The Superb Owl cometh.

The Owl is here. After all, there are owls, and then there are Owls. This would be the latter.    This is the superb owl. You may not like it, but this is what peak owl performance looks like. After 32 owls, a playoff between 12, and the final between the two elite competitors, we have this year's champion at last.   Just kidding—all owls are superb. Every last one: barn, snowy, great grey, or boreal, it matter not. So, to celebrate the arrival of all of this year's exemplary specimens, we have gathered a selection of these beloved (and mostly) nocturnal friends. Starting with this pal, who looks like an apple.

I once got drunk and heard owls calling from my front door after dark. I got excited and did my best barred owl call, got a response, and got so excited that I spent the next forty-five minutes hooting back and forth at what I THINK were a barred owl and great horned owl while my partner repeatedly told me to stop hooting on the front porch and come back inside.

A couple weeks ago I was practicing my owl calls on a night hike and I successfully called in a barred owl. My owl call is pretty good, but I've never called an owl to me from afar because I rarely do night hikes and so I don't get much chance to. I had expected to be really excited about this, especially since two of my coworkers are really skilled at owl calls and they don't usually get a response, much less a full conversation, but instead I felt so guilty. I eventually had to start ignoring this poor deceived owl that was following my call through the park. I felt like I catfished him.

Once, I encountered the funny story of an AI image descriptor with a sheep obsession. It had been trained on pictures of fields of sheep. Therefore, it tagged anything in a field as 'sheep', including an empty field, because they work on statistical probability. Therefore, it thinks "ah, a field! there's probably a sheep here." (It's a bit more complicated but basically that.) It also couldn't recognise sheep in places that weren't fields, such as petrol stations or barns. [cont]

Now, the alarming aspect of this story is that the very same technology is probably what tumblr is using to identify porn. Now, if it can’t tell that an empty field is not, in fact, full of sheep, what hope do we have that it can’t tell an empty room isn’t full of writing human forms engaged in passionate coitus?
