Description

Élisabeth Vigée Le Brun, the daughter of a minor painter, Louis Vigée, was born and brought up in Paris. She became a member of the Académie de St-Luc in 1774 and of the French Academy in 1783. She was a highly fashionable portrait painter, patronized particularly by Queen Marie Antoinette. Between 1789 and 1805 she travelled in Europe and visited Russia.

Elisabeth Louise Vigée Le Brun (16 April 1755 – 30 March 1842), also known as Louise Élisabeth Vigée Le Brun or simply as Madame Le Brun, was a French painter who mostly specialized in portrait painting, in the late 18th and early 19th centuries.

Her artistic style is generally considered part of the aftermath of Rococo with elements of an adopted Neoclassical style. Her subject matter and color palette can be classified as Rococo, but her style is aligned with the emergence of Neoclassicism.

The Oppenheimer quote above is often misinterpreted to seem as if he was boasting when he said this. In reality what’s more likely is that, it touches on regret and remorse in the face of what he had created. It felt like a fitting parallel for Viktor’s character arc and his quote that in the pursuit of greatness he and Jayce had forgotten to do good.
