Spring. I take a lot of flower photos, but I went out and took these ones specifically because when I read @into-the-weeds's post about seeing cherry blossoms at the park with Colton, I looked out the window and saw these trees blooming. Right when I read the post. Pretty sure they'd only just started to peek out of their buds the day before.

Look, I mean, Glee started it all. And Grief is already the perfect joke, + the irony of making this for Colton matches the energy of the show that both that gave us the QB & "No, this is her son." How could I not?

I saw that Colton died last week, and almost immediately couldn't process it. Closed the tab and walked away. I didn't think I deserved to be sad about someone who I had never met in real life. But today I looked through @penroseparticle-memorial and was so fucking moved. So here it is:

I met @penroseparticle, like many of us, through Glee. It feels strange to say I met him, when I never met him in person. But I did meet him. I did know him. Just because it happened online doesn't mean it didn't happen. I met him when I was 17. I'm 31 now. I knew him for 14 years. That's almost half my life. Even after Glee ended and we stopped screaming together every week about the Everything that was that show, I always enjoyed seeing him on my dash. He was like a neighbor that I'd nod at sometimes, or enjoy a chuckle as he told me a funny story by the mailbox. Hell, even my fiancé knew him just based on how many of Colton's posts I would show him.

I never got to meet him in person so I don't have any pictures of him. But what I do have is a pictures of the chocolate chip cookies that he and @into-the-weeds politicked their way into getting through my follower give away. Never Forget Cookiegate. For literal years after that, every time I made cookies I thought about you guys and would laugh to myself. You guys waged a campaign that could have overthrown countries for those cookies. I remember you had people voting for you from across the world! You gathered so many people together, all for the sake of cookies and most importantly, in dedication to the bit.

I feel like that really sums you up. Bringing people together with food and laughter. I wish I had sent you more cookies. I wish I could have given them to you in person

Over a third of my life. I did the math and I'd known Colton over a third of my life. Since getting into Glee, not even on Tumblr yet but on Livejournal. Four_tens, a Superdictionary joke, an Inception icon, seeing each other commenting on the same meta posts. Fandom friends living on opposite coasts.

We never met in person and now we never will! That fraction up there is never getting any bigger. It fucking sucks. But knowing each other online was so fucking worth it. Knowing all of you online has been so fucking worth it and I love you.

There's too much for my brain to focus on right now (and so much my brain will grab onto at the slightest reminder) so I looked at /tagged/penroseparticle/chrono on my blog and now you all get Snarky Dune Sand Worm Cat.

Way back in 2012 when I was doing Glee screencaps Colton made a sarcastic comment about the lighting across seasons, that made me laugh and admit I'd never read Dune but knew a little from memes.

So of course I had to go find it, and then edit out "spice" to replace with "snark" and then do happy flailing when Colton said this was going in his repertoire of reaction images.

To quote Sir Terry Pratchett's Reaper Man,

"They believe that no one is finally dead until the ripples they cause in the world die away—until the clock he wound up winds down, until the wine she made has finished its ferment, until the crop they planted is harvested. The span of someone’s life, they say, is only the core of their actual existence."

I'm gonna be reminded of you in thousands of ways and think Don't be a meatball, Colton, and thousands of more things.

A few words about Colton under the cut

We started following each other in the Glee fandom days. That fandom was so messy and I was so glad to find people like Colton who earnestly enjoyed the show. I've been looking back at some of our interactions from that time and I think I might have had a crush on him.

I think he loved the communal aspects of using this website like memes and ask games. He really went in on that kind of thing. It was so nice after all Glee ended and all the mutuals went on to different interests, to have stuff to connect over.

I bought a Keith Haring patch a few weeks ago and I found it in my bag and it made me think of Colton. I'll sew it on a jacket and remember him when I wear it.

saw a post about bugs on my dash and my first thought was to put it in my queue, as bait. and then i remembered.

i've been following colton for probably almost over fifteen years now, ever since glee fandom. i’ve seen his name almost every day for all of those years. in a way he was part of my daily routine. we didn't talk much, mostly because i'm a lurker at heart, but i'd put bug and math posts in my queue as reblog bait for him, or dig through my half-remembered pokemon knowledge to send him asks, and listen to his music recommendations.

right now I still have posts in my queue that I reblogged from him, Before. in my queue he's still here. and when those posts run out i think i'll go to his blog and put some more in. keep his name circulating in the tumblr ecosystem.
