This is from a 1900 U.S. census record from Acadia Parish, Louisiana.

"Lavergne, Julien—Refused permittance into his house. He even would not let me come near his house. I did repeatedly told him he would put himself liable to a fine of $100 if he insisted to refuse to giving me the required information, he replied he knowed me. That I had [...] him once too high and he don't care what would happen. There he commenced talking about his shotgun and whipping me if I would came across the [gulley>ditch?] and I left.

I would also respectfully report that I started out on Monday July the 2nd to finish [...] my district but got only 4 miles from Crowley "my residence" when a [billion?] attack of fever took me and I had to return home and called on Doctor N. B. Morris for treatment. I have been confined in bed 4 days and got up to write this report and to send off my Scheduler but could not finish it. I had to lay in bed again.

Mini Jukebox Bing Crosby Junior Juke Negli anni ’40 il jukebox faceva parte della cultura americana a tal punto che anche i bambini avevano un apparecchio personale. Il 20 novembre del 1948 la Ideal Novelty & Toy Company di New York presentò Bing Crosby Junior Juke e Santa Claus avrebbe quindi portato in dono un jukebox a molti bambini. Questo giradischi con il mobile in latta decorato da decalcomanie, era illuminato con lampadine ad intermittenza, contenute in plastiche di resina fenolica marmorizzata. Il design e la progettazione venivano realizzati dalla Bing Crosby Research Foundation e il prezzo al dettaglio era di circa 30 dollari. Il giradischi contenuto in questo involucro (che ricordava dunque il jukebox dei grandi) suonava dischi a 78 giri, era equipaggiato con un amplificatore, a due valvole, e con un altoparlante a 4 pollici. Sulla plastica frontale, illuminata, era collocata la manopola rossa per l’accensione e la regolazione del volume. The other day I visited the thrift shop and picked up an old record album called ‘Sound of Wasps’. When I got home and played it I realized it didn’t sound anything like wasps! Turns out I’d been playing the Bee side.
