the sun is not aware of the rituals we participate in every time it completes its cycle, any more than it is aware of our own cycles, repeated interminably as we swear to ourselves over and over that we will abandon them in the coming year.

this is the year i change, we say, write, declare, whisper to ourselves at midnight while everyone else is kissing, dancing, drinking, cheering. and inevitably, we do. change transpires with or without your permission.

throughout our lives we will watch as the scenery, soundtrack, characters shift and change around us. we will learn that some changes are temporary, and some stay with you like a chronic illness, hanging on even on the good days, living in your spinal fluid even when you thought you were rid of it. like the memory of your first love, or someone you lost that you thought would be around for this part.

and then there are changes that find you through a crack of light in the hole you thought had swallowed you, its tendrils tracing the lines of your bones in the dark, whispering a name you’ve never heard but swear you know because it feels like a home that doesn’t taste like regret.
