Actors and directors hold placards reading #FreeSentsov during an appeal on behalf of Oleg Sentsov, a Ukrainian film director, at the end of the premiere of "Class Act: East-West" in Kiev on July 3rd 2018.
Since our last update Mr Sentsov has continued his hunger strike, demanding the release of all 64 Ukrainian political prisoners held in Russia. Today is the 80th consecutive day that Oleg Sentsov, a vocal opponent of Russia’s 2014 annexation of Crimea, has refused food. He was arrested at his home in Simferopol in May 2014. According to Amnesty International members of the FSB, Russia's Federal Security Service, put a plastic bag over his head and suffocated him until he passed out before removing him and transporting him to Russia for trial. They threatened him with rape and murder to force him to “confess” to organising “terrorist acts”. Mr Sentsov has always maintained his innocence. No single piece of evidence was presented to the court to prove Mr Sentsov’s personal involvement. The case against him should have collapsed when the key prosecution witness stated in court that he had testified against Mr Sentsov under duress. Instead Mr Sentsov received a 20-year prison sentence, being served in Siberia. His lawyer told the Associated Press that Mr Sentsov is receiving nutrients intravenously and drinking water. He is very weak and has lost more than 20kgs (44lbs) in weight. Russia was suspended from membership of the G8 over its invasion and annexation of Crimea. Crimean filmmaker Oleg Sentsov has been convicted to 20 years in Russian jail on false charges of terrorism as he opposed Russian annexation of Crimea. Almost three months ago he began a hunger strike demanding the release not for himself, but for all 64 Ukrainian political prisoners in Russia. Oleg’s imminent death is rapidly approaching if there’s no action as his condition is critical.
European parliament has already appealed to Vladimir Putin for immediate liberation of Oleg Sentsov and others. Now it is time for America to speak up. We urge our government to take a firm stance on this issue and use all leverage to demand immediate release of Oleg Sentsov and other Ukrainian political prisoners in Russia.

Since our last update President Macron has again raised the plight of Oleg Sentsov, a Ukrainian film director, with President Putin. According to a statement from the Élysée Palace, in a telephone call with Mr Putin on August 10th 2018 “The President of the Republic conveyed to President Putin his concerns, given that the health of Mr Sentsov seems to have worsened dangerously, and the importance that Russia urgently finds a humanitarian solution to the situation.” On the same day the European Union also made a representation to the Kremlin on behalf of Mr Sentsov. Today is the 92nd day of his hunger strike, demanding that Russia releases all 64 Ukrainian political prisoners. He was arrested in May 2014 in Crimea after protesting the Russian invasion and sentenced to serve 20 years in a Siberian penal colony on trumped-up charges of “terrorism”. Mr Sentsov is surviving on water and intravenous drip of nutrients. His lawyer reports that he has now lost around 30kgs (66lbs) and his health is deteriorating. A shopfront in Kiev is displaying posters in support of Oleg Sentsov, a Ukrainian film director whose hunger strike is now entering its 60th day. Mr Sentsov is serving a 20-year sentence in a penal colony in Labytnangi, Siberia, having been convicted on trumped-up charges of terrorism. He began his hunger strike on May 14th 2018, demanding that Russia release all 64 Ukrainian political prisoners. Their names are listed on the poster on the right.
Since our last update, Mr Sentsov has been permitted to see his cousin for the first time in four years. After the visit Natalya Kaplan said “In particular, he asked Ombudsman Denisova, Father Kliment, the independent doctors, and consular officials who have tried to visit him to go visit the other political prisoners, so that no one forgets them,”. She said he has lost 15 kilograms (about 33lbs) but is determined to continue his protest. The European Parliament passed a resolution demanding the immediate release of Oleg Sentsov and all Russia's other Ukrainian political prisoners on June 14th 2018. Oleg Sentsov, a Ukrainian film director is still on hunger strike in a prison camp in Siberia. Since we last posted an update Mr Sentsov, an ethnically Russian-Ukrainian citizen, has continued to refuse food and demand the release of all 64 Ukrainian political prisoners from Russian jails. Today marks the 47th day he has gone without food. Mr Sentsov was born in Crimea and considered it to be part of the Ukrainian state that emerged from the Soviet collapse in 1991. (Nearly every country apart from Russia shares this view.) He was in Crimea in 2014 when Russian soldiers in plain uniform staged a coup there, an action for which Russia was suspended from the G8 group of nations. Oleg Sentsov attended a protest against the annexation and helped deliver food to besieged Ukrainian soldiers. He was seized by Russian security services and taken to Russia where he was charged with “terrorism”. In 2015 he received a 20-year sentence for supposedly plotting to blow up a statue of Lenin and set fire to a door in the Crimean office of Russia’s ruling party. Lenin’s statue was not blown up, and no one was injured in the fire. Mr Sentsov was innocent—the main witness said he had been forced to give false testimony, and withdrew his statement in court. Ukrainian residents demonstrate in support of Mr Sentsov on June 23rd 2018 in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. Oleg Sentsov, a Ukrainian film director, is now on day 30 of his hunger strike. Mr Sentsov was arrested in Crimea on May 11th 2014 by Russia’s Federal Security Service (FSB). He was accused of being involved with a terrorist cell (allegedly plotting to blow up a statue of Lenin) in Crimea. Mr Sentsov’s real offence was to oppose Russia’s annexation of his native Crimea, helping deliver food to Ukrainian soldiers trapped on their bases after the Russian invasion. At trial in 2015 he was sentenced to 20 years in prison. Supporters held a rally "For a free Russia without repression and arbitrariness" in Moscow, Russia on June 10th 2018.
