the next set of guys i wanna introduce for VotHa!! meet brisa, the medium's head statistician, and her infamous, long-dead brother, zenith. for the adult cast, at least, Visions is a very siblings-focused story...and much of the cast's relationships with one another revolves around how they viewed zenith, especially for brisa. Everything Is This Guy's Fault!!!!

the (under)world of this universe operates as a bureaucracy: different departments of the medium handle different aspects, means, and sometimes even interpretations, of death and the afterlife. above all of that, though, stand the recordkeepers: the head statistician and the head librarian, who compile information encompassing all departments. they're both usually hereditary positions given to the current ruler's siblings...head statistician brisa, however, is in quite a tricky position: she's currently interim head necromancer, alongside her usual duties, picking up the mess that her brother's trial and resulting political unrest has left behind...

suddenly handed the responsibility of raising a child to be an heir well-respected enough to repair the public image of the petaloudas after both zenith's execution and atalanta's parents getting assassinated, she's called for the assistance of the horsemen, four powerful siblings and medium officials who knew zenith quite well, in training atalanta. little did she know that despite their well-deserved reputations as powerhouses, they're...far more eclectic than she'd bargained for. and also just as inexperienced with children as she is. and have essentially become yet another responsibility to handle on brisa's already-full plate.

as atalanta uncovers more about the baggage zenith left behind, however, both physically and emotionally, perhaps her mentors could be of some use to her...and brisa, too, potentially, if the two ever manage to get past their rocky relationship with one another...and if brisa ever manages to get past hers with zenith. maybe as the last two survivors of the royal bloodline, they'll teach each other a few things about their family name...eventually.

and my nightmares will have nightmares every night

hello all :) this one's a day late because i finished it last night but didn't feel satisfied with the ending. come morning i....still don't really feel satisfied with it, but oh well!

i have ideas for every day from here to the end, so let's hope i can finish strong!!

title is a lyric from twin sized mattress :) cws: nightmares, trauma, memory loss of a sort, mentioned death and resurrection

Zenith has nightmares every single night since being resurrected, and they can't remember any of them. They're not sure if that makes it better or worse.

Admittedly, the other three had nightmares for a while, too. (Well, Dawn and Rosa did. Eve doesn't really sleep anymore, which is horrifying in its own way.) Not nightmares about anything that seemed related to them dying, though, just run-of-the-mill weird stuff. Running from bears. Giant pits in the ground swallowing their houses. The brain taking a creative outlet for the residual stress of dying.

Eventually their nightmares stopped, for the most part. Zeni's...didn't. At least, from context, ze assumes they didn't. Ze has no way of knowing, because again, ze never remembers any of them. Ze closes zer eyes, ze falls asleep, ze wakes up with a sudden jolt and a feeling of terror that ze can't trace back to a source no matter how hard ze tries. 

On a good day, they just wake up feeling a sense of vague dread. On a bad day, they wake up screaming. They never wake up feeling rested.

Their friends have told them that sometimes, in their sleep, they scream things that sound just enough like words to be deeply unsettling. They've never tried to wake Zeni up from it. Zeni hasn't asked them to. Ze's afraid of what ze might do to them if they try.

Still, zer friends do help, even if they don't know it. Just having them there helps. When Zeni wakes up seized with terror and panic—gone they're gone all gone couldn't save them—it helps to be able to reach out and grab Rosa's arm, or Dawn's shoulder. The grounding, immediate and certain, helps more than anything else Zeni can imagine.

Which makes it so much worse to not have them here now. Zeni wakes up, throat hoarse, heart pounding in their ears, reaches out, and finds—

Nothing. No one. They're alone, here. It's cold and silent and gray and Zeni screams again, raspy and shaking, and presses themself into a corner of the room to ride it out.

what if:

fictional television show within the Cyanverse

a science-fiction family show, a la Star Trek or Doctor Who

about a gang of space pirates who adopt this random alien kid floating about in space (the 'alien' is just a normal furry with a googly eye headband because special effects are sorely lacking)

they set off on a quest to find the home of this alien kid

every episode they end up on a new planet and get into wacky hijinks

I'm definitely going for the '80s-90s show that has it's charms but is also quite problematic at points'

of the cast there would probably be:

1) heroic macho captain with a tragic backstory. the crew don't even know his real name and just call him Captain

2) 'emotions are for the weak' scientist with a tacky, vaguely German-sounding name. Dr Quarkenstein. That's not his real name. I don't think he even has a PhD. He tries to experiment on alien kid and it's played for laughs but in retrospective it's actually super fucking awful

3) femme fatale fighter who somehow ends up in compromising positions because of course. Writers try to make her and the Captain fall in love and it doesn't work and everyone can tell it's a poorly disguised ploy to stop people from shipping the Captain with Dr Quarkenstein. would make a great lesbian if the show allowed her to be

4) weapons expert who smokes 20 space cigarettes a day. has been through a lot of shit. has gotten the show in trouble a few times because of scenes where she makes bombs and chemical weapons in very excruciating detail

5) pilot and navigation expert who is very clumsy and presses the wrong button from time to time which is probably the reason why they get into so many hijinks in the first place. at some point it is revealed that he's been doing this on purpose in order to prolong the Adventure. a hopeless romantic and a terrible flirt. probably has some uncomfortable scenes with femme fatale

6) mechanic who stays on the ship and therefore does not get into as many hijinks. very chilled out except when someone messes with the ship, then he goes bezerk and shape shifts into a deadly space monster, and everyone then knows Not To Fuck With The Mechanic

7) alien kiddo. very sad wet and pathetic. filled with wonder about the universe and questions about where they came from. basically a proxy for the audience in the show for the space pirates to explain the space stuff to. textually non-binary but the writer were only able to get away with it because they're an alien.

8) the ship. an artificial intelligence with no gender identity but everyone treats her as if she were a woman. presented by the show as the 'mother bear' who loves her crew and would pilot herself and bring out all the lasers to save them if they got lost without her. can be a bit cheeky.

I know I'm leaning into stereotypes here, but that is kind of the point of what niches the show is supposed to fill

I decided some months ago that homophobia and sexism were canon (because indeed, before then I had been operating on the idea of 'the furries just never had these things', but that was kind of boring) so that's why the writers of this show are so wacky...damn...the one writer who managed to make alien kid nonbinary is fighting for their life out here lol

anyway I think Bjorn and Helga (and probably the rest of the science gang, although they didn't know each other at the time) watched this show when they were kids, through to their teens, and it helped to spark their love for science. I imagine they both had a crush on the Captain and would fight over him.

Caliburn probably related to Dr Quarkenstein a little too much

Zenith probably spent every episode wishing that the femme fatale and the weapons expert got together, and then texted Bjorn about homophobia whenever an episode ended with no results.

Fenrir would probably go hard for one specific episode where they encounter Dinosaurs In Space or something and only think about that, and then someone asks him if he likes the show and he says 'yeah' and then they ask him about something other than that episode and he doesn't know what they are talking about because he only remembers that episode

Jake never really sought out the show, but rather was exposed to it through Zenith. Looking back on it he realises the mechanic is basically just him...

Damien was probably just a casual fan who had it on in the background while he played with his Cyanverse equivalent of Hexbugs, and so couldn't name you a single character from the show, although he swears he's watched it

Noon didn't watch it growing up as they didn't have access to television, but knows all about it from Zenith. they think the femme fatale is cute

Dust is really pretty and I quite like their design.

I also really like Zenith's like the different scale colours, the patches, it's so visually pleasing to look at

And Olive, I really like Rainwings in general, but also her colours are really nice.

why is it a pattern for me to keep posting these a day late now. augh. anyway. back to the weird west for a while!! very excited abt this arc :)

i feel like i was not able to make the context evident enough in this snippet so to be clear: the situation is that our protagonists have obtained several different enemies on their adventures thus far, and keep eluding justice (or injustice depending on who you ask), and while they were at a party some very annoyed people showed up to try and citizen's arrest them for something

cws: capture/arrest (sort of), implied mob violence (i guess)

If there's one thing Zenith is good at, it's finding outs. Door's locked? Break a window. Fence in the way? Tear a hole. Road blocked? Drive off the road. Ze may cause zemself more problems in the escape, but ze'll get out. 

That's why Dawn, all through the sudden attack and the chase and the fall and the being surrounded, still believes that ze have a plan to get them out. She still believes it even when their hands are being bound together (as if one of them would try to escape without the other). But when ze squeezes Dawn's hand and says "Well, we had a good run," Dawn knows it's over.

She still turns around, scanning the horizon desperately, but there really is nothing they can do. The land here is too flat, too empty— they could run, but there's nowhere for them to hide.

At least Rosa and Eve are okay, Dawn thinks. She doesn't actually know that, but it's nice to think it. When the...civil authorities had arrived at the little party they had been at, Eve had faded out of sight immediately, and Rosa had been near enough the door that she'd gotten out before them. Dawn's not sure where she went, but they'd like to hope she and Eve made it back to the car and got away, and didn't do something stupid like try and wait for them.

...They would do something stupid like that. Dawn misses them already.

"Hey," Zeni hisses. "Quit making that sad face. We've been to jail before. It'll be fine. Eve and Rosa will come bail us out eventually, or I can finally try that spoon trick you never let me do, or—"

"Oh, you're not going to jail," a voice says. The civil authorities surrounding them awkwardly part, and someone dressed way too nicely to be part of—honestly—a mob steps in through them. "We don't think you did anything wrong."

There's grumbles of discontent from those surrounding them. Zeni looks a little puzzled zemself. Dawn is starting to feel queasy.

"No, you're just...misguided," the man says. "So we're going to take you in and help you find a...new path!"

Dawn has the horrible feeling that she'd actually rather be in jail.
