Ross Lake Wildlife Area West Hydell Road Chillicothe, Ohio Ross Lake is a reservoir in Ross County, Ohio, in the United States. The reservoir was created in 1967 and took its name from Ross County. Ross Lake is located within the 1,112-acre Ross Lake Wildlife Area. This public area is in Springfield Township, Ross County, approximately three miles east of Chillicothe. Easy access is available from U.S. 35 via the East Main Street exit and Blacksmith Hill Road (C-238), approximately one mile east of U.S. 35. The boat ramp and main fishing area is located off of West Hydell Road (Township Road 238). The east side of the lake is reached by continuing north past West Hydell Road to Seney Road. Turn right and travel to Musselman Mill Road and take it to East Hydell Road (Township Road 238). The 125-acre lake lies in the comparatively shallow Lick Run valley between steep slopes and flat-topped hills which are covered by brushlands, old fields, and mature woodlands. More than half the land is wooded; oak and hickory are the most common upland hardwoods, along with lesser numbers of beech and sugar maple. Elm, ash, and maple are the major bottomland hardwoods. Patches of red and white pine have been planted in reverting upland fields. One-fifth of the area consists of reverting old fields with a mixture of shrubby coverts and native grasses. Hawthorn, wild crabapple, sumac, blackberry, and Japanese honeysuckle are important wildlife food plants in and along these old fields. Nearly one-fifth of the land is maintained as openland. A medium-size lake fished mostly by locals for catfish. Ross Lake is an Ohio Division of Wildlife lake that was impounded strictly for fishing purposes, leaving a great deal of standing timber and old structures in place. Shoreline access is limited to the two entry roads that come in from the east and west. A boat ramp is located on West Hydell Road, as are two rock fishing piers, one of which is wheelchair accessible. A third stone pier is located at the end of East Hydell Road, on the opposite side of the lake. Ross Lake averages 10 to 20 feet deep and has typical shoreline structure of fallen treetops, old stumps, and roadbeds. Over the years the Division of Wildlife has placed over 500 Christmas trees in the lake and has felled over 50 shoreline trees to provide fish habitat. It has been said that fish caught from Ross Lake have stocked over 100 local farm ponds. Key species: Largemouth bass, channel catfish, bluegill, crappie.
