You can't take "Tillerson worked for Exxon Mobile" and "Russia wants to drill some oil" and then come out with "So that means Trump and Putin colluded to rig the election so that this deal can go through." There are so many critical assumptions being made that this sounds like some tin foil hat nonsense. Some Dems (to their credit -- not all of them do this) are so desperate to tie Trump to Putin that they are willing to assume anything and everything in order to get to the conclusion they want to reach. Extraordinary claims require extraordinary proof. It's more than just playing "7 Degrees to Russia." It's a prime example of drawing the conclusion first and then building the argument up in reverse from there. The more logical fact pattern is that Tillerson is a wildly successful businessman, and Trump wants his SOS to be someone who knows how to cut a good deal for the benefit of the US. Not to mention the myriad other ways Putin would gain; end to US opposition to Assad in Syria, reduced American support for NATO, easing of American criticism of Russian human rights abuses/war crimesthrough the UN, etc etc .... Which are likely to be of equal or greater importance to Putin's geopolitical interests. The claim that the Russian government has a huge amount to gain from Trump's victory is entirely uncontroversial. The claim that the Trump campaign colluded with the Russians in any way is unfounded, but there is at leastcircumstantial evidence that raises questions. Questions the FBI felt the need to investigate. Moreover, the fact he has refused to disclose his tax returns raises further questions about the possibility that Trump might have financial incentives to act in Russia's interests. A bipartisan group of U.S. senators, including Mitch McConnell, have now called for thorough investigations into the matter. What is suspicious is that Donald Trump and his staff seem hostile to the mere suggestion that investigations should take place and refuse to accept the overwhelming consensus among U.S. intelligence professionals that the Russian government directed efforts to hack U.S. political institutions and to destabilize the American political system. As President, shouldn't the security of American democratic institutions from foreign intervention be one of his top priorities?
