I got my copy of Roach's Delights: An OFMD Cookbook Zine, a fan charity project from 2023 I did the cover and a few merch designs for! This was my first time designing cover art and it was so cool and surreal to see in person! 🥰

The way special interests work in my brain is honestly fascinating to me.

Okay, so I’ve gotten through the gauntlet smorgasbord of special interests that was this spring (Hunger Games and Doctor Who and Sinners and Andor and Thunderbolts*, oh my!) On the other side of it, the reignited Hunger Games stuff is still going the strongest. I just finished my reread of all the books, including round two of Sunrise on the Reaping, and I’m about to start my rewatch of the movies. I’m eating good out of my Hunger Games cookbook. The music I’ve been listening to lately has been a mix of the Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes soundtrack and the Sinners soundtrack (which feel complementary to me because they’re variations of Americana,) plus some Hozier mixed in (spurred by this one Hunger Games edit that I’ve watched like six dozen times.) The Next to Normal proshot came in and seized some brain space, so I’ve watched that several times and have been incorporating the new cast recording into my listening habits.

And then my not-exactly-dormant-but-more-backburner Our Flag Means Death obsession walked in, smacked me across the face, and said, “The Gentleman Pirate, I presume?”

Here’s what happened. I wrote 1 (one) Captain Frenchie fic because I saw a Pride Month prompt and wanted to write something aroace. And then I spent maybe four hours reading other aspec-related OFMD fics? And then I searched for as many Frenchie-related posts as I could possibly find on here (and Roach, and Oluwande, and, and…)? And then I started searching YouTube for fan edits again, including rewatching old favorites from my playlist? And then I started rewatching the show for the first time in months? And then I started writing a second Captain Frenchie fic and have ideas for at least three more, plus dusted off a couple of my old fics that got lost in the WIP junkyard that is my head? And then I started watching the Wee John Wednesdays videos, which I’d previously seen clips from but never watched in full? And then I started pondering cosplay possibilities (or at the very least, Halloween costumes)?

At this point, I should probably tell you that it’s been less than a week.

It’s weird, because during April and May, I found myself getting upset and overwhelmed because there was too much special interest stuff to focus on at once, and I felt rushed trying to get it all in every week. Maybe that’s why my brain didn’t latch onto some of that media quite as hard and mostly stuck with The Hunger Games, since Sunrise on the Reaping came out just before the smorgasbord kicked off and had a little more time to really sink in. There were times when I felt strangely guilty, because it was like, “There’s so much great stuff that’s coming out right now, and I should be thrilled, so why am I so stressed?”

But now that that’s all over, my brain isn’t really having a problem juggling multiple intense special interests at once. The OFMD reignition is running through me with the force of a turbo jet, but it didn’t stop me from tearing up near the end of my Sunrise on the Reaping reread, and it didn’t stop me from happy-stimming at the awesomeness of the Next to Normal proshot when I rewatched it (again) yesterday. OFMD is definitely dominant right now, but it’s not crowding out the others.

It’s true that I have the usual issues popping up—“Okay, it’s time for work, you have to be normal and not think about Haymitch Abernathy for six hours,” “I know it’s 1:00 in the morning, but I can’t stop thinking about Frenchie’s costumes, and while I know his season 1 and second-half season 2 costumes would be easier to figure out cosplays for, my soul knows it wants to find a way to somehow make his Kraken crew coat.” And I still want to engage with all three of these special interests far more than there are spare hours in the day, but I don’t feel stressed or rushed. Instead, it’s, “Holy shit! Three cakes!” during all my free time. They’re much better able to exist in harmony with each other, compared with my experience this spring.

Don’t know what that’s about or how it works, but it’s interesting to me, so I wanted to ramble about it a little bit (and warn that the Frenchie- and other OFMD-related reblogs so far are but a drop in the ocean of what’s to come.)

OFMD recipe book #1

new hyperfixation acquired: the food and drinks mentioned/seen in Our Flag Means Death

Since I am procrastinating I might as well write up some of the recipes for you. Hey, they might be useful for any season finale parties you are planning.

Today we are starting out with

POORLY MIXED DRINKS more specifically:

Lime Ricky

Blood

an assortment of teas

bonus: somewhat creative interpretation of Juice from the Nose Jar

LIME RICKY more commonly known as a Lime Rickey, but don't tell Prince Ricky

time: 10 min difficulty: easy makes: 4 glasses recipe stolen from: https://www.thespruceeats.com/lime-rickey-908792

ingredients:

240 ml lime juice (freshly pressed if you are fancy and/or a minor prince)

70g of sugar (because of who I am as a person I refuse to acknowledge the existence of simple syrup, which the original recipe uses instead)

400ml seltzer water

lime wedges for garnish

steps:

combine the ingredients in a pitcher - really I don't know what took Ricky so long

add ice to 4 glasses if you feel like it

garnish the glasses with lime wedges if you so please

pour from pitcher into glasses

BLOOD edible fake blood

time: 10 min difficulty: easy makes: 300 ml recipe stolen (pirated, if you will) from: https://www.bbcgoodfood.com/recipes/edible-fake-blood

ingredients:

1 Tsp cornflour

45ml cherry juice (or water)

250g glucose syrup

red, blue & yellow food colouring

steps:

mix cornflour w/ 1 Tsp cherry juice in small pan

add remaining juice & syrup

gently heat (low), whisk well to combine

remove from heat

add generous amounts of red colouring

add small drops of blue & yellow, stirring well in between until colour pleases you

alternative idea: you could also make a (virgin) Bloody Mary. Ya get it? Because Mary? (yes, I am very funny- thanks for noticing). You have the internet, you can figure out how to do that if you so choose :).

TEAS comes in the flavours: Sleepy Tea, Dishwater & Co-captains' Morning Tea

time: 10 min difficulty: easy

ingredients:

for sleepy tea:

chamomile tea bags

a towel

for Dishwater:

Earl Grey tea bags (or any other "soapy" tea)

for Co-captains' Morning Tea:

any tea you feel morally capable of pouring milk and sugar into (recommendation: lavender tea)

a dollop of milk

seven sugars (yes, I know - it would not be the same with six. But drink at your own risk and use critical reasoning)

steps:

boil water

make tea

if making Co-captains's Morning Tea add milk and sugar

if making Sleepy Tea, serve with towel

BONUS: idea for some nutty nose juice this idea isn't fully thought through but the best I could come up with that would taste nutty would be an almond chai latte. Do with that information as you please.
