BIRD AKA JANIE PRICE presents: What The Night Knows
It's the "After Dark Remix" by Sleepcub
Tumblr media
About the song:
A remix of Bird's last single "What The Night Knows" made by her long time collaborator "Sleepcub" aka Pete Davis (PJ Harvey, Dido)
Janie Price aka “Bird” is an award winning half English, half Irish singer/songwriter and multi-instrumentalist.
She started her classical training as a cellist aged six, learnt the drums at eleven and started her session career in her teens which saw her singing, playing cello and writing with numerous signed artists.
Subsequently, she became an artist herself releasing her debut album to critical acclaim before signing her second album to EMI publishing and the independent Copenhagen based label Music for Dreams
She was invited to star in a 6 episode t.v.programme for Sky Arts, “Art of Survival” filmed playing her musical compositions across Europe and entered the Swiss Eurovision finals with her cowrite “Secrets and Lies” for Chiara Dubey as well as co-writing and performing on two Number 1 gold certified chart topping Hooverphonic albums.
instagram
She is currently touring film festivals with her first, award winning short, film “Wider Than The Sky” for which she wrote not only the script but also the soundtrack which, of the same name, has also just been released.  She is also working on a new acoustic EP to be recorded in Nashville this Autumn and is mixing material worked on over the past five years with producer Mike Hedges and Grammy award winning artist John Paul White (The Civil Wars) for an eventual album release next year (2025).
She has written with and continues to write and collaborate with many house hold names in the world of music including James Dean Bradfield (Manic Street Preachers) , Andy Dunlop (Travis), Ally McErlaine Texas , Shelly Poole (Alisha's Attic) Hal Lindes (Dire Straits), Tennessee Tears. She is a voting member of PRS, Ivors Academy, World Soundtrack Awards, FAC and the Alliance for Women Film Composers.

Intern report: processing the Pete Dunlop collection
Emporia State University grad student Alyssa Collins finished up her work on the Pete Dunlop Collection last week. We had a great plan for her to dig in to the physical collections during her 4 month practicum with us, but obviously that all changed 8 weeks ago when we all came home. I am delighted that we were able to find meaningful electronic collections for her to work on!
This is also a cool collection because it includes both Dunlop’s research files for the book, but also a crawl of his blog.
Pete Dunlop Collection, 1903-2010
Pete Dunlop wrote the book Portland Beer: Crafting the Road to Beervana and writes the blog Beervana Buzz, which focuses on craft beers in Oregon. He has donated his collection of research papers that he used to help him write his book, which focuses on history and tries to educate the novice on Oregon brewing, whereas his blog is about events, life, and beer. It is interesting to read his book and then read his blog. You can see how times are different and how his opinion has evolved as the industry changed. It is awesome that we got an Internet Archive web-crawl done on his blog because it really captures an opinion of the beer industry. Recently, with Covid-19 his blog has not been as active as they once were. He does express concern over the changes happening to the craft brew industry and how flooded the market is.
As another perspective, I do think it is interesting that the beer industry is changing. We are seeing more variety of drinks, such as seltzers (which Dunlop has a strong opinion about in his blog if you wish to read), and a flooding of different styles of beers. Another concern he has is how craft breweries are going to survive after this is over.
In the past breweries have come and gone. Some have merged with larger corporations and some have sold off and been closed by others. It is a changing environment in Oregon when it comes to beer. Even now, as Covid-19 is shutting down so many businesses Oregon’s craft breweries are striving to be essential by adapting to demand. Some craft breweries are still brewing to attract attention during this time, such as Old Town Brewing creating a new IPA that they can and deliver directly to Portlanders.
Working on this project was interesting because I really got to see how Portland, Oregon has changed over time when it comes to beer. It really made me pay more attention to the craft brewery industry in Oregon, especially in recent events. I am now seeing how the industry is all over Oregon, there are breweries in even small communities on the Oregon coast! It is amazing to see how much variety we have in this state. We are rich with micro brews.
Below is a series of photos of the back-end of things. Right now, due to everything, I am working with digital collections in a shared file on Box. This has added a new spin on things as we try to continue to process collections while staying safe.
Tumblr media
In this photo you see the series broken down into four areas. There are five series total, but since the fifth series is the blog it isn’t included in Box.
Tumblr media
Upon clicking on Series 3 this is how the files are broken down. Since this is a collection of newspaper articles that Dunlop used for his research they are broken down by dates.
Tumblr media
When you open one of the files you get the collection of newspaper articles. I don’t know about those of you reading this but I love old newspapers. There is something that is fascinating with how they advertised and what they focused on at the time. People talk about sensational journalism now but when you read some of the stories in older newspapers you can’t help but giggle over what some of the articles focused on.
Tumblr media
This is an unpublished photo that Dunlop took to show the changes of the Burnside St. near the Weinhard’s Brewery. The top image is from 1956 during the 100th anniversary. The bottom photo was taken by Dunlop in 2013. In just 57 years the street looks different in many ways. It is a testament to how much Portland is changing every year. It is a growing city that changes and adapts with the times, or tries to do its best considering how quickly it has grown. It makes sense that Dunlop would focus his book on the Portland area, with its growing craft breweries and just a changing city landscape. His blog really shows how the city and beer has changed in the short amount of time since his book was published. Pete Dunlop’s papers are now available for you to view and they are very interesting. Also check out his blog!

I love when Fred gets to play characters that are either fathers, become father figures, or a mentor of sorts. And these are just my favorite examples of that.

Hickman and Birchall brothers the pacesetters at TT 2023.
Tumblr media
The evening was warm, almost calm; with clear blue skies and that meant problems with dazzle on the run out to Ballacraine and again on the mountain climb from Gooseneck to Mountain Box (aka East Snaefell Gate). On the drive out to Kirk Michael it was noticeable that most vantage points had a large number of spectators for so early in the event; especially at Ballaugh and the White House, Kirk Michael. The first rider to reach Douglas Road Corner was Dean Harrison on the DAO Kawasaki Superbike; he was closely followed by Michael Dunlop who was aboard his MD Racing Honda Superstock machine. The spectacle is amazing as they blast along the narrow road through the village at 160mph. Davo Johnson was next on his Jackson Racing Honda Superbike, and he is right back on the pace after his enforced absence from last year’s event. After Jamie Coward and James Hillier had flashed past on their Superbikes; Josh Brookes came towards us on his FHO Racing BMW; he was late tipping the bike in and ran very wide; throwing up some dust. Thankfully, he was able to power away through the village. Having had that little scare; the rest of the evening was peaceful for the marshals on duty. Peter Hickman was next; he was fast and bang on line on his FHO BMW. Davy Todd and Conor Cummins were both rapid on their Milenco Padgett Honda Superbikes. The action was excellent for the spectators at Douglas Road Corner; many of whom were from France. Dean Harrison was first to complete the lap; he set the bar at 131.974mph; with Michael Dunlop achieving 131.843mph on the stocker; faster than his Superbike time from yesterday; clearly this machine is set up perfectly. Peter Hickman then took top spot with the first 132mph; his exact speed being 132.079mph. Conor Cummins; never one to push hard in practice; recorded 130.294mph; with Todd not far behind on 129.920mph. Jamie Coward and James Hillier achieved 128.488mph and 128.029mph respectively. Despite his little moment in Kirk Michael, Josh Brookes was second to Michael in the Superstocks at 126.282mph. The lowering sun was proving more problematic; there were yellow flags at Creg ny Baa following Matt Stevenson’s off; we wish him a speedy recovery from his injuries. There were also yellow flags between the bottom of Barregarrow and Westwood due to oil on the track caused by Mark Gooding’s expiring machine. The action was still excellent, and some fast times were set. Dean Harrison at 131.351mph; with Hicky marginally faster at 131.712mph. Michael Dunlop changed to his Hawk Honda Superbike and set a speed of 131.141mph; whilst Davey Todd and Jamie Coward both topped the 129mph mark. Conor Cummins suffered another mechanical; going out at the 33rd. Hickman then set off for a lap on his Superstock machine; but that did not go as planned. He had an off piste trip up the slip road at Braddan Bridge; re-joined the course; but eventually pulled off at Ballacraine. Away from the race favourites some fast speeds were set, Shaun Anderson ended third in the Superstock at 125.841mph and the impressive Mike Browne set 125.745mph; both could break the 130mph barrier come race day. The cleaning of the road due to the oil spill meant that the session for Supersports and Supertwins was cancelled. The food weather should allow that time to be made up later in the week. The sidecars were allowed out later but faced the ever lowering sun and the yellow flags from Barregarrow to Westwood. The Birchall brothers were first to Kirk Michael and took the corner fine style; as did Pete Founds / Jevan Walmsley. Tim Reeves / Mark Wilkes had been caught on the road by Gary Bryan / Phil Hyde. The speed table showed the Birchalls at the top with 116.828mph; with Founds / Walmsley second at 116.110mph. Bryan / Hyde set 110.146mph with Reeves / Wilkes setting 109.623mph on what was their first lap. Only 5 outfits went out for a second lap; the Birchall brothers raised the bar to 118.316mph; whilst Reeves / Wilkes upped their pace to 112.338mph. The Ramsdens joined the 110mph group with 110.236mph. The evening ended with the news that Jake Lowther; passenger to Alan Founds had withdrawn from the meeting; leaving one of the race favourites on the sidelines. Read the full article

DNFs and Trophies! Rough with the Smooth on the Honda CB500-4
Last weekend I had the opportunity to ride an old Honda CB500-4 (1972) thanks to Mr Pete from Guernsey. The bike was originally built for sprints and hill climbs on the Channel Islands but Pete wants to see it compete on short circuits with a view to possibly running it at the Classic TT.
Realistically the weekend with CRMC was a shakeout to see whether the bike was up to being thrashed around at race pace with similar machines. Thankfully I had crew chief Sam and technician Calvin along with me to help out. With limited knowledge of the old bike we were in blind and relying on corporate knowledge within the classic paddock to get us by.
The bike certainly looks the part. After struggling to start it on Friday we fitted a new set of plugs and it fired up. It seemed to run ok for practice and the first qualifying session so we changed nothing apart from gearing. The first race of the weekend was the 500 GP class so a mixture of Hondas, BSA and Matchless machines were on the grid.
Starting from P37 the Honda launched well and seemed to be running ok. I made up quite a few places in the early laps and settled in getting used to the bike. At two thirds race distance, about 6 laps, the bike started to mis-behave a little and felt like it was either running on three cylinders or running out of fuel. The problem was occurring after the long left of Starkeys up to Mcleans and after the right at Coppice onto the Dunlop straight. I rode around it and finished 21st which was actually third in class for myself.
To try and solve the issues we planned on running a higher fuel load and we checked all the electrical systems to make sure everything was good. We also removed the restrictive baffles from the open mega exhausts as there was no noise limit imposed. Saturday morning came and after missing practice I managed to tag onto the back of the Landsdowne race for the green flag lap to check the bike was good. All seemed well so we waited for the next 500 Grand Prix race.
Once again I was 37 on the grid due to an average lap time on the Friday. Again I got a good launch and this time I made up quite a few places in the first couple of corners. Once I realised the bike was running how it should I started to make progress. I was passing riders every lap and my lap times felt considerably quicker than the previous day. I made up 25 places over the course of the nine lap race and finished in a respectable 12th position and another podium in class (2nd) I had gone a full five seconds a lap quicker.
Having changed nothing on the bike I was feeling confident for the afternoon races. That soon changed when I got out to the grid for the ACU 500 race and the bike just wouldn't run on four cylinders. I managed the green flag lap plus one full race lap before deciding to pull in.
We had a few hours to try and sort the issue so proceeded to check plugs, leads and the whole ignition system. Having covered every possible eventuality the only option was to go and try and run the bike in the 500 Grand Prix race. I should have started 14th on the grid but I elected to start from the back again because of my concerns with the bike. That turned out to be the right decision and I struggled to get the bike off the line due to lack of power. I chose to keep going for a few laps to see if the issue cleared. I spent most of the three laps trying to get the bike to fire on the number four cylinder. Old bikes have the advantage that you can pull HT leads on and off whilst going down Craner Curves to try and coax a spark.
I had no joy with clearing the fault and mindful the leaders would be catching I looked back half way down the Dunlop straight to see them exiting Coppice. I chose to pull in and get out of the way. From that point until about 9pm we worked meticulously through trying to find the fault. We even checked the rockers for tightness. In the end we spoke to Clive at Davies Motorsport and he helped us try and find the fault. The conclusion was that it could be mechanical, a tight valve or something similar.
I decided that on the Sunday I would head out to the grid for my last race, do the green flag lap to see if the fault cleared and if not then I'd park it for the weekend. As it was the bike seemed to be running OK as I headed up to the grid but unfortunately another fault developed in the form of a sticky float in the number one carburettor and the fuel leak was too great to risk running the bike.
Overall a successful weekend. We proved the bike wasn't quite ready but when it did run well it was clearly competitive. I look forward to working with Pete the owner to get the bike tweaked and to a state where we know it won't let us down. It's not far off in truth but just needs some fine tuning to be able to run at such a pace for prolonged periods. I've learned a lot in the three days I spent with the bike and in the classic paddock. I'll try and do a lot of the work myself prior to the final engine work being done at a workshop with a dyno to run the bike.
A huge thanks to Pete for letting me ride his precious machine. Thanks to Sam and Calvin who volunteered to help me. They thought they were in for a nice easy weekend, as did I, but it didn't turn out like that. Also thank you to Lee who turned up to see Pete and ended up spannering too.
Finally thanks to True Heroes Racing for allowing me to use the awning and associated kit. This wasn't really a team backed venture but any publicity is good publicity for the team. I chose to get as much exposure as I could in a paddock that True Heroes Racing doesn't normally have a presence in by using the awning and my team leathers. Pete even put our stickers on the front of the bike which I wasn't expecting.

Pearl District #beerhistory walk-about
I am preparing to give a Portland Beer History tour next month for the Society of Applied Anthropologists and gave it a test run / timed walk yesterday. Seemed like a good time to stroll down memory lane.
I started at Powells because I didn’t have Pete Dunlop’s book with me and needed the original Widmer Bros. Brewing address.
Tumblr media
I walked by Deschutes Brewing.
Tumblr media
And was reminded of how things are changing.
Tumblr media
And then down 11th to BridgePort Brewing on 14th.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I had to walk all the way around the block...
Tumblr media
And peek in the loading dock -- where the machines are quiet.
Tumblr media
And of course there’s almost famous door.
Tumblr media
Which I thought was this door.
Tumblr media
Then I wandered by where I thought Widmer Bros. Brewing was...
Tumblr media
And then down 14th to Flanders. Where I found a very small looking 10 Barrel Brewing Co.
Tumblr media
And then around the corner.
Tumblr media
Kidding! The sky is WAY too sunny and that’s when it was in its pre-Portland Brewing chrysalis! Really, this is what it looked like today (as Rogue).
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I also tested out portrait mode on my new phone on this stop sign. And then took a slightly better picture of Von Ebert Brewing Co.
Tumblr media
And this was the delivery truck on the side street?
Tumblr media
I looped past a cookie dough cafe (?!?!?!?) and back to Henry’s Tavern, a good reminder of the Weinhard’s complex that one stood here and now has very different surroundings. The only constant is change, right?
Tumblr media
It took me **3** hours to drive home, but before I went I saw this Title IX art.
Tumblr media
And then this guy in a suit covered in Cannabis leaves. He tossed the arrow around with quite a lot of skill...

So Emmerdale has several real life couples on the show together or who were once on the show.
Mark Jordan (Daz Spencer) and Laura Norton (Kerry Wyatt)
Charley Webb (Debbie Dingle) and Matthew Wolfenden (David Metcalfe)
Jeff Hordley (Cain Dingle) and  Zoe Henry (Rhona Goskirk)
Christopher Chittell (Eric Pollard) and Lesley Dunlop (Brenda Walker)
Dominic Brunt (Paddy Kirk) and Joanne Mitchell (Sandra Flaherty)
And I’m not sure if these two count because I don’t know if they are still together.
But...
Isabel Hodgins (Victoria Barton) and Michael Parr (Ross Barton)
I bring this up because I find it interesting, so many couples working on one show together.
But I also wonder if they think about their partner’s romantic counter part on the show. Not in a jealous kind of way of being upset about them kissing someone else. They’re all professional actors, I doubt that kind of thing fazes them.
Or that they want their characters to get put together, since many of their characters wouldn’t match together like Debbie and David or Cain and Rhona.
But like since they know what’s going on in the show and they know the characters histories. And they must know some spoilers of what is coming for the characters. Who they think has the best onscreen chemistry and who is the best for the character all round as a romantic partner. Do they have any opinions on who they think is the best choice for the others romantic options on the show. Rooting for their partner’s character love life and life in general on the show.
For example would Zoe be more Team Charity or Team Moira or Team Harriet and is Jeff all for Team Pete or is he still rooting for Team Paddy? Does Chris think that Brenda should give Bob another chance? What does Charley think of David sleeping with Leyla while married to Tracy?
I mean as watchers of the show and knowing somewhat of what’s going on. Do they have opinions or do they root for certain pairings or stories? Or is it just another job and they don’t have feelings one way or another?

The Most Important Guitar Effects Pedals for Aspiring Rock Musicians
Tumblr media
You will find a mind boggling quantity of guitar effects pedals around and they are available in many different shapes and dimensions. What's a result pedal you might ask? A result pedal is a system that's set between your guitar and the amplifier to change the output audio. A bicycle consists of numerous components placed to a circumstance. The noises which you could reach from various effect pedals are rather extraordinary.
Guitarists now use more ramifications than ever and are obvious to the sounds of groups like Pink Floyd and U2. A number of effect pedals are used in series to complicate the noise. There are two chief pedals on the market. One is the multi effects processors and these comprise numerous built to one device.
Alternately, individual pedals center on providing you sound and more than two. Such pedals have you playing around with configurations so as to acquire your planned sound. Many amplifiers nowadays have built-in sounds that you use but they're not as flexible as pedals. This is because it's tough to use more than 1 sound concurrently on amps.
Pedals price from $60 or 40 upward and include a wide selection of costs. Professional brands include Boss, Marshall, Pete Cornish, Electro Harmonic, Yahama, Dunlop and Digitech. As a budding guitarist, you may easily wash your bank account blank upon buying guitar effects pedals on account of the countless variety on the market. What I urge is that you simply buy 1 pedal for every principal audio.
Recommended guitar effect pedals
Delay and Reverb sounds provide a powerful echo sound and is great if you're playing live. This seems professional like and is quite convincing. Distortion and earn guitar effects pedals are frequently used with electric guitars and therefore are certainly utilized in solo and lead guitar playing.
This adds meat and crunch into your sound and surely does sound pleasant. As stated before, multi effects processors are a great for novices since they have access to each of the various possibilities right in front of them. All these mentioned are the vital pedals you have to have to be able to seem good.
As soon as you've gotten hold of the principal pedals, you might choose to search for a couple more to seem great! A wah-wah effect makes it possible for the noise pitch to be continuously changed via using a pedal.
This was heavily used by Jimi Hendrix. Additional effects comprise Flanger, Chorus and Phase shifter also understand as a uni-vibe. These pedals seem slightly like one another, nevertheless they do seem amazing. Chorus and Flanger pedals seem very sweet and made famous by David Gilmour and generated the sounds of Pink Floyd. The majority of these seem best with little to no distortion or gain.
