James Rupert Rhodes wanted to marry Anthony Edward Stark since graduation. He didn’t realize it until he was going to leave in three months for the Air Force and his throat grew tight and it was...too much.

They met at East Campus. It’s weird as fuck, there aren’t a lot of double rooms, and Tony chose it to piss off his dad. He also picked a double because he figured that he could use the other space to work on projects.

Tony’s room has a freak accident due to a philosophy major sending their oven down a floor, and so he’s staying with Rhodes.

They don’t really speak much during the first couple days. Rhodey assumes that Tony has better things to do, and they’re so...different.

As it turns out, they’re not. Tony’s wanted by the campus police for pantsing the leader of some frat. Rhodey hides him under his bed, starts reading a magazine, and says he has “no idea where that millionaire kid went off to...maybe the library?”

Tony treats Rhodey to late-night bacon-cheese fries. They order Cokes because there’s no way in hell Tony’s going to drink when he’s barely eighteen, and Rhodey doesn’t like the way drinks taste.

They stay up late. They have some classes together and start sitting together. Tony’s brilliant, and Rhodey calls out some problematic flaws in robots or something.

“What if we build a robot?” Rhodey asks one night. They’re drinking grape juice boxes--Tony said why the hell wouldn’t you if you had the freedom?--and talking about the competitions. The judge hates Tony and Rhodey. He thinks Rhodey is mooching off Tony’s talent, but he thinks Tony’s lifting ideas from his father.

“My dad doesn’t do Artificial Intelligence,” Tony says. “Called it ‘bullshit’ and only sci-fi writers would ever think it was possible.”

Rhodey hates Howard Stark. Hates him for the flinches and the deprecating comments and the way he’s not even a father. Dads don’t hurt you. They aren’t supposed to.

“Let’s do it,” Rhodey says. “I want to beat that assclown of a judge.”

Dum-E is a dumb son of a bitch, but damn he’s an AI. Tony’s like a mother, flitting all around and worrying about his circuits and whether or not he’ll play with the other kids.

“He’ll be fine,” Rhodey says. “He’s a kid, essentially. At least he’s curious and not rebelling against commands, yet.”

Dum-E wins by a landslide, and Tony hugs Rhodey and it’s....oh.

His mom spots it immediately, spots it in the way that he agonizes over a Christmas gift for him, in the way they tease each other, and the way that Rhodey knows how his morning routine goes down, right to the bottom stair that almost gets skipped.

He knows that he loves him with everything.

Knows that he wants to get married, everything be damned.

But he also knows that he wants to give Tony a good wedding and a good husband. He can’t put a ring on his finger and then salute a goodbye. It’s not in his character.

He sends Tony letters about everything. His team, the missions (even some classified details), and what foods he wished they had. Sure they have food, but Rhodey says that it tastes like they haven’t updated the rations since 1968.

Tony writes to him about various inventions,the wonderful in-statement of Virginia Potts as a personal assistant (nickname pending), and all the boring board members suffering at his antics.

His next leave is for six months. He practically falls to his knees with a ring he knows Tony will love. It’s simple and gold and everything.

Things are tough. Tony’s nearly late to the wedding because he tried to take a shortcut and ended up with a car in a ditch. Rhodey started laughing so hard he snorted during vows.

But they are together, through everything. Rhodey made that promise.

1983, hacks into the pentagon on a dare ( and to prove he could )

spring 1985, graduates high school early and is accepted into mit

fall 1985, meets james rupert rhodes, becoming best friends by the end of the year

1986, wins 4th annual mit robot design award

creates Dum-E

1987, graduates summa cum laude from mit

december 16 1991, both parents die in a car crash. tony inherits everything, including ownership of stark industries

february 1993, edwin jarvis passes; tony finishes developing his home a.i. and names it after the man

summer 1995, develops and finishes a partner a.i. for j.a.r.v.i.s. to be named after ana

May 4 - Star Wars Day

Bucky and Steve found them in the forest after the third tree went down. Rhodes and Stark had been missing all day after breakfast, conspiring together and then taking off once their plates were empty. Normally it wouldn’t have been much of a concern but when a tree fell in the surrounding forest and Pepper Potts called Steve knew it was going to be a worrisome day.

“Where are they Steve?” Pepper Potts was terrifying and Steve buckled in a second.

“No idea ma’am, they disappeared after breakfast.” Bucky snickered in the background and Steve glared at him. Even though it didn’t help him at all.

“Steve, find them and when you do call me. I’ll be in touch.”

“Yes ma’am.” Once the phone was disconnected Steve felt like he could breathe again and start whining, “Why is it my problem?”

Bucky came over and clapped him on the back, “You are team captain, go find your team.” In the distance, they heard another tree fall and Buck just smirked at him.

So when they came across the two best friends standing at the bottom of a hill, glowing sticks in their hands, Steve called Pepper.

“Did you find them?”

“Yes, they’re in the woods surround the compound and battling with glowing sticks.”

“Glowing sticks?”

“Yes, red and blue glowing sticks that they’re using as swords.”

“I’ll be right there, don’t lose sight of them.” She didn’t wait for anything else from Steve, just hung up. So Steve and Bucky stood there a safe distance between them and those glowing sticks.

“Pepper’s going to kill them.”

Bucky smirked, “I’m going to record it.” While they were waiting for Pepper to arrive Clint called.

“Where the hell is everyone?” Bucky pulled the phone away from his ear when Clint shrieked at him.

“In the forest.” Of course Bucky was going to keep it as vague as possible while Steve sweated over the arrival of Miss Potts.

“What? Why? What’s happening out there? An attack, give me details man!”

“Come find out.” And then he hung up on him. “Clint should be here soon.”

“Great.” Right after that, Rhodes took a swing at Tony and missed. But his glow stick sliced through the tree behind him like butter. “What the hell!”

Not looking away from the battle between Rhodes and Stark, Bucky commented, “Looks like I might lose another hand today.” The look of horror on Steve’s face was priceless.

When Clint arrived, he could believe it. “No way.”

Bucky smirked, “Yep.”

“But it’s impossible, he couldn’t–”

“He did.”

“But–”

“Look.”

“Can we?”

“No.”

“Why?”

“Potts.”

“Oh they’re fucked.”

Steve spoke on auto pilot, “Language Clint.”

“Sorry Cap.”

A quinjet touched down and out came Pepper Potts and Nick Fury.

“ANTHONY EDWARD STARK AND JAMES RUPERT RHODES PUT THE LIGHT SABERS DOWN OR SO HELP ME GOD I WILL STRANGLE YOU!”

Both men jumped back from each other, light sabers shining bright between them. “But Pepper–” they whined looking up the hill at her.

“RIGHT NOW DON’T MAKE ME SAY IT AGAIN.”

They were back in the compound, light sabers powered down and held secure by Miss Potts as she finished scolding the two men. Pepper had finally calmed down enough to stop and pinched the bridge of her nose.

Tony turned to James, “Fierce Rhodey, our battle was.” Rhodes snickered.

-SMACK- -SMACK-

Tony rubbed his burning cheek, “I deserved that.”

Rhodey rubbed his own matching one, “I didn’t.”

“Say another word and I won’t hesitate to do it again.” Pepper glared the two into submission.
