What did you think of Harrow the Ninth? I remember you mentioning you'd started reading it a while ago
I'm SO sorry it's taken me so long to respond to this. Life's been hectic, work's been hectic, blah blah you know I'm sure you get it.
anyways! finally responding!!
I quite liked it! I think I've said this before, but I liked just about everything about Gideon the Ninth…. except for fucking Gideon herself lmao. Not that I entirely hated her as a character or anything, but man I could not stand reading her voice, which was extra frustrating because I otherwise was totally on board with everything else going on in the book.
I was already really liking Harrow in the first book, so was more than willing to give the second book a try (despite not clicking with the narration of the first) when I heard it would be her book. And then I learned it was (mostly) in second person? That had me super intrigued.
So yeah. Went ahead and read it despite my mixed opinions on Gideon and oh yeah I'm hooked now and dying to find the time to sit down with Nona. It basically had all the things I liked from the first (fascinating world building, air of mystery and gothic horror vibes, Harrow), added additional things I really love (delving more into crazy space politics, Ianthe SHINING, Mercymorn's everything), and (for the most part) removed the one hangup I had (stfu Gideon).
And (spoilers) I was actually even, surprisingly, looking forward to Gideon revealing herself towards the end there?? idk, maybe lyctorhood has made her more tolerable as a byproduct or something.

Hey thanks to @orangedodge I know have an idea...if Kamala DOES CANONICAL RPF FICS about the xmen mainly Wolverine and Scemma....who is to say she is not writing about others?
Kurt's excalibur time sure made him famous.
Ororo is no brainer.
But...Kitty? Oh she has full benefits here. She is famous but no one knows who she is.
Fans: so eloquent and poison. Who is she? Is she a new Xmen?
And while this could (ignoring canon ) give more positive attention to the Xmen...Kitty is really just drinking her coffee not bothering. She has a big fanbase and....she does not engage it.
Fans:🤩Can we meet the famous Kitty Pryde?
Kurt:you just did...she is literally drinking coffee right there.
The fans either love her or have a massive whiplash

@orangedodge I can tell you have a love for the character and thanks to you I have it as well
My first intro to her was in Evolution, I loved her friendship with Kitty and how it was portrayed in the show I wish we saw more of her in the show
I admit in my opinion she should become a leader of her own faction of X-men and retire to be a teacher or psychiatrist to help the mutants navigate their emotions.
I appreciate you telling me all of this
What do you think of Danielle Moonstar?
I like her! Great, visually interesting powers and she has some solid relationships within her team to bounce off of.
She won me over all the way back when she told Charles off over the dress code, and she's been one of the best parts of the New Mutants ever since. And I've always liked how her leadership style is more geared towards guiding her team emotionally and helping them sort themselves out so they can go do what they need to do. Its a neat contrast to the other team leaders of the genre who tend to go all in on micromanaging the utility of their team, and let them flounder as individual people.
Out of all of the other ex-students I felt like she had the strongest argument for transitioning into a teaching role. New Mutants vol. 2 just felt like a natural outgrowth of what she'd already been doing for years.
In spite of that I can't fairly call her one of my all-time favorites, because I think that Illyana, Roberto, and Xuan have played more of an integral role in more of my favorite stories, though I do feel like they've just had more opportunities than Dani has to break out. (So have Amara, Sam, and Rahne but in their case most of those stories were awful)
How long has it been since she just had a story of her own, that wasn't her being the leader/supportive friend in someone else's story? You've got the Valkyrie thing and that whole situation with Hela, but even that was a decade ago today. There was a glimmer of more in the rest of the Zeb Wells run where she was promoted as the future leader of the X-Men, and though I believe Wells did a great job of it, as with so many things, the other X-Writers of his day didn't much care for what he was doing and so no one ever engaged with the concept in other ongoing works.
And before that, you've really got to go all the way back to X-Force's road trip years and to her time undercover with the MLF to have a really clear direction for Dani's character.
She had some quite enjoyable material very recently in the Krakoa era New Mutants, but still got far less of a spotlight than the other OG members--she was (again) more often than not a supporting character: for Magik, for Karma, for Wolfsbane, for the new kids. I would largely sum up her role in New Mutants: Academy X the same way. She had a strong introduction but thereafter was there to support the kids on their journeys, and provide occasional moral guidance to the rest of her old team. And yes, I did praise that they took that direction with her, as a teacher, as a leader, but that can't be all they let her do.
I think, in general, all of the second generation X-Men have suffered from the introduction of subsequent teams of new second generation X-Men. Writers at Marvel have had a really unfortunate tendency to age up the younger X-Men for the wrong reasons: because they want to introduce their own new characters to replace them, and not because they recognize that it's time for the kids to grow up and become the X-Men themselves. And because of her role as the team's leader it's cut Dani more than the rest.
Dani was supposed to grow up and replace Cyclops, only what was actually allowed to happen was she grew up so that Generation X and the New X-Men could replace her, all while Cyclops is still the leader today. So what to do with Dani? What can occupy her time that's worthy of the designated successor to Cyclops? While they've found roles for Magik and Karma and Cannonball and Sunspot, I don't think they've ever really found one for Mirage. I do hope there's something more to this secret society she's gone off and joined, that we can build off of.

oh yeah. salem’s expression gave nothing away and it was terrifying.
i also can’t help but to think to the moment when salem realized that the gods were fallible when cinder’s lies actually worked.

Do you think Arwen did much... I guess "prep work" would be what to call it, before going to Gondor? They're not exactly unknown to the elves even if she's probably never been there herself. Rivendell gets visitors. They shouldn't be completely out of her frame of reference, should they?
She’s certainly not ignorant. But we do know that a) few mortals have ever seen Arwen, much less interacted with her, and b) Gondor has little to no direct dealings with Elves in modern times. Also, the Council’s take on Gondor and Rohan seems pretty flawed. So even if she tried to learn as much as she could before leaving, I think that would still be quite different from the reality of life in Minas Tirith/Anor as queen.

What do you think about the possibility of time or dimensional travel in FF7R? I've seen theories too, but I was kind of hesitant to actually make the leap that this is definitely how Nomura intended it to be read, that the cast is actually changing time or visiting new dimensions, when that setting already has the Lifestream complicating things (and we don't really, IIRC, truly know what that thing actually is or what the consequences of entering the Lifestream really are)
While i’ve seen theories on it too, I actually haven’t PLAYED FF7R myself, and it’s been sooooooo long since I’ve watched a playthrough of the original FF7 that I barely remember anything from it. So while I know there are theories that FF7R is actually a sequel that branches off, rather than an honest remake, I can’t tell you what I think about that in depth, sorry!

Do you think Jon or Arya's endings, with both of them essentially living out separate exiles, are likely to have been in the outline Martin provided HBO, or just endings that made sense to the writers in the context of the show versions of those characters? I'm torn with Jon especially, because it seems like he *could* end up effectively becoming a wildling, but it also seems weirdly mundane for a boy that died and came back.
I think they have both good chances to be part of Martin’s outline. I’m less certain of Arya’s ending, because I don’t think the books have laid an adequate foundation yet for her eventually leaving Winterfell again to explore the world. Re: Jon’s endgame, I have mixed feelings. It’s a bit too circular to suit me (and I hate circular storytelling), but I also think it absolutely fits George’s definition of “bittersweet” ending, as well as his deconstruction of heroic tropes and chosen one narratives. The fact that it “seems weirdly mundane for a boy that died and came back” is exactly why I feel it works. Jon already had a climatic, sacrificial death, if you think about it. And if I’m being honest I’ve always felt that the three heads of the dragon riding into the sunset the curtain of light in a suicidal mission to destroy the heart of winter, and never coming back but being forever remembered as the saviors of humanity, was a bit too standard high fantasy to really fit George’s narrative. That’s not what I would call bittersweet---it’s highkey epic.
With this finale, on the other hand, you have the entire parabola of a hero: a secret prince who is raised as a bastard, joins the Night’s Watch, goes undercover as a Wildling, becomes lord commander, dies and resurrects; goes from war hero to king, from king to savior of humanity, from savior of humanity... to queenslayer and kinslayer, imprisoned and plagued by guilt, and eventually sentenced to go back to where he started---with the Free Folk, the people he initially was meant to defend the realm from, and now has to defend from the realm (because the realm corrupts, look what it did to him), and finally guide home.On the surface it’s a regression but it’s also him going back to where he actually had been at his happiest (even if at that time he was weighed down by too many oaths and unresolved business to notice), where he met his first love and what it meant to be free. Ironically, it’s the ending that fits most my own headcanon that Jon, Dany and Tyrion would all survive the WftD only to retire to a quiet place where they could heal, while the world would go on without them and slowly forget them, even. I wasn’t entirely sure of what they would need to heal from, when this idea formed in my mind. But the show provided an answer.
Overall, although this season was DEEPLY flawed, I could see George’s blueprint filtering through. In its basic concept, if not in the details and certainly not in the execution. It deals with the “what happens after the big heroic battle?” in the same brutally sincere and vaguely uncomfortable way I expect Martin to do. We thought the story ended with the WftD, we got a curveball instead. The main heroes survived relatively unscathed the battle against the Others, and then... Then they had to deal with what’s left. We thought the aftermath would simply be about mourning their losses and rebuilding, but instead it was about deep identity issues coming to a tragic climax for Dany, and the inability to cope with a world where the evil you know and have built your whole life around no longer exists for Jon. As I said many times, I don’t necessarily think the events will unfold in the books the way they did in the show---but the spirit, the intent, the main climatic and thematic beats behind this season, regardless of the execution, are something we should definitely look at when speculating about the books’ endgame.

Favorite Women (Spooky Edition)
Happy Halloween everyone! Inspired by the favorite fictional female characters polls that have been floating around (and because I couldn't limit myself to just one poll), I've decided 'tis the season for some EVUL* women!!!
*okay not evil. ur fave morally ambiguous antagonist is allowed
So here's the game: create a poll of however many favorite, evil, villainous, antagonistic, etc. fictional female characters you want. Then, tag some friends to spread the fun around!
Tumblr media
art credit because not everyone has official art: Madelyne Pryor by Don Aguillo, Raboniel by Caio Santos, and Cytherea by Perkaparka.
As for tagging: @fourspiceblend, @obstinateopal, @tsarinajissa, @youngerfrankenstein, and @zevfern
And fuckit. gonna spread the love and re-tag everyone from the original poll as well: @breadedsinner, @farsight-the-char, @mneiai, @orangedodge, and @usaigi
(as always, please don't feel like you have to play if you don't want to!)

I thought I could forgive the ending as an artistic misfire, but then there's that fight? I thought I could see him trying to be poignant, maybe setting up SoKai rescuing each other from death, and spending more time together on the journey than at home. But then he put Kairi in that fight, and it seemed like a joke. Everyone else got their moments, except for Kairi. Subbing out Kairi for Xion was practically an insult. Why have her on the team at all if it's just a trick bait-and-switch?
IDK sorry about that, I shouldn't have vented into your inbox like that
Don’t worry! I think most of us are still just very, very hurt and upset over the story :/
And you are completely right. Sokai rescuing each other from death? Hell, I would be hyped if that was it, but no, instead it’s gonna be the Sora-Riku-Show all over again and Kairi will wait at home, dutiful as ever even though she wants to protect Sora. But she is nowhere to be seen in the secret ending and Nomura doesn’t fucking care.
And don’t get me started on the Xion-swap out. It genuinely made me so pissed. The fact that Lea tells her to call him Axel only for this makes me pissed and then it doesn’t even get used for real. UGH WHY WHY WHY WHY WHY WHY WHY?????? Kairi could easily become as awesome as Aqua, she has the sass and spunk, but Nomura doesn’t care. Let’s be real, Kairi is only written well in KH1, she has her moments in KH2, but it feels like she’s been retroactively either written in our out of it, because the scenes she has, are amazing, she just lacks overall. But since then? Downfall.

orangedodge replied to your photo “honestly i haven’t put much thought into kitty being autistic but this...”
I've thought about it too, but haven't been 100% comfortable with it given that Kitty's problems with other kids come from bad behaviour on her end, that she's totally conscious of. She always knew she was being mean to Rahne and Dani, but was cruel anyway because she saw them as a threat to her place in the x-men. But then when she's out of that environment, and not holding on to being the genius mini-adult, she doesn't have those problems anymore.
that’s fair! personally i think this panel reads as much more far-reaching than just her attitude towards the new mutants - she’s speaking very generally about kids her own age and “outside the x-men” and while she is for sure reacting to a disastrous attempt to interact with the new mutants here, it sounds like she’s drawing on more than just that

Hey thanks for the clarification @orangedodge
i think contrary to kitty pryde magneto was resurrected with the help of blue marvel's technology and only his technology
magneto was spared from a resurrection through nazi tech compared to kitty and all the jewish mutants, scott summers, captain america (thanks for that nightcrawler), nightcrawler, ...
magneto is lucky even if for me, he got ruined him regardless... by spurrier. he had him take apocalypse's place at the crucible as he was the one to violently slay the cowering depowered mutants in the arena since en sabah nur left
Hi nonny.
Let me get this straight.................
So.....the ressurections plans Krakoa had...are from a Nazi?

orangedodge replied to your post “Roy Harper will be a series regular next season on Arrow”
I hope it means that we're going with "Thea is off with Nyssa, hunting ninjas" as how we write her out, instead of "she's too busy being married to Roy to visit"
I took comfort in knowing Thea got her happy ending with Roy. Now she’s just gone and caught up in more tumultuous drama thanks to Malcolm.
