The North Wind and the Sun
Sun asked North Wind, Hey, wanna make a bet? Word, said Wind. Well, just check out that dude in the coat. Bet you can’t make him take it off faster than me. Fffttt.Watch this. So Wind started blowing, just a little at first. No big deal, but the guy buttoned up his coat. So he blew harder. But the dude, we’ll call him Steve, put up his collar, shoved his hands in his pockets, and actually leaned into Wind. Mad now, Wind let him have it. Dust stung Steve’s eyes, so he pulled down his hat, tucked his hands under his arms, hugging his coat even closer.
All done? Sun asked sweetly. Wind huffed and panted, but grudgingly gave over. Sun started grinning, gently warming the now chilled Steve. You know what happened next, right? Steve relaxed, dropped his hands, put down his collar, even undid a button or two. Rubbing her hands together, Sun really smiled now. Steve unbuttoned the rest. Sun laughed. You know what good ol’ Steve did, right? Took off his coat, slung it over his shoulder, even started whistling as he continued walking, practically skipping, on down the road.
Moral? Make a man think it’s his idea, and he’ll do whatever you want.

Day Twenty-Nine: The Birth of Yearning
The Birth of Yearning #photography #poetry #NaPoWriMo #PADChallenge #AtoZChalleng
Yearning by Maria L. Berg 2022 Yearning Yearning is a deep longing: a strong, persistent craving or desire accompanied by tenderness or sadness for something unattainable or distant. Thinking about how to represent yearning, I thought about how the other abstract nouns I’ve explored this month are entangled with yearning: Ambition, Goals, Ideas, Needs and Hopes can induce yearning; people yearn…

It is constant, the story Their story, The one you become a part of When facades fall And the mighty stumble. We all have our moments of struggle Our days of pain But even the moments of the mundane Out number them Like their lives Even the struggle is beautiful And the will to persevere Is the only happy ending we need. Toenails
Just one time I clipped the little piggy too close. Then, crying, blood, salve, and Batman bandaid. Now, every time I try to trim them, "You did it! You hurt me! Don't! Don't do it!" My three year old's sharp, convicting accusations just kill me, pierce my heart like velociraptor’s claws once hidden inside Wolverine socks. He's right, though. I did it, but he forgets that he wiggled after I told him "Be a statue. Be perfectly still." Nope. He's a big, nervous chicken clucking “don't-don't don't-don't don't-don't you do it!” All he'll ever remember is my betrayal, the failed attempt at loving care, the shock of pain, and the blood of just that one time every single time.

Day Seventeen: Mysteries of the Mind
Mysteries of the Mind #NaPoWriMo #PADChallenge #photography #poetry #collage
This is the third Sunday of the of the month, and there is no A to Z on Sundays, so today’s photo-challenge is a little different. I’ll be using the photos I took this week to create visual poems guided by a homograph. In Mind by Maria L. Berg 2022 Mind Looking back at this week’s abstract nouns, my mind has been filled with: ideas, joy, kindness, luck, motivation, and need. That’s a lot to…

Posted today's prompt earlier. The Guidelines for the 10th (10 years already?) April PAD Challenge for latecomer NaPoWriMo/GloPoWriMo.
Robert Lee Brewer has been hosting this particular challenge for 10 years. And yes, it’s my 10th year participating.

It would serve me well to pay attention to the lessons my mother taught me. "The more you pick the scab, the worse the scar will be." Still, I am driven to be my own undoing. I can't pretend it's not there, that I don't care. That the hurt never happened. Skin may heal, pink and new But the scabs of the heart seldom do. They grow and fester Become wounds to the mind So while we may go days thinking everything's fine We're doomed to bleed again.
