Audiobook Reviewed: Pull to Open -- The Inside Story of How the BBC Created and Launched Doctor Who
Audiobook Reviewed: Pull to Open -- The Inside Story of How the BBC Created and Launched #DoctorWho
Funny thing: the BBC have often been very sniffy about Doctor Who. Something that comes across very strongly in Pull to Open is that this nasal congestion goes way, way back: right back to the programme’s origins. The BBC just didn’t get it. What was the point, they huffed and puffed, of wasting the resources of the mighty corporation on a silly children’s science fiction series, which would…

I want to do something different for the anniversary in late november, like with the story tournament I did last year. I'm thinking biggest influence on doctor who, originally I was thinking just with companions (which I might add to the list anyway) but I think it might be better with real people as a celebration of everyone who got the show where it is today. Obviously it would be a lot of nominations, which I might open up way in advance to give a really long nomination phase, I'm also going to put a starting list below. Idk, any thoughts on this as an idea I guess
Actors
all numbered doctor actors
Carole Ann Ford (i'm not going to start with all companion actors, I'm just going to focus on companions I think had a big influence on the show)
William Russell
Jacqueline Hill
Frazer Hines
Nicholas Courtney
Liz Sladen
John Leeson
Janet Fielding
Sophie Alderd
Billie Piper
Alex Kingston
Nicholas Briggs
Roger Delgado
Writers/Script Editors
David Whitaker
Terry Nation
Terrance Dicks
Robert Holmes
Douglas Adams
Eric Saward
Andrew Cartmel
RTD
Steven Moffat
Chris Chibnall
Kit Pedler and Gerry Davis (Tenth Planet)
Producers
Verity Lambert
Barry Letts
Philip Hinchcliffe
Graham Williams
JNT
Other
Sydney Newman
Delia Derbyshire
Michael Grade (this is a joke this is a joke this is a joke, well sort of, what would doctor who be if it hadn't been cancelled)
Peter Brachacki (production designer for unearthly child and therefor original tardis)
Raymond Cusick (dalek designer)
Waris Hussein (if more directors are nomintaed I'd happily give them a category, but Hussein is the only one I'm putting on the starting list)

Do you like the original TARDIS interior? Then thank this man.
Happy birthday to the late, great Kazimierz Piotr "Peter" Brachacki, the production designer who brought the First Doctor’s TARDIS console room into being.

Now THAT would be an interesting set design!
[Pictured: Barbara and Susan having a staring contest probably. Infotext reads: “Peter Brachacki had originally envisaged the ship’s bedrooms as octagonal in shape, with transparent walls which became opaque when the room was occupied.”]

Doctor Who Christmas Special 2017 Clip - Escaping in the First Doctors TARDIS

Doctor Who Christmas Special 2017 Clip - Escaping in the First Doctors TARDIS
Here is a Doctor Who Christmas Special 2017 Clip where our heroes escape in the first Doctor’s TARDIS.
In the Doctor Who Christmas Special 2017 Clip we get our first look at what the production has done to re-make the first Doctor’s TARDIS interior. The clip just has the wall with the doors and a close-up of the central column. In the pictures released for the Doctor Who Christmas Special 2017 we see a bit more.
Photo blowup wall missing
Despite them going to great lengths with having the TARDIS exterior as it was back in 1966 one thing inside is not as it was. Back then part of the walls was a photo blowup. I met BBC designer Peter Brachacki in 1976. He had designed the TARDIS interior for the first episode. He said he used a photo of the plastic packing for tablets. I seem to think is was a cost thing. However it was used right from the start and believe it continued in use into the Jon Pertwee years.
In the pictures where you might expect the photo blowup wall we have moulded circles in hexagons! Maybe it is a plot point?? Maybe the current designer thought Photo blowup wall looked naff? Maybe he wanted to link it to be current TARDIS interior? They seemed to have gone to a lot of trouble with other things so this is a bit of a puzzle!
The white hexagon circles have been seen before. Behind Tom Baker in the Art Gallery….
First Doctor’s Yellow Hair
One other thing you may note is the pictures show the first Doctors’s hair being a bit yellow. In An Adventure in Space and Time it is white. It’s the same wig but it’s been in storage. Apparently no one noticed until is was too late. Post production has involved them removing the yellow! Whoops!
The story will be aired on Christmas Day. This includes BBC America and BBC One in the UK.

Doctor Who “Twice Upon A Time” Official Lowdown
The magical final chapter of the Twelfth Doctor’s (Peter Capaldi) journey sees the Time Lord team up with his former self, the first ever Doctor (David Bradley – Harry Potter, Game of Thrones) and a returning Bill Potts (Pearl Mackie), for one last adventure.
Two Doctors stranded in an Arctic snowscape, refusing to face regeneration. Enchanted glass people, stealing their victims from frozen time. And a World War One captain destined to die on the battlefield, but taken from the trenches to play his part in the Doctor’s story.
An uplifting new tale about the power of hope in humanity’s darkest hours, “Twice Upon A Time” marks the end of an era. But as the Doctor must face his past to decide his future, his journey is only just beginning…
“Twice Upon A Time” is written by Steven Moffat, directed by Rachel Talalay, and executive produced by Brian Minchin. The 60 minute special guest stars Mark Gatiss as The Captain. Also Nikki Amuka-Bird as the voice of the glass woman. It will see Peter Capaldi’s Doctor regenerate into the Thirteenth Doctor (Jodie Whittaker).

An Adventure in Space and Time
To be novelized as Doctor Who vs. the Cameramen.
Oh man oh man oh many you guys I can't wait for this I want it to air so badly YOU HAVE NO IDEA YOU GUYS I mean, I'm a sucker for origin stories AND behind-the-scenes trivia, so this thing is like a gold mine for me. Plus, Marco Polo playing Donald Baverstock. MARCO POLO PLAYING DONALD BAVERSTOCK. I mean, what more could you want? Okay, I should calm down. For those not in the know, An Adventure in Space and Time is a docudrama (a term which here means "film based on a true story but truer than that usually implies") about the William Hartnell years of Doctor Who, and more specifically about the show's origins. It's been written by Mark Gatiss, who you know for writing "Victory of the Daleks" and "Cold War", so I've got pretty high hopes for this. Other reasons I'm excited:
William Russel and Carole Ann Ford (who played companions Ian Chesterton and Susan Foreman respectively) will both have cameos. (Meanwhile, Jamie Glover will be playing Russel and Claudia Grant will be playing Ford. Here's a recent interview from Ford herself in which she discusses, amongst other things, how weird it is to see someone playing Ford playing Susan.)
Nicholas Briggs, the current voice of the Daleks, will be playing Peter Hawkins, the original voice of the Daleks. Which is just so wonderfully meta.
As mentioned, Mark "Marco Polo" Eden will be playing Donald Baverstock, the man who commissioned the show from Sydney Newman which would eventually become Doctor Who. So that's three classic-series cameos on the actual 50th's none. Step it up, actual 50th.
Here's some pictures from the set of an immaculate recreation of Peter Brachacki's original TARDIS set being shot with immaculate recreations of 1960s BBC cameras OH MY GOD YOU GUYS IT'S ALL SO PERFECT
And here's some pictures of their recreation of the '60s BBC offices and Brian-Cox-as-Sydney-Newman and Jessica-Raine-as-Verity-Lambert chilling together SQUEEEEEEE
And here's Mark Gatiss recreating the famous Daleks on the Westminster Bridge scene from The Dalek Invasion of Earth with authentic Dalek props
IT'S ALL JUST SO PERFECT I CAN'T WAIT I'M GOING TO CRYOGENICALLY FREEZE MYSELF UNTIL THIS THING AIRS BYE NOW

Whostory - Peter Brachacki
Tumblr media
Designer for An Unearthly Child, Peter Brachacki had a huge influence on the show going forward as he designed the original console room, which did not see any truly significant change for all of Classic Who, and TARDIS prop, which of course is still a police box to this day.

Anniversary Tournament
Last year for Doctor Who's anniversary I ran a tournament between Doctor Who stories, and I wanted to so something different again this year. A tournament between real people important to the history of Doctor Who, actors, writers, producers, directors, composers, production designers. Technically it'll be a tournament for the most infuential person to Doctor Who and its development over the years, but really I want it to be a celebration of all of these people, and not just the winner.
To that end, the nomination form, you can also submit nominations normally, ie sending me an ask or replying to this post, however I won't be accepting propaganda through those methods.
I'm thinking I'll close nominations on the 18th of November, that might change but probably not by much

Who is most important to the history of Doctor Who?
With 61 years under its belt, Doctor Who has changed a lot since it began all those years ago. Its continued survival has relied on that change and the countless people who made it happen. Trying to single out any one person as the most important to the history of the show would be near impossible, but hell if we aren't going to try.
bar a few of the most recognisable names, contestants for this tournament were decided by nomination only, so there are inevitably people missing who's contributions were just as valuable, please don't take anyone's absence as a slight against them or their work
the submission form for propaganda is still open

Let’s play ‘I Spy: Who Edition’!
[Picture: One being all grumpy at Ian and Barbara. Infotext reads: “Peter Brachacki filled the control room set with an eclectic collection of items, intending them to suggest the souvenirs of a much-travelled man. See if you can spot them all: an astrolabe; a classical wooden pedestal; a throne from Knossos; an eagle pedestal, an ornate brass clock (now melted, of course!); and a Spanish armchair.”]
