Pet-tecture “Years ago an architect might design a chair as a cool side project. Now that might be a cool cat tree. I think it is quite a 21st century thing and it will only get bigger as it is still hard to find quality design for pets.” - Tom Wainwright, Author ‘Pet-tecture: Design for Pets’. From dog coolers to luxury chicken coops, new ‘Pet-tecture’ book from ‘Phaidon’ explores design for animals. Author Tom Wainwright, who picked the hundreds of items to feature in the book says pet product design is a field that will only get bigger. You read that right. Looking at everything from eco-friendly woven cat houses, to designer bee hives and roof tiles with in-built birdhouses. The book began just focusing on designs for cats and dogs, but expanded to include a wide range of animals as research uncovered the extent of exciting products. As many a pet owner would know part of the challenge with animal products is that they not only have to look good, but a pet must actually want to use them. Cardboard, wood and sisal fibre products were among the most popular materials in the book products in the book, the latter proving particularly popular with cats as it was something they can get their claws into. Each page is half filled with images of the designs and half with text describing the products and their back stories. There is also a key to let people know quickly what animal it is for and what materials it is made of. ‘Pet-tecture: Design for Pets’ by Tom Wainwright, published by ‘Phaidon’. #neonurchin #neonurchinblog #dedicatedtothethingswelove #suzyurchin #ollyurchin #art #music #photography #fashion #film #words #pictures #neon #urchin #dogarchitecture #petarchitecture #design #luxury #ergonomic #environmental #climatechange #pets #tomwainwright #phaidon #pettecture https://www.instagram.com/p/CF1jOxYFVOf/?igshid=190zexwtr54qm

Pet-tecture “I think a lot of the project came with frustrated pet owners who did not find anything that would not fit in to their interior design so decided to create their own,” - Tom Wainwright, Author ‘Pet-tecture: Design for Pets’. Did you know there’s a whole world of design dedicated to pets? From luxury chicken coops to innovative dog baskets ‘Phaidon’ have collected the most playful, quirky and irresistibly cute designs for a new book. Architect-designed homes for pets aren’t new. ‘Zaha Hadid Architects’ created a kennel. Muji art director Kenya Hara created an entire website dedicated to architecture for dogs. Even Frank Lloyd Wright designed a home for hounds. ‘Pet-tecture’ surveys over 200 of contemporary design’s most delightful products, homes, and ideas for animals of all types: dogs, cats, bees, horses, hermit crabs, chickens and more. These designs celebrate the animals for which they’re designed, but they also reflect larger issues impacting the built world. ‘Green & Blue’s’ ‘Bee Block’ and ‘Bee Brick' offer a place for solitary bees affected by climate change. Aki Inomata’s 3D-printed homes for hermit crabs were designed for an exhibition commemorating France returning some of its embassy land to Japanese ownership, and evokes sentiments about migration and colonialism. Hiroshi Nato’s ‘Dog Cooler’ bed features alluminum pipes that can be filled with ice so that animals can lay across them and cool down on hot days and Gitta Gschwendtner’s ‘Animal Wall’ separates an apartment complex from a riverfront pathway while also providing habitat for birds. ‘Pet-tecture: Design for Pets’ by Tom Wainwright, published by ‘Phaidon’. #neonurchin #neonurchinblog #dedicatedtothethingswelove #suzyurchin #ollyurchin #art #music #photography #fashion #film #words #pictures #neon #urchin #dogarchitecture #petarchitecture #design #luxury #ergonomic #environmental #climatechange #pets #tomwainwright #phaidon #pettecture https://www.instagram.com/p/CF1jGXnFMTf/?igshid=njkz9ouxq651

Pet-tecture “Some of those projects are just beautiful. One architect, Hiroshi Naito, design for ‘Architecture for Dogs’ is called the dog cooler. Years ago he had a dog called “Pepe” a big fluffy white Spitz, who would get so hot during summers in Japan. He passed away a few years ago and I thought this was a lovely tribute to him and a thoughtful design.” - Tom Wainwright, Author ‘Pet-tecture: Design for Pets’. Created for the ‘Architecture for Dogs’ initiative organised by architect Kenya Hara (and at ‘Japan House’ London until January 10, 2021) the dog cooler was inspired by “Pepe” who would lie down on a on a cold tile floor to cool himself down in warm weather, according to its designer Hiroshi Naito. ‘Architecture for Dogs’ invited top architects in Japan to design products for dogs, such as shelters and play areas. The blueprints of the designs are available to download to the public so you can get creative at home. Back to the book. This is the perfect tome for design-conscious pet owners and animal lovers alike ‘Pet-tecture’ presents an irresistible assortment of hundreds of houses and objects by the world's leading designers, created with our furred and feathered friends in mind; from cats and dogs to birds, rabbits, horses, fish, mice and guinea pigs. Whether it's playful cat trees, concrete dog homes, luxury chicken coops, 3D-printed fish tanks, or a dog-shaped cat scratcher ‘Pet-tecture’ has the incredible range of design for animals covered. ‘Pet-tecture: Design for Pets’ by Tom Wainwright, published by ‘Phaidon’. #neonurchin #neonurchinblog #dedicatedtothethingswelove #suzyurchin #ollyurchin #art #music #photography #fashion #film #words #pictures #neon #urchin #dogarchitecture #petarchitecture #design #luxury #ergonomic #environmental #climatechange #pets #tomwainwright #phaidon #pettecture https://www.instagram.com/p/CF1jBj-lUB0/?igshid=1r4p18xs7g2q4
