(like how they were staying long-term in 1960s london prior to an unearthly child) or did she think they would finally get to go back home? did she think they would finally be accepted on gallifrey once they had proven themselves to be just as smart and worthy as the other time lords? did she spend every adventure hoping to prove herself, prove that she was worthy of her own home, prove that she deserved to be accepted as one of her own people? did it haunt her, the memories of everyone who shunned them and judged them? did it hurt worse and worse the more they kept running, even though they both knew there was nothing they could do but run?

Ian Chesterton stared at the old man with barely concealed distrust, his voice layered with skepticism. “Are you quite certain, about that, Doctor?”

The Doctor just about managed to keep a straight face. “Of course I am, my dear boy, what a silly question. The ship cannot possibly function properly without it.”

“Only, I can remember the last time that you told us the Tardis had run out of something vital, when we visited Skaro-”

On the other side of the console room, Barbara and Susan watched warily, nervous of an argument flaring up.

But the Doctor stayed calm. “It’s not like that at all, Chetterton, not at all! I’m simply doing the decent thing and informing you of the current situation. You see, the Tardis has almost completely exhausted its supply of updog.”

The Doctor could see Susan gasp and whisper “Grandfather, no-” as Ian opened his mouth to ask his next question.

everyone always acts so aghast about the whole “the doctor kidnapped his first companions!” thing which yeah obviously terrifying from ian and barbara’s pov but you really gotta look at it from the angle of “guy who just ran away from home comes across someone breaking into his car and in a panic locks the doors hits the gas and now they’re all very very lost” and then it becomes hysterical
