So, I was unhappy with my prior posts on this topic, both because of the song choices I made and because I didn't properly credit the musicians behind them. Ergo, I'm going to compile all of the brawlers into a single list below the cut, and then update and reblog this post each time a new brawler is released.

Mister X came to Apple once, from Canada. He was not a nice man. He wanted $30,000 to launch a new concept in retailing furniture. He had short black flat lacquered hair and glasses and from the back his head looked like Rudolf Hess. He wore bell-bottomed purple or green trousers, and carried a briefcase and several grudges. One grudge was that he had been in England five days and no one from Apple would see him. This was conveyed to me by someone in the next phone booth to X’s somewhere in Chelsea who was eavesdropping on X and learned that he was planning to do Apple ‘some harm’. Dark threat, darkly offered and wilily eavesdropped. I, not anxious for Apple to be harmed, found X and called him up to the throne-room where he created so many instant and bad vibrations that I knocked over a cup of tea. Mister X said he was from Canada and he had come all the way from Canada and he was not going to be fucked about. No sir. If we were as good as we said we were, and as honest and forward-looking as we said we were, and if we were as groovy and hip as we claimed to be, then, oh boy, we had no alternative but to bankroll Clive X to the tune of thirty grand, yes sir! Do, he said. Well, well, well, we said. We said it was clearly a trap and faced with the choice of coming off like good honest forward-looking groovy hip guys (and handing over the bread which said we were all of those things), and with coming off like shits, I took the latter route and Mr X was quick to tell us we were shits.
I said I would have taken the other route, had I had the 30 gs, but I had only eight shillings and an ounce of hash. Mr X said he was not going to get bogged down by a lot of dumb people who couldn’t see what a fine deal he was offering. I said I could sympathise with that. ‘You have no intelligence,’ he told me and I nodded. ‘And you have no honesty,’ he said. This was true, I agreed, inviting Mr X to leave. ‘Your vibes are very bad,’ I said trendily, ‘and you are a cunt.’ Mr X said he would prefer to finish his drink and then find someone with some decency and common sense who could dig his furniture scheme and get the Beatles to hand over the bread. Maybe, too, he would like a ceremony with his own photographer there to capture on film the smiles and handshakes as ‘John, Paul, George and Ringo, yes, folks, the Beatles, hand over a cheque for $30,000 to Canada’s brilliant Mr X.’ Or something of the sort, I thought, reaching for the intercom button. Mr X sat bolt upright drinking his drink in nervous sips, looking fiercely around the room at a forest of badly vibed heads. He was clearly feeling very good. The negative buzz was flowing like molten honey through his system. The voice of Silly Jimmy came on the intercom. ‘Yes?’ ‘Mr X, who is in my room, wishes to be assisted to leave,’ I said. Mr X couldn’t have felt better and he smiled broadly and said, ‘This is what I suspected,’ and I said it was great that he’d found what he’d come for. So many people left Apple disappointed, it was good that he had found what he expected, suspected. He was assisted out, and he looked very like Rudolph Hess as he left the room with Silly Jimmy helping him on his way back to Canada. He gave an interview later, to the Toronto Globe and together he and the writer concluded that the Apple was rotten at the core. A few weeks later, Mr X’s negative buzz alighted on the negative antenna of a man named Mr Z, also from Canada. Mr Z arrived at Apple, but couldn’t get in on account of I had told the receptionist to keep him out because Mr Z generated problems like a fly spreads disease.

lots of love for Paul in the house tonight!!
for the Paul song you got: Haunted House by Lee Oskar
youtube
the only lyrics are just "You remind me of a haunted house I once was in..." HUGE paul/donovan track for me. funk song about architecture? sign me up
and THEN for kit yayyyy kit you get: Sycamore Trees by Jimmy Scott
youtube
lots of kit's playlist ended up being moody jazz, and this is perhaps the moodiest jazz of them all. mostly for vibes but the twin peaks connection IS there (fbi agent). also with the running around and discovering terrible things in the woods

'The film: Writer-director Andrew Haigh (Looking, Weekend) has always had his finger on the pulse of contemporary LGBTQ+ storytelling and the queer experience, but All of Us Strangers sets a new high bar. The contemplative, dreamy drama follows Adam (Andrew Scott), a gay man who shares a massive apartment complex with one other resident, Harry (Paul Mescal). When Harry and Adam strike up a connection, it spurs Adam’s memories of his late parents — played by Claire Foy and Jamie Bell — as he imagines conversations they never got to have after they died in a car crash when he was only 12.
Scott earned raves for his melancholy performance and his quicksilver ability to transform himself into a child of different ages purely through his acting choices. He made the rounds at all the major awards season events and did heaps of interviews, but he still largely missed out on nominations outside of the Golden Globes and Spirit Awards. Though they received even less awards love, Bell and Foy both turn in remarkable performances as parents out of time and space fumbling through their earnest efforts to love their son. Haigh was also in the adapted screenplay mix for his take on Taichi Yamada’s novel but never quite broke through. And while he isn’t as central or as flashy as Scott, Mescal is also riveting.
Why it wasn’t nominated: To be honest, this one is a real head-scratcher. The film is perhaps a bit more poetic than strictly linear, which simply doesn’t connect with some filmgoers. Not to mention, Scott is widely beloved in the industry and put in the WORK on the awards circuit (we’d like a collage of his snazzy suits this season). But he was also snubbed for his brilliant work in Fleabag by the Television Academy, so go figure.
All of Us Strangers also could've benefitted from a release date that didn't bury it near the end of December — it had a successful festival circuit run, so why not get it in theaters sooner and maintain the momentum?
From a strictly financial perspective, one could argue that Searchlight didn’t invest in All of Us Strangers’ campaign as much as they did for Poor Things, which secured 11 Oscar nominations. Often, smaller studios (or indie branches of bigger studios) don’t have the biggest budgets for FYC campaigns and they have to put their money behind what seems to be connecting most with voters (in this case, it was Poor Things, not All of Us Strangers). Poor Things is arguably a more provocative and wildly stranger film, but it does center on the coming-of-age of a conventionally attractive young woman.
Which brings us to the possibility of a grimmer truth: Despite massive strides in the industry when it comes to LGBTQ+ representation on screen, sometimes the Academy can still seem, well, homophobic. At best, they seem to only get excited about films related to the AIDS crisis (bonus points for straight actors playing AIDS victims. See: Tom Hanks in Philadelphia, Matthew McConaughey in Dallas Buyers Club). Famously, Brokeback Mountain lost out on Best Picture to Crash, still widely considered one of the biggest, most frustrating Oscar upsets of all time. At the time, pundits blamed older voters who didn’t want to vote for a gay love story. Nearly 20 years later, we would hope the Academy would be past that. But maybe the power of queer love still just isn't enough.
Why history will remember it better than the Academy did: Like so much of Haigh’s work, All of Us Strangers is an essential entry in queer cinema. Not only because of the sensual, heartbreaking love story at its center, but also because of the ways it distills the challenges of a particular generation to straddle the line of Gen Z’s openness and acceptance with the more closeted, repressive upbringings they endured. Scott’s Adam is actively trying to find his place, caught between the more unapologetic model of Harry’s sexuality and his loving, if lacking childhood.
Through the lens of sexuality, All of Us Strangers unpacks the primal need to be better understood by our parents, while also acknowledging that sometimes love is the best they have to offer. Grief is a thorny subject for filmmakers, in part because it’s such a unique and personal experience for each of us. No one mourns in exactly the same way (and that’s not even accounting for what society deems the “proper” way to do so). All of Us Strangers is deeply affecting in its melancholy, its intricate study of the furrows and sense memories of grief. The bruise it leaves on viewers’ hearts should linger long after this year’s Oscars.'

Dracula has Risen from the Grave (1968)
Dracula, known for his aversion to holy artifacts, has always carried a subtle air of religion in his stories. But this time, it's as if the filmmakers decided to dip their script into the deep end of a pool filled with holy water. And it's a divine gamble that pays off.
A year after the last film's events, the village is still reeling from the shock of discovering a corpse inside a church bell. It’s a tidbit not witnessed in Dracula’s last story, but cements the idea that he terrorized the village more often than we were led to believe. The altar boy, who discovered the body, is now tragically mute. The priest, once a pillar of faith, is losing his grip on belief, and the villagers are skipping Mass due to the looming shadow Dracula’s castle casts over the sacred grounds.
Meet Monsignor Mueller, a priest on a routine visit to the village who suddenly gets the divine itch to kickstart a faith revolution in the community. With unwavering determination, he ropes in an unnamed priest, and together they embark on a mountain-climbing mission, scaling the treacherous path leading to Dracula's castle. Their audacious goal? To exorcise the place of its dark, demonic history.
However, as they ascend, the priest, perhaps not a fan of leg day, hits a halfway point, both in exhaustion and altitude, and takes a tumble, transforming the mountain into his personal super slide. But here's the catch – he spills his own blood into an icy river. And guess who's taking a refreshing nap there? None other than Dracula himself, still catching some Z's from the last film. The priest's involuntary contribution? It acts like a supernatural espresso shot, giving life to the undead, resurrecting our fanged friend from his eternal slumber.
Shortly thereafter, we're introduced to the formidable Monsignor's family, with the spotlight shining on his vivacious niece, Maria. She's not just turning heads but setting hearts ablaze, especially that of the local barkeep, Paul. They're like a pair of celestial bodies orbiting each other, but there's a cosmic catch. You see, Paul wears his atheism on his sleeve, and that doesn't sit well with the Monsignor, or for that matter, with Maria's no-nonsense mom.
Meanwhile, our vengeful Dracula, nursing a grudge, is hell-bent on making the Monsignor pay for that castle exorcism. And how does he plan to do it? By going for the jugular – quite literally, in fact. He sets his sights on Maria, the apple of the Monsignor's eye, hoping to turn her into his vampiric sidekick. However, it's as if the universe itself is playing on Team Monsignor, because every time Dracula tries to seal the deal on Maria's undead makeover, a relentless string of interruptions keeps thwarting his bloodsucking plans. Maybe it's divine intervention or just Maria's incredible string of good luck, but one thing's for sure – Dracula's path to family revenge is more chaotic than a bat in a belfry.
As we approach the thrilling finale, Dracula and Maria make their treacherous ascent up the mountain to reach his ominous castle. With cunning charm, he manipulates Maria to perform a daredevil act – removing the colossal, ornate crucifix that guards his castle's entrance. She hurls it into the abyss below, where, by some stroke of luck or divine intervention, it lands upright like a warrior ready for battle.
In the nick of time, our hero, Paul, swoops in for a brawl of epic proportions, squaring off against Dracula in a showdown that's more knuckles than niceties. The stakes couldn't be higher, and with a mighty shove, Paul hurls Dracula off the precipice, leaving him impaled on the very crucifix he'd hoped to escape.
Enter the unnamed priest, who, to everyone's shock, was under Dracula's spell all along. With a prayer in Latin that cuts through the night like a sword, Dracula begins to crumble into a mound of crimson dust. Paul, now with his faith rekindled, crosses himself while gazing at the poetic remains of his immortal adversary.
Fascinatingly, the film employs a clever visual trick, using a crimson-colored filter on the edges of the frame whenever Dracula graces the screen. It's a bewitching technique that weaves a scarlet thread of beauty throughout the film, making every moment with the Count a bloody masterpiece.
A glowing 9 out of 10 shiny, giant, golden crucifixes – a rating that shines as brilliantly as the most sacred of relics
