i do a ton of sashiko sewing. Thing is that my aesthetic is very colorful and chaotic so instead of those lovely clean patterns you see online, what I do looks like what a clown would make in the mad max apocalypse: LOTS of different colored threads and fabrics all fused together. My stiches are not even, they are random and upsetting. I know this because I have taken a few sashiko classes and have seen the light go out of the teacher's eyes everytime I showed them my shit

I also have a bad habit of grabbing stuff I want to alter that looks cool but is actually too small, so I hack it apart and Frankenstein it back together in a very deliberately fucked up way to fit me

This stuff feels great and the sashiko stitching makes its feel 1000 times more durable than anything you'd find at stores. Tissue paper jeans I bought 10 years ago at forever 21 now feel like somthing made for sailors to wear while looking like clown desert punk

I'm still not confident about certain things, such as fixing crotch blow out. I took my favorite pair of altered jeans to this tailor recently and told her I just wanted these two rips on the crotch patched. She barely glanced at the neon green jeans and said oh that won't look good and I was like ma'm have you seen the rest of the jeans?

She then actually laid them out and saw my lisa-Frank-enstein jeans and i saw the light go out of her eyes as we stood there in silence

I am not normally super femme but I've been interested in pin up fashion as a way to play dress up in the femme space and have fun with it! Your shoot was goals!! Any tips/places to start?

Pin-up fashion has certainly evolved over the years, and when people think 'pin-up' they actually tend to think of the bombshells of the 1950s, not 40s—you know, swing skirts, wiggle dresses, sweetheart necklines, etc.

This type of fashion has made a comeback in a big way! There are tons of stores out there that cater to this look. Here are some easily accessible ones:

Unique Vintage (probably the cheapest in this list, some good finds!)

Trashy Diva (excellent quality, sizes go up to 24)

Pin Up Girl Clothing (hit or miss)

Be warned: these places tend to be quite expensive (esp. Trashy Diva), although they will hold sales from time to time that will definitely ease the sticker shock!

A good place to start might be simply going to Poshmark or Etsy and searching for "pin up dress/clothing". As long as you know your measurements, you'll be good to go!

Everything I've learned about 1940s/1950s fashion is thanks to one of my best friends, who wears only true vintage clothing, which she gets via thift stores, online trading forums, and Etsy (there are some great vintage stores on there!).

Let's take a quick look at 1940s/50s fashion, starting with said bestie's wedding day in 2017:

She found her dress in a thift store—believe it or not, it was from 1941 and required not a single alteration. She was meant to have that dress.

The bridesmaids' dresses were actually from Trashy Diva and they were extremely well made. Here I am with the maid of honor, accidentally recreating that famous photo of Sofia Loren and Jayne Mansfield:

During the 1940s, because of the war, fashion stalled a little. During the first half of the decade, "utility clothing" was the big thing (silks and nylons were rationed for the war effort, so rayon was used instead). Dresses were characterized by padded shoulders, nipped-in waists, and A-line hems that hit the knee. Tweed and plaid were popular. (x) (x)

Post-war fashion was kicked off by Christian Dior's "New Look," which emphasized the hourglass silhouette and full skirts. Hollywood icons Katherine Hepburn and Lauren Bacall influenced fashion by popularizing wide-legged trousers:

High waisted, wide-legged trousers with a flowy blouse tucked in? The elegance! The utility! The long silhouette! Can't beat it.

The 1950s had a pretty stark gender divide in comparison to the 1940s. Women's fashion in the 50s emphasized elegance and extremely tailored looks to prize tiny waists.

The "house dress"—which has become synonymous with the pin-up—rose in popularity:

Because when you're running errands and taking care of the home, you want to look your best! These dresses boasted even fuller skirts than what we saw in the 40s, plus crossed collars, waist belts, and pockets.

However! That's not to say it was all Leave It To Beaver glam. The denim revolution happened during the 50s, partly influenced by James Dean's jeans-wearing bad boy in Rebel Without A Cause. Teens went crazy for the style, which was banned at most schools.

Anyway, all this to say that there are plenty of resources out there to get you started. 1940s and 50s fashion is so classic and is surprisingly easy to tweak if you'd like it to be more modern, especially since high-rise, wide-legged pants are back in style.

I've been noticing this pattern of people online asking questions to the effect of "where can I buy x?" This might be "where did you get..." "Where can I buy..." "Where is x from?" And so on. And I get where they're coming from, I do. But at the same time (maybe this is just me) this is a result of fast fashion. I see the appeal of being able to hand over money and receive the exact item but PEOPLE PLEASE. You can thrift similar items (or check your current wardrobe) and customize and alter these pieces to be similar to that item you love, but yours will be unique. Yours will be the product of your hands. Yours can be tailored to you.

I hate to sound like an obnoxious grandmother, but the amount of people who have no clue how to sew a button is shocking and disappointing.

I could go on a long rant about capitalism and the mass extinction of practical skills. Or even the loss of said skills being viewed as “women’s work” which were demonized by both men and third wave buzzfeed feminists alike but I would never leave this draft. DO NOT get me started on both parties feeling entitled to your labor when they find out you have a semblance of knowledge.

What I’m saying is that I urge everyone to learn simple garment repair. It’s not expensive and it’s not hard no matter what asshole online tells you otherwise. It doesn’t even need to look nice. I am completely self taught and it all started when I wanted a lanyard that would match my greasy, pre-teen, vampirefreaks.com aesthetic. I made that shit out of left over Christmas ribbons, an old keychain, and rotted thread. And guess what, it was so badass that it inspired me to dig deeper into sewing and diy in general.

There is so much pride in taking care of what you own. What you own is meant to get beat up, so beat it up, fix it, then beat it up again. Your body grows, it shrinks, you expand out, you contract in… That’s how your body works. Deal with it you can’t prevent natural function. Instead of consuming on mass learn to adjust your clothing to your needs!!

Break The Mold Lore | Part 2

The twins end up in Gravity Falls, where anomalies are prevalent. In the basement of the Shack, the twins collaborate with Fiddleford (who temporarily moved into the Shack) to put together a body for William made of cybernetics, Bill assuring the boys that he could alter the appearance to his liking. They’ll still need to get him clothes though, William tailoring them into a dapper yellow suit that matches the body's measurements.

They carve symbols into the main structure and all of the limbs, building off of it in layers. By the time they’re both in their thirties Ford has six phd's, the Mystery Shack is open and the body is complete, the Stan twins firing up the power source –which is the same blue energy as the portal– to bring the body online and merge it with William. They’re successful, though William is disoriented at first.

William’s color changes from yellow to blue in his new body, using his own bottomless well of energy to keep it stable and functioning. His eyes are yellow with blue pupils.

There’s an adjustment period of several weeks, William getting used to his new body as the Stan twins keep him safely tucked away in the basement with Ford while Stan runs the Mystery Shack for income.

William’s left eye keeps shorting out, which Ford concludes is due to him being a one-eyed being, so he subconsciously rejects both eyes. To solve this issue, Bill just gives himself a scar that seals the eye shut.

When Mabel and Dipper (Mason) are born, Ford and Stan go see them with Bill, who Ford introduces as a family-friend from college.

When they return to Gravity Falls, the Stan twins decide to settle down there, going sailing during the winter months since tourism grinds to a halt.

The Stan twins make an additional deal with Bill, allowing their physical appearance to age but keeping their body in their prime. Bill can age them up or down as he pleases, pretty much making them immortal.

Years pass like this, the Pines twins coming to visit in the summer for the first time and eventually discovering William’s true identity as a dream demon, the Pines twins and Soos trying to banish him from the physical plane thinking that he’s a threat. Ford and Stan stop them just in time, explaining the situation.

if her family loves her, maki can’t tell. her parents have no expectations of her, don’t care what she does with her time or her life, their eyes too busy chasing after miwa. how is your sister? have you talked to her lately? tell her to call us back more often. we worry, you know! and her sister, miwa, is nice, is lively, is more important than maki could ever be. to everyone else, maki orbits miwa like an insignificant star. if her sister loves her, she should do it in a way that hurts less.

maki grows up hungry, the black hole in her stomach aching for the love she thinks she’s been deprived of. she kisses people like she’s trying to find something, and when they inevitably disappoint her, unable to fill that pit in her stomach, she finds someone else to try and satisfy that monstrous hunger. she leaves behind a trail of broken hearts, but only a select few in marrow can tell maki is driven not by her hunger, but really her greed. the rest see only her sweet smile, her syrupy words, the shiny pink of her lips, and think she’s just a girl with a want for love. who could blame her for that?

to most, maki is characterised by her sweetness. not especially kind, like her sister, but sweet. flattering. charming. when she curls her lips and bats her lashes, she is the picture of innocence. her fickle nature should get her in trouble more often, if not for her ability to charm her way out of consequence. and if you look hard enough, deep enough, it won’t be difficult to find the rot under all the perfume and the lip gloss. maki just knows how to tame the beast of her anger into something palatable, the monster of her hunger into something pretty. all the pink is a disguise as much as it is armour.

seamstress/designer/perfumer/entrepreneur?: while she doesn't have an office or proper working hours, she has her sewing machine and an eye for aesthetics. what started as a hobby when she was young—altering her own clothes to look cuter, to fit the image of what she had in mind perfectly—turned into something of a skill. she starts with the town, fixing up the holes in her dad's sweater, patching up her mom's old dresses, tailoring trousers for a classmate when they don't fit right, before she eventually ventures online. now she has her own website where she sells not only custom pieces of clothing, but also homemade fragrances like perfumes and essential oils. it's not enough to say she's making a fortune, but she's definitely making more than enough to be comfortable (and to afford to splurge on designer clothing once in a while).

under the horror, there was a surfacing dread that wore the face of maki’s sister. they buried her just before the new year, just before the deaths started in earnest, before maki started pencilling in funerals to attend every other day. when the dead came back, maki’s heart stopped for one brief moment. not you, she thought, as she stared out into the fog that blanketed the town. not you not you not you not you. her parents clutched each other’s hands like a lifeline, alternating between praying and begging for the daughter they preferred to crawl out of her grave. the anger simmered under maki's skin, disfiguring her grief into something unrecognisable. she kept visiting her sister’s grave, not out of love, like the town thought, but to tell her stay in there. stayintherestayintherestayinthere. miwa matsui died too early, to no one but maki’s relief.

maki was a sister the moment she was born. it was a title she never asked for, shackles she would try to break free of for the rest of her life. maki was younger and sweeter and prettier, but what did that matter when miwa was older, and kinder, and braver? maki learned to be jealous of her sister before she learned to love her, so maybe that’s why when the world took miwa on a cold, winter night—maki’s first, most traitorous thought, was of relief. miwa matsui, beloved daughter, sister, mother and wife—dies in december. she leaves behind her parents, her younger sister, her husband, and her son. be careful what you wish for. maki’s parents can’t stand to look at her; she, who seems to blossom in the absence of her sister. the town keeps its eyes on her, not knowing what to make of this girl who used to be one of two, this little sister who they barely noticed from under the shadow of the older. (at night, maki keeps waking up from dreams where she is the one driving the car, where she sees her sister standing in the middle of the road and presses down on the gas. in the morning she wakes up with tears in the corners of her eyes, the guilt overwhelming the grief, but not enough to cover up the relief that still beats so steadily under her breastbone.)

the matsuis were told their chances of getting pregnant were slim to none on a friday. a month later, hiroko finds she's somehow, impossibly, with child. not only is motoi overjoyed, but so is the rest of the town after having seen the matsuis through their harrowing journey of starting a family. when the baby is born, she's dubbed miracle miwa matsui, the gift that no one saw coming. (when maki follows two years after, there is less fanfare, less applause. she wasn't the miracle baby, after all.)

miwa grows up gleaming, grows up laughing. miracle miwa matsui, who tries to rescue every stray cat she comes across, who can befriend even the most prickly of children, who shines so brightly not even her little sister can come close. (someone tells maki once, when she is seven, that she is lucky to have miwa as a sister. lucky. no one has ever told her parents they were lucky to have her. no one.)

the town cheers when miwa is born, and the town cries when miwa dies. to maki, it looks as if the entire population of marrow has shown up to her sister's funeral. she sobs miserably, heart wrenchingly, unpretty in a way she usually refuses to show, because she understands her own funeral could never look like this, because under the heartbreak there is the inferno of her anger.

the last thing miracle miwa matsui does is step in front of a car to protect her son. she dies a hero, she dies loved, and leaves behind a little sister who could never ever hope to fill her shoes.

Jun's Intuos2 XD-608-U Review

Since I couldn't find many online and I think its fun to talk about. (This is a personal review, general info can be found here)

From 2001, this tablet boasted 1024 pen/eraser/tilt pressure levels, much less than the average of most modern tablets. While noticeable in feel, I'm not a stickler for detail or line variation so it better suits my personal taste. The matte surface has a moderate amount of friction while being very smooth, making drawing feel nicely hefty and direct compared to what I'm used to. The proportions fit a 4:3 display but can be adjusted in the driver. Small movements will cover a larger amount of distance on a higher aspect ratio but the feeling is up to taste (I had an Intuos3 with similar measurements on a 16:9 display and I might've just gotten used to it). The material is nice and dense, the tablet tends to suction itself to flat surfaces after a while and doesn't move easily. the pen stand and cord/battery-less mouse also have soft bases to prevent slipping and scratching!

A menu strip is on top with editable functions in the driver. It shows what number you're hovering over onscreen so you don't have to look down. (Its a bit tricky to feel out though, so I look anyway ^^;)

The last 3 buttons are pressure settings that alter your pen sensitivity, you can also fine tune them in the driver. Selecting "firm" makes clicks harder to register, but it can be fixed by sliding the "Click Threshold" left. Before and after:

The 2D mouse works by dragging it over the tablet, It tends to skip when slowly dragging due to the friction of the fabric and hard surface and doesn't have any particularly unique features. I suggest a regular mouse and pad for smoother navigation instead.

Overall, Its a wonderful relic of the early digital art scene that still holds up quite well for its early creation. IMO its one of the nicest feeling tablets I've used, its very much tailored to my personal use. I think I'll be sticking with this in the far future!

at some point i'm going to crumble and try to get people online who know about clothing construction to advise me about whether tailoring could successfully adjust the wedding dresses i'm looking at to fit me and give a desirable effect that doesn't alter the appearance too much. but not yet. i'm holding out

i made the mistake of buying a new pair of jeans online (every time i buy anything new i regret it, between ecological and labour reasons + nothing ever fitting me the way i want it to, i'm always annoyed unless i make the garment myself) and despite checking the size guide and measurements and everything they were extremely big on me but i'm determined to make them work so i spent yesterday altering them to shave off 5 inches from the waistband and take the legs in a bit and now they fit perfectly. it was a pain in the ass though because i don't have my sewing machine with me so i had to do it all by hand and trying to sew through several layers of thick denim by hand sucked. but they look and fit well now, and when i have access to my sewing machine again i can fix up a few things so they'll look Professionally Tailored lol

(side note, getting dirk to build the body of a woman is a guaranteed way to not end up with the obligatory "android woman has to be sexy" look (im looking at you, 2B) since he seems pretty averse to womens sexuality. if that makes sense.) but like hal could just have her perfect body tailor made from arguably the most reliable possible source on the matter. as a trans person myself, id kill for a kickass robot body to upload my consciousness into that represents my gender identity perfectly. hal deserves it.
