah blah Karaoke night at the Spotlight Diner blah blah blah Dalton Academy Alumni Dinner and fundraiser blah blah blah Mercedes asking about next week’s Glee lesson.
“I don’t think 5:03 qualifies as late. Though you have rescued me from the monotonous boredom of my emails. Seems November hits and everyone wants my money or my time or sometimes both,” Kurt huffs out a laugh. “I literally attended Dalton Academy for one semester in junior year and they are inviting me to their alumni dinner. Anyways, enough of that,” Kurt shuts his phone. “You are not late. Not even fashionably. Though I do appreciate the red polo. Gives a bit of pop to your typical black.”
Blaine looks down at his uncharacteristically preppy clothing choice. “Hey, it’s not every day you go for coffee with the Glee club coach.” Kurt expected Blaine to arrive on the border of fashionably late and unacceptably late, play it cool and dismissive as he has. Instead, Blaine was on time. And apologized for it. And now, when he expects a wink at the almost flirty banter, Blaine is instead looking down, his cheeks slightly flushed. He waves his own statement away. “And I do appreciate it. It’s not so fun being the only out gay kid in school.”  Blaine looks up. Eyes bright and interested and cheeks still red. He is opening the conversation, actually trying, and seems to have dropped the bravado, at least today, for something more transparent and true. And that is way more attractive than Danny Zuko. Though he still has that leather jacket that does fit him very well. God, instead of reminding Blaine that they are here together as friends, it seems like he has to remind himself.
“Tell me about it. Coming out in my sophomore year was the hardest thing I ever did.”
“So why did you?”
“Survival really. I was already kind of in a glass closet,” Kurt gestures at himself. “My McQueen knockoffs gave me away. Already far out of the league of the Target-t-shirt wearing masses.”
“Naturally,” Blaine nods at Kurt’s outfit in appreciation. But it’s not too strong. It’s sweet. He sips his coffee.
“So when I realized I might have allies in Glee club, I took my chances. And it saved me, really. Even if I couldn’t slow dance at my prom with a real date, I still had people in my corner - like Mercedes. And we could pore over teen magazines together and imagine what life outside of Lima might be like.”
“Yeah,” Blaine nods. “I’m glad I have Santana. Though she’s not exactly sifting through muscle magazines with me.” Kurt laughs at the image. “I think I can manage just a few more months of being the mysterious guy under the bleachers until I can fly out of here.”
“And where do you fly to?”
“Boston, New York, San Francisco - NYU is my first choice but anywhere that will take me that will give me both a useful degree and a social life.”
“You likely do have to attend class to get into NYU, you know?” Kurt can’t help but tease him. All that attitude won’t be very interesting to anyone on the NYU admissions committee.
“Oh thanks for the advice, Mr. Hummel,” Blaine emphasizes. “But I do have straight A’s, and a grade 10 piano certificate to boot.”
“Huh,” Kurt nods, impressed again. “So it’s really a facade, this too cool for school image.”
Blaine shrugs. “I’m an enigma, I guess.” The line could be dismissive, or biting, but Blaine is sitting there, eyes open and warm.
“I guess you are.”

Campus Run-In | Fuinn
WHO: Quinn Fabray and Finn Hudson WHAT: Quinn and Finn meet at the NYU campus when they literally run into each other. Conversation and a possible date ensue. WHEN: Friday May 11, 2018 WARNINGS: None
To say Quinn was distracted was an understatement. If she wasn’t thinking about the Spring Showcase her studio was putting on, she was thinking about the last few performances she needed to get through before the end of the semester. She was following the familiar path to her final class for the day and dropped her eyes momentarily to adjust her purse and a moment was just long enough for her to lose focus before she collided with someone else who also seemed to be in a hurry. Annoyance was the first emotion that took over and it showed in the bite of her words. “You really should watch where you’re going.” When her eyes finally caught up to her mouth, she was surprised to see the badge on his collar stating he was a professor and immediately realized her mistake. “Sorry, Professor, it’s just been a long week.” His face was one she’d seen around campus before and she always thought it was a handsome one. She held her hand out, hoping he’d accept her attempt at an apology. “I’m Quinn Fabray, Masters student at TISCH, I don’t think we’ve had the pleasure.”
Since the moment Finn had finished his Master’s program, he’d all but lived on NYU’s campus in his capacity as an adjunct professor. If he wasn’t teaching he was sitting in on other seminars related to teaching practices, or tabling for some campus event or another or simply sitting in on classes taught by professors in the history department whom he deeply admired. If he wasn’t teaching most of his days on campus were spent running around from one meeting to another, or in pursuit of one project or another and he was on his way to collect copies for an event the department was holding when he collided (rather solidly) with someone else. A surge of worry erupted in his chest and hung there, clutching tightly at the space between his ribs while his eyes shifted restlessly over the face of the woman in front of him. Most of him was purely concerned that he might have hurt her in some way, and the rest of him was entirely captivated almost to the point of being unable to move or form a coherent thought. He glanced down at his badge and smiled, suddenly bashful, “No, please— you can call me Finn. I don’t have, like, tenure or anything,” He took her hand eagerly, his smile crinkling the corners of his eyes, “It’s a pleasure. Can I call you Quinn or do I have to stick to Miss Fabray?”
Quinn couldn’t help the smile that crept up on her face at Finn’s reply. Just a few words and Quinn already concluded that he was unlike any other college professor she’d met and she liked that. “Finn it is.” Her eyes momentarily dropped down the the hand that enclosed hers, noting how it wrapped around hers completely. She bit at her bottom lip as her eyes trailed back up to meet his in a fierce gaze before her lips turned at the corners to offer him another smile. “Quinn sounds so much better than Miss Fabray, I think we can stick with that.” A few more moments passed before she realized that her hand rested in his a little longer than appropriate but she pulled away without bringing too much attention to the sudden separation. “And regardless of how long my week was, I really shouldn’t have snapped at you like that.” Quinn was never apologetic, but she was resourceful and understood the perks that could come with being in the good graces of a college professor, regardless of if they had tenure or not, and his handsome features certainly didn’t hurt any. “If you’re up for it, Finn, you should really let me take you out for drinks some time. It’s the least I could do for bumping into you.”
College had given Finn a certain degree of confidence in himself when it came to interacting with new people: he wasn’t prone to stammering or awkward silences or any of the things that had plagued him as a teenager. Instead he was warm, and outgoing and eager to meet anyone who seemed interested in meeting him. His confidence was there, as far as he could tell, but he couldn’t remember the last time he’d made eye contact with someone and wondered how it was even humanly possible for someone to look like they’d been painted into the world rather than born into it. Quinn was almost painfully gorgeous and Finn felt, quite abruptly, that his tongue didn’t belong to him and he’d have no chance of actually speaking to her any longer if he couldn’t get it together before they parted. His adam’s apple bobbed when her eyes met his and a streak of desire flared through him to compliment her; to cobble together even a fraction of the words he knew into something that would let her know just how incredible an impression she was making on him already. “Lucky me, then. I’d feel like you were my student or something if I had to call you Miss Fabray,” A flush slipped steadily into his cheeks, and he fought to ignore the way his skin seemed to spark to life when Quinn’s fingers brushed against his palm and pulled away. He tilted his head at the invitation, a crooked smile curling at his lips while he spared a glance at his watch, “I’m actually done here for the day… unless you’re heading somewhere else? I can’t think of a better way to spend my afternoon than with you.”
“I’m curious, Finn. How does me not feeling like your student make you lucky?” she replied, her words accompanied with a teasing smirk. Talking to people was easy for Quinn and flirting even easier, even if she hardly had the opportunity to do so these days. But she was captivated enough by Finn’s presence and even more so by the flush on his cheeks to smile a little more than usual and capture his eyes with hers. If she didn’t think he was handsome before, his crooked smile was enough to convince her and for a moment she considered blowing off her last class and spending the afternoon with him. Perhaps in another time when she was young and careless, but she had too much experience and too much at stake, even for the first stranger in years who was able to pull a genuine smile from her. “As tempting as that is, I’m actually on my way to class right now and I have an important showcase this weekend I should prepare for. Perhaps sometime next week?” Quinn retrieved a pen from her purse and held Finn’s hand in hers once more, this time so that the back of his hand rested him her palm as she wrote her number in his palm. It was a little old fashioned but Quinn preferred it that way. “You should call me sometime this weekend so we can set that up.”
Finn laughed, a brief, bashful rumble in his chest as he crossed his arms over his chest and looked at Quinn openly, intense and bright. “Well, if you were my student… I definitely wouldn’t want to recognize that you’re incredibly beautiful, and I’m incredibly aware of it. Besides, I don’t go out with my students.” He quirked an eyebrow, his tone slipping into teasing easily. There was something incredibly easy about talking to Quinn and Finn realized all at once that it was a feeling he wouldn’t mind embracing a bit more than he usually did. If it meant that he saw more of Quinn, well, he couldn’t exactly complain. He offered her a lazy, unaffected shrug, holding a hand up in a gesture he hoped indicated he wasn’t at all put out that they’d have to schedule their outing for another time. “In that case, next week sounds perfect and I hope you have a wonderful class.” His expression conveyed nothing but warmth even as his brow furrowed when she took his hand again. He blinked rapidly to quell the surprise rushing through him before he offered Quinn yet another vibrant grin, “I will absolutely be doing that,” He paused, shifting on his feet for a moment before he leaned down and pressed the briefest of kisses to Quinn’s cheek. “Enjoy your class, Quinn.”
Quinn wasn’t a stranger to comments from men on her looks and it was always in a way that left a bad taste in her mouth. There was something in the way that Finn offered his compliments that was different, however, and instead of an uneasy feeling in her chest she was met with the unfamiliar feeling butterflies. “I see. You make a fair point and while it doesn’t really matter, I’d like to think you’d make an exception for me even if I was your student.” Quinn’s smile only grew as their conversation continued and while she wasn’t used to being turned down, she was still a bit relieved at his confirmation to contact her later. It was another feeling that was unfamiliar to her and she decided not to think on it too much, at least for the time being. “I look forward to hearing from you, Finn.” Quinn was momentarily stunned when she felt his lips barely grazed her cheek and it took everything in her to continue down the path without looking back. For the first time in a long time, Quinn had something new to look forward to.

Student New Works Festival: A Nelsonville Tale
Tumblr media
Written by Amanda Hanley
A Nelsonville Tale is a short one act movement-based theatre piece written and directed by Yu “Fish” Cui for Stony Brook’s Student New Works Festival. Yu Cui, aka Fish, is a graduating senior at SBU. Fish plans to attend NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts and be a part of the Graduate Musical Theatre Writing Program.
Her SNWF piece focuses on sexual abuse, and how the victims deal with the trauma. She felt that a lot of television and artistic work focus too much on the police cases and not on the victims. A Nelsonville Tale highlights this horrific experience through the mind of the victim, and places the audience in the mind of the abused.
Tumblr media
Fish got her inspiration from the Grimm’s fairy tale Little Red Riding Hood. While the piece is very modern, and showcases life and events in today’s society, there are subtle nods to the original fairy tale. For instance, the main character’s name is Ruby (Played by Xi “Cissy” Ge), and the villain is named Mr. Wolf (voiced by Tyler Plaskon). There are many other subtle nods to the fairy tale as well.
Tumblr media
A Nelsonville Tale is very movement heavy, and a lot of the story is told through sound, movement, and lighting. Actors will come out in morph suits and get very close to the audience. Similarly, actors sit with the audience and goad them into teasing the victim, showcasing the peer pressure of society. This unique staging makes the audience experience the PTSD and the distancing of the victim firsthand. Also, this piece is special in that it features an all-female cast. Mr. Wolf is just a voiceover played through speakers. The sound is played in a variety of places, thus keeping an air of mystery, fear, and suspense.
Tumblr media
The SNWF runs from April 27-30, 2017 and A Nelsonville Tale will be performed Thursday, April 27th at 9pm, Friday, April 28th at 9pm, and Saturday April 29th at 4pm. Tickets for A Nelsonville Tale can be purchased at the Staller Box Office. We hope to see you there!

Amanda Hanley [[email protected]] is a sophomore Theatre Arts Major, Chemistry Minor, on the Pre-Med track. She has been marketing for the Department of Theatre Arts for a year now, and is currently the Marketing Manager for Spring Awakening and A Nelsonville Tale. She has previously been seen in Pocket Theatre’s Cabaret, and will be seen in The SNWF piece Hunger.

Free Falling Into Queerness
youtube
Hailed as the German Brokeback Mountain (2005), Free Fall (2013) is about the relationship that blossoms between two police officers. Set in Germany, the movie follows Marc (Hanno Koffler) as his life slowly starts to “free fall”. Marc lives with his pregnant girlfriend, Bettina (Katharina Schüttler) and is training at a police academy. While at the academy, he meets and his roommates with Kay (Max Riemelt). After jogging in the forest together to help with Marc’s training, the two start a romantic affair. This relationship continues until Marc’s parents, Bettina, and the whole police unit that Marc and Kay work in find out. Marc’s life is completely changed at the end but, with Kay gone, Marc begins to rebuild the pieces of his life alone. While Free Fall achieves at constructing a heteronormative world that reflects our own and resisting common stereotypes, it fails in creating a deep relationship between the main characters and reinforces aggressive masculinity.
Tumblr media
Free Fall resists gender stereotypes while embracing common performances of masculinity. Judith Butler first defined gender as a performance, arguing “that it is performative - our gender is our expressions and behaviors (rather than those expressions and behaviors being the result of some underlying gender identity).” (Barker & Scheele, 2016, pg. 79). Gender is what a person does, not who they are. Marc and Kay reinforce the idea that men are aggressive in their relationships and with the people around them. The first introduction between Marc and Kay ends in a fight because of a training exercise that accidentally went farther than it needed to. Marc pushes Kay to the ground which causes Kay to spring back up, slapping Marc upside the head. At this point, the pair are only stopped from fighting with one another because their captain tells them to. The first time the pair actually kiss, it is done forcefully and aggressively. Kay pulls Marc in for a kiss even though Marc does not want to as evidenced by Marc shoving and pushing Kay away. This reinforces the dominant idea that men are supposed to be assertive with their love interest. In another scene, Kay tries to force a coming out confession out of Marc. Preceding this moment, Marc is driving when he sees Kay in his back mirror. After being spotted, Kay drives fast enough to cut in front of Marc. This was all due to the fact that Marc wasn’t responding or speaking to Kay for the past couple days. When Kay tries to convince Marc to come out, Marc punches him. The notion that men are aggressive are well and apparent in this movie but it isn’t present in just the representation of Marc and Kay.
Tumblr media
Gregor (Shenja Lacher) is a police officer and coworker of both Marc and Kay. He almost always comments on women he would like to sleep with, at one point stating that he “wouldn’t mind being locked up” by one of their female coworkers. Gregor is even surprised when another male coworker asks if he talks about anything else. After Kay is outed to the police unit, Gregor begins bullying Kay. Gregor makes a point to target Kay simply because he is homosexual. While waiting in line for lunch, Gregor pokes Kay’s bottom with a water bottle while stating that he wouldn’t let someone like Kay grab his balls. That remark prompts a fight between Gregor and Kay. Gregor performs typical norms of masculine gender by being aggressive and talking about women as sexual objects rather than people. Gregor, Marc, and Kay perform typical performances of masculine identity which emphasizes the idea that this is the way that men are supposed to act.
However, Free Fall succeeds in breaking gender stereotypes of gay men in movies. Films in the early twentieth century employed the use of gender inversion to represent homosexual characters. It was commonplace for a movie to “have the character act in defiance of traditional gender norms.” (Bernshoff & Griffin, 2004, pg. 6). Gay men would be portrayed as feminine. Neither Marc nor Kay are ever shown to be feminine at all during the movie. As I mentioned, they perform their gender in the way society expects men to act. Though there is fault in how the men reinforce typical male performances, the movie succeeds in straying away from characterizations movies ordinarily inflict on queer characters.
Tumblr media
The relationship between Marc and Kay is solely based on their physical attraction to one another. While Moonlight (2016) de-sexualized their gay male couple, Free Fall over sexualizes theirs. After Marc begins his love affair with Kay, almost every interaction between them either begins or ends with a kiss or sex scene. Throughout the movie, I never felt as if these two characters ever connected or truly fell in love with one another. This plays into the fact that “Too often, in our film and TV images, gays are narrowly depicted as either desexualized or over sexualized, making of gay sexuality either the sum total of a character’s identity, or alternately, the unspoken absence.” (Walters, pg. 2015, pg. 7). Kay does not have an identity outside of Marc, whether that means clubbing, doing drugs, jogging, or sleeping with him. Not only that, their relationship begins with Kay forcing himself onto Marc whether that was the tricked kiss or forced hand-job. This perpetuates the idea that homosexual characters just want to sleep around and are sexual deviants.
youtube
The world that Marc and Kay live in reflect our own heteronormative world. Heteronormativity assumes that everyone is straight and that their identity is fixed. Free Fall does a well enough job of showcasing the fluidity of sexuality. Throughout the movie, Marc never admits or outright confesses that he is gay. This coincides with gay, lesbian, and queer studies that argue “that sexuality is a social construct, thereby challenging the definition as part of (a fixed) identity, rather than as an activity one might engage in.” (Andersson, 2002, pg. 2). Sexuality is fluid and Marc’s relationship with Kay showcases that. At the beginning of the movie, Marc is happy with Bettina and their relationship is framed in domestic bliss. Their parents approve of the relationship, even though some may frown upon the fact that the couple became pregnant outside of marriage. On the other hand, Marc’s parents actively discourage Kay from seeing Marc again because they do not believe that it is right for them to be together.
Gregor openly berates Kay for being queer and starts a fight with him in a cafeteria in the police academy. When Gregor and Kay fight one another, the only person to step forward to stop it, aside from their captain, was Marc. Everyone in the cafeteria heard what Gregor said or saw what he did but no one did much in the way of stepping in. Both of these examples are of family rejection and discrimination which are “caused by cultural views that anything not straight or cisgender is abnormal or even dangerous” (Cochrane, 2016). Following Marc throughout this movie and seeing what he goes through because he’s considered different by his society highlights the serious consequences of the heteronormative world. The goal of Free Fall was to explore “the difficulty of existing outside of heteronormative and socially prescribed life plans in present-day Germany.” (Orich, 2015). In that aspect, the movie succeeded in showcasing the trials and tribulations that one individual must go through in a heteronormative world.
Tumblr media
While the film did succeed in a few areas, I still tried to keep a critical eye on the way the relationship between Marc and Kay developed. At no point during the movie did I feel as if the two ever fell in love with one another, which seems silly considering how adamant Kay becomes that he loves Marc. Their relationship never felt convincing to me. The world that was built around them looked like real life and they performed their gender as typically men are expected to act but they never convinced me that this was at all something worth fighting for. Though I am only a young heterosexual woman of color, I want to see more representation and relationships that have believable romantic progression. I’m also tired of gay couples having sad endings in movies. I applaud the movie for showing audiences around the world what life is like for gay men in Germany while resisting certain stereotypes but I still criticize it for reinforcing common masculine performances and under developing their main couple.

Yesenia/En la Escena . On The Scene   What was different about your Spring 2019 that you hadn’t done before?   Raul Peñaranda: The fact that I presented a little preview of my upcoming swimsuit line that I'm designing in a collaboration with my photographer Justin Bellucci and that will be launch next year at Miami Swim Week. Also the new format on runway show where each model celebrates individuality and show their personality to complement the looks of the collection.   Yesenia De Avila: What was your inspiration for this collection?   RP: It was "CELEBRATION" a simply yet powerful emotion that celebrates the beauty and power of all women on today's world. Week 11 (12?) Devlog
M: This week I was enjoying time in the shadow realm and making some assets. Prep work for the NYU spring showcase is also underway. We have a good portion of our materials in the works and I get to do some illustration (yay!!!!!!!!). Aside from that, I’m in the process of locking in and did some work on the dev pages I should’ve gotten done a while ago. I’m onto the office scene! Here are a couple sketches:

I: I've been doing a bunch of random things the past few weeks. I've been fixing a ton of bugs in our functioning game scenes and adding small juice items, such as blood particles and a reddening effect to the background. In terms of progress things, I'm currently working on the dev profile pages for SewnIn and I have some SFX to implement. I foleyed some SFX for joints popping out of their sockets, joints squishing together, and sawing bones. I will be recording more murdering SFX next week :3. Anyway, here's what the dev pages currently look like:

S: Not much has changed in my work since I last posted. I've squashed a few bugs, and continued to work on the task backlog and office view. One of these days very soon I will have big and flashy things to show you all. But until then my work will continue to be slow going and in the shadows.
