OC-tober Zodiac Edition Day 16 The party lent a hand to a stranger on the road who's cart broke a wheel while traveling between cities. Virk the Bugbear fortune teller thanked them for their services and offered her own in return. Each party member got to ask a fortune for themselves, some light-hearted and sweet, others foreboding and ominous.

'2. How easy is it for your character to laugh?'

Virk is always laughing. dude is in a constant state of happy-go-lucky attitude with a side of finding himself absolutely hilarious and a dash of genuine enthusiasm about the world. some would even argue that he laughs too much! that maybe it's not funny that he used some sort of weird smoke thing in a crowded room and turned half the guard into hens. that it's not funny that he's being placed into guard custody and handcuffed. virk this is serious virk you're under arrest. virk please you can't keep doing this. virk stop flirting. virk. third time this week how do you keep doing this

'3. How do they put themselves to bed at night (reading, singing, thinking?)'

he doesn't necessarily sleep, but for his equivalent he sits back and looks up and thinks his thoughts and nobody's really sure what he's thinking about--just that sometimes he's smiling quietly and it's actually really nice, and sometimes, he's not smiling, and it just looks so strange on him.

'25. What are their thoughts on marriage?'

this is a fun one. i like this question a lot. this is a really good question. virk has a very interesting stance on the concept of marriage.

he has, genuinely, no bullshit i'm not joking i'm 100% serious here, no idea what it is.

yeah so uh virk and jo’en met by virk having a bit of a teleporting and knocking over a lamp incident in a barn that meant it burned down, and like the report was made and jo’en, captain of the guard, was signing off on an official warrant for arrest because at this point the crime rate was so low it was kind of a big deal. basically dude of a very weird description (dressed for completely the wrong weather? an elf maybe, but…? kind of stood out like a sore thumb?), he was just supposed to be arrested so he could have a trial about it as soon as possible so it would get resolved because a whole barn burnt down overnight.

anyways virk ends up needing something specifically from the Material Plane again, and goes back to this town a second time and he could really use a map. ends up zapping into the basement of a building that looks like a weird courthouse, wanders around until he gets like. a Vibe. and stops at a door and opens it and there’s this weirdly young dude (captain? he couldn’t be older than thirty, what’s that about?), and he’s like eh whatever. hey man do you have a map

and jo’en is like uh. and looks down at the arrest warrant he’s signing with this dudes likeness and up at this dude who’s dressed in adventurer gear including like armor and a weapon and goes uh. hey weird question did you burn a barn down

and virk goes ehhhhh who can say haha it be like that! anyways you got a map? what’s your deal?

and jo’en goes i. i’m the captain. of the guard. i’m the leader of the executive branch. and you’re the guy who burned that barn down. you. you’re like under arrest like you understand that you’re under arrest

and virk goes yeah okay that’s cute. haha yeah you’re adorable mister desk worker guy. yeah you’re gonna arrest me? fuckin bet dude i’d love to see that

and then uhhhhh jo’en goes alright this man walked into my office with a weapon ready to be drawn and has all but admitted he committed an act of arson and is also currently laughing at me and fuckin books him and virk goes oh Shit!! you actually can????? because that doesn’t happen

Hello!! I’d love to hear about your ocs, Jo’en and Virk!

"A) Why are you excited about this character?"

both Virk and Jo'en have similar reasons for being really exciting to me overall, just in terms of being vessels for some interesting character motivations and explorations--they basically exist to me as a series of opposing but interlinked themes, the most prominent ones being Fight/Freeze vs Flight/Fawn, internal vs external motivations, free will vs predestination, and most noticeably, Promise of Safety vs Call to Adventure.

also because Virk and Jo'en as well-meaning but ultimately unlucky sap and world's most neurotic overcompetent dipshit respectively are very very fun for me.

"B) What inspired you to create them?"

Virk and Jo'en were always supposed to sort of be two opposing sides of some kind of moral argument, with their main issues always being that they consider themselves, in some way, exceptions to their own rules. self-awareness is neither of their strong suits, even if they take turns seeming more well adjusted than they actually are.

"D) Have they always had the same physical appearance, or have you had to edit how they look?"

okay. so Virk has had exactly one redesign ever, and it was because i wanted to update for an upgrade i gave to his gear as things progressed, and honestly i'm not even sure i like the update. Virk is probably one of the oldest character designs i have, and over that time, the only changes are me learning how to draw certain things better. i don't even know. i had way too much fun making him the first time and he hasn't changed even once. i think i've changed the color of his clothes a little? and his eye shape is a little different? but overall, seriously, he's been this way for so so long.

Jo'en was revamped pretty hard, though, his face shape is different and his outfit design is WAY different and his build is nothing like i originally made him at all. also, way back when i made Virk, for a minute i considered making him blond which i literally can't even imagine now but back then it fit. imagine if he was blond. vox machina would truly be quaking
