Local Area Network war seiner Zeit maßgeblich ein Thema wenn man Client-Server Anwendungen nutzen konnte. Ich erinnere mich noch gut zurück an diese Zeit als ich ein Warenwirtschaftssystem nutze, welches ein Server und eine Client Version hatte. Vier oder fünf Computer, damals Windows Computer nutze ich in meiner kleinen Firma und konnte so von jedem dieser Rechner das Programm aufrufen und nutzen. An eine Nutzung des Internets, wie wir es heute kennen warr nicht zu denken. Verbunden waren die Rechner mit Koaxial-Kabel und sogenannten BNC Steckern, die dann auch einen Abschlusswiederstand brauchten.

Das waren noch lustige Zeiten und ein solches Computenetzwerk war damals topmodern und auf der höhe der Zeit. Die ersten Laptob hatten noch schwarz/weiss Displays. Die Übertragungsraten waren nicht hoch, es reichte aber für das was man da tun musste absolut aus. Später hielten Patchkabel Einzug mit den typisch grimbbaren Steckern, die wir zuvor auch schon vom Telefon her kannten. Die Entwicklung schreitete voran, doch dies war was das Kabel anging eine eher nicht sichbare Veränderung.

Heute sind sogenannte Cat7 Kabel der Stand der Dinge und wir sprechen von maximalen Übertragungsraten von einem Gigabit/s bei Ethernet Kabelverbindungen, die oftmals bereits bei kleinen Netzwerken schon über Switche an den Router gelangen und den Zugang zum Internet erlauben. Die Anwendungen laufen heute auf einem Server in der Cloud und die Geräte sind kaum noch die sperrigen Kisten auf oder unter dem Schreibtisch, sonder schlanke Notebooks, Tablets und Smartphones.

Dabei verfügen die modernen Computersysteme und sogenannten mobile Devices, wie Tablets nicht mehr über eine Buchse um überhaupt ein LAN Kabel anzuschließen. WAN, also Wide Area Network ist da noch ein Thema. Dabei verbinden wir Netzwerke über bspw. Router miteinander. Unser Anschluss im Fall von Glasfaser bis hin zum Netzwerk des Anbieters ist bspw. schon ein WAN.

Auch ich habe heute mein Chromebook immernoch mit einem LAN Kaabel über einen Switch mit meinem Router verbunden. Dabei muss ich bei meinem Chromebook einen USB-Adapter nutzen, denn das Gerät verfügt auch über keinen eigenen LAN Anschluss mehr. Diese Komponenten hindern die Hersteller daran, die Geräte schlank zu machen und den zur Verfügung stehenden Platz optimal auszunutzen. Und schlie0lich bietet der neue USB Standard es auch solche Verbindungen herzustellen.

Heute ist das Maß aller Dinge WLAN, Wireless Local Area Network. Kabellos lassen sich mit hochen Übertragungsraten Computer, Smartphones und Tablet und alles andere viel einfacher, schneller und preiswerter mit dem Router und damit dem Internet verbinden. Lokale Anwendungen machen kaum noch Sinn und selbst wenn es um Storage oder Drucker etc. handelt, ist dies heute drahtlos zu machen. Es gibt noch ein paar Punkte bei denen es ggf. noch hilfreich und wertvoll ist auf eine LAN Verbindung zurückgreifen zu können.

Heute in Zeiten globaler Kriesen und Kriegsgeschehen hat das Internet und die Cloud App einen Rückschlag erhalten. Wir müssten dazu alle Sat-Lösungen haben, um hier auf der sicheren Seite zu sein bzw. sicherer zu sein. Wenigstens als Backup auch wenn es zukünftig eher die Standard-Lösung sein wird und Glasfaser sich zum Backup wandeln dürfte. Allein wie sich unsere Netzwerke im Laufe der letzten Jahre verändert haben ist schon spannend.

Bei kabelgebundenen Netzwerken gibt es aber auch einige Dinge mehr zu beachten. Oft sind alte Kabel im Einsatz oder Einstellungen im Switch oder Router nicht optimiert und wir haben uns schnell Falschenhälse und Hindernisse eingebaut. Kupfer aber ist heute auch ein wertvoller Rohstoff und es macht langfristig gesehen auch nicht viel Sinn uns noch weiterhin Kupferkäfige zu bauen nur um mit einem Computer ins Internet zu kommen.
