Dungeon Meshi Chapter 37
I don't think harpies are the actual focus this chapter
Last chapter, Kabru was attempting to sweet-talk Laios so he could find stuff out about him. But now that Laios has admitted to committing a crime that will make him an international criminal, Kabru's next move was to smooth talk his way into getting on Shuro's side.
At some point, Laios did manage to tell Shuro that Kensuke is a monster.
I don't think Kabru plans on telling anyone about what Laios's party did. He understands that Laios is a good person but either doesn't understand the consequences of his actions or doesn't see why he has to follow arbitrary rules. However, Kabru will probably try to use the knowledge as a bargaining chip. He wants Marcille to know that he knows.
Does magic leave some light residue traces on the staff or is it something like certain growths could only have happened because Marcille used black magic?
The harpies falling in the background during Marcille and Chilchuck's conversation is a funny event. It stops being funny when Hien is the one who falls.
Leave it to Laios to see the situation and think Falin looks super cool.
I think Falin is supposed to be a hybrid of her body, the red dragon, and whatever type of dragon this is from the title image.
The red dragon didn't have wings and navigating the fifth floor was difficult for it because it could barely walk through the streets. Giving her wings would let her more easily traverse this and the fourth floor if necessary.
Falin body overall seems to be smaller than the red dragon's. At the very least, she's likely much lighter than it since she can stand on the rooftops. It probably would help with navigating the dungeon, because again it had a hard time walking through the streets.
Falin's human body is also bigger than before. She's wearing Laios's spare shirt and it was originally too big on her. But now it's very tight on her. Compare her to this panel from chapter 28:
I remember how everyone was excitedly talking about Falin breasting boobily when this scene was animated.
Oh sure, Holm is allowed to have an undine combat familiar, but when Laios keeps a living armor in his sword....
Marcille has trauma.
The spell Falin used to kill the undine was definitely some form of ancient magic, but the characters she spoke were more similar to the characters Marcille uses in her normal magic. It would be interesting if modern alphabets are modifications of the ancient language alphabet. Maybe they even used the same general incantations, but used a different magic formula to define where the mana comes from.
Falin and Laios had dogs growing up. I want to say that this moment was Falin's human self influencing the dragon to want to pet Kuro.
"It's just a monster" is becoming a recurring phrase. Laios and Senshi both love monsters and wish they could live in harmony with them and nature. And they both nearly lost their lives because they put their trust in Kensuke and Anne and were betrayed.
Falin has gone one step beyond that and actually become a monster. Laios wishes this meant he could reason with her, but she's just a monster.
I want to argue that this panel was in Laios's head. He's trying to steel himself to kill a monster that looks like his little sister, but when he sees her face, he sees the person who would call him "big brother Laios."
Again, everything about Kabru's fighting style screams "Assassin". He literally took off his armor so he could sneak up on Falin unnoticed. And at minimum, Rin knows that's what he is because she was casting magic as a diversion.

Dungeon Meshi Sexuality Headcanons
Pre-warnings:
—SPOILERS FOR THE MANGA. I’ve finished reading the whole thing, and I’m not gonna worry about censoring. Read at your own peril!
—I multiship sometimes, and in a similar vein, I have multiple sexuality headcanons. These are the just the main vibes they give me currently.
THIS IS BY NO MEANS meant to be an objective thing. I am *totally* fine with people having different headcanons. The series ended with no sexualities confirmed, and there’s room for different headcanons even IF there were confirmed sexualities. Stories are not meant to be exclusive.
—I’m using the term pansexual to mean interest in all genders, with gender not really making a difference; and bisexual to mean interest in all genders, but gender does make a difference. I have heard this as a definition, but I’m sure not everyone uses it this way. I’m sorry if I got something wrong.
—I’m queer myself, but that doesn’t prevent me from making mistakes, so I’m really sorry if I worded something weirdly. I’m very open to corrections.
Laios: aroace spectrum, straight
I see him as mostly totally aro, and still on the ace spectrum but just a bit higher (or is it lower?). Partly this is based on the succubus scene. Partly this is just vibes.
I can see him deciding as a king that marrying and having heirs is important, and so marrying a woman who is independent enough that she would be ok with a mostly platonic relationship. He’d probably really enjoy infrequent sex with her, and they’d be best friends who each had their own stuff going on.
I’m not entirely sure why he seems on the straight side to me, but he does.
(I recently read someone on Reddit talking about how Laios marrying the orc woman would be cool, and I now have a new rarepair. I know the orc woman wasn’t into it, but maybe if she could maintain her independence, she’d enjoy it.)
Falin: gay
Partly based on her resolute rejection of Shuro, who is quite a handsome fellow. (Obviously rejecting a handsome man doesn’t make you gay. It’s just one of the things that gives her a gay vibe to me.) Partly it’s her attitude towards Marcille. Although she isn’t my favourite character, I do see a fair bit of myself in Falin, so her being queer makes sense to me.
Chilchuck: straight
I quite like the Chilchuck/Senshi ship as well, so sometimes I like to headcanon him as bi. But honestly, most of the time he seems like an ordinary straight dude to me, especially in the succubus scene with the never ending stream of hot blondes.
Marcille: bisexual
There’s her succubus (a man) and her attitude towards Falin (a woman). I actually kind of think she leans straight, but if the right woman comes along (*cough* Falin), she’d fall deeply.
Senshi: demisexual, pansexual
He’s a tough one for me. I feel like he has the potential for a deep, slow relationship with the right person, but he’d mostly be ok without that. The pansexual part is mostly coming from some Lord of the Rings fanfics I read cantering around dwarves, where gender expression is pretty identical between male and female dwarves, and gender doesn’t seem to matter for most of them. I know this isn’t the world of Dungeon Meshi, but some of that seems to have crept into my imagination, because it influenced my headcanon of Senshi. Partly because of this, and partly because of the boob touching scene, I sometimes have a trans headcanon for him as well.
Izutsumi: aroace (with a straight cat side)
Her succubus scene seemed to say that her cat side had sexual attraction and her human side didn’t. But I think she’s too human to actually want to be with a total cat, and I think even another half beast person would be utterly uninteresting for her human side.
But for some reason, the cat that the succubus disguised itself as seemed male to me (did it actually specify? I don’t remember), so there’s like, the tiniest hint of straightness in her.
Kabru: bisexual
I see him charming the pants off both men and women and enjoying both equally. I don’t think he would go at it the same way with different genders though, and don’t see him as pan. I think he has a great capacity for friendship too, though. I mean, all the characters do. It’s a really important part of the manga. But there’s something about Kabru that I can’t quite articulate, in how I see romance, sex, and friendship interacting for him. (Maybe one day I’ll figure out how to articulate it and edit this post.)
Mithrun: past bisexual, current demisexual and pansexual
He’s an interesting case. I believe that when he lost his desires, he lost his general desires for sex and romance, just like he lost his general desire for food/sleep/etc. However, just like it’s inferred he can grow new desires for specific foods like noodles, I believe he could grow specific desires for specific people now. But he’d never be attracted to someone right off the bat, without getting attached to them slowly. Basically the textbook definition of demi. And pansexual just in the sense that he lost any gender-specific desires. Some of that could grow a bit, though, if he fell for someone.
I have no reason for thinking past Mithrun was bi, it’s just vibes, and I like the headcanon.
Minor characters:
—Shuro: straight
Because of his interest in Falin, and he just seems straight to me. I enjoy shipping him with Laios sometimes, though. Every character has potential for hidden bisexuality, for me. :)
—Namari: gay
I think she’s cool and I’d like her to be gay, plus I like the ship with her and Kiki.
—Lycion: bi
He seems jealous of Kabru with Mithrun, and calls Mithrun handsome. I could see just gay as well. But I like the ship with him and Fleki, and bi would fit well. I also feel like the body dysmorphia stuff he has going on would fit well with being trans.
—Cithis: gay
No good reason. Just selfish. She’s super hot and I want her to be gay. I don’t think she’d have an aversion to sex with men, though. It just wouldn’t be her preference.
If anyone wants to share their headcanons, feel free to reblog with them! I’d love to hear other perspectives!!

Saw a post about what the various Dungeon Meshi characters are like in bed and it was just...so deeply wrong. Like, I'm sorry, but just because a character has many good traits in day to day life does NOT mean they're just automatically going to be great in bed.
DunMeshi is the show for loving cringefail idiots who are trying their best (and sometimes managing to get there)
Anyway, here's my take:
Marcille - wants to be good in bed and is trying very hard to be sexy but has internalized way too many romance novels AND way too much social stigma about sex to be really uninhibited in bed. The experience will be fine but you come away from it feeling like there was something missing. Figuring out that she's attracted to women will help her a lot because she won't have a bunch of predetermined, socially mandated sexual roles to fall back on and will have to get creative.
Laios - doesn't think about having sex a lot for himself (he definitely does think about it but he's clearly got a somewhat childish sensibility regarding it) but definitely down if someone else initiates...and is very specific about what they're trying to get him to do. Lots of enthusiasm but zero technique. Willing to put a lot of things in his mouth though, so that's useful. Absolutely down to try whatever physical kink you have, basically without question, but probably bounces hard off of D/s dynamics and similar social role playing for the most part. Pet play is too tame, but will definitely pretend to be a tiger erotically stalking you through the jungle if you're into that.
Chilchuck - I'm sorry, I know everyone loves Mr. Tims but he sucks in bed. "But he has three kids". Lots of people who suck in bed have lots of kids. It's called "societal pressure to have children". Chilchuk's defining (marriage ending!!!) features are that he's emotionally unavailable and tends to overwork himself, which is not a recipe for being a great lover. His one saving grace is that he's good with his hands. Unfortunately, he's not interested in foreplay so that's wasted on him.
Senshi - Likewise, I know we all love dwarf daddy but he ALSO sucks in bed, but for different reasons. Firstly, he's NOTABLY UNWASHED, to the point that magic doesn't work on him, so unless you're really into body odor and related kinks, that's really going to put a damper on things. More importantly, this man has a long history of being isolated from society. Senshi is kind of defined by his desire to be close to people and take care of them, but he's really never had an opportunity to form the kind of long-term, stable relationships that could lead to sexual exploration. (Yes, he was with the orcs for a while but I suspect he was never integrated into the tribe enough for that kind of exploration to take place - when he started getting close to that level, he left because he didn't want to get married) I just straight up don't think he's had a lot of experience in that regard and I think he would be kind of shy. However, since he does like taking care of people, he'd be open to direction and probably a quick learner. You gotta put in the work to teach him though, he's not coming to you with a lot of experience.
Falin - Yeah okay, she's into some weird shit and not shy about it. However, it's not in a defined or specific kink kind of way, she's just very willing to be open about enjoying sensations or experiences that other people might think were weird. If you're down to clown with this dynamic, you'll have a great time. If not, you'll discover midway through fucking that she's stopped paying attention to what you're doing and is watching an ant trying to carry a crumb through a hole in the wall next to the bed. She still tells you that you're doing a good job because you're trying so hard, which is far more devastating than being told that you sucked. Shuro - has very defined ideas about How Sex Is Supposed To Go and won't deviate from them. If you like being methodically pounded for over an hour because he can't finish, Shuro is the man for you. However, this is because he has an extremely repressed kink that he's desperate to hide at all costs by never doing anything even slightly deviant. If you can ever get him to admit what that kink is, he will either die of embarrassment or become the best lay you've ever had...so long as you happen to think that kink is hot, because it's definitely the only thing that will really get him off reliably.
Kabru - has been studying your every move and carefully peppering you with seemingly innocuous and non-sexual questions to help him guess what you're into while you were on a date. Phenomenal in bed, very good/giving/game and eager to please - to the point that you actually don't get a chance to do much to him. A rather dazzling experience the first time around but unfortunately you quickly realize that he has bespoke brain problems that are beyond your ken and is obsessed with some oblivious blond guy. You end up sleeping with him a few more times and keep getting the feeling that he's working an angle but it's hard to say what that angle is, because sex is clearly not the end game of the 5 dimensional chess that he's playing.

Yeah, not going to lie, this is a weird post. Fem!Shuro is blushing. Why would she be blushing about harassment? Why would she have a little bubble of Laios that's neutral but Marcille and Falin have bubbles that indicate confusion? And why is it wrong to assume that fem!Shuro would fall for Laios, considering that male!Shuro fell for Falin and it's constantly stated that the siblings are very similar in both looks and personality, but it's okay to assume that Laios would SEXUALLY HARASS fem!Shuro (even if it's by accident)? He never harassed Namari or any other female character, and despite his lack of social skills, he's actually very aware of Marcille as a woman and actively tries not to make her uncomfortable (see: Chapter 34 and Chapter 60).

There's also how he was completely oblivious about the one former party member who was actively pursuing Laios and using him for favors, whom he treated very seriously.
If Shuro was a woman, Laios would simply not be so forward to begin with, so it's absolutely weird to posit that he would be sexually harassing her, just because, I guess, the alternative of fem!Shuro being into him is that terrible? "I can excuse harassment but I draw the line at heterosexuality."?

I’ll be real. nothing annoys me like the assumption that this crying, distressed fem shuro - who’s being comforted by female friends including a VERY shaken falin - simply “fell in love” with laios.
besides this assumption being misogynistic and heterosexual as hell, it’s also fucking stupid. look at this. what about this image screams “I fell in love with a quirked up white boy” ?????
she’s reporting harassment. no I don’t think laios intended to do it. but when a female noble from fantasy japan’s boundaries are crossed so throughly like canon shuro’s were, fem shuro would probably have interpreted it very differently...
“looks like that just made the situation worse…” YEAH NO SHIT LOL

"weird post" because you're taking a small joke panel to say "actually Laios would sexually harass fem!Shuro", which is weird, even weirder that you frame "actually Laios wouldn't harass someone like that" into "you're dicksucking Laios". Saying a character isn't a creep isn't "dick sucking", lol. "shaken with despair" because she's into Laios. Laios was shocked/confused when he learned that Shuro was into Falin. I feel like Marcille would be the one who is MORE horrified than Falin, though they should be both horrified. For that matter, why wouldn't Shuro's own bubble of Laios reflect her own horror? Obviously the point that it is ambiguous what they're talking about, that's the joke, but to jump straight to "he sexually harassed her" and more importantly suggest that thinking the obvious alternative is misogynistic is weird. That is sexual harassment, by the way. If she takes it as sexual harassment, it's sexual harassment. If she is crying SPECIFICALLY BECAUSE she feels like she is treated different and poorly because she is a woman, that is sexual harassment. You couldn't handwave that with "oh, Laios puts his foot in his mouth" like that.
Again, I don't get being okay with Laios being someone who would sexually harass people but NOT okay with a fem!Shuro falling for Laios. It is stated several times that Laios and Falin are very similar people with similar interests. No one is saying they are literally identical. But it's clearly presented as ironic how different they perceived by others despite being two peas in a pod. I don't care about you running Shuro defense (I think he gets too much hate), but no, I'mma say it's weird that you want to frame Laios as being someone who would sexually harass fem!Shuro, despite demonstrating at the very least an awareness of how women don't like to be treated that way. You don't need to paint Laios as a creep to defend Shuro. "Shuro likes Falin because she's considerate" Okay, well, if Shuro were a woman, Laios would be considerate with her. Laios is very compassionate and cares about his crew and even strangers. That's also something they have in common. Outside of that one omake with Zon (which isn't even a misunderstanding on Laios' part), Laios has never been depicted as breaking boundaries with women. Not just because it's not how he acts, but he ACTIVELY tries not to make women uncomfortable. The shift in gender dynamics is EXACTLY why Laios would treat fem!Shuro different from male!Shuro. It is BECAUSE Shuro is a man that Laios is so forward with him, BECAUSE the dynamics are different. I feel at the very worst he would immediately identify fem!Shuro's behavior as him creeping her out and back off immediately. The interaction between fem!Kabru and Laios is different from male!Kabru and Laios.

Why would that not be the case with Shuro?
EDIT: I just remembered this:

which definitely breaches some boundaries but it's also clear that it's because of Laios seeing Izutsumi as more monster than human, and a behavior he obviously would not engage with in a tallman.
