Vera is an unusually vicious bloodsucker who’s never stuck in one place for very long…until a mysterious feeling pulls her right to the murder capital of the world: Santa Carla, California. Michael Emerson was tucked safely in bed in his new room that night. Sure, he was a little pissed off about that girl…okay, he was downright agitated. He felt desperate to meet someone, anyone in Santa Carla, and he had his heart set on the cute brunette from the boardwalk. The image of her face was seared into his mind, her smile beaming at him whenever he closed his eyes. He needed to know who she was, and he didn’t care if the guys she hung out with were criminals or low lives or gang bangers. In the morning, he’d go out and look for a job, and in the evening, he’d head to the boardwalk without his annoying little brother so that he might actually have a chance to find his mystery girl and have a real conversation with her.
Yeah, he had it all planned out. He had noticed how the bikers dressed, with their leather jackets and dangly earrings. There was bound to be a spot in town where he could find himself a jacket and some cooler sunglasses than the ones he already owned. If that girl liked bad boys, then he could make himself look the part, couldn’t he? Sam would probably give him shit for it, but he didn’t know anything. He paraded around in oversized designer shirts all day and stuck out like a sore thumb everywhere he went. At least Michael was making an attempt to fit in.
As he tried and failed to get to sleep, he wondered who that girl was. Santa Carla was a weird place full of weird people, but she looked so…nice. So normal. She didn’t look like she should be hanging around guys like that. And what was the deal with her grumpy friend? Michael thought she was hot, too, but more in a way that made him feel like she might cut his balls off, and he wasn’t so sure he was into that…and besides, she had totally made out with the Twisted Sister reject, hadn’t she? And that guy had glared daggers at Michael, so it was probably a better idea not to go after girls with boyfriends.
His eyes suddenly shot open.
Did the brunette have a boyfriend?
She hadn’t seemed all that thrilled to climb on the back of Billy Idol’s bike, but the guy hadn’t forced her. She went willingly, away from Michael and straight towards him, but there wasn’t any kissing or groping or even words exchanged. So were they together? Did things like that even matter in Santa Carla? Michael was the new guy in town, and that gang had all been watching him like they wanted to kick his ass just for being there. Backing off would be the smart thing to do, the thing least likely to get him beat up. He knew he should probably just cut his losses and accept that he wasn’t cool enough for a girl who hung out with guys like that, and he knew that he probably didn’t want to get involved with whatever wild shit that gang got into. But was he gonna give up? Was he gonna do the smart thing?
Hell no.
He rolled over, trying to get comfortable. Yeah, tomorrow he’d go work on his new look, and he’d totally win that girl over. At the very least, maybe if he looked the part, the guys she hung around might respect him. He already had a bike, even if it wasn’t as cool as theirs, and a new city meant that he could leave his old self behind and make something new. The thought was a comfort, and he finally drifted off to sleep, safe and sound, oblivious to the horrors that so often plagued Santa Carla at night.
-0-
Those horrors had names, of course.
“Marko! Hurry it up!” David snapped from the cave entrance.
“I’m coming, Christ!” Marko rolled his eyes, letting the pigeon he held in his hand go to fly up to its roost.
“You pay more attention to those damn birds than you do me,” David sneered as Marko approached.
“Oh, I’m sorry,” he said, voice dripping with sarcasm. “I didn’t realize I was neglecting you, dear…”
David wrinkled his nose as Marko put a hand on his chest and leaned in, batting his eyelashes. “You’re obnoxious.”
“I’ll be sure to have dinner on the table by four, honey, please forgive me—“
“Hey, uh, what about my dinner?” Paul asked impatiently. “You’re holdin’ us up, David said he had somethin’ exciting planned—“
“Can’t you tell I’m smoothing things over with my loving husband?” Marko snapped at him, dropping the atomic housewife act entirely.
“Yeah, well I’m hungry!” Paul hissed.
A moment later they were lunging at each other, and Vera was cackling in delight from her perch on Dwayne’s back. David still hadn’t told any of them who he was planning on hunting, but now that they were all back together again and all the sad talk seemed to be behind them, she was just glad to be going out to feed in the first place. She could really go for a bite after such a weird evening.
Laddie and Star were in bed already, the former asleep while the latter stayed up to read a book and fantasize about the boy she had met on the boardwalk. By the time Vera and David had gotten back from visiting Max, Star had already tucked herself away behind the silks and lace, and they had more pressing matters to attend to than bothering her.
Like corralling Paul and Marko and encouraging them to at least make their way outside while they fought.
“Where are we going?” Dwayne asked as he stepped around Marko’s flailing arms, very narrowly avoiding his claws.
“Back towards town,” David smirked.
“Who do you wanna go after?” Vera asked, resting her chin on Dwayne’s shoulder as he carried her.
David’s smirk turned into a grin. “Greg and Shelly.”
Dwayne paused in surprise, and then his lips spread into a grin of his own. A dangerous growl started up in the back of his throat, a low, guttural sound that Vera could feel in her very bones. He was already breathing hard in anticipation, the dark brown of his irises melting into that striking, predatory gold that signified shifting. His grip on her legs tightened and she felt claws piercing her flesh, and when she looked at the others, she saw that they were faring similarly. Paul and Marko were back on their feet already, Paul trembling with excitement while Marko gnawed at his thumb, both staring at David with wild eyes.
He just laughed that cruel laugh and took to the sky.
Vera could have let go of Dwayne to fly on her own, but he was still holding onto her as he leapt after David. She had to bite her lip to keep herself from laughing at his eagerness to tear Greg limb from limb, and as they flew along the bay, the boys kept filling her head with images of what they wanted to do to their victims.
Paul was hoping to rip Shelly’s throat out, plain and simple. He’d been waiting forever to finally eat her, and he wasn’t going to waste any time if he got to her first. Marko was planning on gutting Greg like a pig, taking extra pleasure in imagining how his guts would spill out of him and the look on his face when he realized what was happening. David just wanted to tear them both apart, go for a major artery—whichever he found first—and let the blood spray out as their terrified hearts pumped it out for him.
And Dwayne wanted to pull Greg’s spine out, clean and fast and simple.
Vera felt a shiver run through her. She didn’t know whose thoughts to focus on, the four of them all too excited to quiet down. This was more chaotic than when they had hunted Vernon down, and they were more vicious this time around. She could tell how much they absolutely loathed Greg, and Shelly was just an unfortunate girl who was into the wrong slimeball.
What’s the deal with these two, anyway? She asked, trying to send her thoughts cutting through the barrage of gore they were all thinking up. She’d encountered the humans before, sure, and they were less than chill, but she got the feeling they had a lot more history than she had seen.
Greg’s a grade A piece of shit, Paul answered.
He loves to hate us, Marko added. Thinks he’s real hot shit ‘cause he’s in a surf gang. They tear up our town like they own the place.
He’s an obnoxious piece of shit who thinks he runs the boardwalk, David drawled. Been on my shit list since the day we met him months ago. It’s finally time to give him a piece of my mind.
Why now? Vera asked.
Because it’s time we put our foot down. David growled. This is our boardwalk. It’s time we started acting like it again. Things are changin’ and I’m not sittin’ by anymore.
Yeah! Paul agreed. I’ve been waitin’ for this one for so long…
I know, David grinned, laughing darkly. Now let’s fucking go.
They erupted in a series of shouts that sounded more like howls, too excited to give a shit about being quiet. If anyone down on the ground heard them, they might inclined to think Santa Carla was haunted by some sort of ghouls or banshees…but more than likely, any humans who were still out at such a late hour were too fucked up or too tired to put much stock into the unearthly cries up in the clouds. They were most likely ignored, written off as just another one of those weird Santa Carla things that tended to just happen, and as Vera clung to Dwayne’s back, she found herself glad to be living (un-living?) in a place where vampires seemed able to be themselves.
“There they are,” she heard Paul growl.
She looked down and saw that they had reached a scruffy stretch of beach, and Vera recognized it as the sort of place young couples drove out to in order to spend some quality time together. The bright lights of the boardwalk were still shining across the water, the roller coaster looking especially beautiful from so far away. Why hadn’t she and the boys ever wandered out that way to relax? It was the perfect spot to bring some beers and have a private party. It seemed like Greg and Shelly might be onto something, if Paul’s nose was right and they were there.
Sure enough, at the very top of the hill, parked all alone and looking particularly vulnerable, was a tan car…and Vera could see it rocking slightly.
“Oh, gross,” Marko bared his teeth in an eager grin.
Dwayne shrugged Vera off of his back and she reluctantly let go of him, hovering in the air as she watched him roll his shoulders. He returned Marko’s grin and then looked at Paul, whose eyes were yellow and wild and full of that crazed hunger they were all feeling, and together, the two of them dove for the car.
“Quit!” Vera heard Shelly’s laugh from the backseat.
“C’mon,” Greg said between playful growls, his voice muffled. “Let’s have some fun–”
Marko landed next to the car and gave it a light shove, grinning as he heard Shelly’s heartbeat suddenly speed up.
“What was that?” she hissed.
“What was what?” Greg asked.
“I thought I heard something…”
And then all hell broke loose, as usual.
“What is that?” Shelly shrieked as the roof of the car was torn off, Paul and Dwayne each holding a side.
The air was alive with the scent of terror, Greg and Shelly screaming so loudly that Vera thought their throats might start bleeding. It didn’t matter if they did or not, though–their time had come to an end, and when David landed on the hood of the car and they twisted to look at him, they ran out of things to scream about.
“C’mon, baby, what’s the matter?” Paul cackled, lunging towards Shelly. “Bat got your tongue?”
Because he did.
He did have her tongue, clamped between his teeth, bloody and floppy and horrifying as he tore it out of her mouth. She was silent, staring at her attacker with wide eyes, raising a shaky hand to her chin. Blood gushed out, painting her teeth and lips, but she didn’t scream, because she was so far beyond terror that she couldn’t do anything.
And then Paul and David dove in, and Shelly was history.
Greg was trying to shout, thrashing in Marko’s grip as he was lifted into the sky. Buckets of blood rained down, Dwayne tearing him open with dark red claws that could never really be scrubbed clean after something like this. Scraps of shredded clothing fluttered down through the air, and by the time Greg’s body was allowed to hit the ground again, it was little more than an unrecognizable chunk of meat.
Vera, whose very teeth were aching with hunger at this point, followed it down. Her boys were extremely messy eaters, and not particularly good at getting as much out of their meals as possible. When she descended on Greg’s mangled, barely-alive body, there was plenty of blood left for her to enjoy…so she shredded him the rest of the way and had a little fun with it.
It wasn’t long before they were all satisfied, faces and hands caked in blood, appetites satiated for the moment. The boys were still wild, chests heaving from the rush and the excitement even as they pushed the car into the sea and tossed the corpses in with it. They splashed around in the shallows, shoving each other, wrestling and fighting in the sand. Vera found herself dragged into the middle of it all, crushed beneath Paul as he was thrown down on top of her and hoisted onto Dwayne’s shoulders as he ran from Marko.
It was as if they hadn’t just murdered and eaten two humans, as if they were just normal people having fun on a summer night. The ocean air was invigorating, filling up lungs that didn’t always need to be filled, egging on monsters that didn’t need encouragement; they were having fun, and they were free, and in that moment, it seemed like there was nothing in the entire world that could change that.
-0-
“This is the life, huh?” David ginned, arm around Vera’s shoulders.
She glanced up at him. In the dark of the cave, his eyes seemed even brighter than they usually were, a piercing, unnatural yellow that shone even when there was no light to reflect off of them.
“You’re in a good mood,” she remarked, leaning down to pull her boots off.
“Been wantin’ to get rid of those two for a while now,” he said, stepping away to kick his own boots off. “One less annoyance to deal with.”
“Still plenty of others left, though.”
His expression soured. “Don’t remind me.”
“Didn’t think I had to.”
Vera watched as David huffed and then ascended to the rafters in a flash, gripping a beam with clawed feet and immediately crossing his arms over his chest as if he were already asleep. She rolled her eyes at his childish behavior and followed, shoving against his side until he relented another huff and slid an arm around her.
“Tomorrow, Star’ll find that guy again and that’ll finally be over with.” David grumbled.
“What makes you so sure she’ll kill him right away?” Vera asked.
“You don’t think she will?”
“I think she’s nervous.”
“She can’t afford to be nervous anymore.” He snapped. “If she knows what’s good for her, she’ll take care of puppy dog-eyes and finally join us.”
Vera frowned. “It can’t be fun, being caught in limbo like that. I mean, I don’t see the point in not committing fully at this point…”
“I can’t even remember being a half-vampire.” David shrugged. “Pretty sure I had my first kill immediately.”
“Alright, no need to brag.”
“What?” He smirked. “I was born for this life, baby.”
“Born to sleep all day?”
“And party all night.”
“Hell yeah!” Paul shouted as he flew to his roost, the rafter shaking with the force of his claws gripping it.
“Y’know, David…” Dwayne said, voice low and grumbly with sleep as he joined them and settled in.
“What, Dwayne?” He asked, sounding irritated.
“…you never told us what Max said earlier.”
David was silent for a moment, grumpily squaring his jaw before he spoke again. “He’s in love with that lady.”
The boys were silent for a moment.
“You mean like…” Marko trailed off.
“Yeah. I do.”
“The redhead from the shop?” Paul asked, scoffing.
Yes. That one.” David grumbled.
“So why’s that our problem?” Marko huffed.
“Because he expects us to play nice,” David hissed.
“Because he wants to bring her into the family,” Vera interjected.
She was met with a series of growls and grumbles, the boys all glancing at each other warily.
“He sounded serious about it,” she added.
“And let me guess,” Marko drawled, “he expects us to do something about it.”
“…yeah, he mentioned something…”
“He said she’s got two sons,” David sighed. “He said we’ve met them.”
Paul rolled his eyes. “We meet a lot of dudes.”
“I don’t suppose he said anything more helpful,” Marko hissed.
“Of course not.” David snapped. “But he gave us their names. Sam and Michael.” His jaws parted in a wide yawn as he pulled Vera closer. “Tomorrow night we’ll find them and get a better look at who exactly the old man expects us to play nice with.”
“And Star’ll finally have a decent meal,” Marko grinned. “Big night.”
“Big night.” David agreed.
Big night, Vera thought, frowning to herself as she tried to settle in for the morning.

(I’m fucking dying they’re so cute in this gif)
Vera woke up feeling badass and full of herself.
Two weeks of nothing but feeding and fucking and relaxing had her on top of the world, and as she stretched her arms down below her head, she heard a satisfying crack.
“Mm, that sounded good as fuck,” Marko mumbled, nuzzling up against her.
“Good evening, Angel,” Vera smiled, leaning back slightly as his hair fell in her face.
There was an interesting buzz in the air, she realized as she slowly woke. Something felt exciting, but she couldn’t tell if it was coming from one of the boys or herself, and she couldn’t think of any good reason for them to be so giddy. Nothing especially interesting had happened over the last several days—she had taken Laddie for funnel cakes, eaten a few surfers, stopped in to bug Max and bring treats for Thorn. (“You’re spoiling him,” Max had said. “I don’t care,” Vera had replied.)
She and Star had milled around on the boardwalk together some, learning to enjoy each other’s company. Star wasn’t half bad when she wasn’t being totally stubborn, and when they had something to talk about besides the morality of killing to survive, she could actually be very agreeable. Just the night before, the two had done some shopping together to get away from David and his sour mood, and Vera had found herself enjoying it way more than she ever expected.
David still hadn’t chosen someone for Star to chow down on. It was pissing him off, quite frankly, and while the others all dicked around like usual, he spent a fair amount of time sulking. He always watched all the guys who stared at Star and Vera, but none of them were special. None of them deserved to be her first meal, and even though Santa Carla was full of new faces every single night, none of them worked.
Maybe tonight would finally be the night, though.
“What’s everybody so excited about?” Paul asked groggily. “You two lovebirds makin’ the bat with two backs without even inviting me?”
“I don’t even know what the hell that means…” Marko grumbled.
“Well, someone’s all pumped up,” Paul yawned and shook his head, looking around. “So what’s goin’ on?”
“It’s not any of us,” Dwayne said, chest rumbling against Vera’s back.
She hummed and snuggled back against him. He was always extra warm when he had fresh blood in his system, and tonight was no exception. His bare skin was like a heating pad, and as his arms wrapped around her waist and pulled her closer, she considered going back to sleep. It wouldn’t be the first time she slept in; as they all settled into a routine, Vera relaxed more and more. Life was good in Santa Carla. It was nice and easy, and she felt safe in her den, surrounded by her boys.
They felt safe with her, too; they didn’t mind as much when she was out of their sight, trusting that she had a handle on Santa Carla and could take care of anything that might threaten her. Things were beginning to feel normal for them again, as they learned to give Vera freedom to wander, and they fell back into old habits from before she had come to town. They terrorized the boardwalk, they relaxed in their downtime…and they enjoyed each other’s presence in a way that was only possible thanks to their bonds.
The first time she had seen it, Vera felt like she was intruding on a private moment. David, sitting with Marko and purring, like a happy, lazy cat enjoying the sunshine. Grumpy, sulking David, perfectly content to let Marko rub his face against his jaw while the others chilled nearby. It had seemed so simple and yet so intimate that Vera almost didn’t know what to do, but then she allowed herself to stay and just watch them and she realized that it was something they were allowing her to see.
They were all like that with each other, she came to realize. Paul and Marko liked to snuggle during the day. David enjoyed some physical attention from them now and then. And Dwayne…everybody turned to Dwayne when they weren’t feeling good about something, and he had a knack for fixing it then and there.
And somehow, Vera was fitting right in. She carved out a little space for herself, and she wasn’t even stepping on any toes. As the days passed and things calmed down, everything was becoming more and more comfortable, and aside from the Star problem, things were good.
“It’s…” David mumbled, rousing himself and furrowing his brow as he familiarized himself with the waking world again, “…Max?”
Vera frowned and looked at him. “Huh?”
David yawned and stretched, letting go of the pipe he liked to hang from and flexing his clawed toes. “Max is excited about something.”
“Weird…” Paul muttered.
“He’s never this happy,” Marko commented. “Ask him what’s up.”
“Why don’t you?” David growled.
“He won’t tell me.” Marko rolled his eyes. “He always talks to you.”
“Yeah, just do it,” Paul agreed, nudging David with his elbow. “Chat with the old man for once.”
David shouldered him away, grumbling to himself as he turned his head and pulled his collar up around his neck. Then, he got that absentminded, distant feeling about him, and Vera knew that he was trying to bug his sire.
“Come on, boys,” She said, shuffling away from Dwayne. “Let’s leave him alone.”
She heard Paul huff, but then the three of them were following her down through the narrow tunnel that kept their roost so secluded. They grabbed their boots, all shoving them on unceremoniously before Paul and Marko decided they had too much energy and had to chase each other the rest of the way to the main cavern. Vera hung back with Dwayne, taking his hand when he offered it and accepting a sweet kiss when he bent down.
“You know, I haven’t seen much of you lately,” she commented as they walked. “I miss my Dwayne time.”
His chest rumbled with a deep purr. “Can’t get enough of me?”
“Never,” she stretched up to peck his cheek. “You guys haven’t been eating as a pack this past week. I keep having to watch you charm girls on the boardwalk to catch your prey…”
“Just a hunting tactic, baby,” he said, letting go of her hand to slip his arm around her waist. “You know that’s all it is.”
“I still get jealous,” she pouted. “Especially when you pull them in close enough to touch…”
“Like this?” He suddenly had her pressed up against the wall, a hand resting above her head so that he could lean in.
“Exactly like this,” she grinned, sliding her arms around his neck and pulling him closer.
There was something about Dwayne that was so effortlessly sexy, and even Vera, a fellow vampire, couldn’t understand it. As his lips brushed over hers, she felt her undead heart jumping in her chest as if she were a schoolgirl with a crush, her breath hitching in her throat. His hands moved down to grip the soft skin on her exposed waist, squeezing it appreciatively before slipping further to cup her ass.
“How bout a quickie to make it up to you?” He breathed in her ear, a hand creeping down the front of her shorts. “Laddie and Star aren’t up yet, ‘n the others are preoccupied…”
“Fuck…” Vera managed to huff out. “You drive a hard bargain, Dwayne.”
He chuckled, nipping at her earlobe as he sank a finger into her. “I’m a good negotiator…”
He was balls deep inside of her by the time David came strolling out, the blond stopping to chat as if they weren’t in the middle of something rather intimate.
“I talked to Max,” he said, leaning on the wall next to Vera.
“O-oh yeah?” She asked, glancing at him as Dwayne’s lips found her throat.
“Yeah.” David looked down at the cigarette in his hand, a perturbed expression on his face. “He thinks he found someone.”
“S-someone?” Vera asked, finding it considerably more difficult to carry a conversation when Dwayne was rutting into her over and over.
“Says he felt it the minute he woke up tonight.” David said. “He’s already at the store. Wouldn’t shut the hell up about it.”
“It’s nice that he’s—ah!—excited about something,” Vera panted out.
Dwayne grunted in agreement, paying even less attention than she was.
“It’s annoying.” David scoffed, lighting his cigarette and leaning his head back against the wall. “He was talking my fuckin’ ear off in there, goin’ on about how today’s the day and finally, after centuries, he can be happy…fuckin’ annoying.”
“I think it’s nice that he can be happy now,” Vera finished her statement with a squeal, digging her nails into Dwayne’s shoulders as he readjusted her position and thrusted deeper.
David took a drag off his cigarette and exhaled the smoke through his nose. “Guess it is.” Then, he seemed to finally look at what the two of them were doing, and he smirked, clapping Dwayne’s shoulder. “Finish already so we can get goin’. I wanna go see the old man.”
“It’d be easier if you got outta my face,” Dwayne huffed, catching Vera’s lips with his.
“Yeah, yeah. Hurry up.” David finally stalked away, flicking cigarette ash on the floor.
Dwayne just shook his head, moving to bite Vera’s jaw and focusing on the task at hand. A few minutes later, they were walking out to meet the others, Vera adjusting her hastily-buttoned shorts and smoothing down her wild hair. Paul and Marko were staring at the two of them knowingly, David finishing his cigarette as he sat in his wheelchair.
“What?” Vera teased when she caught Marko staring at her.
“Nothin’,” he sighed, leaning his chin on the back of the couch.
“Jealous?” She smirked.
“Yeah,” Paul sighed, mimicking Marko.
She stood between them, running her fingers through their hair. “Why don’t you just Fuck each other if you need it so bad?”
They glanced at each other before looking back at her.
“We’d rather both be inside you,” Marko said.
“Yeah.” Paul agreed. “Same time, maybe.”
Vera chuckled. “I’m sure that can be arranged.”
“Really?” Their faces lit up.
“You act like that hasn’t happened before,” she laughed, slipping away to approach David.
He seemed lost in thought, his eyes glazed over and distant. At first she wasn’t sure that he had noticed her at all, but when she got close enough, he shifted slightly and invited her to take a seat in his lap. When she nuzzled her face into his neck, though, he barely responded, only acknowledging her with a quiet grunt,
“Hey, handsome,” she said, testing the waters.
Another grunt.
Are you really going to see Max? She asked in his head.
That finally got a response out of him.
Me ‘n the boys will. He replied, dropping his cigarette and wrapping his arms around her to hoist her closer to his chest. You can stay with Star and Laddie if you want.
And miss out on my favorite video store clerk? No way. She grinned, kissing his cheek.
David rolled his eyes like he always did, then relaxed a little and gave her a proper kiss. “Dwayne, get Laddie up, would ya? I’m bored out of my fuckin’ skull.”
“I’m already up!” Came Laddie’s voice from the far end of the cavern.
He suddenly burst out from between the silks hanging from the ceiling, already dressed and ready for the night. Star followed, an excited smile on her face and a little bounce in her step that had even David doing a double take.
Dwayne caught Laddie, grabbing at his face as he tried to wiggle away. “Brush your teeth?”
“Yes!” The little boy said as he thrashed. “Can we go now?”
“You’re just as impatient as David,” Paul laughed, jumping up off of the couch.
“I want a funnel cake!”
“Didn’t you just have one a few days ago?” Vera asked.
“So? I want more!”
“Just as greedy as David, too.” Marko snorted.
David scoffed and stood up, taking Vera with him. “If everyone’s ready, we’re leaving.”
She squirmed out of his arms and he let her go, taking the lead while she hung behind to greet Laddie properly. She scooped him up despite his wiggling and protesting, giving him a kiss on the nose before releasing him again. As he ran off, trying to catch up to Dwayne, Star was suddenly at Vera’s side, offering her a hand.
“Hey,” Vera said slowly as she took it.
“Hey.” Star replied, just as slowly.
They looked at each other for a moment, and then burst out laughing at the awkwardness of it all.
“You look nice.” Vera commented, eyeing Star’s white top. “Big plans?”
“There’s a concert on the beach I really wanna go to tonight,” Star said as they trailed after the boys. “Wanna come? I was going to take Laddie.”
Vera hesitated. She really wanted to pester Max with the others, but a concert sounded fun, and she had been enjoying Star’s company lately. Maybe she could do both?
“Sure,” she finally smiled. “That sounds nice.”
Star grinned and skipped ahead a few steps, pulling Vera along with her. Soon, they were running and laughing, skidding to a stop in front of the motorcycles while the boys watched them with eyes that were practically bulging out of their heads.
What the hell is goin’ on? Marko asked as the girls actually giggled.
I dunno, but it’s kinda hot, right?
Shut up, Paul.
“Hey,” David barked, revving his bike, “quit wasting time. Come on.”
The laughter subsided as Star let go of Vera’s hand—something that Paul had been eyeing very closely—and climbed onto the back of David’s bike, a huge smile plastered on her face. Vera sat behind Marko, and with Laddie safely in tow with Dwayne, the group was off, bikes roaring up the path and across Hudson’s Bluff.
The boys were even rowdier than usual as they drove, howling like banshees as they tore down the beach towards the boardwalk. It seemed like Max’s enthusiasm was affecting everyone tonight, and as the boys raced each other, Vera leaned back and threw her arms up into the air to feel the wind.
“Careful, babe!” Marko yelled over the roar of the bikes and the shouts of his boys.
“What? Scared?” She teased.
“No way!”
The bike suddenly reared up under them as he popped a wheelie, Vera shrieking in surprise and locking her arms around him again.
“Scared?” he sneered, showing that little nasty streak of his that she adored so much.
“You’re such a little shit!” she laughed, pinching his side.
“Just for you,” she heard him say as she craned her neck to peek over his shoulder. They were blowing past bonfires, spraying sand up in partygoers’ faces and receiving a slew of colorful insults in turn.
They parked the bikes in their usual spot, and as the engines finally quieted down, Vera could hear music coming from the bandstand. Damn, was that the concert already? What time was it, anyways? She caught Star glancing towards her hopefully, and she couldn’t help the smile that crept onto her face. Yeah, a show sounded pretty good, and she could always go bug Max later, right?
“Gonna finally catch a bite to eat tonight, Star?” Paul sneered, leering at her as she stepped off of David’s bike.
“Can it, barf bag,” Star growled aggressively enough that he was taken aback.
He blinked in surprise as Marko howled with laughter, the two blondes quickly starting up one of their usual fights while David and Dwayne looked at Star in surprise.
“Well, well,” David smirked. “Cat’s got claws tonight, huh?”
“So?” Star asked, moving to stand next to Vera. “We’re going to the concert. Come on, Laddie.”
David actually looked a little bit impressed with her tone. “Is that so?”
“Yes.” Star squared her jaw, looking him in the eye. “Do you have a problem with that, David?”
“Not at all, Star.”
“Well…good.” she took Laddie’s hand as he bounced over to her, grabbing Vera as well before turning and marching the three of them off towards the bandstand.
Vera looked back over her shoulder and gave David a little shrug. He just chuckled as they left, the sound echoing in her head well after he was out of earshot. She could tell that he was amused, and the vibe in the air had him happy and relaxed for once. What was he going to find out from Max, she wondered? She hadn’t been paying much attention when he had come to interrupt her and Dwayne, but she could vaguely remember him saying something about someone being in town. Maybe he’d be nice enough to give her the details later, if she didn’t manage to catch up with them in time to hear for herself.
“Wow,” Star let out a breath as they weaved through the crowd. “I’ve never talked to him like that.”
“Honestly, I’m impressed,” Vera said. “You’ve got a good mouth on you.”
A nearby woman scoffed. “Dykes.”
Vera paused, turning to lunge at her on impulse, but Star pulled her back.
“Hey. Leave it.” she murmured. “Ignore them.”
“Humans are stupid,” Vera mumbled, falling back into step with her again.
“Yeah,” Star sighed. “People can be dumb. You get used to it, I guess. I used to hear so much worse before David took me in.”
Vera gave her a sidelong glance. “How’d that happen, anyways?”
Star shrugged. “I was a runaway. I ended up here and got myself into some…some trouble for a while. I used to sleep down on the beach, just over there.” She pointed towards a little spot tucked under the steps leading up to the boardwalk. “I was in a pretty bad spot when they found me. Guess I’m sorta still in a bad spot, but…I’ve got a bed to sleep in, at least. And Laddie.”
“And Vera!” Laddie piped up.
“Yeah, of course,” Star smiled down at him before looking back up.
They were approaching from behind the bandstand, and the concert was already in full swing. Star led the way through the crowd, keeping Laddie close as she carved a path for them. She was already dancing a little, smiling and bobbing her head while the three of them ran under the stage and finally popped out on the correct side. Star was determined to find a spot with a good view, tugging Laddie and Vera along with her as she spotted some stands off to the side that would be perfect, and as she turned to look behind her, Vera managed to get a look at the very muscular, very shiny man on the stage. He wore chains wrapped around his neck and a saxophone hanging in front of his chest, bright leggings and a codpiece covering his lower half.
Huh. Not exactly a bad sight. Not what she was expecting, but not a bad sight at all.
Not too far away—in fact, entirely too close by—Michael Emerson was standing next to a trash can bonfire and also his brother, wearing his leather jacket in an effort to look as cool and tough as possible while surrounded by the Santa Carla nightlife. Sam was enjoying the concert, clapping along with the crowd, but honestly, this sort of music wasn’t really Michael’s thing, and god, he was bored.
Until he spotted a head of thick brunette hair, and his attention was suddenly all focused in the same spot.
His eyes followed the girl as she climbed up onto the bleachers above him, and he was so into her that he almost didn’t notice the kid holding onto her hand as she danced or the other, more unsettling, girl at her side. The three of them definitely made for a strange trio, the little boy wearing a totally weird, old fashioned outfit while the black haired girl was looking around like she wanted a fight.
That brunette, though…damn, he liked her.
“Star, you’ve got an admirer,” Vera commented when she noticed the guy staring up at them. “He’s great at subtlety, too.”
“Hm? Really?” Star asked as she swayed with the music.
“Oh, he’s super into you,” Vera nearly wrinkled her nose.
“Who?” Star finally spotted him, slowing her movements down as she took in his features.
“You’ll know him. He’s the one mesmerized by your supernatural beauty.” Vera laughed.
“Oh yeah. I see him.” Star bit her lip in an effort to keep from smiling too much. “He’s kinda cute…”
“Yeah, to eat,” Vera grinned.
And Star actually laughed along with her. Maybe she was getting somewhere with the hippie girl, after all.
“Okay, what do I do?” She asked, glancing back down at the boy again. “He’s still staring…”
“Play hard to get,” bumped her with her hip. “Be sexy and mysterious. That always reels the boys right in.”
Star’s laugh was drowned out by the sax, but Michael could swear he heard it. He watched as the two girls talked and looked at him, and whenever he could, he was trying to catch the brunette’s eye. Shit, she was pretty…the other one wasn’t too bad either, but he had the feeling that she could rip him apart with her bare hands, and he didn’t know that he liked that. He wasn’t that into heavy metal chicks anyways.
He was vaguely aware of Sam grabbing his face and trying to get his attention, but he was too busy staring at the brunette to care. Had she seen him? Yeah, she definitely noticed. Did she like him? He hadn’t gotten any scowls or glares yet, not even from the other one.
Then he caught her eye one more time, and she smiled at him.
Okay, yeah. He definitely had a chance here.
She turned, though, fluffy hair bouncing behind her as she disappeared down the back of the bleachers, and Michael had no choice but to follow her.
Star’s got an admirer, Vera thought, immediately tattling as she followed the other girl.
The hell’s that mean? David asked haughtily.
And then, the floodgates opened, and her head was suddenly full of Paul and Marko.
What’s she doin’?
Is she fuckin’ a guy?
No way, dumbass. She’s a total prude, remember?
To you, maybe.
Boys, Vera interrupted. You’re gonna give me a headache.
We wouldn’t have so many questions if you would just tell us—
Star picked up a cute guy at the concert. She said. He’s following us now. I think this might be the one.
Like…the one? Paul asked.
Fuckin’ finally, David sighed. Keep an eye on ‘em. We’re at VideoMax.
And with that, they all finally went quiet, leaving Vera to tighten her hold on Star’s hand and follow her back up to the boardwalk.
Outside the store, the boys were lurking. The weather was perfect, as usual, and the crowds were even heavier than they had been lately. Max hadn’t told them to fuck off yet, so they were people-watching, trying to decide if the object of his attention was somewhere nearby. Honestly, the old man was so wrapped up in his weird hopeful feelings that David doubted he even noticed them out there, and that was fine by him.
The cry of a young boy had him snapping out of his thoughts. For a moment, he thought it was Laddie, hurt and afraid, and he was about to go absolutely ballistic. Then he realized it was just a kid outside the store, and he relaxed again, watching as the boy looked around and called for his mom. The sight pulled at David’s cold, dead heartstrings a little bit. He knew how much it sucked being lost. He had a soft spot for kids who needed homes.
When a woman with red lips and short ginger hair stopped to speak to the boy, David watched curiously. She looked nice, speaking in a soft, reassuring voice, and as he glanced back towards the store, David could see Max looking up at her. He was watching her, smiling slightly, tensing as if he wanted to go speak to her.
Was she the one he was so excited about?
“C’mon,” David said with a smirk. “Let’s go check out some movies.”
The boys followed him in a line, walking in order like they always did. It had been forever since any of them besides David had entered the store, but it was just as bright and trendy as they remembered, acrylic cut outs hanging from the ceiling and movie standees leaning against every wall.
It was mildly busy, but none of the customers were at the counter. That meant that Max and Maria, the girl he had hired a few months back, were both free to do as they pleased—for Maria, that meant flipping through a magazine. For Max, it meant staring out the window at a woman. Of course, he noticed them the moment they walked in, tearing his eyes away from the new object of his desires and glaring at David as the boys passed the counter.
What, old man? David smirked. We interrupting something?
Thorn growled from his spot next to Max’s feet, but their sire didn’t say a word. He just watched as his boys circled the counter, Paul eyeing Maria as if she might make a nice snack.
Not that one. Max finally snapped. She has potential.
Chill out, Max, David said, grinning at him.
Watch it.
And then, the woman from outside was walking in with the lost little boy in tow, and Max’s attention was suddenly completely on her.
David watched curiously. Was this real? It wasn’t just Max getting a little too into hunting for his next dinner? No, he was speaking to her genuinely, or at least as genuinely as he was capable of. While Paul and Marko grabbed VHS cases off the counter and fucked with them, David was busy wondering if there was a chance that this woman might become part of their family.
“We only come in here to watch one thing,” Marko said, leaning over the counter towards Maria.
The girl laughed, and David took the opportunity to look at her. She was nice, and not totally unlike them. He knew that Max had found her starving on the beach and given her food and a job. He wondered if Vera and Star would get along with her if it came down to it.
“Leave the nice girl alone, Marko,” David chuckled, leading the way back around the other side of the circular checkout area. Don’t get too attached. You can’t fuckin’ eat her.
I don’t want to! Marko protested as he followed at the end of the line.
Yeah. Sure, Angelface.
By the time they reached Max’s side again, he was offering the mystery woman a lollipop, and she was accepting it. David paused behind her, nostrils flaring slightly as he took in her scent. She smelled…nice. Warm. Kind.
Max saw the boys pause behind the woman and he immediately straightened up. Oh, he didn’t like them being near her yet, did he? That was definitely worth teasing him about later. The old fuck, suddenly all territorial about a lady? That was an absolute riot.
“I thought I told you boys not to come in here.” Max growled.
And that was their signal to leave.
Dwayne looked at him with an even expression, like always. He didn’t particularly like Max, but he owed him a lot, and he always listened when the old man told him to do something. Paul ran into Dwayne’s back and put a hand on his shoulder, grinning as he looked at the woman speaking to Max before they left the store. And Marko…he was bringing up the rear, looking between Max and the woman curiously, with a look on his face that Max didn’t particularly like.
He never knew what to think of Marko, though.
“Who the hell was that?” Paul asked as they walked away down the street.
“No idea,” David said. “But Max likes her.”
“More like loves her,” Marko caught up with them.
“She seemed nice.” Dwayne commented.
“Gotta admit she did,” David agreed. “Least we know who he was so excited about.”
“Think he’s serious about her?” Paul asked as they reached their bikes.
“Oh, I think he’s very serious about her.” David said. “And we’re gonna find out why.”

Poor Vernon didn’t stand a chance.
Then again, nobody really did once David had his sights set on them.
Watching the way he became so incredibly focused and determined to wait and track his prey once things had died down on the boardwalk gave Vera a glimpse at a side of David that she hadn’t really seen yet. He was cold, calculating, and totally singleminded. Even while they dicked around and got into trouble on the beach, she could tell that he had tunnel vision, and all he could do was think about how he was going to catch poor Vernon Beasley.
“Kinda sucks for him,” Marko commented as they sat near a bonfire.
Vera was sitting in the sand, between Dwayne’s legs, her back against his chest. David was sitting nearby, Paul and Marko on his other side. The fire had been lit by some drunk partygoers and then subsequently abandoned when they moved on, and for once, Vera couldn’t smell any burning flesh in it. Just normal, crackly firewood, for a normal, crackly bonfire. It was nice, in a way, not having to worry about disposing of any bodies, and she wondered if the boys ever just enjoyed real, honest to God bonfires. She had been around long enough to see that they loved to party, but her arrival to Santa Carla had made everything absolutely explode for their little group. Maybe now that things were calming down, she would get the chance to see them actually behaving like a bunch of rowdy boys who did more than hunt humans for fun.
“For who?” Paul asked, dragging her back away from her thoughts.
“Good ol’ Vernon.” Marko said. “Guy’s just doing his job. Too bad he has to deal with us.”
Vera gave Marko a sidelong glance and saw that his expression didn’t entirely match his words. He was grinning, his normally angelic face absolutely demonic. The glow of the fire was casting shadows across his features that accentuated and deepened them, and for a moment, she thought she could see his irises beginning to go yellow. He wasn’t just comfortable with the thought of tearing the security guard to shreds…he was counting on it.
“Man, he’s been a bummer for ages.” Paul said as he stretched out on his back. “Always takin’ our weed, telling us to get off the boardwalk…it’ll be way more fun when he’s gone.”
“I still can’t believe you instigated all that, David.” Vera scoffed. “You couldn’t even let me have ten minutes on the carousel before you went and picked a fight…”
“I’ll make it up to you, sweetheart.” He leaned over and took her hand, raising it to his lips. “Promise.”
“Besides, Surf Nazis all suck ass.” Marko wrinkled his nose. “You heard what that guy said to Dwayne.”
“No, I didn’t, Marko,” Vera rolled her eyes. “I was busy enjoying my very short time on the very nice carousel.”
“Lucky.” Paul mumbled.
She glared at him.
“They don’t like any of us, but they’ve got a soft spot for me.” Dwayne grumbled sarcastically.
Vera tilted her head to look up at him. When she saw how annoyed he looked, her expression softened. “What did they say?”
“Doesn’t matter.” He growled, staring at the fire.
She frowned, suddenly feeling a twinge of guilt. She knew the guys had beef with the Surf Nazis—and really, who wouldn’t, with a name like that—but it seemed she needed to step back and observe the way they actually interacted with them. How was she supposed to take care of her boys if she didn’t even know what was going on in their world?
“They’re just assholes.” Paul said, sitting up and leaning his elbow on his knee. “I wish we could just fuckin’ get rid of them all…”
“As if.” Marko snorted. “Max would kill us if we went on a murder spree.”
“I know.” Paul sighed. “It’d teach ‘em a lesson, though.”
“How? There wouldn’t be anyone left to learn!”
“Someone probably would.”
“Definitely not you after Max rips your head off.”
“Max doesn’t decide who we kill,” David glared at the two of them. “I do. Don’t fuckin’ forget that.”
“Yeah, yeah.” Paul grumbled.
Vera glanced at David. “Max is still in charge…isn’t he?”
He wrinkled his nose. “Technicalities.”
“…right. Of course.” She said suspiciously. “You’re power hungry, sweetheart.”
“I am not!” He snapped.
“Does Max know he’s only in charge because of a technicality?” She asked, an amused lilt to her voice. “Since there isn’t possibly any other reason that he might be…”
David made a disgusted sound and climbed to his feet, clearly done with the conversation. “Come on. It’s time we paid our favorite security guard a visit.”
Paul and Marko jumped up and followed behind him eagerly, Dwayne slipping an arm around Vera to help her to her feet. The beach was empty, all the partygoers finally finished with their festivities for the night, leaving Santa Carla eerily quiet as David led the way up the stairs. The blinking neon signs and store lights were all turned off, the carnival stalls were all closed, and besides the occasional drunk or strung out hippie hanging around in the corners, there was nobody in sight. It was calm, but not the good kind of calm–the kind where the air seemed heavy and altogether too still, where you could strain your ears for a single sound and not hear anything and eventually drive yourself mad waiting for something to happen. It was the kind of calm that the vampires loved, because for them, it was only the calm before the storm of hunting, and they were already tracking their prey.
David stayed in the lead, like always, walking briskly as he followed Vernon’s scent. Vera had to practically run to keep up with him, trotting along on his heels with the rest of the boys behind her. They were excited, all of them, ready to finally get their revenge and do away with the security guard who always seemed to ruin their fun. Was it fair to poor Vernon, who was only doing his job, trying to keep the peace in a wild and chaotic seaside town where anything could happen? No. But was life fair?
Absolutely not.
The group paused near the end of the boardwalk, looking out towards the massive, dark parking lot in anticipation. They were all humming with energy, an extra little pep in their step as they got closer and closer to finally getting a snack. Vera just stood back and watched in fascination at the way they were all behaving—it wasn’t anything she hadn’t seen from them before, but it was definitely heightened, and she could only guess that it was because this hunt was personal.
“Ready, boys?” David asked, grinning wildly to himself as his eyes grew yellow.
“Fuck yeah,” Paul growled while Marko gnawed at his thumb in an attempt to hold himself back.
David turned his attention to Vera. “You coming along?”
“I think I’d rather watch you at work,” she smirked. “I’ve never seen you this worked up before a hunt.”
He grinned, lips pulled back to reveal his fangs. “Suit yourself. More for me then.”
His voice was rough and harsh, matching his monstrous appearance. The others were much the same, their eyes yellow, their fangs sharp—and as David led them into the sky, all Vera could do was lean against a wall and watch.
Vernon was alone, making his way through the empty lot towards a car parked in the middle of it. The poor guy had no idea what was coming—after all, how could he? To him, the Lost Boys were a pesky gang that just made his shifts harder, who fought with the others and caused problems for Santa Carla. How could he have any clue what he was dealing with? In his worst case scenario, maybe he’d get jumped on his way back to the car…but Vera was pretty positive he’d been through that sort of thing before. As a security guard on the boardwalk, there was no way he hadn’t dealt with it.
He’d never dealt with real monsters, though.
She knew that David and the others would be eerily silent as they stalked Vernon from above, and just as she thought, she could hardly hear them. Being a supernatural entity had its perks—their clothing barely even rustled as they looped around overhead, and it wasn’t until David finally got sick of waiting that they made any noise.
It was then that Vernon finally noticed something was very, very wrong. When he turned around, his eyes were wide, his face stricken with horror as he saw David diving towards him with his arms outstretched and his fangs bared. The others were right behind him, laughing and snarling like maniacs as they chased their prey to his car, their thoughts erratic and wild in Vera’s head as she looked on.
They let him grab the handle and she could hear Vernon’s heart pounding. His blood was rushing through his veins as he desperately tried to open the door, as if his car could possibly protect him from them. As if anything could.
She had to give him points for trying, though.
If there was one thing humans were good at, she had found, it was surviving…or at least, trying to. Vernon was like a scared animal, behaving purely on instinct, adrenaline rushing through his body as he tugged and tugged and tugged at that handle.
She could smell his fear in the air and it made her nose twitch.
David finally grabbed him, sinking his claws into the flesh beneath Vernon’s uniform as he pulled. He didn’t care if he separated the man’s body from his arms. He just wanted to eat. His head was filled with one singular urge to sink his teeth into his meal, his usual cool, rational exterior completely stripped away to reveal a focused, starving, dangerous predator.
Vernon had a death grip on the handle, and as David hauled him off his feet, the entire door tore off the car.
Vera was impressed.
A few seconds later, when David tore into Vernon’s throat, the door clattered to the pavement, and the boys went absolutely ballistic.
They tore poor Vernon to shreds.
Vera had to crane her neck to look up at them, and what she saw would have turned her stomach…if she wasn’t exactly like them. It was total carnage, blood and viscera pouring down and splattering all over the pavement. If Vernon was still alive, he had definitely passed out, and he wasn’t going to last much longer at the rate the boys were going. This was more than just feeding time—this was a frenzy, a mindless, gory attack on a man they all hated.
Vera found that she was getting antsy as she watched, but by the time she thought about finally going up to join them, Marko was hauling the bloodless, mangled body off to feed to the sharks, and the other three were coming to join her. Paul was absolutely caked in blood, his wild mane of hair stained red as he landed. He stumbled when his boots touched the ground, his entire body vibrating with excitement, nostrils flared and teeth bared as he set his sights on her next.
He barely managed to step forward before Dwayne was landing in front of him, his eyes dark, his bare chest heaving with every ragged breath as if he couldn’t gulp down enough air. There was blood smeared across his skin, and as he licked some off of his lips, he gave Paul a warning growl before stalking forward.
Vera thought that he would be the one to reach her first, but suddenly, there was David. He appeared in front of her, close enough that she could feel his breath on her lips as she looked at him. His eyes were yellow, the crimson on his face suddenly seeming so much brighter in contrast to his platinum hair. The other two hissed behind him as he took her chin in his hand, and suddenly, his lips were crashing against hers like bloody waves on the shore, and she was desperately trying to lick up every last drop.
He seized her thigh and pulled her leg up to his waist, his body pressing against hers insistently as her back hit the fence. He was all hands and claws and teeth, leaving behind harsh red marks wherever he made contact with her skin.
She was so focused on him and blood all over him that Vera didn’t notice Paul and Dwayne creeping up until they were at her sides, eagerly shoving their way in, avoiding David’s jaws whenever he took a break to snap in their faces. They were more than quick enough to lean back in time, and they were bold enough that they didn’t care about his possessiveness in the slightest. Dwayne seized her lips in his only to lose her to Paul again while David sucked at her throat, and Vera was far too happy to even begin caring about whose hands were going where.
By the time Marko returned, they were little more than a blur of fangs and limbs, and he was more than happy to dive right into the middle of it at all. Was this what heaven was like? He supposed he’d never get to find out, but he didn’t need to. He was right where he wanted to be, and so was Vera, and so was everyone else. They were together. They were happy.
By the time they had all come down from their highs, dawn was approaching, and they were tired enough to call it a night and head back home. Vera rode on the back of David’s bike, her arms snug around his waist as she laid her head on his back. The trip felt peaceful, even though they were tearing across uneven ground, the skies quiet and safe now that the vampires had fed.
When she walked into the main lobby of the sunken hotel, Vera was greeted by Laddie, already dressed for bed in secondhand pajamas Star had no doubt found for him on the boardwalk. He had a stuffed rabbit in his arms and a big, innocent smile on his face, and for a moment, she wondered if he had any idea what sort of brutality they were all capable of.
“You were out so late!” He exclaimed as she wrapped him up in a tired hug.
“I know,” she sighed.
“Hey, little man.” Paul said as he walked past, ruffling Laddie’s hair.
“Where were you?” The boy asked, watching him.
“Busy,” Marko gave him a tired pat on the shoulder before following Paul.
“Out grabbing a snack,” Vera smiled, bringing his attention back to her. “Did you eat tonight?”
Laddie nodded. “We had tacos. I wanted a funnel cake but Star said it wasn’t good for me.”
“She’s right…but we’ll get you one tomorrow,” Vera said, giving him a sneaky grin and nudging his shoulder.
“I didn’t give Star any cash.” David said coldly from behind her. “How’d you buy food?”
Vera turned to glare at him, but Laddie piped up before she could say anything. “She got a guy to buy us dinner.”
“A guy, huh?” He pulled a cigarette out of his jacket.
“David, she’s allowed to talk to boys.” Vera rolled her eyes.
“Is she?” He pulled out a lighter and flicked it open, bringing the flame up to his cigarette.
Vera gave him a look.
“Laddie, are you ready for bed?” She asked, looking down at him.
“But I don’t wanna—“
“I’ll handle this,” Dwayne said, suddenly swiping Laddie up in one arm as he walked by. “You brush your teeth?”
“Yes! But—“
“Show me.”
“I did!”
“I don’t believe you.”
“Duh-wayne—“
Vera watched as Laddie was carried off towards a smaller cavern that often flooded with water and served as a makeshift washroom, Dwayne cutting him off whenever he tried to get out of brushing his teeth. Once they were out of sight, she turned her attention back towards a smug-looking David, whose expression made her want to slap it right off his face.
“What’s your deal?” She growled. “Laddie coulda gone hungry tonight and all you care about is Star talking to guys?”
“He woulda been fine,” he rolled his eyes, starting off towards the roost. “Kid’s a halfblood. Or did you forget, Princess?”
“Can we go back to the part of the night where you were sucking my face off?” Vera asked as she followed.
“Why? Not satisfied yet?” He smirked back at her. “Legs were shakin’ pretty hard. I coulda swore you were all taken care of.”
“Because you weren’t talking,” she growled.
He barked a laugh. “Ouch.”
“Tell me something useful or I’m not sleeping next to you today.”
He scowled, and she knew she had won. “I don’t like it when she talks to humans, because I know she won’t feed. And sure, I can be…territorial. I don’t want some sleazebag gettin’ too close to us. But…guys like her. And she’s gonna learn to use that.”
“Shut up and come to bed,” Paul called from the ceiling as they entered the cave.
“Shut up, Paul.” David yelled half heartedly before turning back to Vera. “Star’s gotta catch her first meal, Sweetheart. And one of these nights, I’m gonna find the perfect guy for her.”
-0-
As luck would have it, just several days later, that perfect guy was stuck in a car with his mom, his younger brother, and a husky named Nanook, making the long drive from Phoenix, Arizona to Santa Carla, California. His mother had grown up there, but he and Sam hadn’t visited since they were just kids, and moving in with a grandfather they barely knew right on the heels of a shitty divorce wasn’t how they wanted to spend their summer.
Nonetheless, the skies were blue and cloudless, the sun bright and warm. Michael didn’t know much about Santa Carla, but that was exactly his problem—he didn’t know anything about the town, and he didn’t know anybody in it. His mom had assured him that it was a fun place, with a boardwalk and an amusement park and a population of colorful people. She seemed happy to be moving back, and was eager to find a job and spend the weekends teaching her boys to surf now that they had a local beach to enjoy.
“Keep going,” Sam mumbled as they flipped through radio stations.
“Hey, I like that song!” Lucy laughed.
The windows were down, the sea breeze ruffling their hair as they drove past a church. There wasn’t much in the way of traffic outside Santa Carla, and they had been making good time ever since leaving the motel that morning.
“Oh, wait, wait, wait!“ Lucy said as Sam reached for the knob again. “That’s from my era! Groovin, on a Sunday afternoon…”
Sam looked back at his older brother before they both agreed to “Keep going, keep going…”
“Okay, okay…” Lucy said, glancing down at the radio and changing the station again. When she looked back up, she saw the big WELCOME TO SANTA CARLA! billboard on the side of the road, and she smiled. “Hey, we’re almost there!”
The boys perked up, but then Sam’s face fell.
“What’s that…smell?” He asked.
“That’s the ocean air,” his mother said, taking a deep, satisfied breath.
“…smells like someone died.”
“Oh, honey, come on.” Lucy said. “Look, I know the last year hasn’t been easy, but I think you’re really gonna like living in Santa Carla.”
Michael was busy looking at the back of the sign as they drove away from it, though. It was covered in crude grafiti, tagged by what he could only assume were gangs. In the lower corner, in big, red letters, he saw the words murder capital of the world, and he wondered what the fuck that could possibly mean.

“He’s still following us. I can hear him.”
Star glanced back over her shoulder. “I know.”
“Don’t be so obvious about it!” Vera hissed.
“Why not?” the other girl laughed, looping their arms together as they weaved through the crowd. “I think he’s kinda cute.”
Cute? Ugh. Vera needed another look.
When she turned, the guy from the concert was still there, pushing past boardwalk patrons as he desperately tried to keep Star in his sights. He was…fine, she supposed, handsome in a Morrison sort of way. He was following them like a lost puppy, his eyes always focused on Star, even when he saw that Vera was staring.
She felt a twinge of annoyance at how persistent he was, and part of her wanted to get in his face and tell him to leave her pack alone and fuck off, but she shoved the urge away and tried to focus on how entertaining he was. Human boys were so desperate it was almost endearing.
Almost.
“What exactly do you plan to do once he catches up to us?” Vera asked.
Star paused. “I…don’t know. What would you do?”
Vera gave her a look. “I would eat him, which is what you should be considering.”
Star paled. “Oh, no, I don’t know…”
“Why not?”
“It’s just…” she bit her lip anxiously. “Sorta soon…”
“Star.” Vera pulled her to a stop. “It’s the 1980s. You can eat a boy on the first date if you want to. That’s what modern feminism is all about.”
“…I don’t really think that’s what that—“
“Hey,” They both turned to see that the boy had caught up with them and was looking at Star hopefully, his eyes full of absolute longing. Vera resisted the urge to scoff and wrinkle her nose.
Star cleared her throat and smiled, pulling Laddie closer so that he couldn’t get swept away in the crowd. “Are you following us?”
The guy offered a lopsided grin that made Vera think he was trying too hard to look cool. “Yeah. I am.”
“Did you wanna talk to us?” Star asked, her smile widening.
“Yeah.” the guy’s confidence seemed to be growing, like he thought he had a good chance now. “I do.”
“Well…talk,” Star laughed quietly.
And then it became clear that this boy had absolutely no game plan, because he simply replied with a smooth “How are you?” That had Vera wanting to bring him back to the gang just so that they could teach him how to hit on girls properly.
Star gave him a funny look, but before she could respond, a blond boy was suddenly approaching her would-be suitor. Vera could see the similarities in their faces, especially their eyes, and even though the boardwalk was busy and there were a million scents in the air, she felt confident in her guess that they were related to each other. The blond was shorter and looked a few years younger, dressed in a shirt sporting a very loud pattern that suggested he was some kind of designer mall rat who kept up with all the latest trends.
The first guy–his older brother, probably?--glanced at him and then chose to ignore him, tensing to step forward. Yeah, he definitely gave off older brother vibes. He was totally ready to ignore his younger sibling in favor of talking to a girl, but before he could actually move, the blond held out a hand to stop him.
“Mom’s here,” he said.
The first one made a dismissive sound, trying to get him out of the way so he could continue what he was doing, but if he actually spoke, Vera wasn’t listening. She was too busy looking at the comic in the blond boy’s hand, its familiar glossy blue cover and Vampires Everywhere! Suddenly seeming a lot less innocent and entertaining than it had when the Frog brothers handed her a copy.
So those two really were preaching about bloodsuckers to everybody who came into their shop, huh? Maybe she needed to rethink her whole ‘no killing kids’ policy.
She glanced down and saw that Laddie was also staring at the comic, his head tilted slightly. Vera knew that he knew what the boys were–and what he almost was–but she didn’t need him around some human who had the potential to find out, too. Even though she was sure the Frog brothers came off as weirdo kids who watched too many scary movies, she didn’t need Laddie getting exposed to their vampire hunter rhetoric and ending up scarred for the rest of his un-life.
“Come on,” she nudged Star.
She took the hint, grabbing Laddie’s hand and smiling over her shoulder at the boys. “Nice talking with you.”
“Wait–”
But they were already disappearing into the crowd, leaving Michael behind to do nothing but stare.
He turned towards his brother with a glare. “Sammy, come on.”
“What?” Sam asked, following as Michael took off again.
“She was right here!” Michael said as he pushed past boardwalk patrons. “You scared her off!”
“What? Me? No way!” Sam protested. “What makes you think she’s even that interested in you? She ran!”
Michael turned to fix him with another glare. “You probably made it awkward.”
“Mike, come on. Mom is waiting with the car–”
“I just wanna talk to her again. Maybe get her number or something, at least.”
“You’re really gonna chase this girl all over the boardwalk, aren’t you?” Sam asked as he struggled to keep up. “I can’t believe this. I wanna go shopping, but I’m a good kid, and I told Mom I was gonna find you and bring you straight back to the car–”
“Sam?”
“Yes, Michael?”
“Shut up.”
“He really is kinda cute,” Star laughed as she and Vera each held one of Laddie’s hands.
Vera huffed. “I guess in a dumb puppy dog kinda way…”
“Why’d you say that like it’s a bad thing? Isn’t that just Paul?”
Vera paused, thought about it, and then barked a laugh. “You’ve got a point, actually. I guess he is kinda cute.”
“More than kinda!”
“Yeah, well…I bet you could have some fun with him. Just don’t get attached, y’know?”
Star sighed. “Yeah. I know.”
“Hey, why the long face?” Vera asked as they slipped through the crowd towards an ice cream cart. “This is fun! We’re having fun. Boys are stupid and they’re entertaining.”
“I know, it’s just…” Star chewed on her lip. “It’s nothing. He’s probably gone, anyways. Come on, Laddie. What flavor do you want?”
“Chocolate!” The little boy said excitedly, stepping up to the cart eagerly.
“You think he gave up?” Vera asked, craning her neck to look for the human.
“Do you see him?” Star asked, handing Laddie some money to pay the vendor.
It was Vera’s turn to sigh. “No. I kinda hoped he was more persistent than that.”
“Maybe you scared him off,” Laddie said, grabbing his ice cream cone and reaching for her hand.
“What?” She gasped dramatically as she took his. “Me? Scary?”
“Yeah, no way,” Star mumbled sarcastically.
“You are a little bit,” Laddie nodded. “You’re even scarier than David sometimes. And that guy hasn’t even met David!“
“If I’m so scary, why aren’t you scared? Huh?”
“Because Laddie is super brave and tough. Right?” Star smiled, nudging his shoulder.
“Uh huh!” He said through a mouthful of ice cream. “And because I have the meanest big brothers on the planet. They always beat up anybody who messes with me.”
“Not that anybody should be messing with you in the first place,” Vera said, giving Star a very pointed look as she remembered what the boys had said about Laddie being left on his own.
“Don’t look at me like that!” Star exclaimed. “Surf Nazis—“
“Are the worst. I know.” Vera growled. “And that’s why the guys get so mad when Laddie’s on his own.”
“I know. I messed up a couple times.” Star said, looking at the ground. “David made sure I know. It won’t happen again.”
“Well…good,” Vera nodded. Honestly, she wasn’t really sure how to handle the whole friendship thing with Star still. She couldn’t just growl and snap at her when she was pissed, could she? That sort of thing worked on the boys, but that was only because they needed a more direct approach. And also because Max made sure that they were raised with a firm hand, and they didn’t know how to respond to anything less.
Star wasn’t like them, though. She had her issues, sure, but Vera had the feeling she couldn’t treat her the same as she did the guys. So…how did she go about being nice while still making sure Star understood things? Maybe…just…go with the flow, and see what happened? Vera wasn’t used to that. She was used to having at least some semblance of a handle on things.
But maybe winging it was the move.
“So…what else do you like to do?” She asked as they walked.
Star perked up a bit and looked at her. “Well, I like swap meets, and Laddie and I spend a lot of time trying to win prizes on games…and I go to concerts on the beach, a-and sometimes we go shopping…”
“Okay, so…maybe we can do some more of that soon?” She suggested.
Star’s eyes lit up. “Really? You want to?”
“Well…yeah. Sure.” Vera nodded. “Why not?”
“I’m glad we’re on good terms now,” Star smiled, taking her arm. “It’s been a long time since I’ve had a friend.”
“…Me too, honestly,” Vera frowned. “It’s…nice. I think.”
“So we can be friends?”
Vera paused, looking at her for a moment. Could they? Star was looking at her hopefully, her eyes big and earnest. Was she just hoping that friendship with Vera could protect her from David’s wrath? It probably could, after all; he would have to be in an especially foul mood to try to off one of Vera’s friends, and she didn’t think he was stupid enough to try now. Besides that, though…did Star honestly want to be her friend?
And did Vera want to be hers?
…shit.
She kinda did.
“Yeah,” she finally said. “I think we can.”
Star gave her a wide smile, and as the two ran down the boardwalk with Laddie in tow, Michael Emerson was just about nearing his wit’s end trying to follow them.
Why did girls have to make it so hard?
“Mike, come on,” Sam said. “Give it up, I don’t think—“
“I just wanna get her number or something.” Michael glanced back at his brother.
“Look, just because you miss Laurie—“
“Why don’t you go back to the comic book store?”
“No way!” Sam protested. “You know how hard it was to find you in the first place? You’ll totally run off if I leave you alone! And then I’m in trouble, and—“
“Fine. Just can it, okay?” Michael looked ahead towards the brunette he had been so focused on. “I gotta really impress her.”
“Whatever you say,” Sam rolled his eyes. “The scary one isn’t gonna let you even get close.”
“What? Come on,” Michael scoffed. “Get real, Sam. They’re just girls. It’s not that complicated.”
Except, as he reached the edge of the crowd and he could finally breathe again, he saw that they weren’t just girls—they were girls who hung out with guys.
A gang of guys, to be exact.
There were four of them, Michael noticed, sitting around custom motorcycles that made his look like it belonged to a little kid. And speaking of kids, the boy he had seen with the girls was running up to the gang, totally squashing any hopes Michael had that maybe they had just been passing by and didn’t really know them.
Well, just because they knew each other didn’t mean that the hot brunette was off limits, right? Michael wasn’t above joining a mysterious biker gang for a girl. He’d do it if he had to. Was that bad? Probably, but he didn’t know anybody in town besides his brother and mom, and yeah, Sam was right—he did miss Laurie, the girl he’d gone on a few dates with back in Phoenix, and he was pretty desperate to get a girlfriend.
But shit…the guys this one hung out with looked like bad news. Two were sitting on the fence while the other two sat on their bikes, all looking like they regularly got themselves into trouble. They wore clothes that were either dark and intimidating, or bright and loud and threatening, and if the rest of Santa Carla was anything to go off of, these guys probably got up to all sorts of illegal shit that Michael had no business getting himself involved with.
But the hot girl was there, so he was there.
“Hey, chickadee,” Paul greeted Vera with a whistle.
“Hey, handsome,” she replied as she and Star walked up.
The boys were a sight for sore eyes, even though David looked extra contemplative as he sat on his bike and smoked. Whatever they had talked to Max about, they were keeping to themselves for the moment, especially David. He didn’t even look surprised to see Star and Vera walking arm in arm, he just gave them a once over to make sure they were in one piece and left it at that.
Laddie ran straight to Dwayne, who jumped down off the fence to examine the smears of ice cream on the boy’s face. He tried to squirm away as Dwayne licked his thumb to clean it off, looking very much like a cat trying to bathe its kitten, and Vera was expecting at least some sort of snappy remark about how she should have paid more attention to him and done it herself. None came, though, because as Dwayne was busy with that, David was glaring past Star towards someone in the crowd.
“Is that the guy?” Marko asked, slipping his arms around Vera’s waist protectively and looking over her shoulder towards the human.
“Yep.” She said without glancing back, running her fingers through his golden curls.
“Damn, he’s determined,” Paul commented as he jumped down.
Let’s go. David growled in their heads.
He flicked his cigarette away, reaching for Star’s hand as she approached him. He noticed that she didn’t seem as put out as usual, holding onto his shoulder as she climbed on behind him and wrapping her arms around his waist in a way she hadn’t in weeks, if not months.
When he glanced back at her, he saw that she was distracted by the brown haired boy who still stood there staring at them, and a smirk crept onto David’s face. Oh yeah. This was definitely the one. The guy looked totally hopeless and totally clueless, standing there with a forlorn expression, absolutely bummed to see Star on the back of someone else’s bike.
“C’mon. She stiffed ya.” The blonde boy next to him said with a laugh.
And David’s smirk only widened.
Yeah. Star wasn’t his in the way that Vera was, but she was still his. He wanted this goofy looking human to understand that.
“Babe,” Paul actually growled, tugging Vera with him towards his bike. “Let’s get outta here.”
She complied and he pulled her on behind him, glaring at the brunette stranger to make sure he wasn’t looking at her. He kicked his bike into gear, revving it for extra measure, Marko doing the same thing next to him.
“Easy,” Vera murmured, running her hands up his sides. “He’s just after Star.”
Instead of a verbal reply, she received a sloppy kiss as Paul tilted his head back. She could feel the possessiveness rolling off of him in waves, something that she was much more used to from David. Paul was the fun one, the one who was always down to try anything at least once…but apparently, a dude following her around all night crossed the line for him. That was probably a good thing, in all honesty.
Let’s go. David growled again.
And so Paul took the lead, tearing down the steps to the beach with Marko close behind. Star had a tight grip on David as he followed, her cheek resting against his jacket as she looked back at the cute new boy. She didn’t know if she wanted to kiss him or bite him, but either way, she wanted to see him again.
And he wanted to see her, too.
Michael really was bummed to see the girl of his dreams riding away with some Billy Idol-looking biker. Maybe Sam was right, and she had totally stiffed him. That was probably her boyfriend, right? And the other girl was with one of the other guys, and they were some sort of dangerous Santa Carla gang who beat the shit out of people and left graffiti everywhere.
He should stay away from them, he told himself as he and Sam walked back to the car. They were bad news, the kinda guys he really shouldn’t piss off or even associate with. But that girl…he couldn’t stop thinking about the way she smiled at him as she climbed on the back of that bike. It made him feel a little hopeful, knowing that she had been looking at him. If she really was dating that blonde guy, wouldn’t she have kissed him or something? Maybe Michael had a chance to get to know her, after all.

Back at the cave, Star was busy being interrogated.
“Who is he?” David demanded.
“I don’t know,” she mumbled, looking away. “I didn’t get his name.”
“Well why not?”
“Because I was interrupted!” She snapped, glancing back at him. “Why does it matter, anyways? You’re just going to kill him—“
“You are going to kill him,” David corrected. “Not me.”
“Big difference,” Star said sarcastically.
“It is a big difference,” he growled, looming over her. “Because you are going to kill him, and you are finally gonna join the rest of us.”
Star shrank back slightly and bit her lip to stop its trembling.
Vera looked on from the couch, where she was sitting with Marko’s head in her lap. Paul was playing on the fountain with Laddie, Dwayne was relaxing with a joint, and David…well, David was being himself. He was absolutely delighted at the prospect of Star finally chomping on someone, and that delight was turning into something a little bit nastier as he sneered and hissed at her. As he laughed at Star’s discomfort, Vera scoffed, pulling his attention away from his prey for a moment.
“Somethin’ the matter, Sweetheart?” he drawled.
“I think she gets the point, darling,” she said as she ran her fingers through Marko’s hair. “Give it a rest.”
David’s lip twitched with the beginnings of a snarl. “She’s been avoiding the point for a long time now. She needs it drilled into that pretty little head of hers.”
“You’re such a guy sometimes, David.” Vera rolled her eyes.
“And what exactly is that supposed to mean?” he bristled.
“Maybe you should get more in touch with your sensitive side,” Marko barked a laugh.
“Don’t you start,” David snapped at him before turning back to Star. “You’re gonna lure that guy in, and you’re gonna kill him. End of story. Got it?”
Star nodded quickly, backing up a few steps. “Y-yes. Got it.”
“Good.” he huffed. “Vera. Come with me.”
Vera looked at him in confusion. “Where?”
“Just come on.” he turned, making his way back to the cave entrance without so much as a glance back at her.
She looked down at Marko to see that he was just as confused as she was. David wasn’t revealing much with his thoughts, leaving her no choice but to slip away from the couch and go after him, even if for no other reason than to sate her own curiosity. She found him at the top of the cliff, already sitting on his bike as he waited for her to catch up, a cigarette in his mouth and a distant look in his eyes.
“What’s your deal tonight?” Vera asked as she approached.
He exhaled a puff of smoke and looked at her. “I wanna go talk to Max.”
“Why?”
“Because I wanna know what the deal is with the woman he found tonight.”
Vera faltered for a second before recollecting herself. “So you saw someone?”
“Yeah.” he tossed his head, beckoning her forward. “C’mon. I’ll tell you on the way.”
She reached for his face before climbing on behind him, planting a kiss on his cheek. “Alright.”
He didn’t tell her on the way. Not really. The ride was spent mostly in silence, Vera enjoying the alone time with David even though he was in a weird mood. He was tense, but also buzzing with energy…though not necessarily in a positive way. He felt a little manic, like his mood, whatever it was, was just elevated, and he needed the roar of his bike and the smell of blood.
He had the former. Maybe he would get the latter sometime soon.
“There was a woman at the video store.” He finally said as they reached the road leading to Max’s house. “And Max was…acting like he was in love with her already.”
“Do you think she could be his special person?” Vera asked.
“I don’t know.”
“What was she like?”
He thought for a moment, mulling it over. “She was nice. She was in the store because she needed a job. Max hired her on the spot, of course, and he wouldn’t tell me anything. Just kicked us out.”
“So…what are you gonna ask him?”
“I wanna know who she is and what he intends to do with her.” He growled. “If he wants to bring her in, I want to find out if I actually like her first.”
“David…I don’t think you have much say in that, do you? That’s kind of Max’s choice…”
“Max doesn’t get to decide who joins us,” David sneered.
“Doesn’t he?” Vera asked. “He’s in charge. What are you so afraid of?”
“I’m not afraid of anything,” he snapped. “I just…can’t have Max shacking up with someone I don’t like.”
“With someone you don’t think is good enough,” Vera corrected. “That’s it, isn’t it?”
“Guess so.” He grunted.
She was quiet for a moment, cheek resting on his back. When she spoke again, her voice was quiet. “You really are a good leader, you know.”
David glanced back at her. “Think so?”
“Yeah.” She nodded. “You care about the boys. You even care about Star.”
“I do not,” he scoffed.
“But you do. You won’t let her feed on just anyone. You’re just as possessive of her as you are with the rest of us. I don’t think you would have killed her even if I hadn’t insisted that you give her a chance.”
“I would have.”
“No, I don’t think so.” She shook her head. “I’m getting to know you better, and I can see that you want everyone to be taken care of. You’re the leader of the Lost Boys.”
They rode in silence for a few minutes before he spoke again. “Yeah. Guess I am.”
He hit the brakes as the familiar shape of Max’s house came into sight. His car was there, which meant that unless he was hunting, Max was there, too. As Vera stepped off the bike, she heard the pounding of paws and the barking of a hellhound, Thorn popping up on the other side of the gate to give David a piece of his mind.
“Yeah, yeah,” David hissed at him, keeping his distance. “Go tell your master that I’m here.”
Thorn just growled, not budging an inch.
“Why don’t you tell Max we’re here?” Vera asked David as she passed him. “Hi, Thorn. How’s my big handsome boy? Huh?”
“That’s the same voice you use on Paul.” David snorted.
“Yeah, well, it works on him,” she said, reaching down to pet Thorn’s ears.
The dog quieted down, whining and licking her hands. Just a few moments later, she saw the front door open, revealing Max. He was still wearing one of his weird, trendy dad outfits, but he looked happier than she had ever seen him, an easy smile plastered across his face as he saw Vera and David at the end of the walkway.
“Ah, hello, kids.” He greeted. “What brings you here this time of night? Shouldn’t you be causing untold mayhem out on the boardwalk?”
“Need to talk to you, Max,” David said gruffly.
“I imagined you might. Come in, I suppose.”
David appeared at Vera’s side and reached down, unlatching the gate and then leading the way past Thorn. He stopped halfway down the walk, standing with his hands at his sides and looking like he didn’t entirely know what to do.
“Who was she?” He asked bluntly.
Max’s smile softened. “Her name is Lucy.”
“What are you going to do with her?”
“Won’t you come inside and sit down, David? We can talk better—“
“No.” He interrupted. “Tell me now.”
Max sighed, putting his hands in his pockets. “Well…I hope to make her mine. My bride, if you will, although thanks to Dracula I suppose that’s a bit cliche, isn’t it?”
“Is that all, Max?” David sneered.
“You boys need a good mother. I believe Lucy will fit that role perfectly.”
Vera felt David stiffen at her side, and when she looked up, she saw that his eyes had widened slightly.
“What?” He asked in disbelief.
“Don’t you think she’ll do a fine job?” Max asked. “She’s kind, she’s intelligent, she’s a mother…”
“She is?” David asked coldly.
“She is.” Max nodded. “She mentioned tonight that she’s recently divorced with two sons. That’s why she needed a job so badly.”
“Two sons?” David sounded disgusted. “Don’t tell me you’re trying to give me new stepbrothers, old man.”
“And what if I am?” Max raised an eyebrow.
“I’ll kill them.”
“I’m sure you will, David.”
“I will!” He snapped, sounding a bit like a petulant child. “The boys and I don’t need a mother. We’re fine just like this.”
“Your attitude is telling me you are in desperate need of a good mother.” Max said bitterly. “You should be thanking me. After all…how long has it been since you’ve had a mother, David?”
His nostrils flared angrily, and Vera could hear his teeth clicking together as he squared his jaw.
“I don’t need a new mother.” He hissed, his voice absolutely scathing.
“You do, David. You forget that you’re my son.”
“I’m not your son.”
“You are.” Max growled. “Whether you like it or not. And Lucy will be your new mother, whether you like it or not. So I suggest you get used to the concept, because I have no intention of letting her slip past me now that I’ve set my sights on her. You of all people can appreciate that, I’m sure.”
David snorted angrily. “You really think she’s the one?”
“I know she is.” Max said softly. “And I know that once you give her a chance, you’ll see that I’m right about all of this. We’ll finally be a proper family.”
Vera watched David’s throat bob as he swallowed. When he spoke again, his voice was quieter. He knew Max was right, and there was no arguing with him anymore.
“Fine. What do you want me to do?”
Max smiled. “I’m going to court her properly. In the meantime, perhaps it would do you some good to get to know her boys.”
“Yeah? What are their names?” David asked.
“Sam and Michael Emerson, I believe.” Max said. “I also believe you’ve already met them.”
-0-
Rather than go straight home, David took a detour to the beach.
He sat down in the sand, looking out at the only black waves as he turned a shell over in his fingers. He had been quiet ever since leaving Max’s, lost in thought as he drove, leaving Vera completely in the dark.
“Hey,” she sat down next to him, her shoulder brushing his.
“He wants to replace her.” He said quietly.
“Who?” Vera asked.
“My mother.” He looked down at the small shell in his hand. “He wants to give me a new one. I don’t want a new one. I want her.”
Vera felt her heart lurch as she heard the wavering in his voice.
“I haven’t had a mother in decades.” He continued. “She died when I was still a human.”
“What happened?” Vera asked.
She was walking on eggshells, waiting for him to either snap at her or clam up again. But he didn’t, for some reason. For some reason, he just kept staring out at the sea, a distant look in his eyes as he spoke.
“Tuberculosis.” He said. “They would call it a good death because it gave you time to get your affairs in order. But there’s nothing good about how it took her from me.”
Vera didn’t know what to say. How could she? She had managed to survive long enough as a human that she ended up not needing to worry about plagues and disease after being turned. She had grown used to watching scores of humans die because of them. Maybe it had desensitized her to it. By the time she was wandering the world again, she didn’t have anyone close to her that she needed to worry about, and she definitely didn’t have any human friends or relatives who were susceptible to those things. She just knew that it happened, and she knew that she was glad she didn’t have to worry about it.
But David did. Not for his own sake, but for the sake of someone he could never get back.
“She was young.” He said. “It shouldn’t have happened. I was fifteen and my father was nowhere to be found. It was all alone until I met Max. If it had happened just a few years later, I could have turned her and she’d still be here.”
“Nobody can replace her,” Vera said.
“No, they can’t. And they shouldn’t try.” He sighed. “I don’t want another mother, because I can never have another mother. Max doesn’t fucking understand that.”
“It seems to me like Max just wants a family. And…if this Lucy lady really is his mate, then we just have to…keep an open mind, I guess.”
David finally looked down at her. “We, huh? What’s this we about?”
“What do you mean?” She furrowed her brow.
“Unless you’ve got dead mommy issues, I don’t see why you have to deal with this, Sweetheart.” He shook his head. “Probably better if you don’t worry about it. It’s my shit to handle.”
“Why do you have to handle it by yourself?” She asked.
“Because I always have.” He shrugged. “Because…I’m in charge. Because it won’t change, and I’ve got other shit to worry about.”
“David…you’ve sat and listened to my burdens. So let me help you bear yours, too.”
He looked at her for a long moment, the two of them sitting in a silence that was broken only by the waves.
“Dunno what I did to deserve you.” He mumbled. “But I’m not gonna question it.”
“Hey, I feel the same way about you,” she laughed, resting her head on his shoulder. “And between the two of us…I could probably use a good mother figure, too.”
“They are nice,” he commented, dropping the shell and leaning back on his hands. “Guess none of us really had any parents left when Max found us. Or if they were alive, they didn’t give a shit. That’s how we ended up together.”
“Makes sense.”
“Lucy was…nice.” He looked back out at the ocean. “Outside the store, she stopped and helped a lost little kid. Laddie’s age. He was standing there, cryin’ for his mom…and she was the only one who stopped. Whole sea of people, and they all just stepped around him and kept going.”
“Would you have stopped to help?” Vera asked.
“I was keepin’ an eye on him. I wouldn’t’ve let anything happen.”
Vera smiled up at him. “You really are sweet, you know.”
“Don’t go around tellin’ everybody.” He rolled his eyes. “I’ve got a reputation to uphold.”
“It makes me love you a little bit more.”
He looked down at her in surprise. “Come again?”
If she had the extra blood, she would have been blushing. Instead, all she could do was avoid his gaze and look away shyly, already wondering what exactly had compelled her to say the L word out of nowhere like that. But she had to back it up now, didn’t she? She had dug her grave. Time to go lie in it.
“I love you,” she said, looking at the water. “I think.”
David smiled, pulling her up against him and kissing the top of her head. “I think I love you, too.”
Vera sighed in relief. “For a second there, I was worried.”
“Why?” David chuckled. “Worried you were gonna scare me off? I’m tougher than that, Princess.”
“Yeah, yeah. Whatever.” She grumbled. “Wanna go get a bite to eat? All this emotional turmoil has me starving.”
He grinned dangerously. “Let’s round up the boys. I’ve got the perfect couple in mind.”

Sex with her boys was always wild in some regard.
Vera had come to learn that much.
Her time in Santa Carla had taught her that they were all different, and her special, intimate nights with each of them were certainly unique…but they all had a few things in common, a few qualities that the four of them shared. They were all teeth and blood, even Dwayne, and they were all aggressive and possessive when they wanted to be, even when their only competition were other members of their own pack.
“D-David…” Vera moaned, her fingers gripping the sheets.
He hummed, his breath hot against her core as his tongue swept along the length of her lips. When he reached her clit, he sucked on it, earning a whine and then a squeal when he bit down.
“David!”
He pressed a kiss against it before trailing his lips towards her inner thigh, moving slowly, agonizingly slowly as she shivered and tried to tug at his hair to pull him back down.
“Patience, kitten.” He chuckled, nipping at her flesh. “Gotta savor the moment while I’ve got you to myself…”
Vera’s eyes flickered to the doorway, where she was met with the hungry, starving faces of three absolutely desperate men.
Marko was trembling, hugging himself with one arm while he chewed on his thumb. Paul was breathing heavily, bracing himself with a hand on the door frame. Dwayne was watching with his eyes glued to her, dark and full of want. They were all moments away from snapping, she could tell, and when David glanced up and saw that he had lost her attention, he bit her thigh.
“What’d I tell you?” He growled, swiping his tongue over the wound as she yelped in surprise. “Look at me.”
“Quit bein’ selfish, David,” Paul growled from the doorway.
“What’re you gonna do about it?” David asked as he pressed a kiss against Vera’s skin.
Paul just grumbled, leaning his head back in frustration as he tried to reach down and shamelessly adjust his hard on.
“You better not fucking touch yourself, Paul.” David said.
Paul let out a disgusted whine and put his hands behind his back, watching as Vera bucked her hips against David’s mouth. It wasn’t fair. Why did David get to have all the fun while he was stuck standing in the doorway with a hard on? Maybe he should fucking do something about it. Maybe he should barge his way in and shove David out of the way and dive right between Vera’s thighs.
“Don’t even fucking think about it,” David growled, glancing up at him. “Wait your fuckin’ turn.”
“You’re taking too long!” Marko hissed. “C’mon, let us in. We know how to make her happy…”
“And you think I don’t?” David chuckled, sinking a finger between Vera’s folds. He was rewarded with a loud moan, her fingers moving to tangle in his hair and claw at his shoulders as she writhed. “Sounds like she likes it…”
“M-more,” she gasped as he added another.
David leaned his head in and nipped at her clit, earning another moan. The air was heavy with the scent of her arousal, growing thicker as he worked his fingers in and out of her. Marko was shaking with the effort of holding himself back, gnawing at his thumb as he tried not to slip past Paul and pounce on their mate. His fangs were long, piercing his lower lip as it quivered, his eyes turning yellow as whatever control he was clinging to began eroding away. As he watched Vera’s back arch off of the bed, and saw the beads of blood dripping down her thigh from David’s bite, and he felt like he was only seconds away from totally losing it.
“That’s it,” David purred, coaxing an orgasm out of her. “Feels good, doesn’t it?”
“Y-yes!” She gasped, her thighs shaking as wetness pooled between her legs.
David smirked. He loved that he had the ability to completely unravel someone like her. Out on the streets, she was vicious and bloodthirsty, always on a pedestal above everyone else around her. Between the sheets, though, she was his, a body for him to play with, a willing participant in whatever little games he felt like winning that night. Not that she didn’t also get to win, of course; he would always make sure she came first. He was a selfish bastard, but he wasn’t a total asshole.
Besides…she was so delicious afterwards.
He pulled his fingers away, replacing them with his mouth. His tongue swept over her, lapping up every last drop of wetness as she slumped back against the mattress. She felt tired and peaceful, the stars in her vision fading away as she paused to come back down to earth. When he leaned back on his heels, David just looked down at her for a moment, appreciating the sight of her so blissed out.
But they weren’t done yet.
Not by a long shot.
He heard movement in the doorway and cocked his head towards it. Paul was bracing himself with a hand on the doorframe, claws digging into it as he glared at them with fierce yellow eyes. A guttural growl left his throat, and at the sound of it, Vera picked her head up. When she did, she saw that he was well on his way to totally vamping out, and Marko was close behind. She raised her arms, reaching for them, and Paul was on her in a flash, shoving David aside despite his sharp hiss.
And then, everything was a blur.
They were a flurry of teeth and lips, hands running over her flesh, squeezing at her tits and her ass whenever they could. They wanted to worship her. They wanted to taste her skin and lap up her blood as their fangs pierced her throat and her thighs. Dwayne settled in behind her, his lips on her neck as he pulled her back against his chest. Marko had one hand on her breast, kneading it as his mouth moved against hers in a deep, mind-melting kiss. Paul was on her other side, his teeth sinking into her chest as he greedily licked and sucked.
And David was still between her legs, appreciating her in the best way he knew how.
They all moved together somehow, and when one moved, another shifted to take his spot. Vera was hungry, her belly full of fire, and when she wound up on her hands and knees, she demanded that they do their goddamn jobs and please her.
And they did.
Dwayne tangled his hands in her hair, looking down at her with loving, hazy eyes as he fucked her throat. David held her hips as he thrusted his cock into her from behind, his fingers digging into her flesh and leaving bruises that faded just as quickly as they appeared. And when they were spent and done for the moment, Paul and Marko were quick to replace them, keeping Vera busy and keeping her happy.
And when they all had finally had enough, they collapsed in a pile, perfectly content to sleep there until nightfall.
-0-
“Paul, get off of me.”
The blond groaned and buried his face under Marko’s arm. “Five more minutes, David….”
“You have five more seconds before I kick your ass into next Wednesday.”
Paul let out a disgusted sound and slowly pushed himself up to sit on his knees, rubbing at his tired eyes. “Fine, I’m up.”
David let out a grunt and tucked his head into Vera’s neck, completely unwilling to fully rouse himself now that he was comfortable again. Paul rolled his eyes at the sight. Of course David was just being grumpy and not wanting to cuddle with anyone else…but why the hell was that his problem? The others didn’t have to deal with David. Marko and Dwayne were still sleeping soundly, and as Vera shifted and yawned, they seemed perfectly content to stay that way.
Typical.
“Good evening, sleepyhead,” Vera cooed, reaching out to place a hand on Paul’s thigh and give it a squeeze. She was laying on her back, hair splayed out over the pillow as she looked up at him, and even with that asshole David right there next to her, Paul thought she had to be just about the prettiest sight in the world.
He offered her an uncharacteristically gentle smile and took her hand in his, threading their fingers together. “Hey, baby. How’d you sleep?”
“Better than ever,” she smiled.
And that was the truth.
The longer she stayed with her boys, the better her sleep became. At first, she would wake up early, senses on high alert as she listened and waited for something, anything, to happen. She wasn’t used to being surrounded by other vampires while she snoozed, and being on her own had taught her that she needed to survive. Here, in Santa Carla, it was less about surviving, and more about actually living.
Metaphorically, of course.
After a late night of hot, heavy sex, Vera had passed out with the boys in a tangle of semi-clothed limbs. Too exhausted to fly up to their roost deeper in the cave, they had all opted to stay there in the hotel bed, even though it was a bit too small and they were a bit too cramped on it. But honestly, did that matter? They had slept in a puppy pile, not really caring whose head was on whose chest. All that mattered was that they were all there, they were all together and they were all safe and happy.
Paul seemed to like her answer and gave her a lazy nod, lips spread into that gorgeous smile that had a tendency to make her feel weak at the knees.
It was infectious, and she found herself returning it. “How about you?”
He gave a little shrug, and she appreciated how slow he was moving. For once, he wasn’t acting like an absolute tornado, he was just being. He was just Paul.
“I always sleep good when I’m next to you,” he admitted, his voice a little deeper with sleep. He was still groggy, his movements slower than when he was fully awake and ready to get himself into trouble. “Wanna slip away and go for a walk? Sun should be down.”
For a second she just looked at him in surprise. Really? A walk? She more expected him to be chomping at her neck and trying to get a quickie in before the others woke up, but…a walk on the beach sounded good, too. So she nodded and wiggled away from David as gently as possible, smoothing a thumb over his cheek when he grunted in protest. She grabbed some clothes and slipped into them while Paul found his pants, and then the two of them were off, hand in hand, Paul leading her through the main cavern and out into the night.
Vera was barefoot, and as they walked along right at the water’s edge, she felt her toes sinking into the sand. For a moment, she focused on it, taking advantage of Paul’s rare peacefulness to do some reflecting. She really hadn’t been in Santa Carla for very long, but it felt more like home than anywhere else in the world. This was it–she had finally found something worth sticking around for. She never would have guessed that a pack of wild boys would be the thing to domesticate her, but she wasn’t about to complain. They were just that, a proper pack, and she was one of them. She was one of the Lost Boys.
“Does that make me a Lost Girl?” she wondered out loud.
Paul let out a laugh and looked down at her. “The hell you talkin’ about, baby?”
She glanced up at him. “Me. Am I a Lost Girl? You’re the Lost Boys, so…”
He thought for a moment and then cracked a grin. “Yeah…yeah, I like that! That sounds badass…think we should make you a jacket? Marko’s real good with that kinda shit, y’know? Bet he could come up with something super hot….”
Vera laughed lightly, and the two fell into a comfortable silence for a few minutes before she spoke again. “I’m not used to this from you. This is nice.”
“What is?” he asked, tearing his eyes away from the dark horizon to look down at her.
“This. Just…enjoying a walk with you.”
“Oh.” his eyes wandered back towards the sea again. “Sometimes I do this when I wanna think. Tough to get away from the others, though.”
She kept her gaze focused on him, even when he wasn’t returning it. She was getting curious about this side of him, now. “What do you think about when you come out here alone?”
He shrugged. “Whatever. Life, I guess. What’d you talk with Star about last night?”
Vera hesitated for a moment as she recalled their conversation. How much should she tell him? He hadn’t seemed as angry as David had, but that didn’t mean he needed to know everything… but keeping information from any of the boys felt wrong, and Vera didn’t want to have to play any stupid games or have to watch her own back when it came to them. And besides, David was allowing Star to live, so there couldn’t be any harm in talking about it…right?
“I tried to get her to see that she can’t think like a human anymore,” she finally said.
“...Never really thought about it like that.” Paul half-frowned. “Guess it’s been a while, huh?”
Vera chuckled quietly. “Longer for me. I tried to tell her that humans are just food for us, and she has to stop acting like she’s still one of them…then we got into morality, and heaven and hell. Some deep shit.”
Paul snorted. “Who cares about goin’ to hell? Shit, your daddy practically owns it, so I think we’re in pretty good standing…”
“Shut up,” Vera laughed, nudging him with her shoulder and nearly pushing him into the water. “I told her I don’t worry about it…but I guess I do wonder sometimes. You know?”
“Yeah, I know.” He finally looked down at her again. “Doesn’t mean I let it get to me, though. That shit’s no fun. I mean, even when I was human all I wanted was to have fun, so I’m sure as shit not gonna go around bein’ miserable all night now.”
Vera gave him a curious look, studying his face. “What were you like, as a human?”
“Aw, you wanna hear about lil ol’ me?” He slung his arm over her shoulders as they meandered down the beach, and Vera noticed that he was beginning to act more like his usual self. “I was boppin’ around, you know…just doing my thing. Entertaining the ladies, gaining their favor, making some cash…”
“Paul…don’t tell me you were a gigolo.”
He laughed loudly, spinning her around to face him. “Sure was, baby! I loved those rich old ladies, and they loved me right back. It helps that I was a great dancer.”
“If I recall correctly, high society was a little more demanding back in your day, wasn’t it?” She grinned, leaning into him with a hand on his chest. “I’ve never once seen you have good manners. I just can’t imagine you being so prim and proper that those rich old ladies kept you around.”
“What can I say? I’m a charmer.” He flashed her an award winning, heart melting smile.
“Now that is definitely true,” she sighed, leaning her cheek against his chest as she looked up at him.
“Damn, baby…you really know how to make a guy fall in love with you, huh?” He asked.
And then he kissed her, and it was slow and sweet with a hint of that unbridled Paul energy behind it. His arms were tight around her, holding her close, and by the time they broke away from each other, she was sure he was digging his fingers in hard enough to leave a few brief bruises on her hips.
“Alright, lovebirds.” A voice said from behind her. “Ready to take this show on the road? I’m hungry.”
“You always have the worst timing, David,” Paul sighed.
Vera turned to see David and the others standing there, fully clothed, smirks on their faces. Paul hissed jealously as she left him to greet the rest of the boys, giving them each a good evening kiss before taking her boots from Marko.
“Thought you might want these,” he said. “Boardwalk isn’t exactly great on the toes.”
“Thank you, Angel,” She purred, pecking him on the cheek. “Where’s Star and Laddie?”
“Right here!”
She barely had time to turn around before Laddie was colliding with her midsection, rocketing into her like he was a missile. He wrapped his arms around her in a tight hug, and as she laughed and dropped her boots to return it, Vera caught sight of Star creeping up after him.
She was standing there with her shawl wrapped around herself, like usual, but she seemed…happier, maybe. A little more content, at least. Did that mean that their conversation had actually had a positive impact on her? Vera hoped so, because she really didn’t feel like having to do it again.
Laddie finally let go and she was free to pull her boots on, and then they were off on the bikes, roaring through the sand towards the boardwalk. Vera rode with Marko, Star sitting behind David where he could “keep an eye on her.” The other boys had laughed darkly when his thoughts betrayed his intentions to start looking for somebody to send Star after, and while Vera knew the girl wasn’t going to be very happy about it, part of her hoped that maybe she would end up enjoying the hunt. It was in her nature, after all. Maybe all she needed was a little push, and then she’d see that it wasn’t so bad after all…
“Come on, Laddie,” Star mumbled as they parked the bikes in their usual spot and hopped off.
Dwayne lifted Laddie off the back of his bike and set him down, ruffling his hair in the split second he had before the boy was bounding away to grab Star’s hand.
“Can we have some money?” She asked David.
He was pulling out a cigarette and paused to look at her. “Fresh outta cash, Star.”
She furrowed her brow angrily. “Are you serious?”
“I’m afraid so.”
“Then what are we supposed to do all night?”
“Go find something to get into.” He shrugged. “Go to one of those swap meets you like so much, I don’t care.”
She gave him a glare before leading Laddie away, grumbling to herself. As they left, Vera approached David, her arms folded over her chest as she gave him a look.
“Are you really out of money?” She asked skeptically.
He finally lit his cigarette and took a drag. “Does it matter?”
“You’re just mad still, aren’t you?”
“Mad about what, Princess?” He asked dryly.
She rolled her eyes. “And here I thought last night might’ve put you in a better mood…”
“I know it put me in a good mood!” Marko piped up.
David sighed. “I wasn’t exactly planning on having Star around much longer. Sorta went behind my back with that one, sweetheart.”
“I wasn’t behind anyone’s back,” Vera argued. “It’s like I told you last night. I just want one big, happy family now. Is that so much to ask?”
David snorted a laugh, exhaling smoke through his nose. “You’re starting to sound like Max.”
“Am I?”
“Totally.” Marko said, leaning back against the boardwalk railing. “He’s always going on about family.”
“He wanted perfect sons, but he got us instead,” Paul grimaced.
“I think he likes you guys,” Vera said. “If he didn’t, why keep you around?”
“Good point.” David said, sounding like he wanted to cut the conversation off before it could develop any further. “Hungry, sweetheart?”
“Not really more than usual,” Vera sighed. “I’d rather go do something.”
“Like what?” Marko asked, already turning to climb up the railing.
“Something I haven’t done yet,” She craned her neck to look out towards the rides and games. She really hadn’t gotten to do very many of them, what with most of her time being spent getting hot and heavy with the boys, and she wanted to finally explore their stomping ground some more.
What to do, though? She could make them win her things at the games, but they were practically guaranteed a win, and that took some of the fun out of it unless she really wanted one of the prizes. Maybe there was a concert they could go listen to..? But then she would be all packed in with a bunch of blood bags, and that would defeat the whole point of not eating yet. As her eyes roamed over the roller coaster and the rest of the boardwalk, she began to grow frustrated with her own indecisiveness.
And then, she saw it. The most beautiful beacon in the night that she could possibly ask for.
“Hey, is that a carousel?”
David followed her gaze, smirking when his eyes fell on the brightly-lit attraction. “Sure is.”
“Wanna go check it out?” Paul asked eagerly, ready to go do something finally. “There’s tons of shit to get into over there…”
“Yeah, I wanna go have some fun,” Marko groaned impatiently.
“Yes. Yes, I totally do.” Vera grinned as David took her hand, and soon, the five of them were off, cutting through the crowd towards the carousel.
As they got closer, she could see that it was busy, playing a cheerful carnival tune as the lights blinked and glowed and the horses rose up and down in a never ending loop. It was covered in humans, guys standing there while their girlfriends rode the horses, kids who were only out so late because it was summer and they didn’t have to go to school in the morning, the occasional tourist looking absolutely fascinated with the whole thing. Vera recognized the faces of a few Surf Nazis she had seen around, but she didn’t pay much attention to them—she had more important things to worry about, like hopping the barricade and lunging for a vacant horse the second she spotted it.
She sprang away from David, practically attacking the carousel in her mad dash for a steed. He and the boys were left staring after her in surprise, following her lead after a moment and hopping on behind her. They were too slow, though, sauntering their way over, and by the time they stepped on, Vera was already a good ways ahead of them, and they had a sea of people to wade through.
David strode forward with a smirk on his face. The carousel always put him in a good mood, and as the others followed, he could hear them yelling and laughing as they hung onto the poles and bounced around. It had been a while since any of them had been on the carousel, and Paul and Marko were especially glad to finally be back.
Especially now that they were surrounded with their favorite snacks.
There were rival gang members everywhere, a whole cluster of Surf Nazis just up ahead. Vera had managed to find a spot right next to them, but as she sat atop her horse and enjoyed the simplicity of the wind in her hair and the gentle rise and fall of the ride, she barely even noticed. She was pretty sure a couple of them were yelling at her, but if they thought she was paying any attention, they were even dumber than they looked.
David, meanwhile, was paying them plenty of attention.
The Surf Nazis irritated him to no end. They lurked around, putting up their graffiti everywhere and tagging shit as if it was theirs instead of his. The way he saw it, they needed a reminder that Santa Carla belonged to The Lost Boys, and even if they had no idea what they really were, they were going to listen to them.
Sitting on one of those little lovers’ benches, he spotted Greg and Shelly, two of the very few whose names he actually knew. Greg was a big guy with a nasty streak that David had personally witnessed plenty of times, and Shelly was a pretty blonde who hung out with her meathead boyfriend constantly. Paul had been whining about wanting to eat her for the longest time, but before he could, Vera had shown up and turned their worlds upside down. Now, they could get back to their usual business of running their boardwalk, and at that moment, that meant picking a fight.
As he came up behind the bench, David glanced towards Vera. The sight of her there, so happy and carefree, was something he could drink in for hours—but, more importantly, she was distracted, and he was free to lean down, grab Shelly’s chin in his hand, and wait for Greg to go ballistic.
And, right on cue, he totally did.
“The fuck do you think you’re doin’?” He snarled, jumping up from his seat and yanking Shelly back. “One bitch not enough for the four of ya? Tryin’ to take my girl, too?”
David stepped back with a smirk, Dwayne immediately stepping in front of him like a shield.
Greg grabbed him by the front of the jacket, trying to shove him to the side. “Get outta the way, you big fuckin’ Ind—“
He was cut off as David slipped past Dwayne to push him back, Paul and Marko finding themselves both grappling with a couple of Greg’s cronies. It was chaos, the carousel erupting in shouts as fists flew and punches landed. By the time Vera turned around to finally see what the hell was going on, though, the quick scuffle was over—
Because their old pal Vernon the security guard had David by the throat.
“Alright, alright!” Vernon shouted, pressing his baton against David’s windpipe as he stood behind him. “That’s enough!”
Vera was livid.
The rest of the brawlers fell still, and she could see the way the boys were watching David. They were waiting for a sign that he was actually in trouble and not just uncomfortable, and while none came, because, honestly, he was fine, Vera was pissed. Her grip tightened on the gilded pole her horse resided on, knuckles going white as she held herself still. She could make Vernon let go of David. It would be easy. She could tear his arms off right there if she really wanted to, and so could David.
But he wouldn’t, so she wouldn’t.
“I thought I told you to stay off the boardwalk.” Vernon said, glaring at the Surf Nazis.
David sneered at Greg, almost managing a nasty laugh with the limited air that Vernon was allowing him to have. He hadn’t really expected Vern to come in and save the day like that, but as he was finally released, David was almost appreciative. The Surf Nazis, officially kicked off their boardwalk? That was like a dream come true.
“That goes for you too.” Vernon growled. “Off the boardwalk.”
David glanced up at him angrily, that quick, hot rage he was so good at suddenly bubbling up inside of him. The others could all feel it, and Marko had to bite his thumb to keep himself from grinning like a madman when David’s anger turned murderous.
“Alright, boys,” he said, gaze lingering on the security guard. “You heard Vernon. Let’s go.”
We’ll visit him later.
Dwayne let out a low chuckle and Marko smirked as they heard David in their heads. Vernon had been a thorn in their side for a long time, and the thought of finally getting rid of him so that they could do whatever they wanted was sublime.
Vera, on the other hand, was doing her best to pretend she wasn’t involved. Seriously…she had just gotten there! Why the hell should she be lumped in with the rest of them when all she wanted to do was enjoy a nice, relaxing carousel ride? Even as the bell rang and it came to a stop, she kept still, eyes trained forward. Maybe she would be able to stay without causing a scene. Maybe nobody would notice if she just didn’t move. Maybe—
“You. Girl. You too.” Came Vernon’s disgruntled voice.
She bristled.
He can’t talk to you like that, Dwayne growled in her head.
Easy. David warned as he tossed his head for Vera to hop down and follow them off of the carousel. We’ll get our chance for some fun.
Vera huffed impatiently as she joined the boys, Dwayne putting a possessive arm around her waist as he gave Greg and Vernon one last angry glare.
I want those Surf Nazis, too. Paul thought, lip raised in a snarl cleverly disguised as a grin.
One thing at a time. David smirked as they hopped the barricade, the crowd parting for them. One thing at a time.
