i call it… momo relationship chart. rhymes with grug (will put a typed version under the cut since my handwriting is so booty cheeks and is Really Small Here)
Tumblr media
MOMO’S RELATIONS, SORTED BY HOUSE AND NOT BY ORDER ON PAGE:
FROSTHEIM
MOMO->JIN: Don’t really get the guy. Yuri’s gotta hate him for a reason, but I’ve never seen him face-to-face.
JIN->MOMO: …?
MOMO->TOHMA: Jin’s lapdog. A traitor too, from what I’ve heard. A two-faced, no-good, bossy germ.
TOHMA->MOMO: Quite deranged. Hangs a select few of anomalies that they believe are beautiful.
MOMO->LUCAS: Someone worthy of being called a ghoul. Strong, determined, and willing to put his mind to protecting people against anomalies. Too bad he’s a brit.
LUCAS->MOMO: Interesting… A ghoul that didn’t make a pact? No, a “replica ghoul”, you say? A shapeshifter, too? I hope to meet them someday!
MOMO->KAITO: …They’re really just letting people in here. Loud, but not a bad guy.
KAITO->MOMO: AAAGH!!!! A M-M-M-MONSTER!!! THEY’LL KILL AND GUT ME AND TAKE MY FACE AND REPLACE ME AND I’LL NEVER LIVE AGAIN OR THEY’LL LOCK IN THE MORTKRANKEN BASEMENT OR-
VAGASTROM
MOMO->ALAN: Brutish, but has a good heart. Heard he killed someone. I’m sure his reason was good…
ALAN->MOMO: We’ve never met.
MOMO->LEO: …No comment.
LEO->MOMO: A total NPC. Not worth my time.
MOMO->SHO: A sweet kid. I’d like to know him better, but he’s got that parasite stuck to his side most of the time. I’d like to try what he cooks, also, but I’m pretty limited on what I can eat.
SHO->MOMO: Huh? I’ve seen them around the halls, I think.
OBSCUARY
MOMO->EDWARD: A vampire. On campus. Yeah, right.
EDWARD->MOMO: A human pretending to be a ghoul? No… something more than that. Hm.
MOMO->RUI: Seems nice. I don’t talk to him much- our schedules don’t match.
RUI->MOMO: Ah, Momo! I know that name! I don’t talk to ‘em much, but they’re cool!
MOMO->LYCA: Hm? Who? Couldn’t tell you.
LYCA->MOMO: Huh? Mortkranken ghoul? Like the doctors? I’m not sick. I don’t need to go.
JABBERWOCK
MOMO->HARU: Neurotic. Yuri tells me not to deal with these sorts of people. It’s entertaining to see him scramble to hide the anomaly in his baby pouch every time I walk by.
HARU->MOMO: Untrustworthy! The moment I look away- BAM! All my babies will be gone!
MOMO->TOWA: Clings to the Jabberwock captain. Freaks me out a bit.
TOWA->MOMO: >:(
MOMO->REN: Sometimes, I take his place when he’s supposed to be working. It allows me to have a breath of fresh air, as well as a sort-of routine. I’m sure he doesn’t mind. A mutualistic relationship, then…
REN->MOMO: Anything that gets that clown off my back… Not the worst person.
HOTARUBI
MOMO->SUBARU: Anomaly sympathizer, from what I’ve heard. Doesn’t he know these things are dangerous? We’ve entire units to stabilize and contain these things. Who cares if it’s a little inhumane? The ends justify the means.
SUBARU->MOMO: Someone who euthanizes anomalies? How horrible… It sickens me to hear of such cruelty. What did those creatures do to deserve death? Who decided upon it? Was this person alone the judge, jury, and executioner? Nobody has the right to decide that.
MOMO->HAKU: Ah… who was that? Patient number, please.
HAKU->MOMO: Hm. Sounds like an interesting character. Couldn’t tell you more than that.
MOMO->ZENJI: Oh, you mean Jiro’s brother? I know him under a different name- Taro? That’s what I saw in his file. I hear rumors that he’s still kicking beyond the grave. I wasn’t ever one to believe in ghosts, but considering the entire identity of Darkwick, it’s in the realm of possibility.
ZENJI->MOMO: Such a deep complexity in their shineless eyes…! Such anger! Such sorrow! It fills me with inspiration- the story of building tension behind such a kind smile! I expect nothing less of the person keeping my dear little brother company!
SINOSTRA
MOMO->TAIGA: Annoying. He keeps breaking in and eating the taxidermy anomalies I make, as well as Yuri’s live specimens. I was frightened at first, but now I’m just a little sick of it.
TAIGA->MOMO: …Who the fuck’re you talkin’ about?
MOMO->ROMEO: Horribly pale. Is he sick? Comes around every now and again to get some sort of skin cream and pays more than he needs to. Sometimes, I carry documents to-and-fro for him. I think we’re friends, if not properly acquainted. Seems to like being called “Fico”.
ROMEO->MOMO: That U.A.F (undead, apathetic freak! G.I.T.Y.T.H- get it through your thick head!!!)… Not the worst person to work with, but it’s annoying to not know what someone’s thinking! They seem reliable enough, however… I can overlook these undesirable traits.
MOMO->RITSU: Keeps trying to interview me, or something. He records every conversation he has, so I’m not too keen on talking to him. I don’t particularly enjoy being perceived.
RITSU->MOMO: Quite the elusive ghoul- just like the house captain! I can’t find any solid documentation of them- I must find out from whence they came!!
MORTKRANKEN
MOMO->YURI: The first person to show up in my memories. Some say I rely on him too much. I agree. He’s literally the reason Im alive. He’s the reason my heart still pumps blood through a brain that can’t remember its own mother. I don’t think he likes me very much anymore. I keep acting like I don’t care, but I’m a little nervous that I’ll never get better. I’m a little upset. I’m not sure at what. I hope he still likes me enough to keep my medication going.
YURI->MOMO: A testament to my unending genius! People called me mad for wanting to try this treatment, but they were doomed to die without it. A high risk, but a high reward! And now, thanks to none other than the spectacular Dr. Yuri Isami, they live- stronger and faster than before! With their own stigma! Though- I do admit they seem a bit dazed whenever they have nothing to do. I’m sure it’s only a side effect of their treatment. I’ll look into it.
MOMO->JIRO: One of my closest friends. He came in for treatment around the time I was finishing the first few stages of mine. He was in a coma the first time I saw him. I’m glad he got better so quickly. Yuri really is amazing. I’m a little envious of his raw strength, but I know I shouldn’t push myself. He’s usually around to protect me anyways, so I’m not too bothered. I know he’s here for me- and I’m here for him- but I can’t help this ache in my heart whenever Yuri pushes me aside to talk to him instead. I care for Jiro deeply. It isn’t his fault that I’m feeling this way. I know that he’s noticed.
JIRO->MOMO: Patient 275, Magnum Opus- or, rather, Momo. Their condition since I’ve assisted Yuri has gotten slowly but steadily better. No state to go out on missions. Extremely fragile, even. During use, their stigma slowly kills them- and I’d assume it’s painful. After all, when they first tried to use it, their ribs tangled into each other. Afterwards, they were quite scared of using it, even when Yuri wanted more data. In this sense, they’ve always been afraid, despite them hiding it. Not much you can hide from somebody who knows how fast your heart is beating. I don’t mind if they hide behind me or cling. I’ll stand by their side. What else is there to do?
okay if you seriously made it this long thank you… make sure to like and subscribe and tell me what u think if you want to id appreciate it a lot…it was my first time writing for a bunch of (all of) these guys so please excuse if i mischaracterized them 😞

LOZ Fic Recs
Deciding to use my hobby of autistically crawling through AO3 tags for good. I'm prioritizing fics with less than 50 kudos. None of these are ship fics, most don't have any romance. All of these are completed one shots, most under 10k words.
Skies, Surfaces, and the Hero Chef That Can't Actually Cook by greatduwangs
Summary: Link's cooking sidequest in Skyward Sword, which goes about as well as you'd expect. Or, the missing ingredient was a home all along, or whatever.
Why I recommend it: 4.5k of Link eating things he shouldn't. Very funny and very cute!
Big Dark by phlyarologist
Summary: Character study of Mido as the events of Ocarina of Time change him, worldbuilding the Kokiri and examining what it means to grow up.
Why I recommend it: Contender for the best LOZ fic I've ever read. Brilliant worldbuilding and characterization, and a fantastic understanding of childhood and its nuances that you rarely see outside of fiction aimed at children.
loop - synonyms: coil, noose, ring, circle by MidnightBunnyy
Summary: Fi gets stuck in a timeloop and is very... well, Fi about it.
Why I recommend it: Excellent Fi characterization that leads to a very funny take on a time loop scenario while still being a serious story.
Notes: Restricted work, only available to AO3 users.
A Legacy Cast in Stone by sagittamoth
Summary: Pre-Skyward Sword Sheikah worldbuilding following an OC who works with the robots and timeshift stones in the last days before the war.
Why I recommend it: Does a great job with worldbuilding, creating a vibrant world that slots neatly into the greater Skyward Sword canon.
missing by fandomsandshit
Summary: Drabble exploring Zelda's time in the dungeon.
Why I recommend it: Does a brilliant job painting fear and an oppressive atmosphere, with stellar Zelda characterization.
Growth by herohelio
Summary: Two connected snippets of Malon in the adult timeline, meeting Link again.
Why I recommend it: Adorable Link and Malon friendship and great Malon characterization, with very effective hints at what living under Ingo had been like.
Because each time we live by grainjew
Summary: Follows Link through ALTTP, written through the lens of the reincarnation theory with a focus on connection to the wider LOZ series.
Why I recommend it: Author described it as a 'mood piece', which it absolutely is and is very good at. I like the surreal and blurry way reincarnation is portrayed in this fic, and it has a great take on the maidens.
Blind and the Bunny by justAPassingThought
Summary: A character study of Blind the Thief through his defeat in the Thieves’ Hideout Dungeon.
Why I recommend it: Excellent exploration of the Dark World and the way its transformations work, and I really like Blind's view on Link's Dark World form.
Litany of Betrayal by RawLiverAndCigarettes
Summary: A foreign warlord swears fielty to the king of Hyrule. Impa knows what the stranger truly wants. She has seen it before. She can still taste the ash.
Why I recommend it: Fantastic character study of Ganondorf and Impa in Ocarina of Time. Everyone is horrible and I'm thriving. Incorporates Hylia into the OOT canon in a way I find actually interesting. Fascinating worldbuilding in general.
Notes: Prequel to a novel-length fic I have not read (I'm terrible at reading long fics rip).
that gentle hubris by cassiopeian
Summary: Zelda bares her soul at the Spring of Wisdom, but the answers she seeks do not come from a goddess.
Why I recommend it: Mipha and Zelda friendship, a fun take on Zora mythology and I always love mortals forging their own paths in worlds where gods are objectively real.
Hunger by Anonymous
Summary: Sequel to Grace, where Zelda struggles to reckon with perceptions out of her control. Link is there to help point out what she's missed. Can be read as standalone.
Why I recommend it: Autistic Zelda, queerplatonic zelink, and a great portrayal of the hunger that comes with trauma.
Notes: Sequel to a fic that is also very good.
As Above, So Below by Mothlight_Witch
Summary: An exploration of the Depths and Hyrule's cosmology.
Why I recommend it: The other contender for 'best LOZ fic I've read'. Astounding atmosphere and worldbuilding, incredibly unique and all-around breathtaking. Lives in my head rent free.
What is your wish? by AdeptArcanist
Summary: Character study of Vaati connecting him to Link's Awakening and Majora's Mask.
Why I recommend it: Very weird and unique take on LOZ lore and I'm so incredibly here for that.
Linner (Link Dinner) by waterglider
Summary: An adaptation of one of Zelda's diary entries set after the "Blades of the Yiga" memory. After a very irritating person saves her life, Zelda has developed a theory-- one she plans to test.
Why I recommend it: Zelda is kinda mean and Link is a monarchist bootlicker. I adore this take on pre-Calamity Link, he's genuinely insufferable and I love that. If I ever end up writing pre-Calamity Link I'm so stealing this characterization.
Notes: Sequel to another stellar fic, prequel to an in progress novel-length fanfic that I have not read (again, terrible at reading longer fic).
#If I remember/find more I'll make another post#Not an exhaustive list of every LOZ fic I've ever liked btw#There's a few omissions from this list#Mostly a couple of f/f ship fics I decided not to add bc I just didn't want to deal with ship fic rn#Might do some more trawling and make a separate f/f ship fic rec list. Depends if the aromanticism cooperates#There's also a glaring lack of marin fic recs which is mostly bc I'm SOOOO picky about her#Mostly I love it when other ppl's interpretations of things are different from mine but im annoyingly territorial about marin#That said there are def some fics I liked in spite of this and could rec that i didn't#Would just like to read some of the fics I've been putting off on reading#20k Link's Awakening retelling by midnasass you haunt me#And long marin-centric character study by deuynndoodles I will read you eventually I promiseeeeeeee#My posts#Anyway in case it wasn't obvious I hate romance and love LOZ worldbuilding (ESPECIALLY if it's weird) and character studies#Especially when the characters suck#If u have more of those send them pls thank u#Oh wait another notable exception is the minish cap zelda character study I read that was good and deserves attention#But unfortunately its tagged unreliable narrator when it's not an unreliable narrator and that's my BIGGEST pet peeve#I'd be unable to stop myself from being pedantic about it. I'm unable to stop myself rn#So that's why it's not on the list sorry. Maybe one of these days I'll get over myself

Making OCs Out of the KNB Cast's Canon Family Members Part 1
For those who don't know, we were actually given the GoM's canon family members from the creator via a Q + A. However, we didn't get any names or designs, so for years I've wanted to come up with some of my own. Well I finally started and to kick it off, we have the Kuroko family!
Family Tree + detailed profiles below cut! If you have any ideas for names, professions, personalities, etc... for the other characters family members (linked above), please let me know in the replies, tags, ask box, etc! There's so many....
Tumblr media
Canon Facts:
The immediate family consists of Tetsuya, his mother, father, and grandmother. They 4 live together in a small home.
Tetsuya inherited his looks and invisibility from his mother and personality traits from his father.
“Tetsuya” is one of the few names in the series written in katakana, not kanji.
My Headcanons:
For the GoM, I like to imagine the colored hair is a paternal trait since the color is in the family name inherited from the father (Aka, Mido, Murasaki, Ki, Ao, etc). This would mean the colored hair is a dominant trait also (in this fantasy world lol). Kuroko is a fun exception here, as “Kuro” means “black” and we know canonically he resembles his mother in appearance. So, I imagine his mother was the one with some nod to the color “light blue” in her maiden name.
I imagine Kuroko’s mother’s side writes their given names in katakana not kanji, just as he does.
We don’t know which grandmother he lives with, paternal or maternal, so for here, I decided to go with maternal, so she’s technically not a “Kuroko”. I originally came up with his paternal grandmother first, but after some thought, I feel like his father’s side would be a lot more traditional and such, so the maternal grandmother would fit more in terms of the household living situation. Basically, Grandma Kuroko’s a lot more picky than Grandma Mizumoto. However, I still came up with the paternal grandma and kinda loved her whole vibe, so I decided to make a design for her too.
Kuroko Nobutaka (黒子 信考) -
Tetsuya’s father, whom he refers to as “Otou-san” (equivalent of saying “father”). His given name means “faith/belief” + “consider/ponder”. A thoughtful and kind man, though hard for others to read. He can be a bit of an airhead and often gets lost in his own thoughts. He works as a professor of philosophy + ancient literature at a local university. Has a lot of published papers and often goes away to conferences and such. Is inept at cooking, so resorts to take-out when he and his son are left to fend for themselves (much to his mother-in-law and wife’s displeasure). Despite his bookish appearance + line of work, he’s quite into sports (particularly baseball, though basketball and golf come as close seconds). His wife has the ability to bring him out of his shell + also seemingly read his thoughts, which is why he fell for/noticed her to begin with when they met in college.
Kuroko Terumi 黒子 テルミ (nee Mizumoto  水本) -
Tetsuya’s mother, whom he refers to as “Okaa-san” (equivalent of saying “mother”). Like her son, writes her given name in katakana, but in hiragana it’s written as 光海 and means “light” + “sea”. A cheerful, yet oddly invisible woman, she passed down her low presence to her only son. She and Nobutaka met when she moved across the country for university. She works for a publishing firm. She used to be very shy growing up which didn’t help with her invisibility, so ever since high school, she tries to make up for her low presence by being more expressive and out-going than the other members of her family, to rather moderate success. She’s well respected and rather high ranking at her job, which makes her busier than she would like to be for her son’s sake.
Mizumoto Yuuka (水本 ユウカ) -
Tetsuya’s maternal grandmother and Terumi’s mother. Writes given name in katakana but in kanji its 佑寡 meaning “assistance” + “widow”. “Mizumoto” means “water” + “true”. Shortly after her husband died and sometime before her grandson was born, she came to live with her daughter and son-in-law to help around the house and has been with them ever since. She's an extroverted, affable woman and often has social gatherings with friends. Is a very good cook and makes meals for the whole family. Very self-sufficient and while not gone as frequently as her daughter and son-in-law, she's often taking trips with her friends. When she’s away, Tetsuya lives off of boiled eggs and MajiBurger, much to her displeasure, so she tries to plan meals in advance. Surprisingly tech savvy, so records all of Tetsuya’s broadcasted matches and keeps track of Seirin’s stats for the rest of the family when they can’t make it to a match (which is frequently since their jobs keep them so busy). Loves her grandson and has referred to him as Tsu-chan since birth.
Kuroko Tetsuya (黒子 テツヤ) -
An only child. He inherited his looks and lack of presence from his mother and learned his calm nature from his father. His parents are very loving (with many family photo-filled scrapbooks lining their shelves and constant communication through text) but are workaholics and his grandmother is quite lively and social for her age, so he’s been fairly independent since early on. Though he doesn’t see them often, he gets along well with his paternal grandparents, despite them being startled by him often because of his lack of presence.
Kuroko Tsukimi (黒子 月美) (nee Kokuyōseki 黒曜石) -
Tetsuya’s paternal grandmother, Tetsuya refers to her as “Obaa-san” (equivalent of saying “grandmother”). Her given name means “moon” + “beauty”. Her maiden name Kokuyōseki means “obsidian” (black stone). (a dark gemstone to represent her dark hair and formal upbringing/personality). She’s rather no-nonsense and holds tight to traditional values. Slightly estranged from her son and his family, but they keep in contact as frequently as they can through writing. She and her grandson get along when in each other’s company as she admires his good manners (which she helped instill in his early childhood, when she and her son’s family were closer). Lives in the countryside with her husband. Insists on writing her grandson’s name in kanji.
Kuroko Yoshiki (黒子 吉城) -
Tetsuya’s paternal grandfather. His given name means “fortune” + “fortress”. A stoic, stern-faced man. He used to work for one of the oldest book printers in the country, but has since retired. The Kuroko family is known for their dark black hair that doesn’t fade, even in old age (though Tetsuya is the first to not inherit this trait, taking after his mother). Always watching some kind of documentary on a variety of random topics, which his grandson doesn’t mind joining in on when he comes to visit. Has a bad leg. Lives in the countryside with his wife. Wears the thickest lenses you've ever seen and often causes Tetsuya to worry about his own eyesight.
Mizumoto Tetsuhide (水本 テツヒデ) -
A kind man who worked as a fisherman. Passed away shortly before his grandson was born. He liked to do magic tricks, something his widowed wife in-turn taught to their grandson. Given name in kanji is 哲偉 and means “philosophy” + “distinguished”. His grandson was named in honor of him. His daughter and grandson inherited his strange lack of presence.

Shopping Day
Here’s that fic with Link taking the Kokiri shopping I mentioned! This was inspired by an interaction my best friend had with an 11 year old. Children are such fascinating creatures.
---------------------------------------
The Kokiri had a strange holiday.
Once in a while, someone would wander into the Lost Woods and never wander out. Sometimes these people had rupees. Usually, these rupees made their way to the Kokiri.
Once every hundred years, the Kokiri would take these rupees into Castle Town and buy cool things with them.
This was Shopping Day.
Link did not know about Shopping Day.
He had left Kokiri village before Shopping Day, several years before in fact.
So he was very confused to see all of his ‘big’ siblings marching through the streets of Castle Town.
Link stood off to the side, an empty basket of Lon Lon Milk he’d delivered hanging off one arm and a shopping list in the other hand. He’d run into town to do some errands, and he hadn’t expected to encounter anything odd. Nothing odd had happened since he got back from Termina. Well, unless you were to count being sucked into the War of Eras, but that technically hadn’t happened yet. Time travel, and all that.
So he was a bit taken aback by the procession of small, green clad children with fairies through Castle Town square.
He reached up to rub at his good eye, blinking to prove to himself he was seeing things properly and it wasn’t a hallucination as a result of not getting enough sleep last night. The kids were still there, and so this wasn’t a result of his nightmares not letting him sleep.
Part of him felt like, doing something. He didn’t know what, but he felt like some sort of action was required.
The other part of him was just standing there, watching, probably even more confused than the regular townsfolk.
Saria, standing at the back of the group, noticed him, did a double take, and then marched right up to him.
“Hi Link!” She grinned. “How come you don’t visit anymore?”
Link blinked at her, but smiled and crouched down to be closer to her level.
“Hello, Saria,” he said. “And what are you doing in town?”
“You’re avoiding the question,” Saria told him.
Damn, he should’ve remembered she was perceptive like that.
“Saria,” Mido ran up and grabbed her arm. “That’s not Link. Link died, remember?”
Link raised an eyebrow, taking a look down at himself. He didn’t seem dead. He thought he’d remember if he died.
“No, he just grew up,” Saria rolled her eyes. “And he hasn’t told me why he stopped visiting yet,” her hands planted on her hips, and somehow Link still felt admonished despite being twice her height and easily 25 years older than her now.
He gestured at Mido. “This is why I stopped visiting,” he said. “You stopped recognizing me,”
Saria huffed. “Just because you grew up doesn’t mean you get to avoid visiting,”
“What’s ‘grew up’?” Fado asked, leaning around Saria to squint at Link.
“Sometimes my bones creak now,” Link informed the curious Kokiri.
“What?!”
And suddenly Link was bombarded with requests to hear his creaky bones.
Link promptly went about moving all of his joints to find one that creaked.
He lucked out, his left shoulder was creaking at the moment.
“That’s cool,” one of the know-it-all brothers said, all three grinning wide.
“Does ‘grew up’ also make you taller?” Fado asked.
“Yes,” Link nodded. “I’m taller and my bones creak sometimes,”
“What happened to your eye?” Mido asked.
“Mido, that’s rude,” Saria huffed.
Link laughed, waving his hand. “Oh, I don’t mind answering that question. It got injured in a fight with a monster, and now it doesn’t work anymore,”
“You fought a monster?!” Fado gasped.
“And I won,” for some reason he felt awfully proud of himself, despite basically fighting monsters for a living.
“Whoa!” Several Kokiri seemed really dazzled by that.
“What do you mean your eye doesn’t work?” Mido narrowed his eyes at Link.
Link opened his bad eye.
A few of the Kokiri shrieked, and Saria smacked his arm and scolded him for scaring them. Link laughed, shutting his eye again.
“You asked,” he scoffed, and didn’t even feel embarrassed about being a grown adult and acting like a kid.
“A monster did that?” One of the brothers reached up to touch his face, and Link forced himself not to remove the hand.
“Yes, a monster did that,” Link nodded. “The monster ended up worse though,”
“Well, that’s good,” Fado nodded.
“So you’re going to start visiting again, right?” Saria frowned at him.
Link nodded. “If you’d like me to,”
“Yes!” Saria nodded, and everyone agreed.
“I’d be happy to start visiting again then,” Link agreed, to the glee of his siblings. “Now, what are you doing in town?”
“It’s Shopping Day,” Saria informed him.
“Shopping Day,” Link echoed. “What is Shopping Day?”
Saria held up a bag of rupees. “We collect rupees, and then every hundred years we come here to buy cool things,” she explained. “Link! You should join us!”
“Yeah!” One of the know-it-all brothers agreed. “With your ‘grew up’ powers you can reach the stuff on the high shelves!”
Link raised a brow, not sure what ‘grew up powers’ were, but figured they were referring to him being taller now.
The Kokiri all looked at him brightly. He looked at the shopping list his wife had given him. He did need to do some shopping.
“Alright,” he said. “I’d love to join you,”
The Kokiri cheered, and Link tucked his shopping list into the basket and accepted Saria’s hand to let her drag him after them into the first store they saw, which fortunately contained some of the things he had to buy from his list.
It must have been a sight for the rest of the town, seeing the head of the Queen’s personal guard be dragged behind a collection of small children in green.
They wandered into the store, and Link made a point of being sneaky about grabbing the items on Malon’s list to hide in the basket. He didn’t have a lot of rupees on him, and while he’d normally be happy to add them all to the collection his siblings had amassed, he did still need to get groceries and pick up that repaired pitchfork.
He’d add whatever was left over, he resolved.
“Hey, Link!”
Link pulled the little cloth over top of his own purchases, very grateful Malon insisted on lining the baskets with loose fabric, and wandered over to where he was being called.
“Yes?” He asked, coming to stand next to Mido.
“Grab that for me?” Mido pointed up at an item on the shelf.
Link followed his arm, pointing at a small slingshot on a shelf at his eye level. “This?”
“Yes,” Mido nodded.
Link pulled it off the shelf and handed it to him.
“Thanks!” And Mido ran off.
“Link!”
Link headed to the other side of the store, waving at the very confused and concerned shopkeep, who relaxed upon seeing him. Normally Link was a pretty trustworthy and responsible person.
He mentally apologized, knowing full well that wasn’t always true around his siblings.
“Yes?” He asked, stopping next to Fado.
“What’s that?” She asked, pointing at something on a taller shelf.
Link lifted himself to his toes, and pointed at what he thought she was talking about. “This?”
“Yeah!”
“This is a bag of deku nuts,”
“Can I have it?”
“Sure,” he passed the bag to her.
“Thanks Link!”
“Of course,”
Fado ran off and Link went back to his own shopping.
He snuck to the counter when he had everything while the others were distracted with something else.
“What’s with the kids?’” The shopkeep asked as he looked over the items and Link passed him rupees as subtly as he could.
“It’s Shopping Day,” Link explained. “They have their own money, so you don’t need to worry about payment,”
The shopkeep eyed him. “I didn’t know you had kids,”
“I don’t,” Link agreed. “Not yet, anyway. These are my siblings,”
“Your, siblings,” the shopkeep said slowly.
“Yes,” Link confirmed.
“Who are two decades younger than you,”
“No, they’re actually older than me. They just don’t age,”
“What?”
“It’s a long story,”
The shopkeep nodded, gave Link his change, and decided it was better not to question.
A lot of people in Castle Town had that attitude towards Link. He was a strange man, with strange stories, and strange ideas. He was still naive and curious at 20, and yet he was the single best fighter and warrior in the entire kingdom, perhaps second only to that mystery sheikah assassin that lingered around the castle. But he was also a good, honest man who cared deeply and tried to help everyone he came across, and so no one had any real issue with him.
Link knew all of this, and it didn’t bother him much. In fact, it probably crafted his sense of humour somewhat.
And it made conversations like this very easy to navigate.
A few minutes later, the Kokiri marched up the counter and paid for everything they had. Link waved goodbye to the shopkeep as he let Saria grab his hand and drag him out.
It went about the same way for the next three shops, two of which Link had nothing to buy in, and then they passed by the blacksmith.
“Link,” Mido said, tapping his foot at the blacksmith shop.
“Yes?” Link asked, stopping next to Mido.
“I want a sword,” Mido told him. “But they only sell those to adults. You’re tall enough to pretend to be an adult,”
Link didn’t need to pretend to be an adult, he was an adult, but he decided not to actually say that.
“I am,” he said instead. “Do you want me to buy you a sword?”
He had no issue talking to the blacksmith. He needed to pick up that pitchfork anyway.
“Can I have a sword too?” One of the know-it-all brothers asked, followed quickly by the rest of the trio.
“Are you buying us swords?” Fado asked, joining the group.
“I don’t think the adults would let you if they knew you were going to be giving them to us,” Saria pointed out, much to everyone’s dismay.
“Maybe we can make a compromise,” Link thought, tapping a few fingers on the hilt of the gilded sword at his hip. He never left his house without it and a shield anymore, another oddity the people of Castle Town noted about him, since he felt safer if he had something on him to protect himself with. “I’ll go over and buy everyone who wants one a sword, but you have to let me show you the best way to swing it. That way the adults will think I’m teaching you, and you can learn how to be really good with a sword very quickly,”
“Are you even good with a sword?” Mido asked.
Link nodded. “The Queen seems to think so. And I can beat monsters in fights,”
“Will you teach us to beat monsters?!” Fado grinned.
“Sure,” Link agreed.
He was handed the bag of rupees with an order for five swords, since Saria didn’t want one.
“Hello, Marv,” Link greeted.
Marv, whose name wasn’t really Marv, but a much younger Link had trouble pronouncing his real name, and so had been dubbed Marv and never asked Link to change when he got better at spoken Hylian, looked up from his current work, spotted Link, and grinned wide. He waved briefly before getting back to work.
“Hey Link! Gimme just a minute, alright?”
“Of course,” Link nodded and leaned against one of the support beams.
Marv was one of the few people in town who actually believed Link when he spoke about his adventures, the only others being Malon and Zelda, since even Malon’s father only ever humoured him. According to Marv, any eleven year old who knew so much about sword care and had as many scars as he did had to be telling the truth, or at least some version of it. Since the stories never changed as Link got older, Marv became more convinced Link was being honest. As a result, whenever Link needed a touchup on his weapons, or his shields needed a repair, he came to Marv. When tools around the ranch broke, he brought them to Marv to fix. He trusted Marv, and he liked Marv, and after so many years he even considered Marv a friend.
Marv finished up his current work and vanished into the back room to retrieve the fixed pitchfork and then came out of his outdoor forge to stand in the sun.
Link knew the Kokiri were trying to hide behind each other, since he’d tried hiding from Marv the first time they met as well. Marv was a big guy, almost completely muscle, with a big beard and hair he kept braided back. Sometimes he braided his beard too, after letting Link do so a few years back when Marv taught him to braid and discovering that it meant less cinders ended up in it. At the time Link had met him he’d had dark brown hair, but it had gone grey now, though there were still a few streaks of black-brown in his beard. And he was usually holding something very sharp. It wasn’t a calming appearance for small children who’d never met an adult before.
“Here to pick this up, I assume?” Marv offered Link the pitchfork, which Link accepted.
“Yes, but not just that,”
“Oh?”
“I don’t suppose you have five swords I could buy? About the same size as my gilded sword?” Link asked, digging out the rupees to pay Marv for the repairs.
Marv accepted the payment, looking Link up and down a few times. “Whatta ya need five swords for? You break yours or something?”
Link laughed, shaking his head. “If I’d broken my sword, I’d be asking you to fix it,”
“True enough,” Marv paused to laugh, and Link couldn’t help but join in. “So, what do ya need five swords for?”
“My siblings want me to teach them,” Link explained.
Marv reached up to stroke his beard. “Your siblings, eh? You mean the ones from the forest?”
“Yes,” Link nodded. “They want to learn how to use swords themselves. In case monsters show up,”
“Self defense,” Marv nodded. “Alright, I’ll see what I’ve got,”
“Thank you,” Link smiled, and Marv disappeared back into his shop.
A few minutes later he came back out, cradling about a dozen child-sized swords.
Link raised an eyebrow.
“My granddaughter made these,” Marv explained. “Her brother wants to be a knight, and she’s got a knack for the forge, so she wanted to make him one that was perfect so he could start training. I have a lot of leftovers from her quest to make the perfect sword, and I have no idea what to do with them. You can pick whatever ones you want, and I’ll even only charge you half price if you’re willing to take them off my hands,”
Link smiled. “We’d be happy to take them off your hands,”
Link managed to wave the Kokiri over, letting everyone pick whatever sword they wanted from the bundle Marv had brought out. They ran back to the safety of Saria after they had one though, since Marv still scared them.
Marv laughed, taking the swords back to the shop before returning to accept the rupees in the bag the Kokiri brought from Link, though Link did have to pitch in a bit himself.
“Thank you, Marv,” Link smiled, shifting his basket back to his elbow so he could hold the pitchfork in the same hand, offering his now free one to shake.
“Anytime, Link,” Marv laughed, shaking it with just a bit more force than necessary, though not on purpose. “You know you’re always welcome round here,”
Link nodded. “Of course. Remind me next time I’m in town to stop for a chat,”
“I’ll make tea,” Marv promised. “And next time better be soon, you know how cranky Norro gets when you don’t stick around long enough to greet him too,”
Link laughed. “I’ll do my best to be back within the week then. Wish your husband well for me, will you?”
“You know I will!” Marv waved as Link left, retreating back into the forge only after Link was back with the Kokiri.
“Why do you have that?” Fado asked, pointing at the pitchfork.
“I needed to pick it up,” Link explained. “It was broken, and he fixed it for me,”
The Kokiri nodded like this made sense.
“Hey, why don’t we visit your house?” Saria suggested suddenly, and the others perked up.
“Yeah! We’re out here already!” Fado agreed. “And we never visit you!”
Agreement broke out among the Kokiri, and Link didn’t even get to speak before it was decided that they’d be visiting Link’s house.
He wondered, briefly as he led a small procession of children through Castle Town, how Malon would react to him bringing home his entire family.
The Kokiri were immediately enamored with the ranch, especially all the animals, and Link spent some time giving them a tour and answering questions.
Then Mido decided he wanted his lesson on fighting monsters. Everyone else quickly decided they also wanted monster fighting lessons.
Link sighed, reaching down to hand his basket to Saria.
“Saria, will you head inside and find the woman with red hair and give this to her?” Link asked. “Her name is Malon, tell her I sent you,”
Saria nodded and vanished into the house, leaving Link with a very eager set of kids with swords waiting for him to start teaching them.
Link drew his gilded sword, and began going over the basics.
A few hours later, Link trekked into the house followed by the Kokiri, all sweaty and tired, and mostly very pleased.
Malon was humming as she moved around the kitchen, cooking, while Saria sat at the table with a cup of tea.
“I found Malon,” Saria told him happily, and Malon turned to look at the group.
“I see that,” Link smiled. “Thank you, Saria,”
“Link,” Malon moved across the room, wrapping her arms around him as soon as she reached him. “Thank you for running those errands for me,”
“Of course,” Link grinned. “Anything for you,”
“Who is this?” Mido asked.
“This is Malon,” Link introduced. “She’s my wife,”
“What’s a wife?” Fado asked.
“She’s like my girlfriend, but we have matching jewelry now,” Link explained, trying to make sure they understood the basics and not bothering with a lot of the details of marriage. “And we can’t break up unless someone else gets involved and it’s a lot of work. And we live in the same house,”
The Kokiri nodded to show they understood, while Malon gave him an amused smile.
“Does she also have ‘grew up’ powers?” One of the know-it-all brothers asked.
“Yes,” Link said before Malon could ask. “Yes she does,”
Malon made everyone supper, and Link eventually agreed to escort the Kokiri home since it was getting dark out. They elicited another promise to start visiting again, and then Link went home to his wife.
And, foolishly, Link believed that was that.
The next day, a knock arrived at the door.
Sheik was standing on the other side, tapping his foot impatiently when Link opened it.
“Hello Sheik,” Link grinned.
“Link what did you do?”
Link frowned. “You could at least say hello back,”
Sheik sighed in a way that said he wanted to growl and tilted his head back to look at the sky. “Hello, Link.”
“Good morning,” Link replied, grinning again. “And what brings you here this morning?”
“Link what did you do?” Sheik asked again.
“I have no idea what you mean,” Link said, thinking back to the last week. He didn’t think he’d done anything recently to piss off his basically-brother.
Sheik produced a bulletin with the words “Guards Warn About Young Children With Swords” at the top.
“I know this was you,” Sheik growled.
“Prove it,” Link said.
They stared each other down for a long moment.
Sheik sighed, tugging down his mask a bit. Must have been hard to slip out then.
“Link, please,”
“They won’t be back,” Link promised. “The Kokiri were in town, and asked me to teach them to fight monsters. So I did,”
Sheik frowned. “Why were the Kokiri in town?”
“It was Shopping Day,”
“Shopping Day,”
“Yes,”
Sheik blinked at Link, long and slow.
“Do I want to know?”
Link shrugged. “They were shopping,”
Sheik sighed heavily, and Link felt a little bad. Only a little.
“Would you like some tea?” He offered.
“Yes,” Sheik nodded. “I think I do,”
Sheik came in, and Link got to tell him all about how he had to explain taxes to eternal ten year olds.

Drink It to the Bitter End
Drink It to the Bitter End by BattleAngel
Shouta Aizawa thinks there's something off about Midoriya Izuku. He's been thinking that since he saw the boy in his classroom, hunched over a seat, making himself as small as possible, elbows tucked in close, calloused knuckles and darting eyes. Crooked nose, the kind of odd, subtle little twist that gives the boy's large green eyes a quirky flare. The kind of nose that was broken one too many times and hadn't been set properly often enough. That was not the behavior of someone with a ridiculously overpowered Quirk. That was especially not the behaviour he'd seen during the exam footage, the footage of a green-haired teenager who was flashy and open and seemed to radiate power. Illogical. -- Or: Midoriya gets into vigilantism a little too early, with a Quirk more like his uncle's than his father's, and, frankly, half the time he's just along for the ride.

some of the best fantasy au fics for bnha that i've read
i decided to make a fic rec list of one of my favourite aus/fusions. mostly midoriya-centric, there are some crossovers (with hp), and a lot of different ways in which the authors have taken them - so it could be Quirks, ghosts, outright fantasy aus, spirits, witches etc etc. there isn't a specific order and there aren't a tonne (these are the ones i could find buried in my bookmarks lol), but the ones on the list are all really well written i love them.
i've tried adding relevant information, the summary (shortened if it's pretty long) and just. adding some random tags that may be important. not all of them though. obviously this is not a complete list and there will most definitely be more fics out there, if there are some really good fics that you know that aren't on this list, feel free to tell me, i'd love to read them!!!
i hope someone enjoys these!
Faith Becomes You by SugaSuga
oneshot | gen dfo, quirkless midoriya summary 'There's a tiny shrine in Musutafu that's overgrown with kudzu vines between Izuku's apartment and his middle-school. There may very well still be a god inside it. There may be nothing but the myth of a man from when Quirks were first emerging. Izuku hides in its walls for a while and ends up tending to the forgotten shrine. All good deeds have their impact, don't they?'
Of Mythos and Men by Oceanbreeze7
oneshot | gen spirit animal au, kinda summary (shortened) 'When he was young, Midoriya always wondered what his mythos would be. The matching half to his quirk, the ancestry of its power. Mythos were strange things, not linked genetically like quirks seemed to be. [...] Midoriya hadn't met his mythos. Even in UA. (In his dreams, something called to him, 'Chase me!')'
what a lion cannot manage by LadyLiterature
multichapter | ongoing | f/m, m/m kitsune au, female izuku, future bakudeku summary (shortened) 'She wants to be a hero. Wants to save everyone she meets and even the people she hasn’t. [...] A smart fox avoids fights. A smart fox does not seek them out. A smart fox does not fight for everyone. A smart fox, when they absolutely must, only fights for themselves and what is theirs and nothing else. Izumi, for all that she tries to be, is not a good fox.'
My Magic Academia by Kiterou
series | oneshots and multichapter | ongoing | gen HP crossover, wizard midoriya, platonic bkdk, some ocs summary (shortened) ' [...] In which Midoriya Inko is a witch and Izuku a wizard and even after 150 years of quirks taking over the world, Izuku still couldn't tell Kacchan that he isn't worthless and that he still could become a hero all on his own.'
A Lonely Windchime Makes No Sound by Musecookie
multichapter | ongoing | multi reader/shinso, total fantasy au, very wholesome summary (shortened) ' [...] You enjoy visiting your slightly creepy local library. When you accidentally befriend the elusive owner's familiar, he begins to appear more and more when you visit. You don't really mind, and he doesn't seem to hate you, even when the two of you become tied up in each other's fate as you pursue the secret to reviving a magical species of flower. Soft Strangers to Friends to Lovers type beat with lots of fluff and naps! Sleepy cuddles included.'
The grapes of friendship by Gentrychild
oneshot | gen crack, dfo, vampire izuku summary 'Izuku, a dhampir hiding his real identity as he goes to UA, the best wizard school in the country, spends the day with his friends. None of them are aware of it.'
Yesterday Upon the Stair by PitViperofDoom
multichapter | complete | gen less supernatural, izu's quirk lets him see ghosts, he still has ofa summary (shortened) 'Midoriya Izuku has always been written off as weird. As if it's not bad enough to be the quirkless weakling, he has to be the weird quirkless weakling on top of it. But truthfully, the "weird" part is the only part that's accurate. He's determined not to be a weakling, and in spite of what it says on paper, he's not actually quirkless [...] Not that anyone would believe it if he told them.'
sum of all (and by them driven) by Elemental
series | multichapter | ongoing | gen dadzawa, spirits give quirks, izu sees these spirits series summary 'Quirks aren't what you think they are.' first part summary (shortened) 'Midoriya Izuku is medically quirkless, not technically homeless, perpetually exhausted and doing his damned best despite it all. He also sees spirits, which might be cool if not for the fact that a) no one else does, b) they really don't like him very much, and c) he's pretty sure the heroes now think he's a villain working for the League [...]'
The Struggles of a Modern-Day Vampire by miraculousemily47
oneshot | gen crack, 1-a shenanigans, vampire midoriya summary 'After Midoriya Izuku is turned into a vampire towards the end of his first year at U.A., he decides he wants to tell his classmates about his condition. The only problem is that he can't physically say the words, and his classmates are fucking idiots.'
Lights in the Dark by FrostKitten
series | oneshots | ongoing | gen supernatural au, izuku can see demons etc, quirkless/magic au summary (of first part) 'Midoriya Izuku, like most young kids, knows there are monsters. Simply Superstitious by CryCaladrius
multichapter | ongoing | gen lots of folklore and yokai and stuff, 'quirkless' magic user izuku, decent dad hisashi too summary (shortened) 'Izuku Midoriya’s father is a Hou-ou — a Japanese phoenix. For some reason, this means yokai have a standing invitation to pester Izuku with their existence. Birds assemble choirs for his birthday. If there’s no cedar leaf under the welcome mat, the amazake babaa that lives two apartments over will be knocking on their door by evening. His yokai-purifying excursions get mistaken for vigilantism far too often. [...]'
Cuckoo Bird (anonymous author)
multichapter | ongoing/maybe discontinued | gen it may be discontinued but theres lots of fae folklore, deku is a changeling, deals etc, plus some platonic shindeku building up?? summary 'There's something off about Midoriya Izuku. (change·ling /ˈCHānjliNG/ noun a child believed to have been secretly substituted by fairies for the parents' real child in infancy.)'
tread softly as you go by IceEckos12
oneshot | gen if you read any fae au please let it be this! has faeries but mido is not one summary 'Humans used to be good at the old ways. They used to know how to bait the trap, to spin a web of words and lies that would ensnare even the most wily. Humans used to be able to twist deceptions around knots of iron and turn them into weapons of power. They forgot a long, long time ago. A boy unwittingly makes a deal with one of the fae, severing his ties to humanity. However, he finds that the fae world is far more strange and complex than he ever could have imagined.'
Hell is just a shoujo manga by supercrunch
multichapter | complete | f/m fantasy au, bakudeku, fem!izuku, isekai, dekusquad stuff, also some iidachako summary (shortened) 'Izuku wakes up crushed under a statue, trapped in the body of a princess who doesn't exist. Turns out she's a demon, which is weird. What's even weirder is the déjà vu that surrounds Kamino palace, reminding her of the events of this one manga she used to love. [...] But that's probably just a coincidence. [...] The problem here, obviously, is that Izuku's the demon princess. Ergo, she's a villain. And that means she's going to die at the end of this manga. Again.'
hold your breath as you cross by cassiopeia721
oneshot | gen dadzawa, another 'quirks are from spirits au' (expect more of those actually), mido is sad :( summary 'As the bridge between the world of guardian spirits and the quirk users who are blessed by them, Izuku's duty is to clean up the mess his predecessor left. It's taken what feels like an eternity worth of work, but Izuku's finally finished, and he's ready to rest at last. Unfortunately, the pro heroes who just watched him take down the Scourge of Kamino have no intention of letting him just wander off, and he finds himself stuck in an interrogation room with a bunch of humans who he's sure will never believe a word he says.'
To See with Eyes Unclouded by CrazySatan
series | oneshots | ongoing | gen witch au, witch midoriya, quirkless mido, bkg is not a good friend series summary 'Midoriya Izuku is a witch. A powerful witch. And even though he doesn't have a quirk, and magic doesn't Work Like That, Izuku ends up a hero. Somehow.'
Demons and Darkness by wolfsrainrules
series | oneshots | ongoing | gen dadzawa, shinso and mido and bkg are becoming friends, they can see monsters/spirits/bad things summary of first part 'Izuku has believed in the things that go bump in the night since he was small. That means he can see them, and almost everyone he knows....can't. So he decides he's going to be the shield humanity needs, no matter what. Eventually, he finds others that See too.'
know what i've made by the marks on my hands by simkjrs
multichapter | ongoing/maybe discontinued | gen dadzawa, quirk spirit au (this inspired most of the others on this list), also eri summary (shortened) 'Midoriya Izuku just wants to lead a quiet, peaceful life. This is foiled by the fact that a) he can see spirits, b) his good nature demands that he help anyone he sees in trouble, and c) he, by all rights, should not exist. [...]'

fic writer interview!
How many works do you have on AO3?
37, though another one is going up tomorrow because haunted AO3 hours started and I don't want to post it in the middle of the night on a Monday. Also like 4 or 5 more in reserve from zines/bangs. I'm kinda impressed with myself, but also, side-eyeing y'all with fic counts in the 100s. Phenomenal. Effervescent.
What's your total AO3 word count?
257,246
How many fandoms have you written for and what are they?
In chronological order of first fic on AO3: Percy Jackson, Soul Eater, Steven Universe, My Hero Academia, Dragalia Lost, Avater: the Last Airbender, the Witcher, and Genshin Impact! That's 7 fandoms and I'm not counting Homestuck (I only wrote OC stuff) or D&D (same thing).
I also have works from Axis Powers: Hetalia and Katekyo Hitman Reborn! on Fanfiction dot hell that none of you will ever see. I definitely posted and deleted a Twilight OC fic once.
What are your top 5 fics by kudos?
Dish Duty | ATLA
The Sword of Damocles is Swinging | MHA
The Ancient Art of Jerkbending | ATLA
Dishabille | MHA
Summer Break | MHA
ATLA is a powerful fandom so I'm not surprised both my ATLA fics made top five. Dishabille's popularity continues to pleasantly surprise me. Damocles is only surprising because it isn't first. I am so proud of Summer Break and that entire Shinsou series, I'm glad it made top 5 and is gonna break 1k kudos soon. <3
(Now get Dog-Tired up there, I fucking love that story. q^q)
Do you respond to comments, why or why not?
To quote Mido: I do, but not consistently. Q^Q I read them all and I really want to reply to them all, but I very frequently simply to not have the energy. I have it posted on my AO3 profile, though, so hopefully it doesn't hurt anyone's feelings... I have recently been trying to at least answer all new incoming comments and not let the backlog increase! (That said, the backlog is over 100.)
What’s the fic you’ve written with the angstiest ending?
I don't tend to do angsty endings (I am a hard lover of angst with a happy ending), but I've written some questionable and bittersweet ones. I think arguably the best contendor for angstiest ending is probably Kindred Spirit. I wrote it to low key revenge myself on @thegc4life for insisting that Shinsou gets a hug (he does! technically!) and it certainly ended ominously.
Do you write crossovers? If so what is the craziest one you’ve written?
As much as I love "Edward Elric gets transported into X universe and proceeds to kick everyone's ass" crossovers, I don't relaly write any. I do enjoy full transplant AUs, though, and the one I recently posted on AO3 is an MHA-at-Hogwards AU called the Birds and the Mares that I wrote for the HP/BNHA Zine!
Have you ever received hate on a fic?
Deeeeepends on what you mean by 'hate.' :X has gotten two comments (one much politer than the other, haha) complaining about my use of the r-slur in Shinsou's internal narrative in one of the chapters, but one person backpedaled and said they understood the purpose of it while the other (more vehement) one never replied to my explanation. That's all, though!
Do you write smut? If so what kind?
Yeah. It's never going on my main AO3 (and the one time it did, I orphaned the fic). I have a side account I might post it on once I get over the fact that people who know me also know about the account. It's all 100% PWP of stuff I personally am into, and I have a very specific set of things I'm into, so... idk, feels a little personal! ^^"
Have you ever had a fic stolen?
No, but I've had people adopt general concepts I used (fabulous!) and steal my RP OCs back in ye olde fantroll days (not at all fabulous! incredibly hurtful, actually). I am vehemently opposed to plagiarism, even of concepts. It feels so gross.
Have you ever had a fic translated?
Someone in the comments mentioned that they are translating Bloodied Hound into Russian and I am SO EXCITED. I desperately want to read it. Of all the languages, it happened to be the only other one I'm decently literate in! I also want to show my grandparents. I really hope the person follows through. <3
Have you ever co-written a fic before?
I've roleplayed a lot, but I can't see myself ever co-writing a fic. I'm not even sure how it works, to be honest!
What’s your all time favourite ship?
Urgh. Pass. I can't pick one. Perils of a multishipper.
What’s a WIP that you want to finish but don’t think you ever will?
I was going to proudly say "I never post things I don't plan on finishing!" but in reality that is a lie, because Falling Down A Rabbit Hole exists from back in 2015 and is in fact the reason I made that rule for myself. ^^" Honestly, what's there still holds up, but the reality is that I didn't actually come up with a plot, so there's nowhere for it to go.
What are your writing strengths?
Interesting/relatable/funny dialogue, and also writing feelings in a 'show, don't tell!' kind of way that leaves strong impressions with people!
What are your writing weaknesses?
Plotting out long stories with good pacing! People thought Damocles had a plot, apparently? Joke's on you, it was a series of "I wanna see this happen" scenarios that I made Hawks suffer through and subsequently strung together like a haphazard multicolor plastic bead necklace that I told everyone was actually pearls.
That's why all my stories after Damocles are either short or split into a series. Shinsou's Bad Days is my attempt at proper pacing, hence it being so episodic.
What are your thoughts on writing dialogue in other languages in a fic?
I'll do it if I know the language well enough (so, Russian and ASL, I don't trust my casual Japanese), but I'm generally a stickler for making things come off naturally, so I otherwise will instead try to find the closest tonal equivalent in English (such as having Childe call Zhongli "professor" instead of "xiansheng"). Sometimes there just isn't one (like Kazuha calling Beidou 'big sis' but in a way that doesn't sound kiddish and overly casual for him), though, which sucks. :( Language is cool!
What was the first fandom you wrote for?
T. Twilight. QUQ I wish that fic still existed, it was like a single chapter of two multicolored hair OCs befriending Alice Cullen and being cool. I deleted it but I SHOULDN'T HAVE. IT WAS HISTORY.
What’s your favourite fic you’ve written?
This totally changes with each new slew of fics I post. I think currently it is Dog-Tired because despite being unsatisfied with the title, I think the story itself turned out amazing. I also am extremely happy with the entire Shinsou's Bad Days series (including upcoming installments).

mido, i would like to uhh ask for our thots on something - lemme preface this ask first by saying that this is more of a "me" problem, than it is the other party, but, here goes: if there's one thing that i've learned since consuming danmei, it's that you have two very different approaches to it re: fandom. on the one hand, you have the camp of ppl who like to go all out and wild w/ canon, do whatever, enjoy however, and on the other, ppl who try to stick closely to canon, or - 1/?
- those who don't even engage in fandom at all, and are just there to discuss the text as it is. there's nothing wrong with both approaches - we're all just here to have a good time. that being said, it kind of is giving me ??? doubt as to whether or not i'm enjoying fandom the right way. ofc there's no wrong or right way to enjoy a piece of media, and i like to think that this sin't an anne rice situation at all, but - i see ppl say fanon is shit all the time, ppl don't like certain ships.. 2/?
b/c the characters in the ships are so far removed from who they are in the text that they're pretty much just "ocs wearing the character's faces" that i have to just pause, and rlly ponder - am i doing fandom the *right* way? and it's cause for concern because i've done fandom like this ever since. i mean, my first foray into fandom was legit reading pwp/dead dove wild-ass content that was so far removed from canon, and it's been the same for every fandom i've ever been a part of 3/?
a bit of bg on me: before i came to danmei, i was knee-deep in comics. and if there's one thing you need to know abt comics - hell, even star wars - it's that anything goes re: canon because canon changes SO MUCH every few years - canon is always at the whims of the next writer who comes on board, and so it's more or less just a free-for-all pick-what-you-want buffet re: canon. doesn't mean you didn't have the occasional disk horse or meta re: canon & fanon, but. 4/?
i suppose it's just been quite.. the change of pace? anyway, fun fact: i came away from my last fandoms worrying abt and trying to be more dead dove, and now i'm worrying abt whether or not my interpretations will be canon-compliant enough. (damn @self, pick a struggle dude) anyways, one thing i've noticed is that, with mxtx, sv mains are well, i mean the book is legit sy reinventing pidw canon, and anything just goes in sv - so it's perfect. and i guess my worry is that there are - 6/?
- some mdzs-main authors whom i rlly rlly respect but am also so intimidated by because they have such amazing meta on canon events that i'm a little worried abt them seeing my works in the sv ao3 tag - even tho i know some of them don't rlly read fic - and well, getting vagued abt how my fic and interpretation of the story might be, or is, subpar. like i said, it's a me problem, because fandom is all abt writing for yourself, and the easy fix is to simply post on an altogether diff platform 7/?
but, yeah. i guess i'm just - i'm feeling kinda lost, and i get that this is borne out of my own irrational anxiety, but - what're are your thoughts on it? what do you think - is there like, not exactly *right*, but a more *aligned* way of interpreting canon that stays true to the spirit of the story, or should fandom be also all abt going crazy with your ideas? imo, u could adapt a "business in the front, party in the back" strategy on ao3 8/?
- use two complete separate profiles - one account for canon-compliant stuff and another for the id-stuff. but, yeah. i realize that the numbering of my asks may be wonky as hell, because i didn't write this ask in one go and section it off, so i'm rlly sorry if the numbering is confusing af when you view it in your inbox. anyways, that's abt it, and thank you sm for entertaining me, i rlly appreciate i. no rush, this is a super long and ?? ask, and i hope you have a nice day!
--
aah i hope you're having a good day too darling! it sounds like you're feeling anxious about the engagement aspect of fandom, that maybe there's a monolithic interpretation of canon and a "mainstream" way fans are supposed to enact fics/art/vids/etc. To deviate from that would garner negative notoriety, specifically from people whose interpretations are widely regarded as "good and true" and whose interpretations you also do personally like.
To directly answer your question, I do think that fandom should be all about going crazy with your ideas. I don't believe in any policing at all.
Let me try to impose a concrete example onto this real quick (do tell me if I'm misunderstanding). Back when I was on bird app, i followed two kinds of accounts: the Analysts and the Horny Folks. They're not mutually exclusive ofc lmfao but for the sake of ease: we have a set of tweets that are like, "SV identifies XYZ specific failings in stallion novel tropes, prescribes them to toxic masculinity, and reworks them in ABC ways" and another set of tweets that are like, "so Bingge kidnaps SQQ and LQG from canon timeline and fists them both one on each hand." Both kinds of tweets take hard (hard 💕) work to produce and both kinds feed me, god bless. But if you were to write fic based on these, only the first kind of tweets invites the question of whether or not you're going to incorporate that into your writing, which may or may not manifest as pressure bc it's 1) from a person you appreciate and 2) if you don't, you think maybe other fans who've seen those tweets will think you're doing something wrong or ignorant. Furthermore, if I want to write fic based on the second kind of tweets, do I then have to incorporate the gospel as spoken by the first kind of tweets??
Hell no!! You sure can but you don't have to. I feel like you know this is the answer already so let me just affirm that.
Look, I will say that I think there are fan interpretations out there that are more canon-aligned—but then I gotta ask myself the question, which fics are trying to be? When I read a Modern AU winter fluff 2k songxiao fic, I don't need it to have incisive commentary on the canon theme of blame and complicity, y'know? The fans who wrote that fic also aren't trying to give me that. Same thing with porn. I think the question at the heart of all reading endeavors is "what is the author trying to do?" The onus isn't all on the writer to be good, imo. Good readers will ask that question and meet the author where they're at, esp in fandom. It makes no sense to expect the same thing of a 4k coffee shop AU meet-cute and a 40k post-canon fix-it. It sounds like you're a generous reader and fan who is experienced with accepting, appreciating, and working with multiple interpretations of fandom (oh man, coming from comic fandoms?? you've got a soul of steel babe). So you know well that not everybody needs one definite and consistent reading of canon to happily engage in fandom. Many others are the same as you~! Even the BNFs, most likely. And if you follow people who post things that sour your self-confidence, here's the friendly reminder to unfollow them.
Another possible way to avoid concerns about being called out for misinterpretation is to write for smaller ships and audiences lmfao. Too many existing metas about the main character? Write about a minor character instead, wahoo! Too much ship content with a cemented dynamic? Write a completely new ship nobody's even heard of, ayooo. It's both good writing exercise and good for the soul 'cause people who find you want to be there and everyone else won't even see what you've done. I just think it's sexy lololol on both the reading and writing sides.
Okay also—there are interesting politics about "who has the more correct interpretation" when it comes to danmei bc not everyone has access to Chinese. I don't know if this plays a factor in your worries in any way? It's a whole other conversation lmfao so I'll keep it short but I definitely have had complex feelings about my own readings vs. non-Chinese speakers' readings vs. other "authorities" on interpreting the Chinese etc. etc.
At the end of the day, fandom is a sandbox and you should play how you want. Write your id fics, publish them on main, publish them on anon, don't publish them at all—whatever makes you happy! It sounds like visibility plays a large part in what you're anxious about? So yeah, maybe a side account or going anon is the way to go. I know people who do exactly what you said, one main for the character work and one side for the id food!! That's fucking valid fam. I have works on anon for the same reason.
As for people visibly chatting about the validity of certain characterizations or interpretations...that just can't be helped, y'know? It's the nature of the internet, and it's another way of fandom engagement. As long as it's not mean-spirited, I think you just have to make peace with it. Carry that dead dove spirit with you, maybe!! I fucking love dead dove fics. "I have done this and it is here and I'm not apologetic about it." That's just completely tits out and phenomenal. Alternatively, maybe try to manifest digital data in analog—this is what I do whenever I get anxious about my presence in fandom. The digital world distort the impact and importance of most things, y'know? Whenever I think someone is out of my league, it helps me to imagine a chat as a face-to-face discussion, and that reminds me this is a cool person yeah but they still have like, a real face and a real body with all of its real, normal things like itching and the possibility of tripping on stuff. A BNF might say something that makes me feel super insecure but i dunno, they still have to periodically scrub down the sink. They're still cool but they're also normal. Your methods of engagement are 100% valid with or without consideration to people you admire.
anyways those are my thoughts. It might also be worth mentioning too that people who apply strict standards of canon-compliance to their own readings and writings might not apply those same standards to others. I certainly don't. I mean, it's arguable how canon-compliant my interpretations are lmfao but I certainly try for it. But it's not so important for when I'm reading, y'feel? The central concern of reading, at least for me, is more "has this author sold me on their story" and less about whether or not it complies with "my" readings. if I'm only interested in my readings, I wouldn't be reading other people's works. And if I am in fact not interested in other people's interpretations, then maybe you shouldn't be so interested in my interpretations either hahahha.
