This abandoned bathroom is a visual representation of neglect, with a sink that overflows, spilling dirty water onto the tiled floor. The water creates a haunting sense of decay, while the surrounding plants have overtaken the space—growing on the walls, ceiling, and everywhere in between. The abundance of greenery symbolizes nature's relentless persistence, asserting that it will continue to thrive, regardless of human presence or abandonment.

The room's most striking feature is the shattered mirrors above the sink, with shards of glass hanging from the ceiling, reflecting distorted, fragmented views of the space. These broken pieces amplify the room's eerie tone, making it feel like the space is slowly disintegrating. The dim, red lighting obscures the finer details of the room, leaving only silhouettes of objects, while everything seems bathed in an unsettling red hue.

Alina rushed in on that Monday morning, coffees almost overflowing from the lid openings in her haste.

“Sorry sorry!! Traffic was a nightmare and then, of course, there was someone new at Starbucks so Vasily’s drink was all wrong.” Alina apologized to Tamar as she tilted her head, gesturing toward the office.

She quickly set the tray and her things onto her desk and took the drink into Vasily who surprisingly was already in the office sitting across a pretty blonde agent she had seen before. Knocking gently, she took Vasily’s cue and entered.

“Hi Vasily. Sorry, I’m a few minutes late. Traffic was awful. Here is your coffee.” Alina was worried about the mood he’d be in.

“Alina, hi, that’s fine. Set it down there. Have you met Heleen van Houden? She’s one of the senior agents here.”

Even by the agency standards, she was striking. Tall with golden blonde hair piled up into a high updo. Smoothed face obviously chock full of fillers, but still relatively natural - her natural beauty still shown through. Highlighting her sophistication even more, she wore an emerald green silk top tied with a giant floppy pussy-bow at the neckline. Though she wasn’t young, her exposed fake-tanned arms were highly sculpted.

“Hi Alina. Nice to meet you. Nikolai’s friend right? I heard you want to be a screenwriter…” Heleen said warmly, reaching out a limp hand for Alina to shake.

Alina blushed a little that her career aspirations had already spread around the office. However, Heleen’s warm demeanor made her feel less embarassed by it.

“Yes I do. It’s very nice to meet you. Do let me know if I can help you with anything at all.”

Heleen nodded, “Thanks. Same for you. I have heard you are very hardworking. Both Vasily and Magnus have spoken highly of you. Door is always open for helping hardworking aspiring artists trying to break into the business. Just set some time with my assistant, Amy. We can have an informal informational.”

Alina’s face fully flushed now at that praise. She remembered what Tamar had told her about Heleen helping several of her assistants with breaking into the industry. “Thanks so much. I’ll leave you two now.” She backed out of the room and went to go sit back down.

[Kir-Bataar, Tamar]: What did you think of Heleen???

[Starkov, Alina]: Super impressive! She’s gorgeous.

[Kir-Bataar, Tamar]: Always good to be on her good side. She can make people’s dreams come true.

She actually came over with Aleksander and Magnus. They all worked together at CAA. She was a junior agent there - but quite a bit older than A. We can talk to Ivan at the drinks this week. You’re still coming, right? He has a TON of stories about her from when Fedyor was under her…

[Starkov, Alina]: Oh wow, I didn’t know so many people came over together.

And yes on drinks! I can’t wait.

[Kir-Bataar, Tamar]: The industry is super small, girl! Can’t burn any bridges - you never know where you will run into someone again!

On Tuesday morning, Alina was going through her emails and checking off the daily tasks when her phone pinged. It was Vasily.

Michael wants Wylan for his new film. I’ve already talked to Aleks but I need you to bring over the documents during their lunch today. Tamar can help you with that. thx.

Alina quickly went over to Tamar as it was already 10:30. She had to focus on work but just thinking about possibly meeting the Wylan van Eck almost brought her to her knees. She couldn’t even explain it but he was incredible. Any word he wrote was gold. Her favorite writer of all time.

“Ooh - that’s a huge get. I know Vasily was working on that for ages. Here, let me show you the files you need. You need the contract and also bring along the treatment. Yes, don’t ask. Michael already has a vision for it and wrote his own – I’m sure that will go over well with Wylan…” Tamar smirked a bit.

Alina quickly went back to her desk to figure out the contract. She pulled out the binder with all the training materials from Tamar. She had a thought as she worked and called out, “Wait, shit. I don’t know where they are meeting. Vasily didn’t say!”

“Don’t worry, just check with Ivan!”

[Starkov, Alina]: Hey - I need to drop something off today to Aleksander at his lunch with Wylan. Do you know where they are going?

[K, Ivan]: hey girl, whats up? Oh - they are going to Cecconi’s. Res is at 12:30.

[Starkov, Alina]: thanks so much. See you Friday! :)

Alina jumped out of the Uber right at 12:30 on the dot. Cecconi’s was one of the biggest industry hangouts in town. There were restaurants that celebs went to and then there were restaurants that celebs went to with their agents to ink a deal and this was one of the latter. She pushed through the array of aggressive paparazzi standing out front, who stepped away disappointedly when she exited the car. Nevertheless, she was grateful she had one one of her nicer new outfits today. High ponytail with a sleek black Rag and Bone dress.

“May I help you?” A bored hostess asked her as she entered the expansive dining room.

“Hi, I am here to drop something off for Aleksander Morozova?” Alina inquired, scanning the room herself and trying to place him in the bright and busy restaurant.

The hostess instantly stood up straighter and gave her a once over - now suddenly brimming with attentiveness. “Right this way - Mr. Morozova is at his usual table.”

The hostess weaved through the packed tables of tourists near the entrance, all hoping for a sighting, to the quieter, more subdued back area with the tables a lot more spread out. In the corner of the open-aired conservatory, she spotted Aleksander and Wylan. Although she was right on time, they were already deep in conversation with martinis in hand.

Alina mumbled a thanks to the hostess and walked briskly up to the table. They both looked up at her approach. Aleksander’s face was his usual impassive calm. He was more casual today though - navy shirt that was maybe linen or something more relaxed, which he also exuded as the top buttons were undone. Small peek of tanned smooth skin, the notch between his clavicles seemingly extra deep from his broad shoulders. Wylan just looked cool. No other way to say it. Deep undercut crowned by a mass of honey golden curls in a messy, no fucks given artist kind of way. However, his warm blue eyes and nice broad smile that reached them gave away his real self – his kindness and sweet innocence and that somehow made him look younger. His youthful look accentuated by his own casual outfit; he wrote a Ami Paris t-shirt with complimenting Off-White zip-up hoodie over it.

“Sorry to interrupt. Hi Aleksander - Excuse me, but I have the papers from Vasily for you regarding Michael’s project…” Alina ventured. She hadn’t spoken to him since that meeting. When she went to drop off the contracts, he was on a call and she had left them with Ivan. There was a quick glance through the glass but that’s it.

“Where is Tamar? I thought she would be bringing those…well, you’re here now. Let’s see them then.” Dripping with condescension, Aleksander took the yellow file. He opened it glanced quickly at the front page of the pack of papers before sliding them back in and setting it on the table.

Alina’s dormant anger flared. His tone was beyond her. How could he speak like that all the time?

Continuing on, “Wy- this is Alina Starkov. She’s Vasya’s new assistant…she wants to be a screenwriter. She’s got some great ideas. You remember just starting out right? Maybe you can speak to her…”

Wait. What. In her silent fuming, she had missed part of what he had said. Hearing him talk about her now, she snapped back to attention. At the one hand, why was he speaking for her. Explaining her story, unbidden, to someone else. How could he volunteer information he didn’t even know? But also, was he actually trying to be nice? Her anger settled, blooming into confusion as she stared at him turned toward Wylan.

“Really nice to meet you, Alina. That’s great to hear! Everyone wants to be an actor or something but we need more good writers! Happy to chat through your ideas or how the process works.” Wylan said. His keen gaze and easy smile was reassuring, cutting through the arrogant ice coming from the other end of the table.

“Actually, Alina - can you join us now? We just have to go through Michael’s contract but it’s a pretty casual lunch…” Aleksander waved his hand gesturing for another menu and place setting as an attentive waiter sped over immediately.

Alina’s bewilderment and rage completely dissipated in a poof of smoke to be replaced by pure shock. What had just happened in the past 10 seconds?

In her disbelief, she barely managed to string a sentence together. “Uh…yes…I…sure.”

Sitting down she stared at the menu – a jumble of black incomprehensible text as she tried to wrap her head around what was happening. She looked up slowly when Aleksander spoke.

“So, do you know what you want - Wylan? Alina? Excuse me, we’re ready.”

Alina sat there, stunned into silence. She only spoke up to order - mumbling about the kale pesto - but let Wylan and Aleksander speak. She still couldn’t believe she was sitting there with them and felt out of place. Did he always invite assistants to his lunches? And she was still trying to piece together the last few moments, replaying every word he had said. Was there a possibility she had mistakenly read his cold tone and married it with a personality trait that wasn’t there?

“…and yes, let’s get a bottle of the usual - right, Wy? - yes, a bottle of your Barbera please.”

Alina studied his face as he spoke. Impassive at always, it gave nothing away as he spoke to the waiter, gesturing at items on the menu.

“So Alina, tell me everything. Where did you go - what are you working on. Let’s hear it all.” Wylan said after trying the wine and nodding his approval to the sommelier.

“Umm…so I just finished my MFA at USC. I started at LMA a couple months ago. I try to write as much as I can on the weekends. I currently have a screenplay going that’s a YA fantasy.”

Wylan nodded approvingly. “That’s great. Another fellow Trojan…And YA is so hot right now. Every studio is looking for fresh content in that area. Let me know when you’re ready and I’m happy to give it a look over. I’m sure Aleks would also. ”

She just nodded, completely dazed that her hero just asked to read her story. Luckily, she was saved by the arrival of the food.

Speaking slowly putting down his fork, Aleksander responded, “Yes. Alina - feel free to send me what you have. I can read it on my flight. We can chat about it when I’m back - I understand Ivan has booked time for us next week.”

More to Wylan, he continued, now turning toward his client, “I’m heading to New York tomorrow to meet with James. We are getting nowhere with the terms and this is even if I don’t take my plus ten…I don’t know if we can hit our number…”

As he continued on to Wylan, Alina sat back, grateful for the pause in attention, utterly overwhelmed by the diverse gamut of emotions that just surged through her. Had she just been too quick in assessing him? His tone still bit at her and stoked her rage, but at the same time, she was sitting here with her hero, talking about her screenplay. Nikolai had said that he was inherently nice. Had she misjudged him from the start?

She looked up finally and he was staring at her. She returned the look poring over the details of his face. Eyes were the same depthless black as always, but there was an unidenfiable glint there. Something that disrupted the usual smooth, glassy surface. Aleksander held his gaze continuing to speak to Wylan. Alina finally breaking to look down at her pasta. Aleksander puzzled her. She made a mental note to ask Ivan about it at the drinks.

The rest of the lunch passed quietly. Overrun with the toll of her emotions and simply feeling out of place with these two eminent figures, Alina mostly kept quiet. She answered a few more questions from Wylan about her screenplay. She was surprised to be able to hold her own and answer his questions and was rewarded with several good tips for her project.

After Aleksander paid, they lingered outside a moment waiting for their cars. Alina stood awkwardly a bit apart, unsure if she should make her own way back to the office.

“Alina, you’re going back to the office, right? I can take you back. Wy - thanks for this. I’ll keep you posted on James tomorrow.” Aleksander gave him a quick handshake, pulling into a one-armed hug.

“Thanks, Aleks. Alina, it was a pleasure to meet you. Good luck with everything and I’m sure we will speak soon. If you need anything, Aleks knows how to reach me.” Wylan reached out his hand to Alina. His boyish smile pasted across his face. His driver pulled up and with the door held open, he gave a small wave before sliding into the back.

Alina wasn’t sure what she expected Aleksander to drive as the dark graphite BMW X5 pulled up. The valet hurried out and went around to the passenger side to let her in. She slid into the luxurious black leather and put her seatbelt on. Although the air conditioning was blowing lightly, she felt really hot - this was a really small enclosed space to be in alone with Aleksander. He tipped the valet handsomely and closed the door.

They drove without speaking for several minutes. As he turned onto Robertson, the click of the turn signal permeated the silence, as if breaking the seal for the two of them.

“Thanks for coming, Alina. We needed those contracts and appreciate you rushing them over. I hope it was useful for you to meet Wylan. Your piece sounds really interesting and I think it could really go somewhere.” Aleksander continued looking straight ahead, eyes on the road. In a way, it settled Alina a bit. The thought of eye contact in such close proximity made her a bit nauseous.

For a man of few words, that was a high praise. Alina looked out her window at a lady walking a tiny dog, rendered speechless. “Thank you so much for inviting me to lunch. You didn’t have to do that and it was amazing talking to Wylan. His tips were really useful.”

“Magnus speaks highly of you and we both want you to succeed…”

Alina turned and looked over in surprise. We? She had to say something. They only had a few interactions so far - and they were neutral at best. This seeming onslaught of praise was too much.

“You…you two talk about me?” That was all she could muster.

“Magnus has been speaking about you since before you started. You clearly have an invaluable cheerleader there. I’ve seen your work ethic at the office and I know you have the discipline for this industry. If there is talent too, as Magnus believes, you can go far...

...So I wanted to test you. People say that I am cold or snobbish, but I wanted to see how you would do. There will be many obstacles in your way for this path and I wanted to see how you would take it. I was already prepared to help you but I didn’t want to hand it over on a silver platter. Too many people in this industry expect that…And plenty of talented people have lost their way, being praised and coddled too early on in their careers.”

Alina leaned back, completely paralyzed, relying on the molded seat to keep her upright. Her heart pounded, going a million beats per second. Any tinge of warmth she felt earlier burst into pure fire. Her cheeks were red and she felt the heat pulsing. She hoped he couldn’t see her face right now. Continuing to look straight ahead, the thoughts ran through her brain. So, he was trying to help after all. Her hot discomfort was, she hated to acknowledge it, partially at her own embarrassment for judging him.

As Aleksander pulled into his partner parking spot right by the elevators, Alina was dying to get out. After his confession, she hadn’t responded and he, perhaps sensing her distress, had mercifully remained silent.

They entered the elevator standing side by side, arms close but not touching. Still, she could sense him right there. As the doors closed, she willed herself to speak. “Thank you for the ride, Aleksander. And thanks again for lunch…and everything.”

“It’s my pleasure, Alina. Have a look at the suggestions Wylan mentioned and we can discuss everything next week.”

The elevator dinged on the 19th floor. Alina got out and turned and looked back at Aleksander. He stood tall and attractive, hands in pockets. He gave a small nod as the doors closed.

The rest of the week passed - busy but uneventfully. In the blink of an eye it was Friday already. There was a certain buzz around the assistants by 3pm in anticipation of drinks. By 6:30, they were all seated in Pink Taco in two big connecting banquettes. Although most of the 19th floor assistants were there, it was a smaller group than usual apparently. And luckily for Alina, she had met most of them before. It was fun chatting and hearing about all the various celeb run-ins - whether positive or negative. By 8, people were starting to filter out to other plans and obligations. Ivan, Tamar and Alina had moved down to one end of the banquette to chat further about her lunch with Aleksander. There were only a few others left but they all worked with agents Alina didn’t know. They seemed to be on a different sort of note, shot after shot and were getting quite rowdy at the other end of the table. The three of them cheersed the wild bunch politely but continued their more subdued conversation.

“So he offered to help? That’s so great, Lin.” Ivan said taking a big swig out of his skinny margarita.

“Ya, I don’t know what to make of it after our disaster first meeting. And I’m just in shock that he was actually being helpful. I don’t that I have done anything to deserve it? I feel bad that I thought he was a dick. Still, it was super kind though and Wylan was really nice. It was so crazy to meet him up close though - my hand was shaking!”

“He mentioned you were at the lunch and were really well-spoken and clear about your script. Seemed driven, he said. I told you before, but he’s actually super super nice. Don’t let that icy exterior fool you. He’s super work-focused but he’s done Fed and I so many solids in the past. And as you know, I thought I’d be fired or transferred when we started dating. I think since he didn’t grow up with a lot of family and he’s worked a lot, he just isn’t great with his social skills…or even forming polite sentences. It’s just his bedside manner needs work, but the heart is there…” Ivan laughed at his own joke.

Alina contemplated. His words from the car weighed heavy on her that entire week. A burden that encircled her like a cloud. She hadn’t told these two all the finer details of the car ride but had quickly shared with her roommates and Nikolai and they had dissected every word. Nikolai wasn’t shocked at all. Gen and Zo were impressed. As her closest friends, there was no harsh assessment on her initial bias. But they agreed, a change in attitude was in order. But the takeaway that truly made her think — that stopped her in her tracks — was that he wanted her to succeed. On her own - with no shortcuts. She wanted that too but she wouldn’t expect that from someone else, let alone him.

And the fact that he was already doing so much to try to help warmed her to him. Especially when he didn’t really know her - or had read a single word of her writing. He was going off his gut - and his first impression of her. It shamed her to think of her initial prejudice and now she definitely saw him in a different light. Nothing had inherently changed - his emails were still the epitome of formal business tone, but the new understanding she had of him allowed her to read his actions and words differently.

“Haven’t you heard ‘don’t judge a book by its cover, Alina?” Ivan offered, pulling her out of her musings.

“Haha, lesson learned. And you’re right. I probably judged too quickly.”

“Can I get that in writing? Tam knows that I am ALWAYS right.” He smirked

Tamar rolled her eyes at him before turning back to Alina earnestly. “If he offered to help, you should take advantage. Like I told you, he never helps anyone. It was always just Heleen but he most definitely has much more sway. Oh my god, you’re going to be famous!”

Alina pinked as Ivan chimed in, “Just send him an email with it so he can take a look while he’s gone. He asked me to book the meeting in for next Thursday when he’s back from New York. Just send it this weekend so he can read it on the plane back or in between meetings.”

“Morning, morning!” Tamar said as she blazed in on Monday. Alina had covered for her on the early shift this morning so Tamar could run an errand for Vasily.

As Tamar set down Alina’s iced coffee, she rested on the desk for a moment. “Did you hear they moved the premiere of Kaz’s new film? It’s going to be on Friday now! Your first one at the office. And that is a good one…you’re so lucky!”

“Oh, what is it? Do we have to work?” Alina inquired.

“It’s for his new one, Crow Club. Normally, only the agents go unless there is space. But because we are one of the main sponsors, all the assistants for the lead agents on it get to go! You and me, Ivan and some others will be there. It’s super fun as you can imagine. Open bar, seeing all the actors up close, all the agents in action, it’s fun! Ugh, but I have nothing to wear. My girlfriend will kill me if I buy another new outfit…”

“Oh shit, same. I think I might have to get something from my roommate. She has a great wardrobe.”

“That’s so lucky. We aren’t the same size or have the same style. But I’ll figure it out.”

The office was abuzz with the prospect of the premiere. The events team looked haggard every time Alina saw them in the hallways and she never saw a single PR person without a phone glued to their ear that entire week. Truth be told, she was pretty excited. She told Genya and Zoya right away and Monday evening, they went through Genya’s entire closet already.

On Tuesday evening, just as Alina arrived home around 8, she got a text from an unknown 310 number. She turned off the engine and stayed sitting in the car, clicking open the chat. In the darkening night, her face was bathed in the glow from the blue light.

Alina’s heart skipped a beat. Her immediate thought was that she had heard his closer colleagues call him by his nickname but she had never spoken to him this casually. Her second reaction was a bit of relief. True to her word and from the pressure of her friends, both in and out of work, she had sent over her latest draft to Aleksander on Sunday afternoon. She hadn’t heard back from him and thought he wasn’t interested.

After much deliberation, she settled on a response. She should really go inside and see if Zoya or Genya were there to help, but she remained rooted to the seat.
