Wayne loves when his nephew stays the summer with him.
Eddie is six, curious about everything, and brings so much light in this ol’ home of his.
Wayne loves the kid, but working in the summer is a pain.
He saves up his PTO to take as much time off as he can but it doesn’t last Eddie’s entire stay so he pays a girl in Forest Hills to sit with Eddie until he falls asleep and Tracy across the way keeps an ear out for him. It ain’t perfect, but they make it work.
So, it’s a curious case when he gets off a mid-shift at three in the morning and finds Eddie still awake.
The boy ain’t slept a wink, Wayne can tell. He’s sitting on the couch, kicking his feet as a caterpillar crawled over his hand.
“Hi, Uncle Wayne,” Eddie waved. “I made a friend today. Can I keep him?”
“Is that why you’re still awake, to ask me that question?” Wayne asks. Eddie nods so Wayne nods back and asks, “You got a good habitat for your friend?”
“Uh-huh,” Eddie grins, gesturing to the blankets that have been permanently draped in the corner of the room all summer, “In the tent.”
Wayne makes a show of contemplating his answer just to see the anticipation in Eddie’s eyes, “Well, I guess so. You can keep your little friend.”
“Really?” No take backs?”
“No take backs, but you gotta go to bed right now,” Wayne tells him. “Go brush your teeth for me so I know you did it.”
Eddie runs off and Wayne is about to do the same to get ready for bed. He yawns as walks towards his bedroom and then he trips over something sticking out of the tent.
Not something. A leg. A small leg. A small leg of a small child sleeping in the tent in - “Eddie, what’s-“
“Shhh,” Eddie shushes, coming back into the room with his caterpillar inching across his shoulder. “You’re going to wake him up.”
Wayne rubs at his eyes, wishing this whole thing would go away. He almost hates to ask, “Who-“
“He’s called Steve,” Eddie supplies helpfully, “But I’m gonna change his name to something else. He cries a lot and he likes ice cream.”
Wayne ignores everything else Eddie says because his tired mind finally connected the face to the name to the angry adult, “Hopper’s boy Steve?”
“Not anymore,” Eddie says climbing into the tent to lay down. He pulls the teddy bear out of Steve’s arms and then pats him on the head, “He’s called Frodo now, Uncle Wayne.”
Yeah, his nephew kidnapped a child. He’s gonna have to call somebody, “Good lord.”

you're in the habit of denying yourself things.
if someone asked you directly, you would say that you love a little treat. you like iced coffee and getting the cookie. you drink juice out of a fancy cup sometimes, and often do use your candles until they gutter out helplessly.
but you hesitate about buying the 20 dollar hand mixer because, like. you could just use your arms. you weren't raised rich. you don't get to just spend the 20 dollars (remember when that could cover lunch?), at least - you don't spend that without agonizing over it first, trying to figure out the cost-benefits like you are defending yourself in front of a jury. yes, this rice cooker could seriously help you. but you do know how to make stovetop rice and it really isn't that hard. how many pies or brownies would you actually make, in order to make that hand mixer worthwhile?
what's wild is that if the money was for a friend, it would already be spent. you'd fork over 40 without blinking an eye, just to make them happy. the difference is that it's for you, so you need to justify it.
and it sneaks in. you ration yourself without meaning to - you don't finish the pint of ice cream, even though you want to. the next time you go to the store, you say ah, i really shouldn't, and then you walk away. you save little bits of your precious things - just in case. sometimes you even go so far as putting that one thing in your shopping cart. and then just leaving it there, because maybe-one-day, but not right now, there's other stuff going on.
you do self-care, of course. but you don't do it more than like, 3 days in a row. after that it just feels a little bit over-the-edge. like. you can't live in decadence, the economy is so bad right now, kid.
so you don't buy the rice cooker. you can-and-will spend the time over the stove. you can withstand the little sorrows. denial and discipline are practically synonyms. and you're not spoiled.
it's just - it's not always a rice cooker. sometimes it is a person or a job or a hug. sometimes it is asking for help. sometimes it is the summer and your college degree. sometimes it is looking down at scabbed knees and feeling a strange kind of falling, like you can't even recognize the girl you used to be. sometimes it is your handprint looking unsteady.
sometimes it is tuesday, and you didn't get fired, and you want to celebrate. but what is it you like, even? you search around your little heart and come up empty. you're so used to denying that all your desires draw a blank.
oh fuck. see, this is the perfect opportunity. if you had a mixer, you'd make a cake.

what compels me the most about jmart in TMA is how they’re the exact contrary of the “fall in love in every universe” trope. no, they’re not fated to meet, much less to even remotely like each other. they met under these extremely weird and specific circumstances from their world, and as jon himself said, if weirder circumstances didn’t happen they wouldn’t even get along. tmagp furthers this by making a point to showcase how, in protocolverse, they lived and died without ever knowing of each other’s existence.
they don’t fall in love in every universe. they only have this one. this one chance to make it work.
and they’re not perfect! they’re fucked up! they’re messy!
their communication is flawed, martin is jealous and manipulative, jon is too emotionally distant, they are each affected by their own traumas and it bleeds into their relationship, and they keep trying! and failing! and trying! until their tragic end. and you know what? that makes them EVEN MORE COMPELLING both as a couple and as characters!
we don’t need to ignore these aspects of their romance to make them interesting, and i’d argue that these complex factors and their flaws are the exact things that DO make them interesting. they had one shot, and it was flawed as hell, but they did their best to make the most of it under incredible stressors, such as the literal apocalypse. is that a less interesting kind of romance story than the others, just because they’re flawed and not always healthy and not at all fated? do we have to pretend they’re something they’re not to be enjoyable?

hey, just as a btw, a fic or a series not uploading for a year doesn't mean its abandoned.
Sometimes the authors have shit going on, other wips, or! it just needs to sit and marinate for a bit. Collecting all the flavor and details it wouldn't have otherwise.
it's okay for updates to take a while.
And if you're impatient? Why not leave a nice comment telling us (the author(s)) what you love about the fic or series? say that you love it, and are "waiting eagerly for the next chapter" and/or that you "would love to see x or y happen because it would mean-"
This could be a new fandom vibe because of all the "i have to drop this while people are still interested" energy, but its not universal, and i don't believe its good for the fandom ecosystem.
Have patience, and have compassion. Remember that authors are human and these fics? (or comics, animatics, whatever) This is our art. We care about it just as much, if not more than you.

I believe Bobby is coming back from the dead because I think we deserve to live in a world where Kenneth Choi gets to act his ass off by playing a simultaneously relieved/joyous and angry/furious Chimney, who feels like he has to thank Bobby, but also scream at him until his throat is sore because it wasn't fair to make that decision! he's going to say they should have played rock, paper, scissors and Bobby will chuckle because he thinks he's joking like silly haha Chimney, but Chimney is like "no, we should have discussed it, you died and I didn't even get to say thank you. you died and I owed you a debt I didn't even know about. you let me carry that" and he has to wrestle with the guilt of knowing that Bobby would do that for him, not just theoretically, but actual concrete proof that Bobby would die to save him. which they all know on some surface level that they'd die for one another, but it feels like such a far-off concept until it isn't. but Chimney also has to deal with the gratitude because Chimney is also so incredibly thankful that he didn't die. every step of the way he wanted Ravi, Bobby, Buck, and Athena to commit crimes, because he loves his life and he wants to keep living it. he's so overjoyed that he got to go home to his wife and kid, and that comes with its own guilt because how can he be so happy to be home when Bobby DIED. does that make him a monster? that on some level he's HAPPY that Bobby did that? and now he has to FACE Bobby. so he tries to be the Before Chimney who gets people whimsical gifts, but how do you give someone balloons about choosing your life over theirs? and he spirals because he's different now and Bobby is here and he has so so much he wants to say but all of it feels contradictory and unfair and he would normally go to Bobby for advice. so he does. he goes to Bobby and he says "what would you do, if you were in my position?" and Bobby just says "whatever you need to say or feel, I understand" and that just makes Chimney even more upset because what he needs is for none of this to have ever happened. its like they all got a re-do, but kept the memories and the feelings and now he has nowhere appropriate to put them. anyway, Bobby lives and we get Chimney angst yay <3 forever and ever.
