Skyfall: All things End

@leighsartworks216 @comatosebunny09 seeing you guys being angsty rubbed off on me, so I'll thank you for inspiring this mess of an idea. So, I was listening to Skyfall on loop cause it reminded me of the spoilers I've seen about Sylus' myth, and because I've been reading angst lately:

Mc has been reborn, but her memories went to someone else, that someone else is... well, you.

You've always been creative as a child, great at telling stories and even better at singing thanks to your family. You've dreamt about those moments since you were 12, always thinking those were just dreams, leftover from your wild imagination, even if they crushed your soul in the process with how vivid and realistic they were.

You grow up to become an actor, singer and songwriter. The songs are filled with themes of mystery, violence, fantasy, obsession and references to a forbidden love that ends much too soon after the death of a lover. The details change, but the story is always the same.

A woman, reborn time and time again, sometimes powerful and feared, others afraid but determined, many variations that lead to the same outcome: she encounters a man. He's the opposite of what she is or stands for, born as each others enemy. Sometimes it starts rough, both at each other's necks, sometimes it's just one of them who wants to kill while the other is simply entertained by the attempts. There's times when she'll be afraid of him, but will still stand her ground, others where he's her subject, even if under a leash.

On each one, they learn and become stronger, reaching the same level of power and growing comfortable with each other, only for it to be all ripped away.

Sometimes he dies, sometimes it's her.

You've started to gain traction after your last album. The songs are a little bit more hopeful and empowering, but they still carry the hints to the pain. You're in the middle of an interview, talking about your inspiration when you talk about your dreams. You mention considering the idea of making an album for a movie centered on the dreams, how you've gone back on your dream journals to organize everything and the fact that you're halfway through.

The interview ends with you talking about who you would like to cast for the male lead, if the choice was on your hands, and that's when you mention the man. You give chopped up features, mentioning how you've never fully remembered his face, only his voice and height. You end up describing the up and coming actor named Sylus without being aware of it.

The internet goes crazy with it.

They keep mentioning it even after your tour and next thing you know, it's no longer an idea, but a full sized project. Of course, Sylus said yes– or his manager did, who knows– and when you meet him, your world shifts on its axis. It's him, the man you've been dreaming of, the voice in your dreams you started using in your head to encourage yourself. He's real and alive.

You have no time to recollect and center yourself as he approaches along with his manager. You recognize her too, she's the woman you've seeing in your dreams. Great to finally meet the lovers, you think bitterly.

You're tense and jumpy, but you manage– through internal screams and tears, but you manage. He offers nothing to you as both of you read the script and exchange comments on scenes, and the concoction of emotions inside of you leave a sour taste in your mouth.

Does he remember? Doesn't he suspect you? Their past lives are detailed in that script, and somehow you know every detail without being her. Does he know you're the one who wrote the script? He has to, that part of the interview was the most popular, it made rounds on the internet for a while.

Why won't he say anything?

You feel more conflicted each time you see them interact, and it's even worse after you and Sylus start getting closer and comfortable with each other. Bitterness, happiness, sadness, hope, dread. Those are the emotions that you stew in. You use them to write on restless nights, songs filled with despair and yearning alike. It's harder to keep the facade the longer you go.

You don't explode, that would be a lie, you simply break during a particular scene. You can still tell between reality and fiction, but your heart doesn't. When you're acting the scene in which you loose him, holding him in your arms as you wail, you bring everyone to tears with you.

Everyone congratulates you after the scene.

"Your acting was great," says a background actor.

"That scene will surely get you an award," whispers your manager.

"It gave me full body chills!"

You smile and say your thanks, try to be humble even through the numbness of it all. There's a difference in Sylus' behavior after that, you can't pinpoint what it is, but you can guess what the reason is.

The curtain is about to close, so you pay no mind to it, you've accepted your fate, even if it hurts like hell.

Cardassian Flower Language

As requested by @unholysails here is the meta post about the flower language I invented in my garashir amesia fic A Difference In Perspective.

(I will note is contradicted by beta canon slightly but it's fic adjacent and I can do what I want and also I didn't read that particular book until AFTER I finished this).

Notably, in a desert climate, I think giving someone flowers would be a very special gesture*, almost analogous to the fruit gift culture in Japan in some ways

(*this is sort of canon in A Stitch In Time too where Garak grows edosian orchids to trade, so I'm taking that detail and running with it)

Garden culture too is a status thing - the more flowers you have growing, the better placed you are in society. Parks and gardens are a luxury, especially if it's a private one.

Anyway, the important part - colours! Basically:

Blue = passion (romantic/sexual)

White = loyalty, dedication (platonic)

Yellow = love (romantic)

Orange = steadfast commitment, marriage

Pink = sorrow, condolences, sympathy

Red = friendship, appreciation

Purple = purity, familial love

Green = thanks, gratitude, congratulations

(no black because there aren't really any true black flowers in nature and yes this is a scifi universe but I was mostly focusing on a palette that was in contrast to human ones)

Below the cut is a sort of essay about why each colour is what it is and how these tie into Cardassian culture at large. Also some notes about Garak's own logic for giving Julian a Yellow/Orange bouquet in the fic.

Importantly, I think earth tones (shades of orange, yellow, red and green) reflect things like steadfast commitment. Since desert = home, then comparing your love to these things means you're completely committed to them as I see Cardassians are quite proud of their home and these things are basically a way to compare your lover to the one thing you love above all else (or are supposed to, anyway)

Blue is obvious as a sexy sort of colour, since there's that quite popular headcanon (I don't believe it's strictly supported by any alpha or beta canon, but prove me wrong) that Cardassians blush blue, so much like how red is a bit of sexy colour in human cultures, so is blue here.

Other jewel tones are about expressing sentiment, the big gift giving ones that mean you really cared enough to source something bright and colourful for someone you care about. Flashy and a bit more temporary. Which is why blue is more of a ~sexy colour as opposed to being the more serious romantic colour.

A fun fact is that gay Cardassians have taken on blue flowers as a bit of a symbol, much like Oscar Wilde and his green carnations. The idea is that they wear these sort of sexual, flagrant symbols as a means of identifying each other in a secret code. In defiance of the State* they show themselves as equally worth the love they share with each other.

As an aside, Garak would not give Julian blue flowers because they're far more of a "you're hot/" kind of vibe (think a valentine's gift to a crush sort of thing) and he really didn't want to make his lover think he was just in it for sex! He really wanted to prove he was #serious about their relationship.

*going with the Una McCormack based idea that Cardassian society is super family-focused and kind of homophobic and rigid in a lot of ways pre-collapse/Fire (dominion war). Like they're super family focused and value unions that create families above all else, as "unproductive" unions are seen as inferior because they don't produce children.

I do also have a whole separate thing about "green marriages" which is basically Cardassian lavender marriages but reskinned for their cultural context. But that's neither here nor there, just another detail in my intricate web of Cardassian cultural ideas.

As it unplanningly turns out, the hiatus will last longer than I originally thought. After my brother's birthday last Saturday, things went a bit downhill (they were actually always there in the same spot i was just faking it for other reasons) so yeah. How long will it last i seriously don't know, but I assume it'd be around a week or two maybe. Or three. Just an early guess, i really don't know. It's nothing serious tbh it's just that ill zone out for a bit to keep things ok here. Some things got messed up and I got stuff to work on and i realized that the more I linger here the more I delay them :/ so yeah. Oh yeah and i wanna keep things at peace here and keeping my personal upset state out of here. So yeah, don't like saying it but projects and everything will be paused for a while due to reasons. Which unfortunately counts for TSoTT as well as much as I hate to say it. (Yeah I remember i said that chapter 5 should come out sooner but things didn't go out as planned and Ao3 is sometimes really messed up. Ill go edit that ik ik -_-)

All in all, to summarize: ill be gone for an undefined amount of time. How long is unknown even to me. You might see me online sometimes as ill check back in for some updates that I get or as ill edit some things here too. Ill probably see the mentions and asks and everything but won't answer, so if it's anything important or time restricted do feel free to specify and ill see to reply asap :)

omggggg i REMEMBER this so well from back in the day!! 😭😭😭 as simplified as it is, it's really so true. we can't have one without the other and even dnp themselves have acknowledged it. "through all the existential crises, you've been there feeding me snacks" or whatever dan said at the end of the haircutting video. they created such a wonderful community who never fail to lift each other up and welcome newcomers with open arms. i so deeply believe they were meant to find each other and everything that's come since then is further confirmation that they bring out the best in each other. heck, we even have dan starting to embrace color now! they deserve to be so proud of everything they've done and even the things they've tried to do, since it shows that they're truly unstoppable together. (because you know that even when they do solo projects, the other is right there to see them through every step of the way. and if that ain't love, i don't know what is! ❤️)

Milgram: Deep Cover Thoughts (Spoilers)

(some of the post written a few hours after, mainly bc deep cover released in between 2 of my mocks)

(all of this is personal opinion and interpretations, take this with a grain of salt or pepper or your choice of powdery food flavouring)

okay onto more lore-y thoughts:

(this part is me rambling at my screen trying to form a coherent theory of what happened, there are a lot of random stray thoughts here)

kotoko seems to be the 'punish > solve the systemic issue' type of person. we see that in the way she interacts with the brown-haired girl that she saved. when the girl grabbed onto her we see her conflicted eyes. to me it seemed partially out of desperation??(could just be the adrenaline high of her murder, we also see her sweaty so theres that. murder takes a lot of energy guys), or like she doesnt know what to do with herself. like she wants to push the girl away but felt like she could not (maybe knew that if she pushed her away she might harm the girl even more psychologically...). after that we see her barely acknowledging the brown haired girl in the park, seemingly more interested in the article on her phone than the girl she saved...

also, i found a post where someone translated the article!

to paraphrase, the son of a newspaper company's CEO was found dead (shocker, probably Kotoko's victim). The article goes on to talk about how a female university student had killed him in self defence due to getting into a scuffle as she caught him kidnapping a minor (so. definitely kotoko. probably). The minor agreed with the student that it was self-defence. The company's CEO then came out with an independent report all the injuries that they found on his son, which indicated that more than proportional violence was used, and then announced that the victim retracted her statement. The article then mentions all the rumors that exist about this murder...

interesting.

then that scene. that face of absolute fear on the girl and the uncaring apathy on kotoko's face. we clearly see the young girl trying to wear the cap, we see her basically modelling herself after kotoko. who can blame her? that's the person who saved her from... a life of suffering, probably. So to see kotoko ignoring her like that would absolutely destroy her.

so is kotoko just that heartless? no. or at least, i don't think so. remember the article? 'the victim retracted her statement'. this can happen for many reasons, such as being coerced, forced, bribed, etc. no matter why she did it, this would cast a lot of questions to the credibility of this case. maybe kotoko was legit mad? like 'if you don't want to be saved, i can't save you'. or she thought distancing herself from the victim would be the best thing to do, cuz otherwise people would argue that the two of them conspired together to murder a person and pass it off as a 'heroic deed'. by distancing herself, more of the 'blame' if it ever comes would fall on her. maybe she thought this was the best course of action in this scenario, so at least the girl would seem less 'co-conspirator' and more 'young child who was coerced'. either way, even without counting kotoko's bloodlust in the background, this is a fucked situation.

and yes, the prison seems to be composed of 5 direct and 5 indirect killers, kotoko being an indirect one. we know that she has actually, physically killed a person. the fact that she's in the prison for an indirect murder means that she didn't even consider that guy as a person (lol) or a being worth caring about.

so my running theory of what happened is:

(this part is just consolidation of the theory, above is rambling)

kotoko went after a the newspaper CEO's son, and found him kidnapping the child in that warehouse. then, she beat him up and possibly killed him with excessive force (i.e. the force she used was 'not proportional to the violence about to be inflicted onto her' or smth, im paraphrasing here but that's the gist. and i really mean 'possibly', ill elaborate later). after that, she reported the case to... probably the police? and claimed in court that she found CEO's son kidnapping a minor, then the interaction got violent and she had no choice but to kill him, with the help of the child's testimony. after that, she was released with no charges. (assuming that when the translation says 'the verdict...' it means that the trial has concluded, the judging body(japan doesn't have a jury. for serious criminal cases, they have a 'saiban-in'. look it up for more info abt this) has deemed kotoko free of all charges or smth, and now she walks free.)

but after THAT, the CEO got an independent investigation that reported those injuries, and they believe them to be inflicted not in self-defence but with intent to harm. this is where the idea that she might have killed him to sate her bloodlust comes from. while i do agree on some aspects, remember this is an 'independent investigation', and this is a CEO whose money speaks. also, what you're telling me is that the forensics who looked into the body did not believe the wounds were due to 'excessive force' (bc if that was the case the trial should have gone very very differently), but the group that you independently hired did. i mean, a little bit suspect about the level of validity of that claim, don't you think? (this is assuming that everyone in the trial was competent at their job and no foul play was present. if not, ignore this section.)

the CEO also claimed that the child retracted her testimony (that would be perjury, since that would be admitting that you were lying to the court. japan seems to have laws against perjury, but im not very sure how enforceable it really is, or if people actually get charged with it.). this casts doubt on the verdict and both kotoko's and the victim's credibility in the eyes of the public, you know how the public is. and in a case like this, where the one trying to get someone in jail is someone with money and influence to do private investigations and press conferences, the impact it can have on the life of the other party can get insanely negative. they could have their lives absolutely ruined by this, being publicly shamed this way, while the CEO walks away looking like a caring father 'just looking to avenge his child'. i think the following are plausible:

1st case scenario: im not a legal expert, so REALLY don't blindly believe this, but if this means the child is legally retracting her testimony that she made in front of the court, during a trial, this would require the child to reach out to the law enforcement entities to get it passed, and that might warrant a re-trial of the original trial. in other words, in this scenario kotoko is seriously fucked (probably). so kotoko avoiding the child and/or being pissed is.. personally i think there are better ways to handle this situation, one of which is get yourself a damn good lawyer and hope for the best, kotoko- but not unordinary.

2nd case scenario(more likely in my personal opinion): of course, there's always the case that all this is made up. in which case, kotoko would still have a reason to avoid the child, in that it's the most logical course of action to avoid unnecessary harm to the child. if she acts friendly to the child in public, there's a chance that the child will be seen as a co-conspirator to the 'murder'. also since its a guy with money who's speaking out, it's likely that public opinion would wholy turn against her. and the child, who helped defend kotoko in court, well... even more harrassment, probably. death threats, likely.

in both cases, her and the child would probably receive harrassment, which i think is a possible motive for the child getting killed. (i'm assuming that the child was the one who kotoko feels like she's killed, because she was put in milgram for indirect murder to complete the 5:5 ratio)

And then she becomes a furry.

yay? well, i think the wolf is supposed to be a symbolic of the monster that she now sees herself as. remember, if the version of events i described above is true then she probably faced a lot of social isolation. she has to distance herself from the victim that she helped and got close(? somewhat attached? like cmon she may be distracted with the very important life changing article but she doesn't outright ignore her, and that the chlid showed up to meet her implies that the child had an expectation that kotoko would be accepting of her company... right?) to, and many of her peers probably isolated themselves away from her (being a victim of a crime in japan can often be just as hard on a person's social life as being the perpetrator of said crime, so im not surprised if she was socially isolated by others AND herself). the lack of social support is the start of a mental downward spiral.

also, she keeps referring to herself as a tool and that she needs a next 'target'. so somewhere along the line, she stopped viewing herself as a person but merely a tool to enact justice with. because that's all she is now, she's caused the death of someone she swore to protect, the emotions are too overwhelming, please just give me something - anything - else to focus on; she's a monster, but if that's the case then so be it, she will be a monster with a purpose: eliminating the dregs of society, because that way at least she's of some use to society, otherwise-

otherwise, she's just a regular old monster.
