These drawings are from an AU set in sort of a mix of Musical, and book events with some of my and my girlfriend’s own ideas.

We plan to write a fanfic series for this AU. Well… we’ve been working on it~

Jasper and Raymond are literally no ideas, just soft & angsty vibes (Jasper is like, very fucked up but the eventual hurt/comfort and the "you're just a couple of years older than me but you're basically my parent and we are family for sure" dynamic is just everything)

Elphie and Elliott are totally a wild card honestly. They could be platonic besties, they could be the sweetest boyfriend and girlfriend (not my fault, it's the Tom&Zendaya vibes, I can't help it) but who knows? Not me.

The Emerald Bard: Part One

Synopsis: After joining Elphaba and Glinda on a trip to her birth city, Emerald Upland finds a kindred spirit in the Eccentric Oz, Feaux Wizard Deluxe.

(A/N: This is a pretty short and tame little intro to what will hopefully become a “fix it fic” series where The Wizard is actually less of a bad person and listens to the people of Oz and cares about them.)

“Are you sure?” Emerald asked again, still reeling from the offer. “The Wizard invited you to his personal palace and you want me to join you?”

“Em, you’re my sister, I want you to get to see where you came from.” Glinda smiled, the three girls huddled together conspiringly on the sofa as Glinda tested out her new Magical Manicure Kit on her sister.

Em loved The Uplands dearly. They were the only family she’d ever known, having been adopted when still a small child. And Glinda made certain that Em wanted for nothing, like any good big sister would.

“The letter said I could bring as many guests as I’d like and I want you two by my side. There’s no one else I can picture beside me.”

Elphaba sounded as if she’d been having visions again, her face distant for a moment.

“If you insist! I’d be honored to join you.”

Glinda squealed with delight at her sister’s agreement to the trip.

“Ooh! We have to go shopping the second we get there! Look out Emerald City! You’ve got three more Gems coming your way!”

A few days later, they were set up in lavish rooms in the Emerald palace, The Wizard’s Esteemed personal guests.

The problem of his non-magical status had indeed been a bump in the yellow brick road on the first day, but he and Elphaba were now chatting away like old friends, pondering how they could turn his image around and help the animals, while not lying to the people of Oz more than he already had.

And that was when Elphaba came to Emerald’s room, a grin on her face that Em hadn’t ever seen before.

“He wants to see you. Alone.” She said.

“Alone?!” Emerald asked. “Oh Elphie I almost fainted the day we got here! How am I going to hold a conversation with him?!”

“He’s not the talking head, remember? He’s a Man. A very nice one. I think you’ll get along fine, Em.” Elphaba grinned.

…

The thought of entering The Wizard of Oz’s Personal study made Em’s knees feel like they would buckle, but she awkwardly knocked anyway.

“Miss Emerald Upland …of The Upper Uplands. A Gem of my Very Own City. Emerald of my Emerald. How very nice to finally meet you properly.” The Wizard Ushered her in excitedly.

Em stood frozen for a momen, aghast at the Curly Haired motormouth in front of her. She still wasn’t accustomed to The Wizard being so friendly. She finally sat beside him on the large green sofa.

“Your sister and her… friend have had a lot to say about you. All good things, don’t worry. But I do have to ask, little Gemstone, Why have you been avoiding me for almost three days?” He asked, pouting dramatically.

Emerald’s face grew hot.

“I meant no disrespectation, your Ozness. I was… well, truthfully, I was afraid.” She said quietly.

The Wizard frowned a little. Emerald’s face practically burst into flames.

“Ah, I see. All of the mechanical head nonsense frightened you, I’m so terribly sorry. I’ve been tinkering with a new version, you know? A projection screen, something smaller. At any rate that’s not who I am. Not really.” He offered his hand out. “My name is actually Oscar. Oscar Zoroaster Phadrig Isaac Norman Henkle Emmannuel Ambroise Diggs. But please, call me Oscar. Or just Oz… It’s much less time consuming.”

“It’s a pleasure to make your acquaintance… Oscar. I’m not nearly as brilliant at magic as Elphaba is, but I gladly lend myself to your service. Magic or otherwise. Though I must tell you I’m more of a Bard than a Sorceress. My Magic is mostly spectacle.” Emerald admitted.

“Oh! You’re a bard?” The Wizard’s eyes sparkled with a new intrigue. “I’ve never had a bard in my palace before… how thrillifying. What’s your specialty, dear? I’d love to see you in your element.”

“Music, your Ozness.”

Oz’s face lit up even further at that, and he took Emerald’s hands in his with a delighted gasp. Emerald felt like her hands were live wires when they touched.

“Oh then this was meant to be! We adore music here in the palace. May I hear something? Something that isn’t about me?” He asked earnestly. “No pressure, none at all.”

Emerald tried to ignore the sparks she would undoubtably see if she looked down at their still tangled hands, her eyes locked onto Oz’s.

She realized in those short seconds how absolutely beautiful she could find someone. His eyes were dark, with flecks of green and blue in the light, and unbelievably kind.

Emerald nodded finally, settling on a lullaby from childhood.

“…if happy little bluebirds fly beyond the rainbow, why, then, oh why can’t I?”

The Wizard’s eyes had drifted closed, and he was smiling when Emerald was through. He opened them, gazing at Em curiously.

“You know that’s what I do? I help people fly over that rainbow.” Oz murmured. “…Do you like it here, little Gem? Could you be happy here?”

“Oh, Oz, it’s wonderful here! The culture of the City, the People, the magical sights? it’s all so wonderful….” Emerald agreed.

“You’d be able to sing, play music, write, perform plays, anything you’d like. I’ll make sure you have everything you could need. All of Oz’s best. And total creative control. I only ask that you stay by my side. And you’d get to see your Sister and Friend every day. They’re going to be my Ambassadors to the North and the West.” He explained. “Anything your heart desires, just name it. There’s something good here, I can tell.”

While Emerald started out Terrified of the Great and Terrible Wizard, this man in front of her made her feel something she couldn’t explain. It was like they were cut fron the same Eccentric cloth. Like their minds were peering into each other. And when they touched, it was like a current ran through the two of them, making them one.

Maybe that was why they were still holding hands…. And sitting so closely.

“I’m sorry I just…. i’ve never felt anything like this before. I’m not sure what to say…”

A force, almost like a magnet, was pulling the two together. At first it was slowly, then all at once. Oz untangled their hands, bringing their lips together. He tasted like peppermint, sweet and fresh. Emerald smiled, kissing him back.

A shrill, sharp gasp broke them apart, and Em was mortified to see none other than her sister standing in the doorway with her eyes as big as Saucers.

Oz shot Em a guilty look as she rushed to usher her frozen sister out of the doorway.

“It was… so nice to make your acquaintance, your Ozness. I look forward to… working with you.” Em curtsied, shoving her sister down the hallway.

“Emerald Upland you scandelcious little thing, you!” Glinda whispered excitedly.

“I have no idea what you’re talking about…”

as someone who ALSO attends the school of "using actors with terror connections for terror ocs" i endorse this HEARTILY. (i have liah o'prey and oliver dench as my joplittle kid ocs and they both played the kids of matthew mcnulty and liam garrigan respectively on domina)

i love love love the idea of chloe pirrie as molly malcolm! she's got elphie's big brown eyes and john's quiet intensity (and also john tells her that she has his mouth and his mother's nose and molly's just like "yeah well you're my mother so that checks out :)"

Honoria: Honestly how well her backstory fits into Final Fantasy XIV. I am certain that there will be people who assume we knew about Shadowbringers prior to porting her into the game but we really didn't. Every time the game offers us something to build off of it is a boon. She really is the gift that keeps on giving.

Also roleplaying her back in 2010 she was one of the rare times I, Dawn, got to front unambigiously in our pre-transition life.

Madison: I like that Madison, despite being a singlet, has her own level of trauma and maladaptive coping mechanisms that allows her to literally meet Belladonna half way. She understands that brains can be spicy and she is able to use her perspective to see things from her plural partner's perspective. I want to have this story be about healing and it is central to telling the story as I wish to tell it that Madison have her own journey to mental health and happiness, even if Belladonna's is center stage.

Belladonna: we won't make a joke and say our favorite part is "Bella" because we do not play favorites with alters. That all said our favorite part of Belladonna is that she is a vehicle for us to naturally discuss things like how our brain handles waking up in a trauma time state or days where we are blended. Her being a perspective character is a way of us kind of getting to display what living with a complex dissociative disorder feels like for us. We like that.

Honoria: She is bakery themed. In an Utena inspired AU her "heart weapon" was a giant whisk.

Madison: It has never come up in the story but inspired by Tsukutabe (as much of the story is) I have imagined their user icons on Discord. Madison's is a Aloloan Vulpix.

Belladonna: and Belladonna's is the flower she shares a name with. Maybe I'll have her change it to Elphie later on in the story?

- aspects we want to explore more

Honoria: This deep into FFXIV (we are in Shadowbringers 7.3 right now) Nori should have some more understanding of how she wishes to handle her story in Arcadia. She held some powerful titles that could unite the courts and rebuild Titania's fallen territories but couldn't wield them effectively and spent her efforts liberating Changelings (the Lost) on a very limited basis without impacting systemic change. I need to answer the question for her "what does she do when she returns to Arcadia" and though Shadowbringers gives us a damned good prompt as to where to start, we need to actually *answer* the question.

Madison: Madison has a lot of history that we know about but haven't put to the story yet. I want to flesh out her social circle and support cast. Belladonna has Dove and Kayleigh in her day to day life and at present Saph hasn't really made too many appearances. I have a couple flashback stories centered on Madison in mind but find them harder to write about as they would focus neither on hypnosis or plurality and we aren't confident enough in the story to survive without those pillars right now.

Belladonna: I really want to do a chapter dealing with dysphoria and being in the closet at some point. Flashback chapters are indulgences for us to explore with hurdles in our own journey that we have overcome. The focus of the story is the pair's romance and navigating the struggles of their present but Flashback chapters give a lot of context and I have to be careful about using them to full effect. We may get one of Ben and Marcie down the line but it's not a priority.

- fact we want people to know

Honoria: We had no idea Titania was in FFXIV when we started Nori's story and our party were "stepping on their tongues" (their words, not ours) every time we brought up the fact that Honoria was claimed and subjugated by Titania in her backstory.

Madison: Though Madison and Belladonna are fictionalized versions of Daja and ourselves they are *not* us. You would be surprised which stories are 100% true with names changed, though. Reality loans itself to fiction quite well. Also the story takes place in a reality where COVID never happened.

Belladonna: It's only implied because the system only know what they know but Belladonna's entire presence in the online hypnosis community was built up when Donna fronting, even in their youngest days. Aqua and Donna are the same alter under different names.

- favorite visual trait

Honoria: The original design for Honoria had braided wheat colored hair (a trait her FFXIV retainer has been given) and that was always our favorite part of her visual design. We switched it to red for FFXIV because her glamour is a disguise and we became so accustomed to it that we didn't want to switch it when the story gave us a chance to.

Madison: We usually go light on visual descriptions for Madison/Belladonna so don't usually keep a visual in our mind (honestly we just think of Daja and ourselves of whom each character is obviously based upon) but to select a trait, she has a radiant smile which is described in loving terms many times in the story.

Belladonna: same as Madison. Though pushed to answer we'd say her eyes which are expressive and signal which alter is fronting if you look closely enough.

Who would you cast as who if NRC (including your ocs) were to do a production of Wicked?

Oooooh...oh, that's a toughy. A super toughy. I'm gonna focus on the six most prominent characters in the story: Elphaba, Glinda, The Wizard, Madame Morrible, Fiyero, Nessarose, and Boq. Glinda Cater. I honestly can't think of anybody else who'd be better in that part. You need somebody who loves superficial elements and popularity, and who can also be perky and chipper and optimistic...BUT, you also need them to be able to flip that and be really mean or really vulnerable. I can see some characters who could work for one side or the other, but Cater is the only character where I think he could fit both sides and make it even remotely believable. The Wizard The Wizard is usually an older male actor, so I think it would be interesting to cast a staff member here. I'd say either Crowley himself or Sam would fit the bill best; Sam isn't really that much older than the main cast, obviously, but he's still staff so that applies. Either of their personalities and aesthetics could match that character, I feel. If we must cast a student, then I should say...either Idia or Azul. For probably obvious reasons in both cases. XD If you want to use any of my OCs, then I think either James or Eli could pull it off. Madame Morrible Similarly to the Wizard, I can see a staff member in that role, and I feel it would HAVE to be Divus Crewel. He's got the right balance of "fabulousness" and strict harshness that character demands. Once again, if we must cast a student...I should say Jamil would be best. Not for the "fabulousness," obviously, but specifically because of his similarly two-faced nature as a character. Elphaba I held off on Elphie because...there are actually quite a few characters I can see working for her, all in different ways or for different reasons. XD With my OCs, obviously, Theodore is the one to go with. He's based on the Wicked Witch of the West, and I actually used a bit of Elphaba (among other takes on the character) in conjuring up my ideas for him. Heck, I have two story ideas for him in mind, and both of them I plan to give titles taken from songs in the show - "Defying Gravity" and "No Good Deed." So that tells you everything. If you want to go with canon characters...I can safely say I feel it would have to be one of two characters: either Malleus or Vil. I can't think of anybody else who would fit better in any way. It has to be one of those two. Plus, the humor of either one of them against Cater as Glinda is freaking hilarious to me. XD Fiyero Ahhhhh, this is a hard one! Because there's absolutely nobody who I honestly feel really fits Fiyero perfectly in the canon cast! And there's also absolutely no one who I ship with either of my Elphaba picks OR Cater, for that matter! XD So, okay, let's just ignore the ship factor - we'll get over that awkwardness when able - and specifically focus on Fiyero's character. As far as the canon cast goes...Floyd could possibly work. That whole "Dancing Through Life" philosophy he has at the start would fit him well, and when Fiyero becomes the Scarecrow...well, look at Floyd and tell me he doesn't have a Scarecrow build, so to speak. XD For my OCs, I'd personally pick Nakoda, again due simply to that opening philosophy. Plus, seeing Nakoda have to play a daring and brave prince by the end of things honestly is HILARIOUS to me, he'd be SO freaking uncomfortable, especially given his scene partners. LOL

Nessarose Hmmmm...for the Wicked Witch of the East...this is another super hard one. Because there are essentially two different sides to Nessa: for the first act she's a sort of desperate, sweet character. In the second act, however, she's cold and volatile. Once again, I can think of characters who can fit either side, but not necessarily both. I guess if I HAD to choose...presuming Idia or Eli don't play the Wizard, either of them could possibly work here. Or...I dunno, maybe Smitty or Billy tries their best to NOT be adorable in the second act. And...somehow fit into a wheelchair, in the latter's case. XD Or perhaps Epel could work for the part, show his own meaner sides, but I dunno. This is probably the hardest one so far, to be honest. Boq I think either Deuce or Trey would work best here. Heck, if we make Epel into Nessa, then making Deuce into Boq would be decidedly ironic, since I ship them both so much. XD I will say that villifying either lad, given how Boq turns out by the end, does bother me a tad...but que sera sera. I am at the mercy of the script. :P This is a very rough lineup, but right now I think it's the best I can manage.
