Having depressing Steve Harrington Whump thoughts this sunny Sunday morning.

I usually headcanon Steve's parents as being neglectful and absent given their lack of screen presence in the show and thought about Steve grappling with this throughout his childhood.

Being left alone for days and eventually weeks at a time, starting much younger than was appropriate, but it was the era of latchkey kids and Richard and Darleen Harrington assumed Steve was capable enough to not really need watching. The house never burned down.

Their son was fine.

And Steve would be the first person to agree, to smile wanely while the migraines pounded in his head, a parting gift from Billy Hargrove and the and Russians. He was fine.

It was fine.

Until the spring of 1986 when all Hell literally broke loose.

During the last events of the Upside Down and the earthquakes that almost decimated Hawkins, the Harringtons finally come back to town, horrified to be called in from Indianapolis by the charge nurse at Hawkins General Hospital.

Their relationship does get a little better after nearly losing their only son. They don't talk about it, the lost years of quality time, but Steve has made begrudging peace with it and is happy to have them around now for family dinners and the holidays.

They are even fairly good about his relationship with Eddie once he finally comes out. Richard takes a little longer to warm up to the idea, but Darleen seems determined not to lose Steve again.

And things are fine for awhile, the four of them have found an equilibrium amongst each other. Richard busies himself with offering to help with repairs around their house as needed, the leaky sink in their guest bath or the backdoor that was never hung correctly. While Darleen is always quick to bring over a new recipe for them all to try at the next family dinner.

They don't talk about the fact that this is the most home cooking Steve has ever experienced in his 30 years of life or that he didn't know his dad even owned a screwdriver.

But it's fine.

They manage.

It's only after the adoption of their daughter that Steve begins to notice the changes in his parents in a way that makes his chest feel tight.

"I just, I don't get it," Steve says quietly to Eddie one summer day. Richard and Darleen are out in the yard with Abigail, playing in the sun. Abigail shakes a flower from the garden in Richard's face while he pretends to sneeze exaggeratedly, making Abigail break into peals of laughter.

Eddie frowns at Steve, watching as he crosses his arms tightly around himself.

"There has to be something going on, it doesn't make any sense how they're being with her," Steve bites out eventually. He lifts a trembling hand to his hair and tugs harshly at the roots.

"Okay woah woah," Eddie says slowly as he stops forward and gently coaxes Steve's hands away from his hair, "Stevie, sweetheart, I don't understand".

Eddie watches as Steve's gaze travels out the window once more to see Darleen lift their giggling baby girl above her head before lowering Abigail to pepper kisses all over her cheeks. Eddie smiles at the sight but it quickly vanishes as he looks back at Steve who is looking longingly at his mother.

"Because," Steve says, his voice catches on the growing lump in his throat, "if they were always capable of this, of being there, then why couldn't they do that for me?"

There are some things that keep us alive, and there are some things that make life worth living, and I think games are one of those things that fall into both categories. Games make our lives better and they make us better at being alive. I think that's pretty cool.

learning that test me by 4eve is basically chian and bua's song (his RINGTONE for bua?????) contextualises chian choosing that particular song to sing with fourmod and his band bc when you're first watching ep 2 you're thinking it's this cute chian/fourmod moment but now knowing that it's chian's song for BUA and that bua was in the fucking crowd watching and filming them perform it (also fourmod having no idea what that song means to chian and clearly singing those lyrics to chian specifically)...my heart hurts for everyone here tbh 😭😭😭 and the fact that it's only gonna get WORSE when baabin and bua become more and more involved in this whole tangled love square oh boy...........

looking at someone's translations of map of dreams. the idea that sorcerer liu xiao deals with "equivalent exchange" and applies "mental control on liars" and doesn't like being deceived. hmmmmmm

still not debunking my previous read on liu xiao, which is that he has a transactional view of relationships and that his ability to read hearts makes him predisposed to see people as insincere (liars) since he can always tell when they're not being genuine. which is a pretty fun contrast to cheng xiaoshi, who's main character trait is his sincerity. and also gives an additional lens with looking at his relationship with others, like vein and li tianchen (expounded upon in the tags)

tbh the transactional view also makes sense. you don't have to worry about lies and deception if you signed a contract. each person will do what they say they will do because there are consequences otherwise. maybe he enjoys having friends that are "lost in the darkness" because they're the type of people who are more straightforward about striking deals.

my hc (until proven otherwise) is that liu xiao got his ability very young and it warped the way he views people. essentially, having an ability like that would train you to just always... doubt. especially considering what we know of the liu family — how his parents and brother behave, the family business, etc — liu xiao would just accept it as normal that the world is just naturally insincere.

from the little screentime we've seen of him, liu xiao himself hasn't lied much; the narrative obscures him to the audience but he's pretty forthcoming about his plans to the people he trusts (li tianchen, vein). he would've spilled the beans to xia fei, but xia fei didn't want to hear it lol.

also, unrelated, but it seems like this would be everyone's dnd classes:

the thing about season two’s ending is that they broke each other’s heart. they were speaking two different languages, as they often do, and saying the same thing—as they often do. so there’s no right or wrong. there’s no blame to be put on either. they just broke each other’s heart while trying to secure an eternity together

reading Fire and Blood and every time I start thinking Rhaena is kind of annoying me, I remember she definitely is hella traumatized after everything she's been through (harassed and hated by the realm, abandoned by the people pledged to follow her/her husband, husband and closest friend dying horrifically, forced to abandon her children for their safety, forcefully married to her uncle and abused/SA'd by him) and I forgive her.
