Yapping about why I love Aventio and what I feel makes it a great ship

(If you hate it I urge you to read this, because you don’t have to agree with me, but I want you to get where Aventio shippers are coming from at least)

I’ve just really wanted to talk about why I love Aventio because the people do not get it like I do and GODDD ITS SO GOOD WHEN DONE CORRECTLY UGHHHHH

Also this is gonna be VERY stream of consciousness I do not have a plan besides dragging you through my brain so enjoy the ride.

I guess the best place to start is the fact that Aventurine and Ratio are my two favorite characters in the game. Like even if they have no interactions with each other ever and might as well be from different pieces of media I would ship them, because I like seeing characters I like interact and the fun police cannot catch me. That’s a really shallow personal reason though and I feel like the rest I have will be able to be appreciated by others.

GOD THE DYNAMIC IS SO GOOD RAAAAAA

Two emotional constipated dumbasses circling around each other like black holes trying desperately to deny and run from their feelings when they have both fallen hard. The lack of acknowledgement of feelings on both ends is TRAGIC and it makes me want to rip my eyes out in a good way, let’s start with Ratio.

Unfortunately my glorious king Ratio has been mischaracterized to hell and back but we will get to that (and the Incorrect Reasons Why People Hate Aventio) later. Instead I will go over his actual character; a deeply insecure, intelligent man who desperately wants the rest of the galaxy to come to the realizations he has long since stumbled upon, but has been so isolated from his peers from such a young age that he’s doomed to fail in literally every social interaction he has and be misunderstood by both the audience in universe and irl (the autistic coding isn’t helping him either).

Ratio is tragically misunderstood again, both in universe and by the audience, which is why it means so much that Aventurine Gets Him. Aventurine pushes his buttons, tears down that literal cold marble facade masking the deeply silly and caring man beneath (this man bathes with rubber duckies in the privacy of his own home 😭), and that scares the shit out of Ratio. People aren’t meant to see through him, Ratio acts rude not just because he believes it’s the best way to help people, and because he believes he himself is mundane and the conclusions they come to should be their own, not his.

No, it’s also because on some level Ratio is afraid to be vulnerable around people. As much as he pretends like it doesn’t affect him, Nous’s rejection has hurt and haunted Ratio for his entire life. And I do mean his entire life, even in high school he had already set up a strict routine for himself, something commented on by his teacher, Ratio has quite literally always been striving for some sort of perfection and the fact that he cannot achieve it kills him.

Moreover, the guy just grew up way too fast, he didn’t have time to develop social skills. We see it in that afformentioned relationship with his teacher, in which they recommend Ratio (who is again in high school) to be moved up to college level stuff and transferred due to his success. He has quite literally never been able to just relax in a environment of his peers, Ratio for some reason we don’t yet know has always been dedicated to constant improvement and that leaves no room for dealing with failure.

On some level, he knows this too, that he can never be perfect. Ratio is part of the Mundanites in the Intelligenica Guild for a reason, he doesn’t just see himself as mediocre because he believes everyone is and that’s ok, but also because he looks down on himself for being too mediocre for the Genius Society, being too mediocre for Nous’s acknowledgement, being too mediocre for anything.

Which is tragic because Ratio is very accomplished and he is very smart, and his character stories aren’t even told from his pov, but rather in the style of documentaries and letters (his professor) and other works on his well acclaimed life. We don’t ever get to see how Ratio really sees himself, just the tiny cracks in his marble facade that let the real man behind the character shine through.

Because that’s what he’s playing 90% of the time, a character. Whether it be at the Herta Space Station in which his real goal was to uproot the researchers blind worship of the Genius Society, or in Penacony in which he plays up the arrogant, narcissistic scholar both people in universe and irl make him out to be, both to serve a goal bigger than himself.

Sincere moments from Ratio are RARE but god are they beautiful, his conversation from Screwllum in 1.6 and his note to Aventurine in 2.1 will forever haunt me in the best way possible. If you want to understand Ratio as a character, yes read his character stories, but just watch that damn scene with Screwllum it is phenomenal. He cares so much and is so, so bad at expressing it, he drives me nuts, Veritas Ratio the man you are.

And the thing is, it seems like he’s always been playing a character and doesn’t know where the real him ends anymore so he just sticks to the way people perceive him a lot of the time. Like as a kid he was constantly striving to be the best so he missed a lot of necessary developmental shit, and as an adult he’s a celebrity so it’s hard for him to attach himself to others anyways because society and his students will hound him for it.

And then you throw Aventurine into the mix, and oh boy does shit get interesting.

Veritas Ratio, perfect “unfeeling” Veritas Ratio and the one person who gets him well enough to push all his buttons and expose the vulnerable underbelly he thought he hid so well. On a fundamental level, Ratio understands this, which is why he doesn’t bother with the alabaster head, as pretending the real him is just as unfeeling and uncaring is easier.

So he brushes off Aventurine’s jests as if they are an insult to his very existence, he can’t look in Aventurine’s eyes when he “betrays” him because his poker face would break, he leaves as soon as he’s done talking because lingering would allow the weight of their conversations to sink in. Part of it is because for pretty much all of Penacony, up until the note Ratio gives him, Ratio is acting, trying to play up the role of the arrogant, unfeeling scholar to make Sunday buy the betrayal plan, because to Sunday this behavior is signs of a bad relationship between the two (honestly the fact that the audience also interpreted it this way makes me mad like did yall seriously not pay attention, but also happy because if even the players were fooled that means Sunday buying it is believable).

However, even if it feeds into his insecurities, Aventurine knows that false facade and loves tearing it down. It’s very telling that the second time we see Ratio really freak out (the first being at Herta Space Station) is at the suggestion that he came to narrate Aventurine’s demo not because of knowledge or respect for the show or whatever, but because he genuinely likes the guy. What makes it even better is that Aventurine is the one who suggested it, and already figured out the excuses Ratio was going to use to deny it. Ratio can fool everyone else in the galaxy, but he cannot fool Aventurine, and on a fundamental level that is what makes their dynamic work, because Ratio knows Aventurine in the exact same way.

Aventurine can shove away people who care about him, out of distrust and fear that they will leave him like his family did. He can believe he’s unloveable and a person so detestable that even the actions he performs in order to stay alive condemn him to hate himself as much as the rest of the galaxy hates him. But, Ratio doesn’t see him that way.

Aventurine doubts his intelligence, if he has really earned anything he’s done and in his voiceline about Ratio, doubting if Ratio even sees him as smart or worthy. However, Ratios voiceline about Aventurine is about how he believes Aventurine is smart and worthy, and that his doubt will be his downfall if he doesn’t come to the realization that he isn’t worthless.

Ratio knows Aventurine’s one weakness, the one thing that could stop him; himself. That’s why he gives him the note urging him to stay alive and keep on living because ultimately Aventurine will only ever fail if he gives up. And The Note Is Enough, Aventurine walks into the event horizon of a black hole, confident he can return alive on the other side because someone cares about him, BECAUSE RATIO CARES ABOUT HIM, and wants him to live on even if Aventurine doesn’t feel that way towards himself.

In the metaphorical and literal manifestation of the meaningless of the universe, in the face of overwhelming nihility, Aventurine survives because someone loves him, and with that love he’s strong enough to brave even that.

Even if they can’t admit it out loud, these two deeply, deeply care for one another and trust each other perhaps more than anyone else in the narrative. The betrayal plan would have never worked if there was not mutual trust, Ratio wouldn’t have gone to Penacony in the first place if he didn’t trust Aventurine, and Aventurine wouldn’t have asked him to come if he did not trust him. We don’t just see this trust between Aventurine and Ratio either, and Jade and Topaz both trust him with their cornerstones, but ultimately it’s Ratio who’s physically with him the whole time, risking his life alongside him for the sake of their plan.

As much as people like to ignore it, lying to the Family members, to Sunday, is extremely dangerous and puts Ratio’s life in danger as much as it does Aventurine’s. Ratio is not an irrational person, he wouldn’t have done that if he didn’t have faith Aventurine would succeed, he would not have done if he didn’t think he would return. They have absolutely faith in one another and it’s beautiful.

Aventurine’s first constellation is named “Prisoner’s Dilemma” for a reason. A social experiment in which two prisoners are captured and separated, if they sell the other one out and remain silent, they go free but the other remains in jail for 20 years. If they both sell each other out, they get a sentence of 5 years.

But if they both remain silent, trust the other, they even if they physically can’t communicate and don’t know what the other says, they get the best possible outcome, only one year in jail each. It requires a sacrifice on both ends, they both still have to go to jail, but only for a year, and only if they trust each other completely, as if the other sells them out they will be in jail for 20.

The prisoners dilemma relies completely on trust, and it’s the exact situation Aventurine and Ratio face in the Penacony quests. Aventurines doubts if Ratio’s betrayal was real or not, even if he set it up himself, and Ratio worries about Aventurines survival, if continuing this plan will end well. “You can’t expect a featherless bird to take flight” isn’t just Ratio chastising Sunday, he’s genuinely worried that this plan will put Aventurine at too much of a disadvantage to continue on.

But they both trust each other, and if just like in the Dilemma neither come out completely unscathed (although it’s much worse on Aventurine’s end), they ultimately achieve their goal.

God is it sweet and corny in the best way possible

I want to kill this fandoms perception of stoic, emotionless Ratio because once people realize he’s actually the corniest mf ever is the day I sleep easy. He makes statues of himself doing Jojo poses, he plays chess versus himself, he named himself Veritas (truth), he loves rubber duckies, he literally sits in a bathtub couch, and Aventurine breaths and he gets flustered.

Ratio so deeply silly, chronically corny, it’s a crime he needs to be locked up someone stop him.

And Aven brings that out of him. His teasing reveals the goofball trying so desperately to disguise himself as a serious scholar. Ratio is very smart of course, but that only makes his silliness better, as you watch this absolute genius of a man behave like a tsundere schoolgirl.

It’s not like Aventurine is some paragon of seriousness either, he’s the one teasing Ratio, fucking around even in a serious mission. Yeah it’s partly because he wants Sunday to think he’s incompetent, but it’s also because Aventurine genuinely is having fun, enjoying himself before the serious part of the plan kicks in, and the meantime he does that by messing with Ratio.

Their dynamic of Aventurine messing with Ratio, and Ratio trying desperately to pretend like it doesn’t affect him is as hilarious and heartwarming as it is tragic, and that dichotomy is why I love them so much. It’s fun and it hurts so so much because their interactions being this flavor of silly leaves almost no room for the sincerity they both desperately need from one another.

AND GOD I NEED IT TO HAPPEN. RATIO MENTAL BREAKDOWN SCENE PLEAASEEE LET HIS WALLS CRUMBLE PLEEEEAASEE PLEASE PELADE PLEASEEEE EPLES DOLS AAAAAAAAAAAAAAA

They’ve gotten closer and closer and closer and soon something’s gonna snap because they are so close yet so distant and if something doesn’t change the tension is just gonna boil over AND I NEED IT TO HAPPEN. I need more Ratio scenes I need more interactions with him I need him with his guard down I need him to profess out loud that he cares about Aventurine I need him to break please he needs it, it would be so good for him. It doesn’t even have to be from Aventurine, just Ratio snapping and revealing the fucking mess he is under his facade and not being rejected by the people he cares about for it is enough.

I honestly doubt it will happen in the story though, as much as I want it to. Although Aventurine’s character demo somewhat changed my mind against this, I feel like hoyo is like “ok they get the vibe between these two we can move on” and the shippers are left to extrapolate how this relationship would go beyond what it is now. As much as I want a breakdown scene for Ratio in general, it probably wouldn’t happen in a while but devs if you are reading this PLEASEEEE.

The only time Ratio ever gets slightly out of his element is with Aventurine but I need it to go further because god it would be interesting.

Well I’ve deemed that enough yapping about why I love Aventio (for now 😈) so let’s talk about why people hate the ship and why most of the reasons behind it a fucking stupid. (Massive disclaimer of course you can dislike it it’s just a lot of the “oh it’s a horrible ship and anyone who likes it sucks” shit isn’t grounded in reality in the slightest and I’m tired of the slander)

“Ratio was racist to Aventurine”

Now this is a spicy one because if this post was made in 2.0 I would 100% agree with you (during that time I shipped a non canon version of them in which that did not happen because how dare u do my boy like that hoyo). However 2.1 changed a lot and I mean a lot, and basically reframed the 2.0 quests for everyone.

Essentially, Ratio and Aventurine were both acting in that argument scene, making the things Ratio said to Aventurine not how he really sees him, and actively something Aventurine wanted him to say, so you cannot blame him for what he said. I’m not even joking or exaggerating, retrospectively it quite literally does not make sense if you view it in any other way, and honestly even with just the knowledge of 2.0 the scene doesn’t make sense if played straight, so let’s get to why.

a) Ratio and Racism do not mix fundamentally. Ratio is a person who believes that everyone deserves and education regardless of background, that it is a scholars duty to help others achieve that, and no matter who you are, you are capable of intelligence, learning and becoming the best version of yourself, and that those qualities are just limited to geniuses.

THIS AND RACISM DO NOT MIX. “Oh yeah education and improvement is possible for everyone except this specific group of people for some fucking reason!!” Like not only would this scene being serious contradict Ratios entire character, the man who believes people should not be judged for their educational background judging Aventurine for his educational background (that’s actually what the Sigonian upbringing line meant, it was mistranslated in the EN version)??!?!! Make it make sense.

Moreover, half this perception also come from the fact that hoyo made the incredible writing decision of naming Aventurines planet after a slur for Romani people, so unfortunately literally anytime its name, Sigonia, is brought up you’re essentially saying a slur. It’s much worse in the CN version, in EN it’s not obvious at all, because our version of the slur (it starts with a g and ends with a y that’s all the hints you’re getting), doesn’t look like the version of the slur that the name for Sigonia was derived from, which is partly the source of this misconception as I’m pretty certain most people assumed Ratio (and by extension Sparkle) said a slur elsewhere in the conversation when in reality them referring to Avens ethnicity/background/planet IS the slur.

Anyways terrible writing decisions aside, Ratio supposedly being racist doesn’t just contradict his core motivation, it contradicts his job. He’s a scholar, for fucks sake, and racism is inherently illogical. Mmm yes I’m gonna base my identity around finding truth for myself and I will believe government and social propaganda about specific groups of people! Very logical, very scholarly, we all clapped.

So yeah, doesn’t make sense on a character level, to the point that in 2.0 I concluded that they must be using Ratio as a plot device in that scene to deliver some of Aven’s backstory to the audience due to how OOC it was for him 😭. However I wasn’t necessarily wrong, Ratio was delivering some of Aventurines backstory to AN audience (not just us), and he was behaving OOC in the 2.0 scene, but it was on purpose.

b) The betrayal plan

Aventurine forms a plan in which him and Ratio pretend to betray one another in order to sneak the Aventurine cornerstone into the dreamscape by replacing it with the Topaz stone (red herring + black hole scene dialogue implies she and Jade are there for other reasons) and the Jade stone (perfect dupe).

Now this betrayal hinges on Sunday, their main antagonist buying it, actually believing that Ratio would betray Aventurine on a mission as important as Penacony, and it requires Sunday also buying that he is winning the whole time, that the loss of the cornerstones was somehow a fumble on Aventurine’s end rather than something he planned all along.

So, they stage the 2.0 conversation. Ratio yells at Aventurine for losing the cornerstones, something which was part of their plan the whole time. He then insults Aventurine’s background allowing Aventurine to reveal key details of his past that Sunday would not have learned otherwise, which he uses in the trial against Aventurine. Seriously, Aventurine only found out he was the last Avgin when he became a Stoneheart, do y’all think Sunday summoned that info with his mind or something during the trial (like do you guys genuinely think Sunday read his wiki or something)

Moreover, Ratio not only insults him, but portrays Aventurine as useless, disposable to the IPC because he is apparently already sentenced to death. Why does he do this? Well, so Sunday feels confident enough to do the same to Aventurine. Seriously, sentencing an IPC member, especially a high ranking one to death is a risky move, even for someone as convicted as Sunday, he would need the confidence to do so and learning Aven might already die would give him that ability.

Because well, it doesn’t matter that much if he’s already going to get disposed of in the near future. I also think the IPC plans to use Aventurine’s “death” as leverage against the family because they were pleased to hear of his death sentence according to Dr. Ratio, meaning a) he likely did not have one from them at the time, although in the past he was sentenced to death and b) even if Aventurine succeeded in getting the cornerstone his seeming loss in the rest of the conversation wasn’t actually a loss at all, getting sentenced to death/“dying” at the very least was part of the plan all along as the IPC could still use it as leverage if things went south.

Continually, Ratio treating Aventurine in the exact same sh1tty way the rest of the galaxy does perfectly slots him into the arrogant, uncaring scholar role, which Sunday knows are some of the most easily manipulated people in the galaxy, considering he tries to bribe Ratio with knowledge about Stellarons it seems he bought this idea hook line and sinker. Sunday isn’t even subtle about it either “I heard you and your companion haven’t been getting along lately” where did he hear that from? Ratio didn’t tell him, and even though we know Sunday was 100% watching the two of them on their little adventure pre-meeting him (the bird and hound statues) that scene hasn’t happened yet so where did he get that from?

Some other interesting proof for it is that the Final Victor lightcone likely depicts Aventurine trying to convince Ratio of this plan of his, the events of which must occur pre-Penacony for several reasons, the least of which being that we just never see it happen on Penacony which if you think it did we would see it. Moreover lightcones are canonically condensed memories and the Final Victor lightcone released in 2.0, meaning it’s the memory of something that happened before then.

All signs point to the 2.0 scene, the one people use to paint Aventio as toxic being staged. And I have so much more evidence for this, (Ratio would never agree to go without a plan, Aven clearly formed his pre-Penaocny, so much of the plan like Ratio opening the cornerstone box, which he can’t do up until the betrayal as it’s in Sundays possession, rely on him arriving knowing how to do so, the time discrepancies, the complete 180 in personality Ratio would have to do to go from distrusting Aventurine to putting his whole faith in him, etc), but I will reupload one of my old slideshows to elaborate more on it. Basically the one thing that people use to say it’s toxic is not true and is in fact a greater show of the trust between those two.

“The shippers are all weird and racist”

Now this one actually has some truth to it because yes there are some incredibly fucking weird Aventio shippers and I do not blame yall for disliking them.

HOWEVER, most Aventio shippers are normal and hate that shit just as much as you guys do. Like do you realize most shippers also really like these characters and have something insane called morals so they don’t automatically excuse racist fujoshi goobers just because they are making content for their favorite ship. Trust me someone doing that pisses me (and most other Aventio shippers) off significantly more than people who hate the ship. Also free Ratio from this shit man poor guy is getting mischaracterized as a slaveowner by his fans and haters 😭

And like guys, have you ever been in a fandom before, like ever? Weirdos are always gonna be weird and it’s not Aventio’s fault they are this months victims. For a fun little example of how gross other fanbases can be, one of the most popular Overwatch ships on ao3 is Genji Shimada X Hanzo Shimada WHO ARE BLOOD RELATED BROTHERS. THERES LIKE 300+ FICS OF IT, SHIMADACEST IS LITERALLY A TAG ON THERE. I WAS IN THE TRENCHES SEARCHING FOR GENJI HANZO ANGST FICS (Hanzo killed Genji it’s complicated doomed siblings will always get me) AND HAVING TO COMB THROUGH THOSE ABOMINATIONS IN THE PROCESS.

Like please I’m relatively new to fandom culture but yall cannot be acting like this is weird for fans to do, it’s weirdo behavior but it is not unique to the HSR fandom or even Aventio. And even if understandably this makes you not like the ship, don’t paint the people who enjoy it as being the people who do this kinda sh1t. It’s not our fault peak gets tainted by miserable creatures ok, let normal ppl have their harmless fun and stop lumping people together into a monolith.

Well that’s it that’s all the “valid” reasons people have for hating Aventio, at least the ones I can remember. Everything else is just personal opinion and not at all an objective reason.

“They’re so sibling coded!”

Anyways again obviously you can still dislike it not everything is for everyone, I really just wanted to make this post to demonstrate why I and many others like it, and why the reasons people use to say it’s problematic are incorrect. Feel free to call it mid, block it whatever I don’t care, just don’t harass shippers for having some harmless fun, because the characters aren’t real but the people who like them are and in doing so you are really just being a jerk for no reason. If you somehow hate Aventio and read this the whole way through I congratulate you on your ability to actually listen to other people, and regardless of whether you changed your mind or not I respect you for doing so anyways. Thanks for reading and I would love to hear your thoughts.

Tim should NEVER go back to being Red Robin. Red Robin was a punishment and Tim at his lowest. It’s like when Dick lost it and went to Detroit and told everyone he loves to forget about him. Not a good look.

Tim should become an adult hero. He is in a stage of arrested development because everytime he meets his future self it’s Gun Batman. Also not a great look and probably an ego death on a scale I can’t understand.

Tim should definitely never be Batman (see Gun Batman). He should get out from under Batman’s cape and find a reason to be a hero other than “I want to help my heroes and I feel good when I help people.” Which yes is a total simplification but Tim doesn’t have a strong internal reason to be a hero.

He should become something like Strike or Cardinal (every universe gets a religious brother!). He should find being a hero fun again. He should fall in love with Gotham for his own reasons that are conscious and arguable.

Red Robin was great because it was about Tim growing up and finding his own moral code, which was inline with Batman’s at the end. But for every arch in the Red Robin run, Tim is exploring why he shouldn’t kill and be non lethal and give people the benefit of the doubt. That’s great! It’s very reflective of what real children go through in their later teen years. Tim is teetering on the edge and with each lesson explored and learned, he takes a step away from the ledge Jason was flung over. That’s good writing!

If I was writing Tim Drake, I would pick up with him feeling lost and going through the motions. He has his friends and his family and his cute boyfriend but he’s directionless. He’s working at Wayne Enterprises, a majority stockholder with very little say in the day to day on goings, maybe he’s got a small job in R&D where he gets to dick around with Lucious Fox every day. He goes on patrol and fucks around with his brothers and dad. He joins the Titans on the weekends to run small missions but isn’t an active live-in member of the team because he just doesn’t feel ready to leave Gotham. He goes on weekly dates with his boyfriend and tests him good morning kiss emojis. His life is quieter after the turmoil of his late teens. He’s settling into a grove but that finally leaves him time to think about what he wants to do.

Tim never planned to be a hero his whole life but here he is. He doesn’t need to work. He’s stupid rich and his dad is stupid rich. He hates school, going to college makes his skin itch. Bernard is in culinary school and sometimes hints at a trade school or getting a job just to have something to do for more than 10 hours a week and give him a chance to socialize. Tim is always at his best when he gets to socialize even if he claims he’s an introvert.

And then there is an inciting incident. A case makes Tim enroll in Gotham U and he sits in a few classes looking for a rogue his age. But he finds he actually likes it. It’s not like high school with so many rules and restrictions. The small discussion groups require real thinking. He’s not here to impress the teacher and get a decent grade. He talks about it with Bernard. For a second he even forgets about the case, he’s just so excited about the topic of discussion in his Ethics and Philosophy class.

So when the case is over, he considers signing up.

But then he worries about heroing and if he’ll have time. And he really really hated school…

And then he finds out his friends are going to be graduating college soon. Steph is graduating college next semester. Did he miss his chance? Would it be weird to be a 21 year old freshman?

But then there is another case. This time about a professor. Clearly something is in the water in Gotham U. Turns out that other case is connected to a conspiracy about the school so he keeps going and he keeps attending class. He jokes with Dick that this is the universe telling him to get a degree and Dick looks at him with that inquisitive look as he sees through Tim’s bluster and says “It’s okay to want something different.” And it stuns Tim. But of course Dick Grayson would know just what to say. It’s Dick Grayson.

And the story progresses. He makes new friends. Mostly for the case but he really likes them. And he has a panic attack over midterms. He hates tests. Bernard makes him hot coco and encourages him. He does well in class. Bs & As and some Cs but he doesn’t feel pressure about GPA because he’s not “really going anyway.” And then it’s finals and he finally catches the rogues which turns out to be a secret society of alumni who find smart students and encourage (pressure) them to take up villainy (usually not caped but Lex Luther can’t be the only evil businessman in Gotham!) to enrich the members of the secret society.

And the whole time, he’s enjoying college and his hero job. It feels like when he first ran away from JPV and set out to do his own thing as Robin. It’s not like he’s always hiding under Bruce’s cape but it’s nice to be fully in charge of his case again. He doesn’t go to the Batcave at all. He just works out of his nest in Crime Alley because it’s closer to campus. Bruce stumbled his way through saying he’s happy to see Tim back at the nest and Tim feels happy even if Bruce insults his house boat like two times. It’s nice to see his dad validate him as his own adult hero, spreading his wings.

For some reason (comic book logic insert here) he can’t go out as Robin. He doesn’t want to be caught associating with the Bat. The secret society is really good at hiding from the Bats, it’s how they’ve lasted this long. So he has to design a new look that isn’t Black & Red. He keeps the bat insignia off because it’s temporary and, again, he doesn’t want this touching Batman. He’s just on his own taking down this secret society that encourages corruption and destruction in Gotham.

(Maybe at some point he has to hang out with Helena and it just feels really nostalgic and nice! Listen I love their sibling dynamic!!)

And at the end, he’s finished one semester of Gotham U, he has a new costume that feels good and is all his own, not a legacy he has to uphold or a punishment he’s inflicting on himself because of grief and rage. And he feels good. It’s the best he’s felt in so long. He feels like he has purpose, that he’s in control of his life instead of just moving day to day.

He doesn’t want to give up this feeling.

So he signs up for next semester, tells his friends and family and boyfriend he’s going to college, and slaps a bat on his new costume and introduces the world to Strike.

Dream Boy

Summary : In which the sweet dream boy you saw freshman year turns into Your dream boy sophomore year

You and Gavin first met a Umich your Freshman year in the first week in one of your many classes you had together . But you first saw Gavin at freshman orientation and immediately had a crush on him . You and Gavin basically had almost every class together . You can't lie he was hot and sweet but you didn't want to get in a relationship as this was your start to college and you knew most college guys that were freshman were just looking to hookup .

Over the first couple months after meeting Gavin you had gotten close, you guys had had study dates even though both of your friends you brought along to make it less date like told you they were just third wheeling and it was indeed a study date . You brought one of your friends from your theater class and Gavin brought one of his teammates from the hockey team .

After that you and Gavin got even closer now from the study dates you were now going to each others events you invited Gavin to your showcases and he invited you to his hockey games and sat with the other girlfriends . This went on for the rest of the year .

Then the day you had been dreading since you met Gavin had come the last day of classes , which meant not seeing Gavin as often due to summer break and you hated that .

At least for now you didn't have to think about that because there was one big event left : The Umich Hockey End of Year Party which the hockey team . Gavin had invited you saying that is was one last big hangout with all the guys and your friends to hand out before you left as his friends and your friends had kind of meshed into one big group. So as your leaving your last class you are texting Gavin and he let you know the dress code is just umich colors .

Later that night about an hour after the party started you are almost done getting ready. You decided to wear a dark maize tube top and blue shorts with a university of Michigan jacket but left it unbuttoned in the front . Just as you were putting on your shoes you got a text from Gavin :

Gav 🥰 : where are you I don't see you ? 😢

You : im done getting ready im heading over now lol

Gav : ok see you , when you get here park next to my car

About 10 minutes later you arrive to the frat house and park nexts to Gavins car . The house pretty crowded but thats to be expected with an end of year party . You enter the house and the sound of music and laughter fills your ears . You look towards the kitchen and see Gavin and his hockey teammates and some of the girlfriends laughing and drinking so you head over.

" hey Y/N's here " Ethan yells drunkenly , that makes Gavin turn towards you at the speed of light . You both make eye contact and it holds and you can feel the shift in your relationship. You had started to notice it about a week ago the subtle touches around your waist , the excuses made just so he can hold your hand and now this something is shifting and you aren't complaining

After coming back to reality and hear Ethan still screaming about the house reaching capacity but I couldn't really make it out since he 1. was drunk off his ass and 2. You couldn't stop staring at your boy . You can't believe your referencing him as your boy but you are and you love it

You and Gavin are still making eye contact but you are saying so many words his eyes are saying " come here " your eyes are saying " come get me " but both are saying " you feel it too" at this point Gavin has had enough and as you continue staring at his eyes as your standing against the counter he comes over to you trapping you in between his arms , " come to my room with me yeah" he asks . You nod your head as you look up at him.

He grabs your hand as he leads you up the stairs and his teammates see and they start whooping and whistling and you definitely hear Luca yell " Finally " you laugh as Gavin continues to lead you up the stairs to his room. You finally get to Gavins room and he ushers you in with his hand dangerously close to your ass which makes you smile and make your heart flutter a she closes his door .

Gavin walks to his bed as he takes off his shoes and sit on the edge . You stay back towards his door and lean on it as you both make eye contact . " c'mere pretty girl" he says. You walk over and you see him spread his legs open to accommodate your body , as you fit perfectly between his legs he holds the back of your thighs and pulls you as close as possible , he pulls you with so much strength you have to hold onto his shoulders , after you catch your balance you wrap your arms around his neck and stare into his eyes.

He inches his lips closer and closer as you say "Gav" in a breathy tone " I know baby I feel it to" " what are we now" you question " You're mine and I'm yours if you'll have me " he says. Thats all it takes for the damn to break and for you to crash your lips onto his , he groans as you quite literally take his breath away . He moves his hand from the back of your thighs to you waist as he pulls you so you're now straddling him and from there his hands move to your ass pinching and pulling which you take as a sign he's enjoying himself among other things .

After a while you pull away to catch your breath. "wow' you both say at the same time you laugh and blush as you hide your face in his neck. He then lays flat on his back as he takes you down with him so you're now laying on his chest . He laughs as you still blush with your face in his neck. " don't blush now baby you literally shoved your tongue down my throat a couple minutes ago" this makes you groan as he laughs even harder , that beautiful laugh you love so much .

After you both settle down and change out of the party clothes and into pajamas and for you thats just Gavins clothes you both cuddle up on his bed as he choses some random show to watch. The room fills with silence until Gavin says " its always been you since the day we met our first week of class " You look at him from his chest and smile as you say " its always been you too Gav ever since I saw you in freshman orientation " " But we didn't even meet yet we met a week later during the first week " he cocks his eyebrow " exactly my dream boy ive had a crush on you since I saw you during freshman orientation " . Gavin smiles as he leans down to connect your lips for the sweetest kiss you've ever had .

So, I am writing down ideas for jayvik fanfics in a hope, that if I write it down, my brain will stop obsessing about them. Last try in the end led to the fanfics, so I’m not sure that it works. XD

Ok, remember my old post about parallels that my brain saw between Arcane and Dead Space. So, hear me out: Arcane/Dead Space crossover.

I can already think about using DS1 and DS2 stories.

So, the first part will follow more or less the DS 1 plot, Jayce came with Vi for a plan check of Ishimura. But when they got to the ship, they got into a crash, which badly damaged their ship. Also, they cannot find anyone on a ship, and there is blood on the floor. Then they were attacked by Necromorps and separated.

While running through the ship, Vi met Caitlyn, who is part of the ship crew. And Jayce met Viktor on the Engineering deck. While Jayce with Viktor will be fixing ship, Vi will stop pollution of the ship and fighting Leviathan in Hydroponics.

Later they all will meet on the bridge in Capitan Nest (before that Jayce got separated with Viktor, and they agreed to meet at the Executive shuttle, which somehow still in working condition).

There we find out that Cait and jayce know each other, they met through their mothers who both were part of the Church of Unitology. And if Cassandra at some point lest the cult, Ximena on the other side became more and more devoured in the religion. It got to point that she sold all of her assets to the Church, if not for Kimmarmans help Jayce wouldn’t be able to get admitted to the college.

Cassandra tried to help her friend to leave Unitology and get her into a medical facility that was focused to help people, who were brainwashed by the Unitology cult. However, when her psychiatrist, thought that she is better and send her home, in few days when Jayce went to visit her he found her dead (by suicide) and in her will she bequeathed all her possessions and body to the Church of Unitology.

All because of all of this Jayce hate Unitology and he severed relationships with Kimmarmans, even though they weren't one to blame at that moment Jayce needed someone to. Caitlyn knew news about Jayce through Viktor with whom she stayed in contact.

Back to now, when our trio met each other and Jayce mentioned that Viktor was waiting for them, Caitlyn told him that he needed to put himself together, because Viktor died a year ago, during an incident on Aegis V( not very creative with the names at the moment).

For Jayce it will be the same idea that we had in Remake, when he was seeing Viktor helping him on the other side it was Mel, who was seeing Kino.

Mel wanted to bring back to the Aegis VII Marker that was found there to be together with her brother, who was asking her to “Make us whole again”, Jayce also heard same from “Viktor” while he was helping to duck Marker to the Executive shuttle.

Oh, yes about Vi, she was seeing at some point her sister Powder, who was dead for a long time. Caitlyn was seeing her old mentor Grayson, but as an agent of the EartGov she knew about marked Hallucinations and was prepared for them.

Trio tried to stop Mel for bringing Marker back to Aegis VII, but she, understanding what they were trying to do, was able to get on Executive shuttle before them and took shuttle to the planet.

That was it, it looks like out trio will die on Ishimura surrounded by monsters, but at this moment Cait decided to come clean and told Jayce and Vi, that she is an EarthGov agent, who was sent to Ishimura under cover, because number of Unitologists in the crew started to look suspicious, plus miners on Aegis VII stated to dig near place where Marker 3A from old experiment were buried.

However, seeing and going through first hand what Marker can do, she understood that EarthGov is not better than Church on Unitology.

So she informed others that there are one more shuttle, which is hidden Flight Deck and to which only she has codes.

Before leaving, our trio switches off Ishimura Gravity tethers, so ship 's tectonic load will fall back on Aegis VII and destroy planet, with marker and Hive Mind.

In the final scene our trio will be going into hiding and Caitlyn will try to download as much as possible information, before EarthGov will understand that she went rogue. And one of the files is about an experiment happening on Sprawl under director Ambessa Medarda and a list of “engineers” - people affected by Marker (different not one from Aegis VII) and used to build new Marker. Since this project is still in process our trio decided to get to Sprawl and stop this project before a new outbreak happens.

On the list all people are mentioned under their code names and two of them are “Jinx” and “Herald”.

P.S. So, idea was to make a short post with ideas … 850 words late I just finished part 1. XD

Okayyy welcome to my first (kind of, I did do something like this one) blog post !!!! I finally finished school, so this past week and a half has just been doing my own thing, preparing for commissions to be open, and trying to sort out all my projects…

Here's all the stuff happening in my life that I'll touch on: I. Commissions and websites II. Schools over, my art plans III. Linux adventures in stupid-land

Commissions and websites I did, in fact, finish my commission page and commissions are open, I just haven't formally announced it here and have been taking them from smaller sources at first. Did a bit of a revamp of my commissions, and posted about making my own site page for people to use instead of a carrd or some graphic design poster type thing.

I'm really passionate about Neocities specifically and I really want to try to get other people into it because I believe a lot of my mutuals on here would have cool sites if they tried. I want people to understand its actually not that hard at all and they should not be taking the "coding anything at all is so intelligible and hard u need to be a super genius to understand anything" sentiments to heart about it because actually if you wanna make urself a nice little site on neocities its very simple to learn and even if your site is built like ass no one on there cares.

When I first opened my Neocities it took me a weekend to make a single page and honestly the longest part was just drawing all the assets I wanted. If you're a creative person like me maybe spend an evening just drawing out an idea of what you'd like your site to look like and congrats you're already part of the way there. Planning is the first step!

Schools over, my art plans NO MORE WORK !!! for the summer. Now I have to get a job. but I'm really considering what to do after this degree. I came in so set on being a psychologist and that dream got stomped out immediately. So then I just chose to be a teacher. and like, I still want that, but. I don't think I'm ready? I try hard to volunteer and get experience, but teachers college is extremely competitive I just can't sort my life out to get a lot of experience I need.

I'm thinking of going to art school for illustration first and putting myself further in debt cuz that shit slaps when you don't have to pay it just yet! I love free school!!!! future Ridley will hate me !!!

This section is much shorter cuz its more personal, but just know these considerations are taking up a LOT of my mind space rn X_X

Linux Adventures in stupid-land

Since school is over, I finally had a single braincell to try out Linux, and try out I did !

For some background, I am not really a tech savvy person, at least I don't think I am. I only ever got interested tech about a few months ago, and before that I just kinda used my stuff like a normal person (and I feel I honestly still mostly do? at least, I am not a programmer. I just play a lot of games and draw art.) and it was mainly my partner lecturing me on Basic Stuff is when i started to know a bit more of what i should and shouldn't be doing

I think because of this my partner has been really interested the entire time I've known them to see how a normal person would handle trying linux when all I've known my entire life is Windows and macOS makes me wanna cry!

At first it was not good, but it was pretty much because my partner took my laptop and put fedora on it and I hated it so bad it made me stop using my laptop entirely and treat it even worse than before. So my introduction was unwelcoming. It was only when I just decided to get Linux mint myself on my laptop when I was like oh ok this is fine actually. It was actually so fine that a week later I ended up backing up all my important shit on an external storage so I can blow up my Windows installation entirely on my desktop so I can exclusively try out CachyOS on my PC, which i use daily. 5 days in and it's been good! I've tried a few distros and nothing is as comfortable as Cachy is for me and it was very much the perfect introduction to the Terminal for me since when you're on mint you don't really need to use it for anything and mint is a lot like Windows 2, at least to me.

My desktop so far! It basically kinda just looks like how my windows did lmao, but I like it ^_^

It's really interesting because I think me alone trying it sparked a lot of people I am friends with and know to immediately ask for help so they can try out linux themselves and like. I don't even know much but I think that's exactly why they immediately asked because they know if I can do it they can too. I've written guides for them anyways despite being a new-baby because It's so unnecessarily complicated for new people to learn and get into cuz a lot of guides just Kind of assume the person is like, majoring in CS and already know 'basic' concepts. So I wrote one to make it even more basic. and doesn't assume where you're at coming in. I've been told to post it but I'm shy! ( and also, I'd wanna go back and make it even easier to follow)

I only had to give up a single game.. which is Infinity Nikki. Really soul crushing bc im obsessed w that game. I play it on mobile only now but its not the same because its so bad on mobile. weh! I at first also had to give up Davinci Resolve (program I use to make videos) but I found my way around that and now I can use it :3

I HAVENT THOUGHT MUCH ABOUT IT UNFORTUNATELY if only because I think the only Lancer actually of drinking age during the 'main' present of College AU rn is Shay and the concept of Shay being a chronic alcohol-adverse Designated Driver is really funny to me

ANYWAY giving 'em all a good 5-7 years/dutifully looking away from any underage drinking, let's seeeeeee

Yuya: big bright colorful fruity rum-heavy drinks, spiked milkshakes, heavily fruit/sweet flavored liquors, etc.... if he tastes the faintest spark of the alcohol he is gonna be extremely unhappy LOL

Declan: hang on Declan is probably one of the most Glass of Wine coded characters in all of Not Lawrence actually. I know Henrietta was letting him have a small glass of merlot with dinner since he was like 13.

Celina: the aforementioned vodka. I feel like she brags about drinking straight vodka but in actuality leans more towards mixers and spiked seltzers and shit. i think she would also happily have a miller lite.

Sylvio: has been forcing himself to like whiskey and brandy and craft beer the second he turned 21 to try and look "sophisticated" but he is hating every second of it. oh god it burns. it fucking burns. HOW DOES ANYONE DRINK THIS. HE WANTS A WINE COOLER. HE WANTS A SEAGRAMS CALYPSO COLADA ESCAPE.

Gong: fairly sober but i KNOW he's have some good sake if it's available

Shay: the aforementioned sober designated driver. He's drinking a Liquid Death with Zane at the back of the club.

Dennis: ok i lied Dennis absolutely has had a drink order locked and loaded since he was like 18. I just know in my heart of hearts he's a hard cider guy. The white boy jumped out. He keeps having drinks with Atticus which is an especially awful idea for all parties involved but that's it's own situation.

Moon Shadow: man I'm actually not sure what MS's up to in this AU LOL it would be funny if he was just super normie with drink orders. Has a beer or maybe a low key mojito.

Riley: a nice mocktail :)

(This was written weeks ago but was in my queue. I am moving back to my college town Saturday so busy days are to come but now I have things to procrastinate 😈)

So YAYAYAY time for season 2 (my fave season overall) !! I’ve rewatched this one before, so i actually remember some of this lol

i love both of diane’s orange fits, but s1 leotard hits different

i have thots abt the introduction of power levels that will be told beneath the cut

i mean it’s all very dragon ball (which i love, but in a very different way). I feel like they are just better executed in manga format, because saying the numbers out loud just kinda breaks up the flow of dialogue and action. Plus the numbers never stay accurate since the characters are always powering up and nakaba lowkey just stops using them at one point. so like assault mode!Meliodas has a power of 142,000. BUT he defeats enemies with powers higher than that and is shown to gain even more power. But this is the highest number we have for him. Overall, theyre clunky, not updated enough to be accurate, and just kinda cheesy :/ I feel like plot could have been added to justify and explain the eye of Balor (AKA Drole if i remember correctly) but it’s just used as an excuse to quantify the characters’ strength since this season is mainly focused on physical and emotional growth, as seen by the Ishtar Arc (one of my fave arcs hehe)

merlin’s friendship with hawk is actually so cute tho

so Meliodas’s beginner stats (still missing his powers) are magic 400, strength 960, spirit 2010. The way I see it, his insane spirit strength could mean one of two things: bitch is just hella determined in his quest to end their curses and protect his friends (likely) or merlin taking away his power only affects his strength and magic since spirit has to do with your mind (also likely) anyway what do y’all think?

how the fuck is gowther’s strength 500??? The average person who can lift 50-100 lbs has a strength of 30. HOW IN THE FUCK?? IS GOWTHER SECRETLY SWOLE????

the first thing Zeldris says is “3000 years... please tell me that he’s still alive” which tells me two things: 1) he doesn’t know about Meliodas’s curse, which could explain why estarossa kills him when he’s just going to come back a rival to the throne of the demon king and 2) the listed life expectancy of 1000 years for demons is probably not accurate lol

maybe it’s driven down due to number of battle deaths like the mortality rate of the middle ages lol

So the whole concept of sacred treasures is really cool to me because they are clearly something unique to the Sins, despite all of the sacred treasures being very different and made of different materials. I mean Gowther’s is straight up made of light Still, them having weapons that serve as a constant and grow with them as they become more powerful is just a neat concept to me. I just wish we could have seen Ban use Courechouse more than just a few episodes. There really isn’t a plot reason he couldn’t have had it beforehand.

I honestly love that Meliodas destroyed the albion on his own. Like yes, he is my OP blorbo BUT he’s also supposed to be incredibly powerful in canon, which we haven’t seen him go all out with an enemy yet. Not only does he know all about albions (bc he’s a demon), but as leader of the 10 Commandments, he probably was on the controlling side of the golems. Then, as a member of Stigma, he fought against them. Not to mention, this is when he finally gets Lostvayne (the DEMON sword) back. This moment for me is when he gets to show off the perks of him being a powerful and high ranking demon. Might fuck around and do a full post later on Meliodas’s relationship to his own race and what/who he is lol

Also, I think them being super young just enhances the angst quite well.

ok since i'm all done with college. here are "some" alpha kid college hcs

DIRK (Computer Science):

either did everything a month before during an insomnia episode when the syllabus got released or the night before it's due. he had a habit of pre-doing the coding projects and only when he learned the professor wanted them to be done a certain way he'd go back in and edit them (sometimes. sometimes he'd just turn it in stone-faced and still get good grades).

type of student to show up and turn in his work via canvas but then skip class regularly. the main thing that tanked his gpa was a lack of attendance because he'd go through several insomnia episodes and then pass out for three days straight.

has dropped class out of impulse before and because of that took multiple winter and summer classes.

well also his overall gpa was horrible freshman year because he hated gen ed classes. the only class he liked was an ethics class that counted towards a social studies credit. he did not shut up in that class because he'd go on tangents and just keep going.

otherwise he doesn't participate in classes. his classmates know him solely by his projects. when they make a class discord a classmate will post about a coding issue, dirk will ask for the raw code, come back half and hour later with corrections that ALWAYS worked, then never spoke again. repeat cycle. they're too scared to dm him.

sometimes hal would use dirk's nitro that d is paying for to super react to classmates' messages but that's about it

JAKE (Biology major who got on his knees and begged for a Film minor)

he doesn't have aesthetic notes but otherwise he is the picture perfect example of studytok. he spends a lot of his time studying/researching/etc, and almost never pulls an all-nighter because he loves his sleep so much. goes to bed at 11 wakes up at 7 on the dot.

has only had two late homeworks his entire college career and both times he thought he was going to pass out from anxiety emailing his professors explaining he had gotten sick and was unable to finish it on time.

generally very quiet in class but will speak when called on. he typically sends his discussion responses to jaye/jane first to look over to make sure they make sense. he hasn't told his professors this but he gets really good grades because of that and goes "aw shucks" whenever a classmate compliments them.

his participation grade is usually B-range because he won't go out of his way to talk because of anxiety. he tends to get in detailed discussions with classmates via email or discord, especially the film classes that he's taking. his film advisor is still confused why he didn't just pick it as a major because it's something he's incredibly passionate about.

lives at the school library because of his major, uses the school computers most of the time just for convenience sake. when asked he says it's because his laptop offers "too many distractions".

JAYE/JANE (English with a Creative Writing minor):

"Why English. She would be a business majo-" SHUT UP!!! I KNOW MORE THAN YOU. He knows that he has a job at Crocker Corp if he chooses to take it and his freshman year he was undeclared and was looking at the business classes for the major and thought he was going to die and all the other business majors he kept meeting hated him. After his breakdown his dad patted him on the back and told him that he could choose a major that made him happy, that he can always go back and get a business degree later on. So he picked english and accidentally fell down the creative writing pathway.

He writes a lot of detective noir and stories that explore the duality of the gilded age vs great depression and exploring capitalism as a way to cope with growing up as the heiress for this huge company. There are always lgbt+ characters.

Extremely active in discussions and is well-known by both his professors and his classmates for never shutting up but his contributions are interesting. Because of the media he grew up enjoying he pulls a lot of older references that his professors enjoy.

Does not do his homework in a timely manner. It always is done ON TIME, sure, but he pushes things to last minute or spends so much energy making sure everything is worked on properly that it's done early by accident.

forgets to check class discord servers but frequently in dms when he can get over his anxiety. he mostly has all of his friends read his drafts before he turns them in to class, and they all love his little OCs that he is constantly thinking about. he also has written essays for all of them that they've turned in as their own work. they never got caught.

ROXY (Initially also Computer Science, dropped out, took a gap year, now doing Architecture)

Went into Computer Science because she was undecided but went with what Dirk was doing. She joined a sorority her freshman year for the social aspect and it accidentally really fucked up her career pathway. Her teachers knew she was incredibly smart but she could not keep up the lifestyle she was living, and she failed out of her classes even with her friends' help.

Took a gap year and realized that she was not going to be able to do Computer Science based on Dirk's sophomore year work. her mom gave very similar advice to what jaye got, except it was more like "You don't need to take the obvious pathway, think about what you enjoy most and go with that." and she realized she really loves building and construction. That was her favorite part of building her robots. So after a gap year she started an architecture major.

Extremely hardworking in her major but struggles with deadlines. Her charisma helps her out a lot (plus accommodations) that lets her explain her way out of missing project check-ins. Her stuff is always done in time for critiques but she frequently misses in-progress ones because of how she works.

She's EXTREMELY popular in her major. She has a ton of friends and they frequently camp out in the architecture building working on projects together. She uses her college dollars to get snacks for everyone and shows up with them. She tends to stay in the building until 4am and Dirk comes to pick her up. He doesn't mind because he's happy she's working so hard.

She's on track to graduate the year after everyone else does!! (She doesn't know that one of her professors is ready to give her an entry-level job at his firm when she does)

I saw the pilot for Helluva Boss when it first came out, because I already knew about/was excited about Hazbin Hotel pilot, and I didn't care that much. It was OK. I typically struggle to care about stories that center around different characters in the same universe as those I'm already invested in. I didn't care for Korra, Castlevania Nocturne only got interesting when Alucard came back, etc..

But in prep for Hazbin's release on Amazon, we banged all the Helluva Boss episodes that were out. At this point, I'd been in the room when the first episode was on once, but I didn't pay that much attention.

It took to the very next episode for my obsession to spark. The INSTANT Stolas picked his daughter up and sang gently to her, like a good dad, with all of the space shit going on, it was fucking over. I felt the new obsession unlocking in my brain. I could feel the attachment forging within me. I cannot express how deeply personal it felt, considering my history with space, astronomy, etc.. I used to LIVE for astronomy. I ran the campus planetarium. I had all 88 constellations memorized. I could identify all the ones visible from 48.5°N, whether northern or seasonal. I knew their stories origin. I knew a handful of other cultural constellations not recognized by the AU. I went to college for Earth/space science and physics (because astronomy isn't a major). Some of this knowledge has faded, but astronomy is so incredibly deeply personal and important to me.

So I watched the rest of the episodes that had Ben out at the time with this starry-eyed enthusiasm that was not disappointed. I fell so deeply in love with the autistic space owl that doesn't understand social cues or how to be in a relationship so fucking hard, and the same goes for Blitz. Blitz is shitty on purpose and I understood him immediately, I understood how he was pushing people away to make them hate him on his terms before they could hate him in a way he can't control, I clocked that shit because I could read his character and I really can't say what the "Oh shit" moment for loving him so much was, but everything he's done in episodes since that binge watch has not been a surprise to me. It's all been so in-character for him, to me, that I am genuinely shocked how some people seem to think his character is inconsistent or doesn't make sense or whatever.

Not really intending to make a point with this, I just wanted to write about how I got into HB. I guess, as I was writing this, I started thinking about antis again so you can call this the moral of the post:

antis who complain about fans being "biased" toward Stolad or whatever need to shut the fuck up and let us enjoy things. I'm biased toward Stolas because he clicked in my brain in a way no other character ever has for me, though other autistic-coded characters have come close. Other people are biased toward him because they think he's hot. Who cares? We like our favorite characters for our own reasons and none of them are any less valid than any other reason.

And the narrative likes Stolas. And I like the narrative. It's fun. I'm watching the show because it's fun and I like how it's being told so it is 100% reasonable to appreciate the story and its characters how the storytellers want us to appreciate it.

I’ve Been Trying To Do It Right

It’s official. Hipster music is back in vogue.

I never cared for hipster bands. Nobody did. They’re pretentious and not very skilled. All they do is stomp-clap-guitar-hey, and everyone is overly cheery. That’s why they rub most people the wrong way.

My issue with that style is a little more specific, and no, it’s not because it was the hold music for 911. They sound like that commercial that the state of Michigan put out when they implemented full-day kindergarten. Saying that out loud sounds forbidden, like I’m confessing something deeply personal. Full-day kindergarten doesn't affect you, you're in ninth grade. You just don't like the idea of full-day kindergarten because you hate change.

You can’t hate change because it always takes something away from you. You need to learn to embrace change. Instead of saying the change takes something away from you, say that you're displeased because the money for the symphonic band's trip to Singapore you were looking forward to instead got handed over to procure staff and supplies for full day kindergarten.

Except there never was a trip to Singapore. I’m not upset about missing my trip because there wasn’t one. This is different; this laid bare a fundamental problem.

When the state of Michigan rolled out full day kindergarten, they did something unusual to make sure that the kids had enough space to engage in play based learning - they lengthened the school day. This did nothing to address the crowding and proved to be highly disruptive for me because that meant instead of going 6 hours without food, I went 10 hours without food. Not good.

How does something like this happen? At my high school, kids born in odd-numbered months had lunch periods from 11:00 to 11:30, while those born in even-numbered months had lunch from 11:30 to 12:00. As a leap baby, the school couldn't decide whether to use March 1 or February 28 as the common year birthday, meaning I never got assigned a lunch period.

Today was the first day they rolled out the extended school day. I really thought I was going to make it.

I got through school without incident, which was good. Better still, I got myself invited to dinner with one of the 12th graders. Susan, Dana’s older sister, just finished college and would start her first job out of school in a week. Dana’s friend Vickie came with them and she brought her boyfriend, Jimmy. They said their parents would arrive a bit later.

I didn’t think we’d be going to Shake Shack. Honestly, I thought we’d be going somewhere a bit nicer. We were celebrating Susan literally walking off the stage into a new job, after all.

We entered the restaurant and sat down. I took one look at the table and said, “Oh, balls, no”.

“What's the problem?” Dana asked.

“There’s a sticker on the table that tells us to scan the QR code to see the menu and I've been grounded from my phone for three months.”

Jimmy looked at me and shook his head. “It’s not big deal”

“It is a big deal,” I shouted, “You're supposed to provide a menu in a restaurant. You gotta be stupid to do something like this”. I pointed to the QR code.

Jimmy didn't understand my objection. “How's that a problem?”

“it’s a problem because we're sitting there like idiots, waiting to order without a menu.”

I got up and began walking around the restaurant asking people what they ordered, how it was, how much it cost, stuff like that. Honestly, it felt like something my grandfather would do.

I saw a couple with a taco salad thing that looked good. “hi, I hope you don't mind, what are you working with, there?” I asked.

They weren't too thrilled by a random teenager sneaking up behind them while they were eating. “Yes, I mind,” the man replied, "Now go bug your parents!”

OK grouchy, I thought, it's not like I'm a bored 8 year old sticking my fingers in your mashed potatoes.

I made my way over to the table behind them. “That looks good,” I said, eyeing the meal, “What is it?”

“Just ignore her,” the wife from the previous table said, “she's being a menace”

“no I'm not,” I grinned. I turned back to the people at the current table. “anyway…” I continued before the wife interrupted me. “Yes, you're being a menace,” she clapped back, “Why can't you order from the menu like a normal person?”

“I got grounded from my phone and it's a QR menu”

The wife tipped her head to one side. “If you're grounded, then why are you out?” she snipped.

“I'm just grounded from my phone, not grounded-grounded.”

The people from this table gestures to a kiosk. “there's a self checkout there” they said. I don't know whether they were trying to help or they wanted me to leave, but either way, I have no idea how I missed that.

I got to the self checkout, found something that I liked and cost less than the cash I had on hand, got my meal, and returned to the table.

I didn't tip the self checkout. The cashier who gave me the food treated it like a dine and dash. She waited until I finished eating, then followed me outside and forced me to vomit up what I ate. Two guesses where the vom landed. She can't figure out why she got barfed on.

Susan stepped outside. “You’re throwing up all over the place,” she said, “and whose fault is that?”

The cashier’s, I thought. I tried to think of all the ways she could spin this to make the events that transpired my fault, but I couldn't think of anything.

I wiped away the vomit from my mouth and looked at Susan. “Alright,” she said, “If you could do it all over again, what would you do differently?”

I shrugged, “I don’t know, I haven’t been alive long enough to have that problem,” Usually, when people ask that question, they're talking about what you could do if you could do your life over again. They aren't talking about a specific point in time, just general regrets. Ninth-graders don't really have stuff like that.

“Wrong answer,” she replied with a serene severity behind her eyes. “Think about what you did.”

My mistake was letting myself go without eating for too long. Beyond that, I've got nothing other than don't poke me after 2:30 in the afternoon.
