Okay, I threw a pirate Fantasy High AU at the wall a while back (find the original post here), where Adaine was a princess, Kristen was her lady-in-waiting, and they both got captured by a pirate crew run by Fabian and wound up joining the crew once he realized that both of them desperately needed a new life... and honestly? I like it, I'm revamping it, I'm exploring the stuff I left hanging, you're welcome.
Right off the bat---I've decided that Fabadaine is gonna be the main ship. They're the two main characters, we're gonna be inside their heads for the most part, I've gotten pretty attached to them... yeah. Of course, Adaine is always on the ace spectrum in my fics, so they do obviously become close friends who tease and rib each other all the time before anything romantic happens---and there are also polyamorous shenanigans all through this story, so there's absolutely going to be some touches of Inkblade and Fabragh here and there. Being a multishipper is very nice.
While we're on the topic of differing character dynamics, Fig is part of Fabian's crew because she's his stepsister---Gilear was an ambassador who was sent to the pirate country of Leviathan in a futile attempt for a peace treaty, and Hallariel, who'd taken up the mantle of the Pirate Queen after her husband was lost at sea, decided that she absolutely preferred him to all the other suitors clamoring for her hand. Because of this, Fig spent her teenage years on Leviathan with Fabian, getting into trouble and eventually becoming both incredible musicians and insanely competent thieves. I love writing these two with an established sibling relationship, and you cannot stop me. (Also, yes, their little sister features in this.)
Ayda is a librarian in Leviathan, Fabian's childhood friend, and Fig's longterm girlfriend... well, they're gonna get married at some point in the story, but when we first meet her, they're girlfriends. Ayda is also the first person to give Adaine a proper spellbook, since before that, Adaine was learning wizardry in secret and simply scribbling down magical formulas in an old notebook. They become pretty fast friends.
Gertie and Tracker are dating from the start, and Kristen winds up joining their polycue---Gertie agrees to teach her to fight, Tracker helps her figure out what kind of god she wants to follow now that she's left Helio behind, and the end result is two very cool girlfriends who will throw hands with you when your old church comes looking for you.
Oh, yeah, speaking of which---of course, Angwyn and Arianwen have no interest in getting Adaine back at first, since they don't consider her to be anything other than an improper disappointment, but the church of Helio is very interested in recovering their Chosen One from the clutches of pirates... and when it's revealed that Adaine is the Oracle of her generation, the royal house of Abernant definitely changes their tune on leaving their spare behind. This is also motivated partially by the fact that Aelwyn, the supposedly perfect heir to the throne, has been moonlighting as a gentlewoman thief.
And with all that juicy information out of the way... let's look at the crews of some other ships sailing the waves:
The Maiden Voyage
Antiope Jones is the youngest in a long line of warriors who have sworn themselves in service of the kingdom she hails from, but she always felt like the odd one out---not for lack of love from her family, but rather due to the expectation and assumption that she would become just like them. As she grew older, she started to see corruption in nearly every governing body, and she eventually decided that she would make her own name for herself, on her own terms. Antiope became a skilled archer, a brilliant strategist, and a renowned pirate captain in charge of her own crew, formed from those she met as she made her way across the waves:
Katja Cleaver, Antiope's first mate, most trusted ally, and eventual girlfriend. She's the daughter of Karl Cleaver, a well-known pirate in his own right, who took up his sword after he finally made the decision to settle down and retire... though, she herself is still nervous about living up to her father's legacy, even if she's the happiest she's ever been while sailing with her sisters. And for those of you who were worrying---Katja absolutely still has Cinnamon. Cinnamon is a tamed kelpie in this, so she's perfectly capable of living on a pirate ship.
Danielle Barkstock, a former wandering nomad who hitched a ride on a pirate ship one day, got swept up in the lifestyle, and liked it so much that they decided to stick around. For Yelle, living a life of utter anarchy away from civilization is a dream come true, and she manages to be a pretty calming and thought-provoking presence on the ship despite her more wild tendencies... though, she still often needs to be reminded that she's allowed to be the one taking focus every now and then. Also, they're the ship's cook, which has led to recipes that are incredible and recipes that are, well... let's say "experimental."
Penny Luckstone, an incredibly proficient spy and assassin who grew up on Leviathan and initially joined the Maiden Voyage so she could hone her training and prove herself worthy of joining a secret society of thieves, assassins, and spies who act as an unofficial secret service. As she grew closer to her newfound crew, however, she decided that she'd much prefer working with them, and now, Penny's one of the best damn gunners and navigators that any pirate crew has ever had.
Sam Nightingale, an ex-stage diva who had a very public falling out with her manager-slash-mother and proceeded to disappear from the public eye entirely, going to stay with her cousin on Leviathan instead. When she met Antiope by chance, she decided to put both her musical talents and her natural gifts at magic to embracing a life of adventure, and she's earned a spot on the crew as both the entertainer and the resident spellslinger.
Ostentatia Wallace, one of the few remaining worshipers of a god of the forge that most believe to be dead. She took up piracy because she saw it as the easiest way to get a steady access to materials she could use to make accessories, jewelry, and clothing, both as a way to honor her god and to hopefully become a well-known fashion designer someday. Until then, Ostentatia's happy to sail the waves alongside her sisters, and she pulls double duty as the ship's surgeon and carpenter.
And lastly, Zelda Donovan, a close friend of Sam's since Leviathan who's part of a family of incredibly bloodthirsty pirates who live for the revelry and chaos above all else. In sharp contrast with the majority of her family, she's very much an introvert who prefers the quieter side of living a life on the sea, but make no mistake---she's a beast in combat, and there's a lot of people out there who speak her name with fear. Also, Zelda happens to be Gorgug's ex. They're still friends, but it definitely makes it a bit awkward whenever they run into each other.
Of course, every pirate crew needs a friendly rival, and Fabian's crew (name pending) has one one in the crew of...
The Unlucky Rat
Oisin Haknivar is a highly proficient wizard who disowned himself from his old-money, stuffy, and incredibly corrupt family in favor of being a pirate, and he became captain of his own ship... which he stole from his former friend, a naval officer named Kipperlilly Copperkettle who holds grudges like it's a competitive sport. While his crew is rather small in comparison to a lot of other ships, they're getting more and more well-known under his leadership. Also, Oisin and Fabian are coming out of a very heated situationship. It was the only reason they weren't killing each other for a second there, and they're starting to settle into a sort of alliance.
Ivy Embra is Oisin's first mate, a Leviathan lass who lives for drama, revelry, and good-old-fashioned chaos. While she's always a little bit wary around newcomers, she's surprisingly one of the more reasonable members of the crew once you get to know her... of course, you'll get to know her once she stops suggesting fun games that may or may not end in you getting tossed overboard. It should be no surprise that she's also in charge of managing the ship's guns.
Mary Ann Skuttle is a practical enigma to everyone outside of the Unlucky Rat---nobody's quite sure what she does on the ship, or why she even took up pirating in the first place. All that's really known about her is that she particularly enjoys collecting cute and well-crafted things, and that she is one of the most ruthless fighters that has ever lived. Gorgug has a crush on her, but won't admit it.
Ruben Hopclap is the ship's musician and cook, and he's always trusted to put a positive spin on whatever situation they're in. Most people think that there must be some sort of tragic reason as to why a guy as sunshiny as him became a pirate, but the truth is actually pretty simple: he was a sailor on the first ship that Oisin and Ivy ever raided, they took him as a prisoner, and he endeared himself to them through his kind nature, insightful advice, and his ability to both cook well and play the lute. Ruben's just a little guy.
And, of course, Lucy Frostblade is the ship's surgeon and navigator, and she's incredibly good at both of those things. She used to be Kipperlilly's second-in-command, but after she started to have a change of heart regarding some of the missions the navy was going on, Kipperlilly had her thrown overboard. Oisin and Ivy found Lucy floating face-up in the water, very near death, and through sheer luck more than anything else, they were able to nurse her back to health. She's not much of a fighter, but she is someone who is very willing to defend her friends and what she cares about, and she's kind of the moral compass of the ship.
Also, the crew recently took a missionary of the Church of Helio hostage and are trying to get him to recognize that he's in a cult. It's slow going, and Buddy keeps on praying for their souls, but he and Ruben are getting along.
...THAT'S ALL FOR NOW

If your still taking prompt requests: Adaine with fight me or get me.
these drabbles have been awesome
flatter will get you anywhere, anon, im gonna do BOTH
Fabian screeched in pain as an arrow was shot into his shoulders, his sword falling to his side as he felt his arm go numb from whatever poison the arrow was coated with. The beast with the hammer grabbed him by the arm and pushed him into a wall, knocking the hair out of him and pinning him in place. The sorcerer smirk as Fabian spit blood onto the floor. "You really shouldn't have come here, boy. Any last words?" Fabian smirked as blood dripped down his chin. "Don't need any. You're gonna die here." "Why? Because you're a son of some famous pirate captain? Because your mommy is a pretty little elf?" "No," Fabian said simply, "it's because now that you've dared to touch me, she's going to kill you." The sorcerer opened his mouth, probably to question what the fuck Fabian meant by that, but the sound of a near by ogre falling dead from a disintegration spell. The beast that was holding Fabian followed suit from Blight. Neither Fabian or the sorcerer had a chance to blink before Adaine Abernant appeared in all her glorious righteous fury, holding her boyfriend by his left shoulder while pressing a sword to the sorcerer's face. The sorcerer gulped. "I'm a dead man, aren't I?" Fabian and Adaine spoke simultaneously as he snuggled close to her and raised his left hand to cast Cure Wounds on himself. "You have no idea."

i think it would be cool if fabian got his top surgery done at kei lumennura so he had these wacky majestic looking top surgery scars. it was an aesthetic choice. he told them go wild and they did.
oracool propaganda otd: adaine very closely inspecting and touching the scars once fabian’s all healed up. she is not a touchy person in the slightest. 0 interest in bodies normally. but she’s earnestly fascinated by the arcane handiwork. the INTRICACIES… the symmetry is so impressive for something handmade… it’s so complex and still cohesive… so fabian is just nodding along. scared fully stiff (not sexual). it’s like taking in a stray cat and it doesn’t trust you yet but it sits in your lap randomly and you’re afraid to pet it because you think it’ll get mad or scared.

First fanfiction I’ve written in ages, and of course it’s Fabadine centric because I can’t get into a fandom normally. Thanks to @cheeblebeeb for the motivation and proofreading!
Summary:
Fabian Seacaster is in danger of flunking his oral practical magic exams. Adaine Abernant, ever the good friend (and to save Riz from burnout), agrees to tutor him. What begins as a routine study session soon tangles into something more complicated. All thanks to hand gestures.

I know I initially thought Thistlecaster for the Leverage AU (because, honestly, there's gotta be one romantic relationship in the crew, the romantic relationships in Leverage are one of my favorite parts), but honestly... Fabadaine might be where it's at.
Because there's Adaine, who was manipulated into being the world's perfect thief so her parents could profit, whose deep fascination and interest in history was warped and twisted until all she saw were artifacts that she could swipe, who had to deal with her parents leaving her to rot when she got caught after she'd sacrificed her entire childhood for their sake. And she picked herself up, told herself "never again," and taught herself to be wholly self-reliant, made sure that her past would always be a mystery, to be unpredictable and unknowable so that she could never be caught. Always the first one to leave, always the first one to betray, don't get stuck and don't slow down.
And then there's Fabian, who's been in the world of thieves his entire life, who almost certainly heard whispers of how the Abernant family really got all of their money, and who forged his entire criminal career off of two things---his family, and reading people. Knowing that going by "Seacaster" would always make people think of his father first, he changed his surname to his stepsister's, and they became legends together. He cherishes the fact that his mother taught him and Fig everything she knew, and he's honed his mind so he can pick up on everything about a person. Even someone with walls as high as Adaine's, even someone who's carefully crafted herself as an enigma, even someone who can't allow herself to let someone in... and yet, he himself hides behind a shifting array of masks, and it's so very rare that he lets someone see the truth.
The thief who had to leave her sister behind, and the grifter who wouldn't do anything without his sister. The oracle who became the best in her field to spite everything her family taught her, and the performer who became the best in his field to honor everything his family taught him. The career criminals who hide themselves from the world in two vastly different ways, but have, against all odds, found someone new who accepts the person underneath the mask.
I dunno, man, I... I think this is something.

im ab to be annoying ab dimension20 fhjy but im genuinely loving the character arcs for the bad kids this season?
kristen going from self-annihilatingly stupid to trying to build a genuine bridge with the man who not only wielded the religion that traumatised her (bobby dawn), but also was trying to ruin her life, just bc she thought a grieving father ought to be comforted in some way? her genuine distress at being unable to revivify buddy even though the two had only had negative interactions, or her biting her tongue in front of her parents so she could better look after her little siblings? grappling with the fact that she still, on some level, expected practising religion to be easy and convenient for her as a holdover from an entire childhood spent being a Chosen One, and finally putting her nose to the grindstone and committing to working her ass off for a deity that couldn't even benefit her for a hot minute? making an effort to be cordial with tracker's new gf and letting go of that codependency? the kristen applebees from ep20 would NOT do all the same stupid shit as ep1 and i love that.
fabian being humbled by the narrative again and again has been an absolute treat for his character. the whole ivy/mazey situation was great: freshman/sophomore year fabian would've gone for ivy no sweat, i mean her character seemed pretty similar to pre-redemption aelwyn and he had a huge crush on her then. but this time, when he realised he'd hurt a genuinely great person, and intentionally swallowed his pride to make it up to mazey, even though it required him being 'uncool' with the whole twister thing. his general arc of learning that earnestness and humility doesn't make him less of a man felt like a natural extension of fabian defining his own version of masculinity- sure, a 'maximum legend', but also someone deeply involved in the arts, and someone who is less afraid of saying sorry and being vulnerable in front of someone he likes
fig. fig fig fig. what a woman. its been absolutely fascinating watching build her sense of identity over these three seasons. at her core, fig is a character that loves so deeply. in freshman, she was terrified of the depth of her own devotion, so she tried to distance herself emotionally from everyone. in sophomore, she built herself around that love for other people. in junior year, fig's arc has been learning she can do both: that she's defined by her love for others, but not solely by it. ik emily wanted to retire the character before this season but i think fig's paladin arc was the best capstone to her journey possible.
gorgug's arc has been about establishing clear boundaries for himself and i love it. im aware there's been some Discourse ab the mango soda scene but to me that was pretty easily chalked up to teenage insecurity. a big part of gorgug's arc was trying to believe in himself when everyone around him told him he was too dumb to follow his passion- imagine struggling in an area that you have no natural aptitude for, and someone comes along and also trounces you in the one area you thought you were the best in. i'd be petty and reactive too (gorgug follows up calling her a freak with the fact that she beat the shit out of him, so its clearly him just still smarting from a bruised ego and not actual malice). in general, i've really like gorgug learning to put his foot down and say enough is enough without completely losing his gentleness.
adaine hasnt had an obvious arc, but considering she addressed most of her baggage in the first two seasons, i'm not surprised. i would've liked to see the other bad kids address her 'teenage adult' behaviour, but her self-awareness about it and relying on fabian to pull in clutch for the oracool stuff still felt like she'd learned to rely on her friends at least + her reaching out to aelwyn and the two of them healing from their parents together has been rewarding it its own right.
riz is perfect and has learned nothing. his neuroticism is part of his natural swag

So I made a post about Adaine being the principal after killing Arthur Aguefort in a duel. And if that happens I think it would be fun for the bad kids to join her as teachers so here's what I think they teach
Kristen- Cleric teacher obviously. I think she's the most powerful and best cleric in the world, or at the very least Elmville even if she stumbles a lot. I think her background as helioic/solesian, who created her own god and found then revived another gives her a very unique perspective for any young clerics out there. I also think as someone who worships a pantheon it would work like Yolanda giving up her path of following a single god to be more fair to the students she teaches, unlike Bobby Dawn. Kristen has made as many mistakes as you can as a cleric so she would be a very good person to teach kids who might have anxiety about their choices.
Fabian- Bard Teacher, dance and sword. Corsica is a young woman as the fighter teacher so there's no real reason to replace her when the bad kids come of age. Fabian also drifted away from fighter so hard to bard it's clear where his heart is even if he's still an amazing fighter. I think he would be the teacher that brags about being the future and present of dance, along with being the Oracool of Dance to his students. He also has made a lot of steps from his stumbles in his school days and assures his students it's okay to fail, it's okay to wallow but you do have to pick yourself up still. Seacaster manor is still used as a study hall for any students who need it and his is the teacher willing to help any and all students, no matter the class or grade
Gorgug- Barbarian teacher. While I think artificing has his heart more, I could see Gorgug as an amazing Barbarian teacher. His goal is to undo a lot of the toxic aspects of rage and being a barbarian that people like Porter tried to force upon the class and the students taking it. He teaches about the positives of rage, that while it's a strong weapon, it can be an amazing shield to protect people. He is also the main multiclass advisor, he never refuses an MCAT request, he does ask questions but to let students talk about their interests not to make thing think their ideas are stupid or pointless
Riz- Rogue teacher. I think Riz starts to work for the CoC (Council of Chosen) for a bit after graduation, but doesn't like it since it feels more like Narc shit than spy work like his dad did. He's more fair than Yolanda, he is on school grounds more so kids have a chance to find him instead of having to go to a town miles away to find Eugenia. He focuses on the practical application of being a rogue, stressing that it's more than just damage for sneak attack. Being a rogue is about team work to make sneak attack easier, knowing your terrain to making hiding easier and not to jump into lava when you're not fire resistant or immune, investigating things not just focus on killing people
Fig- Sorcery teacher. Obviously she wouldn't be the bard teacher. She didn't go to bard classes as a student, why would she go as a teacher, despite being one of the most famous musicians in Spire. At first it seems like she's just another Jace, you know just hanging with her students instead of really teaching because sorcery is innate. But she's actually very good with them, she actually has experience in knowing what it's like to get powers from your blood instead of hard work. she also encourages her students to try multiclassing since they have time at school, she doesn't want them wasting the time they have when their young. Hackysack is fun, but they should try things when they're young and can get easy A's so try other class.
Adaine- Before she became principal she takes over for Tiberia as the wizarding teacher. she is much kinder and sympathetic than the previous teacher. She also doesn't make her students buy their own spell components and she makes sure that they know that they can explore other disciplines. Everyone thinks she's the sweet gentle wizard teacher until one of her students get bullied and she throws the other kid off them, or a monster attacks the school and she just decks it in the face exploding it's skull from the force of the blow. I also think she recommends that her students get exercise more than any previous wizard teacher. Studying and reading is important, but spells aren't everything, sometimes a healthy lifestyle can save you more than just magic.
