Distribution: Found mainly in Central and South America, from Texas and Mexico down to Chile.

Habitat: Found only in tropical rainforests.

Diet: Caterpillars feed on poisonous plants of the genus Cestrum; adults mainly drink nectar from flowers of the genus Lantana, but occasionally consume flowers or bird feces.

Description: The most striking feature of the glasswing butterfly's is certainly its transparent wings, which allows it to blend into its surroundings when it flies. This transparency stems from its unique structure: the wing is made up of nanopillars, which don't tend to absorb, scatter or refract light. There are also tiny hairs called microtrichia at their surface, which reduces the roughness of the wings.

During mating season, glasswing butterflies form leks, which are large gatherings where males compete for mates. During these gatherings, males release pheromones, but also display themselves in order to woo females. This species is polygynous, which means the males are not only competing for one mate, but for as many as they can get.

A uréia é um dos produtos químicos de arte mais importantes produzidos em todo o mundo. É usado como fertilizante, usado como adição de combustível à resina sintética e produção explosiva e gás de ex -expest limpo. A uréia também é considerada um possível bloco de construção -chave para a formação de moléculas biológicas como RNA e DNA relacionado à fonte da vida. Até agora, a fonte da própria uréia não foi claramente clara na própria terra.

Uma equipe de pesquisa, liderada pela professora Ruth Signoral, da ETH Zurique, descobriu uma resposta anteriormente desconhecida à formação de uréia, que pode responder. O estudo acaba de ser publicado na revista CiênciaO

Química na superfície da água

A amônia (NH₃) e o dióxido de carbono (CO2) requerem alta pressão e temperatura ou catalisadores químicos para produzir a indústria da uréia. As enzimas permitem a mesma reação entre seres humanos e animais, removendo a amônia tóxica da quebra de proteínas como a uréia. Como essa molécula comum contém nitrogênio e carbono, e talvez exista no mundo primário, muitos pesquisadores veem a uréia como um potencial antecessor de biomologias complexas.

“Mostramos uma maneira de nossa pesquisa em que o prebiótico da uréia pode ser formado em nossa pesquisa”, diz Signoral – “onde as moléculas de água entram em contato com o gás atmosférico: na superfície da água”.

O forno na beira de uma gota

A equipe da Signoral estudou pequenas gotas de água no spray do mar e nevoeiro fino. Os pesquisadores observaram que a uréia pode se formar espontaneamente a partir de dióxido de carbono (CO2) e amônia (NH) na camada superficial das fontes sob a superfície dos pães. A interface física entre o ar e o fluido cria um ambiente químico especial na superfície da água que torna possível a resposta espontânea.

Como existe uma área superficial muito grande relacionada ao volume de uma queda, as reações químicas ocorrem principalmente perto dessa superfície. Nesta região, os gradientes de densidade química se formam, que age como um reator microscópico. O gradiente de pH cria o ambiente ácido necessário em toda a camada inter -ana de gotas de água, que abre os caminhos convencionais que, de outra forma, ocorrem nos líquidos.

“O aspecto significativo dessa reação é que ela ocorre nas condições circundantes sem energia externa”, Merced Mohajar explicou um dos dois primeiros escritores a Azizbig.
