Why does The Lord Whose Domain is Sallow Embers have so many epithets? It seems that every time I think about him his name changes!

For those not aware, the Yellow Circle is an Outsider cult that the Office has an extensive history of cooperating with, and the deity they worship is known as The Golden Sleeper. You might notice that whenever he’s referred to, his name is replaced by a different epithet.

I once asked my friend, Yth’Wa, the Herald of Change about this. She said, in her flowery way, that the name of the Shepherd-King of the Amber Abyss is “too holy” to be spoken in our plane. Supposedly, it can be spoken in the Dreamlands or in the Void, but I haven’t been to either myself.

Now, being pretty agnostic, I asked around about that. The most likely theory is a sort of linguistic phenomenon - although many members of the Yellow Circle adopt names from their holy texts (like Yth’Wa), those are kind of the closest human phonetics get to the actual pronunciation. For your average fishman it doesn’t matter much, but the idea of the Monarch Below The Horizon is “too big” to be referred to in shorthand like that. A totally alien concept like that doesn’t “fit” in our noosphere, it’s a completely different psychic environment.

I read some historical papers once about the Office’s involvement with the Circle. Our first contact with them in the….20s, 30s was named Voices of the Many, and apparently he had the ability to say something close enough to His Pelagic Majesty’s actual name to cause local reality to destabilize.
