Featuring one of the scenes that was most iconic in my childhood, and one of the best line changes I made in this whole fic.

“So it would seem,” the man in black agreed, stepping forward.

Pressing the knife closer to Satine’s throat, Saxon warned him, “Move forward again and she’ll die.”

The man in black stopped in his tracks. “Surely there’s some way we can discuss this,” he suggested.

“Not in the way you mean,” Saxon said. “I’ve faced people who wield those sabers before-- I’m no match for a master of them, and you’re no match for my brains.”

“I think I’d like to be the judge of that,” the man in black began, moving towards the man again.

“You’re killing her,” Saxon warned him, putting pressure on the blade. A dark bead of blood appeared at Satine’s throat, and the duchess caught her breath, freezing in place.

The man in black did likewise. “Alright, then,” he said. “I challenge you to a battle of wits.”
