i really gotta get better about listening to my own brain and needs when i'm making things. i've been working on a video and i'm almost finished (yippee!!), but drawing this One Specific Frame was giving me trouble. i could have just brute-forced my way through it and finalized the initial sketch, since it was relatively good enough. but instead i left it and took a day off from working on the project, let myself recharge, and came back to the sketch with fresh eyes today. and what do you know, my redrawn sketch today is WAY better! now, i can finalize that frame and be genuinely proud of it, instead of just powering through on something i was less than happy with.

i hadn't done any other art stuff that day when i couldn't get my sketches to look right, so letting myself stop and have a break from the project felt sort of "unearned" i guess. but it's just. what i needed! and the break did what i needed it to do; i was able to come back later and make something i could be proud of.

anyway i guess this is me saying that, if you're like me and have this weird morality-complex about letting yourself rest, it's ok to take breaks, even if you feel like you haven't "earned" one yet :)

This is so true and such a good thing to remember but I also want to add sometimes you really are worse at your craft than before and that's ok too.

Maybe you had to take a long break from your craft. Life happens. When you pick it back up again there are things you may have to re-learn. Take it one step at a time.

Maybe you've picked up a lot of writing advice that doesn't work for you. It'll take some time to figure that out and learn what's useful to you and what isn't. Writing styles vary just as widely as visual art styles. What works for one writer doesn't always work for another.

Maybe you're trying to write something you're not actually interested in. Don't force it if you don't have to. And if you really have to? Find a way to make it interesting to you or to make the writing process more enjoyable.

Sometimes accidents and illnesses happen that can have long-term effects on how we write and perform. There are so many different tools out there that can help you through all kinds of difficulties. If you find yourself in a difficult situation where none of the tools are helping — that's ok. Your writing does not have to be as good as or better than your old writing. It is still worth writing and reading no matter how imperfect or inferior you may personally find it. You will always be a writer until you decide not to be and there are readers out there who will love your writing, flaws and all. Please keep writing if it brings you joy.

Some final thoughts and tips:

Don't compare your unfinished drafts to polished, published works. That isn't a fair comparison.

There are plenty of authors out there whose earlier work was more enjoyable or more critically acclaimed than their later work. That hasn't stopped them from continuing to write. Don't let it stop you either.

I guarantee there is a reader out there for your writing no matter what. Everyone has different taste and one book's flaw can be another book's strength.

Go look up Lynda Barry's art. She draws "bad" on purpose. She draws like a child and it is so inspirational. Many of my peers attended a workshop of hers near the end of their illustration degrees and it had such a profound impact on them. She gave them permission to be "bad" at their crafts and showed them there's joy in doing something imperfect. I guarantee there can be joy in writing "bad" too.

so for this section, i'm going to break down everything thats happening + when things will come off hiatus! i'm hoping that everything will be set up in the new place by JUNE 1st, so that is the hard deadline i'm setting to start all functions up again as usual.

WHAT'S HAPPENING?

two years ago, my fiance and i were offered emergency housing when we (very suddenly and tragically) became the parents to his orphaned little sister. both of us are only 26 and had to move 8 hours from where we had been living at the time, so the housing we had was the best 2 people with few connections and no established jobs could find within a single weeks notice.

since then, we have been saving up and working to finally have a proper place to live. and we did so! at the beginning of this month we found an apartment where all of us can move to. we have a friend staying with us who is helping with the move as well.

i really wanted this move to be seamless - basically, you wouldn't have had to know it was happening. we were going to pay double rent for two months while i would stream and work from the old place, and begin sleeping at the new one. its expensive, but i didn't want my real life to trouble anyone here.

unfortunately this is no longer possible. the old building we were staying at had a pipe begin to leak, then eventually flood our entire apartment. this has been a reoccurring problem the landlord hasn't seemed to find a solution for, and it's led to a biohazard where we were planning on slowly moving from - leading to an immediate and emergency evacuation for the safety of everyone in our family.

FINAL NOTES

while we did manage to get out with emergency bags and a weeks worth of outfits + things to sleep on + cook with, we have no real means of knowing the extent of damage until we bring things out of the apartment and clean them here. thankfully *most* things appear undamaged, its largely the flooring and the smell that are unliveable... walking through puddles of sewage water and having to wear a mask to breathe is not really liveable conditions.

however, considering this move is sped up way faster than planned, and i wont be able to work during it - any sales or donations are hugely appreciated. ; w ;

i was thinking about this since i posted earlier about us needing to address the trend of gen z men being pulled into alt-right pipelines might have contributed to the outcome of this election.

i think contrapoints is really smart, and from what i’ve seen, has been way more effective at getting people out of harmful ideological pipelines than i’ve seen from the majority of leftists online who instead berate and drive a greater wedge of antipathy (though i understand why! and it can be very hard to have empathy for the people who see you as a threat). that antipathy makes the right more radicalized because they don’t feel like they can talk about anything without the “crazy lefties” who won’t even engage with them. where did these issues come from?

what i’ve noticed, and i’m even guilty of this, is that people don’t interact with groups of people whom they refuse talk to, which makes realities more hypothetical in the minds of their opponent since they aren’t open to seeing reality from their perspective. this is true on both sides. from what i’ve observed, it seems to originate from hypothetical perception of the opponent, but when people treat those perceptions as though they are real, it becomes real with their actions, which then makes the antipathy justified to someone. again, on both sides.

what makes contrapoints so successful at breaking this down is that is that she creates these socratic dialogue skits that represent real people and ideologies, has a sense of humor, isn’t afraid to discuss these things, reframes how we see these things by introducing nuance to both sides. she’s a leftist, but she also knows how to engage without ripening division, of meeting someone halfway and being completely humble about it. she is able to soften extremes.

she is able to get into the mind of people who aren’t aligned with her views, understand the nuance and rationales from a realistic perspective, breaking down a big block of “this is all bad” into “ok, some of this makes sense…”, what this does is create a space for self-reflection that doesn’t feel ham-fisted (which could otherwise cause people to double down on their beliefs instead of opening up to other perspectives outside of their bubble). while also being entertaining and well-produced on top of it.

what she is doing is creating these scenarios and socratic discussions that SHOULD be happening in real life but aren’t in this polarized social climate.

i graduated from new college of florida this spring, the small liberal arts college that was in headlines across the country for ron desantis’s board of trustees hostile takeover and exodus of professors.

new students and student athletes from conservative walks of life were being basically incentivized to go there who were taught to fear the lgbt boogeyman growing up in their conservative communities. but once they actually interacted with lgbt students there, many of them they felt like they understood them, and they weren’t as bad as they were told they would be. new college of florida was also famous for getting derek black (child of the man who created stormfront, and godchild of the kkk grand wizard david duke) out of white nationalism. their peers at NCF called them out but also interacted with them, invited them to dinner. black wrote a book about it.

now of course some people are too far gone and you shouldn’t waste your time with them, like derek’s family for example. but i also think a lot of people who voted for trump are not informed, are operating off of emotion and knee-jerk mentality because it’s easier than thinking, and they are not seeing the discussions that need to be had to change their mind because fuckin…nobody is doing them.

and we feel this visceral disgust to people of the opposing party because of its associations. i just want to know how it happened and how we got to be like this. i think social media is partly to blame and also the algorithms that take people down dangerous pipelines and sharpen them, insulate them.

i myself understand the vitriol you might have for anyone that voted for trump. i feel so disappointed that half the people of this country voted against our collective benefit. and i’ve seen a lot of sentiment from the left today saying “every single person who voted for trump is dead to me. i disowned you”.

you can see the reality of trump’s demagoguery, and it’s so obvious, but what i want to know is: what do they see? why did they vote for him? emotion and entertainment travel faster and have more reach than reason. and it’s that’s why i think contrapoints’s videos are exemplary at tackling this ideological divide. this is something i’ve been thinking about for months before today and i thought now was a better time than ever to give my two cents on it.

How I think Doey works

Okay, second big post where I get to rant about my hyperfixation to people who also like it, YAY! I'll start with how he works as an entity and then start rambling about Matt, Kevin and Jack a bit, and what they think of each other.

Ok I wanna start this by saying I've been lurking around posts and I love all the different ways that doey is seen by the fandom, with him working like a DID system, being more of just a car controlled by the three kids and the idea of him being something entirely new with only impressions of those he was made of; I love all the ideas so I kinda mixed them into one? I wanted them them to act cohesive and singular at times but I love the idea of them learning and working to keep safe haven and themselves afloat while also being separate; so I thought about it and figured out an idea that might work, or at least works for me.

Doey stuff below

So, I think that after they first got made they started off mixed together mentally and couldn't find the edges of their consciences, even though they knew something was wrong with all their conflicting memories; In this state their minds were in open communication, like a hive mind type deal, with immediate thoughts and strands of conscience being shared like they were only one being. But as time passed they begin to separate more and more, being able to identify which mental voice thought what and how they felt, until they were able to recognise themselves as individuals again (during this time they also learn to close their mental connection more, thoughts still flow but they can keep some stuff private if they want); they still stay connected mentally though (they call it being mixed) but develop the ability to split and take a step back, this means that 1 or more can split the mental connection and can act as independent minds. They can each do this though usually Matt acts as the main personality, fronting when they all split, and Kevin stepping forward when things get dangerous/aggressive. The split off mind/s usually act like a friend on the couch watching you playing a game, able to make suggestions and comments but not really interact; or they can just dip and take a break from everything (usually Kevin).

Continuing on, I think the boys would have done their best to keep their separating minds a secret from the scientists so they would urge Jack to split and dip if he doesn't want to be mixed with them so he doesn't have to deal with the invasive and traumatic testing that was likely done to them; this would change after the hour of joy though, with them being more loose about it and even having Matt dip and Kevin and Jack patrol at times. I think after the hour they would also learn that they are able to split in body as well as mind, which would give them new anxieties of the new possibility of losing each other and they would refuse to separate again except for an emergency that would force them too; they are very co-dependent on each other, like cats that have to be adopted together, If they were somewhere safer they might be more willing split occasionally but they refuse to risk each other.

Overall, they live as a singular conscience when 'working' but are more likely to split when in safer areas or when they're relaxed. They can interact when they mentally split like a lot of people make art of, like them doing silly things or talking or hugging; its very much like their own little private space where they can rest. Oh! and an extra note, if they do split their bodies and then mix as pairs instead of as the Doey triad then they make new forms depending on who mixed together, their personality would change too but the mixed consciences have controlled before so it wouldn't be as unusual; the mixed minds aren't always the ones fronting though, Kevin and Jack have definitely gossiped behind Matts back.

Talking about the boys next

Jack Ayers

Okay so, Jack's a bit unique in this because he doesn't actually keep aging till a few years after the Hour of joy and even then its slowed down; He has the mass and ability to make himself look older but he likes to be small. He also has amnesia, this is because of a mix of trauma and his death before being added to Doey, it makes it harder for him to recognise how bad their situation is and makes him a bit unnerving with his blunt comments. Playtime didn't attempt to induce amnesia during the creation of Doey like they usually due, assuming that the three minds would fragment each other until they had a clean slate left to mould, this was a mistake, as after Doey stabilised the process that they used became in-effective on their body.

Do to Jack not really remembering well it was harder for him to separate himself from the other two at first, but he ended up being able to adapt to what was going on well. He also didn't recognise his parents when they visited, this was relatively early in their creation when they still shared everything but were also able to ask themselves questions and get multiple answers; Matt and Kevin knew their parents wouldn't be there and Jack didn't remember his, he repeated what they said back as a confused question, not from recognition, and Jack didn't actually remember they with any clarity until a few days later when he knocked them into a breakdown. Jack never blames Kevin for lashing out and killing them, he knew every thought going through his head at that moment and he understands, he didn't really care much until he recognised them after all.

Kevin Barnes

Kevin most likely had bad parents before he was placed in playcare; For me I think it was mostly neglectful and verbal with it getting worse as he grew, I don't think his parents were kind to each other either but he saw others families interacting positively in his neighborhood, this made him feel like it might be him that was the problem. After an incident were his father was arrested his mother took the chance to abandon him and leave, this would have messed up his ability to trust others and with no knowledge of how to regulate his emotions he would have lashed out at those around him, ending up labelled as a problem child. I consider Kevin to be autistic and have anger issues, he also seemed to struggle with being social, mimicking games and roughhousing he had seen and being rougher than needed; I do think as an extra thing, that Kevin would be blamed for things he wasn't involved in, being blamed for someone tripping of something being taken: In the end this would make Kevin even more untrusting as the adults wouldn't be willing to listen to him trying to defend himself.

I also like the idea that Kevin got attacked to matt when he first arrived at playcare, like Matt being new didn't know of his reputation and defended him when some kids blamed him for stuff and if Kevin skipped most of a meal cos he couldn't stand the texture then Matt would sneak him snacks or a portion of his own if it was something Kevin liked. I like the idea of him being the one person that Kevin had much trust for and he wouldn't want to lose him, if the staff noticed that connection then that could also be why he was the best pick in order to control Kevin when they got put into Doey. I have other thoughts of them interacting before Doey, with them sharing a space to read and staying in proximity of each other(mostly for Kevins benefit).

Matthew Hallard

I think the accident that landed Matthew at Playcare was probably a car crash, one that he was there for and the only survivor of, as a result I think he was left with a few reminders; some scars, a slight tremor in his hands, headaches/migraines along with pain in his neck and shoulders that flair at random. After befriending Kevin if he had a headache come on while reading with him then Kevin would snatch it and read it to him, so he could rest his eyes. I like the idea of Matt enjoying taking care of the younger kids because it reminds him of his (non canon) sister, and he tries to make himself into a safe haven for the kids who were in bad places before being sent to playcare; I think a lot of the kids appreciated this and that was what made them so willing to listen and follow him.

After becoming Doey he acted as the main personality that interacted with the scientists, mostly due to his ability to hide his rage and hate in a polite smile and convincingly lie to anyone who spoke to them. I really like the idea that both before and after the hour they would be forced to eat any feral or aggressive toys in order to conserve the actual food for the littles(I can't remember where I first saw this for the life of me), Matt struggles with it the most because all he does when he sees their faces is wonder if they were one of the children he tucked into bed before he left that last night; after he shares that struggle with the other two, Kevin takes to tearing the heads off if Matt is hanging around the headspace while he patrols, Matt does get used to it over the years but Kevin keeps tossing the heads if Matts watching and not in control.

Although he would never, under any circumstances hurt you phisically or emotionally, even if he did he would apologize and hold you in his arms until both of you had calmed down. Despite his scary looks, he’s a massive softie on the inside, but only when he’s with you, gently watching over you like a bodyguard which causes you to explain to your friends that he’s just your boyfriend and not scary as he seems, which causes him to blush and look away.

• speaking of showing affection in public, he doesn’t really mind it especially if its you thats teasing and kissing him. Instead of blushing, his ears turn red and he has to cover them up when you are with him, he won’t admit that he likes you romantically, instead he says something along the lines of “i’m just.. very fond of you, mein Schatz” ok then why are you calling me that??🙄 in all seriousness, his love language consists of acts of service, words of affirmations and quality time. Nothing too special anyways for someone as big as him as kind as him.

• he’s really helpful when it comes to chores and housework though, he tidies up the whole house while youre away and prepares you food if youre hungry even if its 2 am, he still insists on making you a quick snack. He really knows how to make food despite him not being much of a cook himself, his meals always end up perfectly cooked somehow. Again, he knows his way around chores and housework, even if you’re not tired he still cleans and tidies the house up for you.

• he is very passionate about whatever you are doing, you’re washing the dishes after denying him to do them for you? He’s watching from afar like a guard dog and making sure you don’t accidentaly hurt yourself! It doesn’t even matter what you are doing, he’s always either trying to help and guide you or watch from afar. But when he helps you, he just takes over the whole thing no matter if he knows what to do next or not, he insists on you to go take a break and prosceeds to take half an hour figuring out what to do. Even if its an art project, he tries his hardest to replicate your style without screwing it up!

Marko is an only child, and he grew up without a father. His mother was a seamstress and worked out of their home when he was a child. His mother was Italian, and his father was Swedish. When Marko was born, they were already living in the united states though so Marko had never been to either country, and he had never met any of his other family members. his dad died when he was 8, so he hardly remembers him now. His mother, on the other hand, died on his 16th birthday, falling victim to the san Francisco plague in 1904. Which was an epidemic of the black plague. He had to abandon her in their home to avoid catching it himself. Taking the last of the money they had and the necklace his mother wore with a picture of their family in it. Not long after, he found the boys, and they all stuck together (as you can guess), but not until after he struggled around town by himself for a few months. God, i need to stop making this shit sad hand on switching gears. He was the youngest when the boys got turned into vamps he had only turned 18 that summer He really tries to act more mature than he is, but as soon as something funny happens, that's over. Marko has a really good sense of humor, but he finds a lot of really stupid shit funny. He's the type of dude to watch his friends fall face down ass up on concrete and start laughing and snapping a photo before asking if they are ok (he is me) This also can lean into how he does lowkey bully people on the boardwalk. Mostly surf nazis but let's be so deadass he's kind of a dick to everyone there in his own special way. Him and paul have a tendency to double team people to: like whoever they come at wont have a chance to say anything cause as soon as one of them pauses the other jumps in to just dog on the person who annoyed them. Some of his insults get pretty creative as well: so if he says something to you thats just out of pocket,like 85% of the time its one of the ones that makes you stop to think about it before you can even get offended 🤣 Strange enough, though. He is very well spoken and charismatic when you talk to him normally. When talking, you notice after a while that he's not one of those folks that cuss every other sentence. Like he will throw it in there like everyone does, but not all the time if you feel me Idk how to describe it. he still talks like a normal person and uses slang and stuff, but he is oddly classy vocabulary wise. He's got a slightly softer tone to his voice as well, which makes his way of speaking come off smoother. He's also extremely smart. Having conversations with him is never really dull or unpleasant. (Unless you're an unlucky boardwalk asshole) Marko is very imaginative and creative. He never stops coming up with things. He hoards hobbies like a dragon hoard gold. From painting to sewing to cooking to wood carving, He just knows how to do this stuff, and he loves it. You will never catch him doing nothing. Even when he's spaced out at the wall, the dude is fiddling with something or sewing. Something together, he just can't stop. He loves giving gifts to friends as well. All of the boys have gifts from Marko that he's made himself. Mostly cause he loves showing off he has skill and unlike Paul he doesn't care if people touch his stuff so he will drag you around his space handing you stuff and showing you everything he's made/ collected cause he's just so proud. Just don't break it. He will be fucking pissed if You break it. Or if you give away anything he gifted you. Also he will talk to you about this stuff for hours on end if you let him (Do let him. He will love you for life if you show Intrests in the things he likes) his space is really cluttered. But looking around, it's mostly albums,art, fabric,patches, and various random objects.

other then that he's really clean. On that note He does not like getting covered in blood when he eats just sayin. He's like the least messy eater of the group mainly cause he hates getting it on his jacket. Plus the texture of dried blood on him makes him want to rip his skin off. It's just one of those things he can't stand So he makes sure to clean up fast. That doesn't mean he doesn't like toying with victims though he's a jumpscare master. He likes to scare his victims half to death before beating the shit outta them. He jokes that hes “tenderizing The meat”. When he does this He gets a kick outta that one. Oh he also likes music, he's not like overly into it though He likes alot of different types as well. Some of his favorite generas are Rock,goth,classical, and some 30s jazz strange enough. He does not give a DAMN what the others have to say about his music taste. if He wants to play his music it will be loud and proud. If they don't like it they are free To take it up with him. (They never will)

1 year! One whole year of daily doodles!!

Honestly?? Idk how to feel, so much has happened since I first started this blog.

I guess I’ll just write what I’m thinking right now??

A lot of this text probably isn’t going to make sense. I’m writing this at 1 am. If there’s any mistakes or errors that’s why. I’ll fix them in the morning maybe.

So like. This whole thing kinda started as a joke, I wasn’t intending to actually draw for a year straight lmao. Like I even used a completely different art style from my regular one that was simple, quick and intentionally dumb. Not that I’m upset by it, I’m actually quite proud of myself that I managed to stick to something for an entire year. That’s pretty unusual for me believe it or not. My original intention was to stop at maybe 20 days because I really wasn’t expecting for this blog to get as much love as it did.

So, from the bottom of my heart, thank you so so much to everyone who has followed and supported this silly little idea I had, you guys are the biggest reason my experience has been so positive and worth it. (Sure it’s not original but I hope it’s at least been interesting!)

I’ve said this a few times now but I’ve mentioned wanting to take a break. I’ll admit that even though it’s been fun it’s still pretty tiring to keep up with this blog sometimes since some recent life events have made it so hard. After some thought, I’ve decided that I’ll likely take a break sometime in the coming months. Maybe toward day 400 or so. As of right now, things are at a lull so I’ve been okay enough mentally and physically to keep up this daily streak I think. Though this could change in an instant for whatever reason.

Overall I think my burnout has kind of gone away I think?? Or at least I’ve been reinvigorated recently after replaying a few runs of hk randomizer and steel soul. No promises it’ll stay away but I silly expect it to come in waves.

Ok but call me crazy or delusional or whatever, but my hopes are up that Silksong will release this year. (which means slowing down/not doing daily doodles yay) I genuinely believe big news is coming since I’ve been getting a lot of dreams lately about something happening with Silksong in March. Idk, I could be wrong but after doing this for a year I’m literally clinging onto anything right now lol

I’d obviously still make the occasional doodle or two when HKSS releases but not daily. This stuff is tough to keep up sometimes, I would never do daily posts like this again once it’s over

Oh yeah also I have an actual big drawing I’m still working on, expect that in sometime in the next few weeks I think!

Anyway, I can’t think of anything else to say right now so I guess that’s it for now!
