So, I’m writing a fic and I was wondering accent of Khuzdul would Fili and Kili have (I know for definite they would speak classical khuzdul). Do you think they would have an accent from The Blue Mountains? Or would it be one from Erebor? I know they would also speak the dialect of khuzdul from the blue mountains from just living there their whole lives.

A thoughtful and wonderfully specific question — just the kind I enjoy most. And one that invites us to peer into both the linguistics and lore of Dwarven life. Let’s dig in.

🧭 Where (and When) Were Fíli and Kíli Born?

Both brothers were born after the fall of Erebor and raised in the Blue Mountains (Ered Luin) — far from the halls of their ancestors.

Fíli was born in T.A. 2859

Kíli followed in T.A. 2864

This places their births nearly 90 years after the refugees of Erebor had fled Smaug’s attack. By then, Ereborian speech patterns were still very much present — but largely maintained by older generations. For young Dwarves like Fíli and Kíli, day-to-day speech would have already been shaped far more by the local Blue Mountains Dwarves, among whom they were raised.

🗣️ What Form of Khuzdul Did They Speak?

They would certainly have been taught Sutumkhuzdul ("Stable Dwarvish") — a.k.a Classical Khuzdul — which remained the prestige variety of the Longbeards, used in formal documents, oaths, and instruction. This was especially likely given their royal lineage as sons of Dís, sister to Thorin Oakenshield.

But just like in our world, a noble education doesn’t override regional influence.

Fíli and Kíli would have spoken Classical Khuzdul with a slight Blue Mountains accent — shaped by their surroundings, their peers, and everyday use.

🏔️ Features of the Blue Mountains Accent (CK-BM)

This refers specifically to the accent of Classical Khuzdul as spoken in the Blue Mountains — not the separate dialect (more on that below).

Key CK-BM accent features include:

Omission of articles in casual speech (influenced by local dialect)

Velar nasal [ŋ] replacing final “n” — e.g. mann (“letter”) = [mɑnəŋ]

Open vowels, such as long “e” being pronounced as [ɛ:] instead of [e:]

So a sentence like "The letter has arrived at my house" (mann nekha zai zaharê) might come out as:

[mɑnəŋ nɛkʰɑ zɑɪ zʌhɑrɛ:] — softened vowels, nasal ending, and omitted article

🧓 What About the Ereborian Accent?

The Ereborian variant of Classical Khuzdul (CK-ERE) had distinct features:

[z] becoming a stressed [s:] in the onset of words

e.g. zanâtdiya (“her hair”) = [s:ɑnɑ:t.dɪjɑ]

Shifting placement of the schwa in consonant clusters

e.g. imnhu (“his name”) = [ɪmnəhʊ] (Ereborian) vs. [ɪmənhʊ] (Standard)

By the time of the Quest of Erebor (T.A. 2941), those speaking this variant were largely elders, and even among them, it may have been fading. Fíli and Kíli, having spent their entire lives in the Blue Mountains, would very likely not have spoken with Ereborian pronunciation natively — though would very likely have been continuously exposed to it through their mother, uncle and other refugees.

As a side note, in The Hobbit, Thorin refers to Fíli as “the youngest,” though Appendix A reveals that Kíli was in fact five years younger. Whether this is a narrative oversight or simply Thorin forgetting in the moment (neither dwarf had reached 85 at the time of the quest), it’s a charming reminder of generational distance.

🏔️ Accent vs. Dialect — Not the Same Thing!

It’s worth pausing here to make an important distinction: Fíli and Kíli would not have spoken the Blue Mountain Dialect (BMK), also known as Khagalkhuzdul.

This dialect is spoken primarily by Firebeards and Broadbeams — the ancient clans native to the Blue Mountains — and it represents the greatest divergence from Classical Khuzdul across all Dwarven speech.

Among its traits:

Complete lack of articles

Distinct verb conjugations in all tenses

e.g. “You walk” is sabsini (CK) vs. ubzûnzu (BMK)

Presence of additional vowels ([ø], [æ]) and unique consonants (“v,” “p,” “zh”)

Use of velar nasal [ŋ] and voiced glottal fricative [ɦ]

Significantly extended vowels in compound words

While Fíli and Kíli would likely have heard this dialect spoken frequently — especially in markets or cross-clan events — it was not their native speech. Their royal education, Longbeard heritage, and cultural context anchored them firmly in Classical Khuzdul, albeit with a slight local accent.

🌍 A Shared Tongue, with Subtle Shifts

While regional accents and minor variations exist across Dwarven clans and holds, it’s important to remember that Khuzdul changes very slowly — far more slowly than the tongues of Men or Elves.

Tolkien himself wrote (HoME X – Of Dwarves and Men):

“The change in Khuzdul… was like the weathering of hard rock compared with the melting of snow.”

Even in the late Third Age, all Dwarves could converse with ease in their ancestral tongue — and often adjusted their speech to suit their audience.

Motivations for shifting speech could include:

Formality or ritual

Quoting from written texts

Cross-clan communication

Clarifying a point

Seeking approval or making an impression

As noble heirs, Fíli and Kíli would no doubt have been trained in this linguistic adaptability — likely slipping into more polished, “neutral” Classical Khuzdul in official or diplomatic contexts, while speaking in a softer, (even BM-accented) register at home.

🧱 In Summary:

Fíli and Kíli were born in the Blue Mountains decades after Erebor’s fall

They very likely would have spoken Classical Khuzdul with a Blue Mountains accent

They did were not native Blue Mountain Dialect speakers, which is a separate linguistic tradition

The Ereborian accent was fading and mainly spoken by elder exiles

All Dwarves still understood one another easily in Khuzdul, and speech could be adjusted as needed

As royal sons of Durin’s line, they would have been taught to speak with precision, pride, and adaptability

📜 An Important Note on Source and Speculation

While much of what we’ve discussed above is grounded in Tolkien’s writings, especially in The War of the Jewels, Of Dwarves and Men, and various Appendices, it’s important to acknowledge that the details on dialects and pronunciation — such as those related to Blue Mountain speech — are extrapolations.

They are based on:

Patterns Tolkien established

Real-world linguistic evolution (especially Semitic languages)

Earlier versions of Neo-Khuzdul that had to be consolidated with more recent updates

Cultural distinctions among the Dwarven clans

Descriptive phonology inferred from Khuzdul roots and root clusters

So while this reconstruction is informed and consistent with Tolkien's world, it remains largely speculative — a scholarly guess, if you will, crafted with care, rather than direct canon.

Why did Sirius Black thought that Remus Luin was the spy??????

We see many versions of how this came about to be from Remus's pov. THat is how he thougth Sirius was the spy, ranging from him being a black to how he shows his tendency to betray at age 16, to the live witnesses who saw him kill peter in cold blooded murder right along with 13 other people then having the audacity to laugh as if this was all fun to him....

From Sirius's side, as to why he thinks Remus is the spy, the only reasoning we often see is that Remus was distant with them during those years, spending time with werewolves.

I have a different theory...

Sirius Black is highly creative and intelligent individual. We all agree on this except some delusional Jegulus and Wolfstar faction of people.

Even after Azkaban, we see him having so much mental faculty that his presence is almost like an insult to people like Dumbledore, Snape and Remus himself who often come about as total stupid what with proof in Harry's yr 1 (not catching on the Quirelmort) and then 2 (not finding the secret about COS) and then 4 (not being able to do anything for Harry having to participate in the tournament and figuring out fake moody thing) and then.... yeah list goes on. They are late to catch on plots. But here is this guy who after years of torture and isolation is able to succesfully avoid dementors and aurors and then with bare minimum food in the cave helps Harry with the emotional care and tournament and almost figures out the whole barty thing in GOTF.

So, he is not a delusional guy. We have proofs of this. (If you are into the theory that he is Moony's little lap dog who is just pretty face and blank head, just step away from my blog.)

So, young adult Sirius Black has to have a really strong reason to believe that Remus is playing them all.

I will agree that peter's whispering into their ears must have played a pretty big role in convincing all three of them decision makers- James, Lily and Sirius that Remus's statements should be taken with a grain of salt.

But they have to have some solid ground to stand on otherwise peter's words have no power behind them...

What i think is that Remus even before Sirius himself has shown a proof to all of them that he isn't trustworthy. When he finds better solution to his issues, he has no trouble in lying, hiding and manipulating.

When teen James and Sirius and peter learn about Remus's furry little problem, they form an executive decision to help this poor little guy.

Remus was not forced, coerced or lied about the other three joining him on his monthlies. He knew that when he turns into a beast, his 'animal' freinds will take him out of a safe place and they all will roam around.

James and Sirius and Rat man had no obligation about it to Dumbledore because this was not about them. This is like an adventure to them. The good guys who fight for the underdogs. They toe the line and see what will happen if they push all the buttons like bullying slytherin kids. Do things they are said not to do. Being rebellious and adventurous is their thing.

But it is Remus whom Dumbledore trusted. It is Remus who made a deal with the old man. Come study at my school, I will have a seprate place arranged for you and i will even go as far as to plant a tree for you in the school grounds, which mind you, is super dangerous but i care about you sooooo mucccchhhhhhhh that i don't want you to have to take the long route. I don't want your delicate sensibilties to get hurt. I will take a further step and scare the shit out of the poor residents and business owners of Hogsmeade Villiage that the shack in which you will spend your monthlies is haunted.

Dumbledore went out of his way to support this guy, the only wolfy guy to study at Hogwarts.

The boy who lived. The wonder boy. Our own Harry himself didn't get this type of royal treatment when Dumbledore went as far as to express his guilt that he is burdened by his decision of leavng Harry at the Dursley's knowing he is condemning a kid to 10 and more years of suffering.

For a kid who suffered all alone because he, unlike kid Remus, didn't even have loving parents to share his pain and suffering with. To be kind and compassionate to him.

Dumbledore cares for Harry in his own twisted ways but we don't see him bending over backwards to make basic things easy for Harry. Instead he lets thing happen to the kid. Again Year - 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 show the proof and then again he is the pig to slaughter etc....

But Remus got a treatment as if Dumblediore owed something to the Lupin's.

Remus breaks this trust again and again and again.

Dumbledore would not have found about his betrayal ever. It got out because of circumstances only.

I know many of you will say that he was just a kid who wanted to feel accepted but - 1.) James and Srius were not forcing him, neither physically nor mentally to let them come. they proposed and he agreed. If it was about them having fun then they could have fun on any day or night. Their transformation is at their will unlike Remus's..

2.) If you absolve him of his little betrayal and attmepted crime of having close calls with village people then YOu have to cut a slack to Sirius also. Becasue he was also a kid at 16 when he did what he did. Having so much teen angst and no adult in his corner when Remus had four- Dumbledore, pomphrey, mummy and daddy. Otherwise you are being hypocrite, plain and simple.

But anyways. Sirius knew that Remus carries the ability to not only fool Dumbledore but to also do something which will directly harm Dumbledore's job as the headmaster for illegally allowing a werewolf in Hogwarts.

Can you imagine the problems Dumbledore would have to face if one of Remus's close call turned into an actual murder???

THat Rmeus was okay to play Dumbledore for a fool by directly disobeying him in search for a little relief and fun with his friends.

So, Sirius has every right to think that VOldemort's shiny offer of better world has the ability to make him change his mind.

His entire personality is about being a werewolf. Thus when it comes to the werewolf business, he will think of nothing and no one. He will just do what he feels is the best for him.

Then why is Sirius asked to appologise and grovel for having the audacity to think Remus as someone capable of betrayal but Remus in stories has always got the upper ground that he has reasons to believe that Sirius is an untrustworthy friend. Why is Remus forgiven with just a simple sorry but Sirius has to be feeling guilty and regretful when his proof is evidently the more clear sign of years of lies and betrayal and manupulation at Remus's hands.

Hats off to you oh great master manipulator Remus Lupin. You not only were succesful in gaslighting people into believing you were the good guy in the books but you took it one stage ahead and make everyone believe that you are a little munchkin outside in the real world too.

p.s. - Sirius's biggest quality is his loyalty. James helped him and loved him so he devoted his entire being to James and his son's life. So, howcome he ever find attraction in a man who at the age of 15 to 33 showed the ability to break the trust of another person who offered him care and support???? Not possible! This is my personal hc that Sirius must have looked down on Remus for his disloyalty.

Now I’m all for the Peter Jackson aesthetic of the hobbits, but we must all agree that the english style clothing is getting boring? I mean these are hobbits we are talking about! I want clothing with lots of colour that reflects their personality and culture! I say we need to start depicting them in Romanian clothing. The coats are made from sheepskin, which is surely abundant in the shire with trade from the dwarves and so forth, and hobbits for sure do embroidery, weaving and leather work. I imagine their designs would be nature based, with vines, leaves blades of grass that are multi coloured like sunsets. 

Every family would create their own family coat and embroider there family crest. Or they would have artisan guild throughout the shire, which I feel would be most prevalent in the north and east farthings. They would also make great trade with these waistcoats, using the extra wool and skins to trade with the dwarves from Ered Luin every summer when they come down to trade.

So yes, what I’m saying is I would love to see more colourful, culture enriched hobbits! I mean look at these waistcoats and tell me that a hobbit wouldn't wear these

To Be Free - The Hobbit - C1

Disclaimer - this world, characters and other stuff doesn’t belong to me. All credit goes to J. R. R. Tolkien, Peter Jackson and whoever else owns the franchise. This is a fem!Bilbo, pre-quest au where hobbits basically take in and care for the dwarves of stevie before they find Ered Luin. Just a side note. I am ignoring Canon, timelines and other things that clog up my creativity flow. Hope you enjoy!

Chapter 1:

Bella was the most peculiar hobbit anyone, so her neighbours said, had ever had the fortune of knowing. She was quite… odd. Unlike the proper, respectable dame that was expected of someone of her Baggins lineage, she was rather more of a, well, Took.

She reminded most who met her of her late mother Belladonna Took, with her wild nature and fiery temper.

She had scared no small number of gentle-hobbits near to death with her habit of simply appearing next to them, seemingly out of thin air. Not that anyone ever said that aloud of course.

Because, no matter how fiery, wild and un-respectable the young lass acted, no-one could ever bring themselves to dislike her. Some, a fleeting minority, made their displeasure known, the Sackville-Bagginses being the most prominent. But for all their talk and fuss, they could never bring themselves to actually do anything about it.

Now, our little adventure starts, well, the way one might expect, with a hobbit, and some dwarves.

Bella was on a trip to Bree, just flitting round the market, sweet smile on her face, when she saw it.

Them.

Slavers.

Her face twisted with horror as she took it in, five dwarrow chained together with iron shackles, looking quite worse for wear, dirty and muddy and, dear Yavanna was that blood?!

Quite understandably, she was furious. So furious, in fact, that she didn’t even hesitate before marching over there, distain and disgust shown clear on her face, and buying them. She felt disgusted, and dirty, bartering for these poor people’s lives but it had to be done.

It took some haggling and negotiation, if one could even call it that, thieving conmen, but she had finally got the slaves. It had almost torn her pride in two when she had had to compliment the disgusting man in front of her, then again when she had to actually speak as if she was going to hurt them, the poor things.

But, that was all in the past now, they had to get to the blacksmiths forge right now to get their ruddy chains removed.

And that’s how Bella Baggins-Took found herself tromping through the markets, five dwarrow chained to her like dogs.

She looked back, and they all looked like kicked puppies. Why are they looking like that? They should be happy they’re fr- oh. They don’t know that. Oh Bella Baggins you fool of a Took.

She stopped, abruptly, and whirled around facing them, scrutinising their expressions. Then she sighed, shook her head and said, “Come on you lot, we’ve got to get to the blacksmiths before nightfall if we’re going to get those chains off you.

She immediately found herself being stared at by five pairs of bewildered eyes. She shrugged. “Come on.” She said again and turned around.

/D… did she just say that she’s going to take the chains off?/ Kiki sounded so hopeful, not yet broken by the months in a cage. There was hope for him yet.

For all of them if the tiny lass was telling the truth.

/She did. She did! She’s going to take the chains off!/

All the dwarrow expressed their shock and gratitude, some felt doubt but that was soon overshadowed by the hope they felt at the mere idea of being free again.

They raced after the tiny lass, all the way to the forge and soon were amazedly rubbing their sore, chain-free necks in bliss.

An hour later and they were out of their stained, soiled rags and into newer, softer, warmer clothes. The refreshing baths they had been treated to had done more than wash away the grime and dirt. They felt like true dwarrow again.

It was more than they had ever hoped for.

But there was only one question that remained, one thing that shrill worried them. What about Dis?

Oooh, cliffhanger. Not to worry, I intend to update this very soon. It’s Easter break so I will be updating all my fics for those people who think I’ve died because I haven’t been posting for so long. Adios chicos!

Hurt (Remus L. x Reader) [PART 1]

Despite their one year of dating, Remus has never even mentioned his condition to [Y/N]. She’s clueless and even the other Marauders are sworn to secrecy. He knows it’s always bothered her that he doesn’t tell her where he goes every full moon and he can’t help but feel a wave of guilt wash over him every time her face falls after he tells her he has to go. The guilt only grows when [Y/N] plasters on a fake smile and tells him to be safe, watching him run off with the other Marauders. Remus knows that hurts her too. The fact that all of their friends know. Yet she doesn’t. Today is the day he decides that he can’t do it to her anymore. He has to end it.

“[Y/N]?” he calls, descending the stairs into the common room. There was chattering voices and many faces around the room, but none of them are who he’s looking for. Yesterday was the first full moon of the month and it absolutely broke his heart when, instead of telling him to be safe, [Y/N] said “I don’t know what’s going on and it’s okay that I don’t, but just know that I worry about you and please come see me when you get back because I kinda hate being ignored for days after you leave.” Which is why he couldn’t keep hurting her anymore. “Remus?” He’s snapped out of his thoughts as [Y/N] walks into the common room, a soft smile on her face. Remus stares at her as she walks toward him. He loves everything about her. Her hair, her eyes, her smile. He’s going to miss it terribly. “How… Uh… How are you?” she says unsurely. Remus feels his heart sink. “I’m fine. Would you mind coming with me for a bit?” Her smile grows and another pang of guilt hits him because he realizes he’s just given her hope. “Of course.”

Remus takes her to the edge of the Black Lake and he can tell [Y/N] is becoming suspicious. The walk was silent and Remus didn’t try to hold her hand like he normally did. He saw her smile fall when he lightly yanked it away from hers. He stands there, looking down and trying to think of what he’s going to say. “Remus, are you okay?” [Y/N] asks quietly, making Remus lift his head and take a deep breath. “I’ve never been one to be straightforward, but I feel there’s no real reason to beat around the bush, so to speak.” [Y/N]’s hands find a place in her pockets as she patiently waits and that alone makes his heart race in fear. Here he is, making her wait for the worst news of both of their lives.

“I’m breaking up with you.”

[Y/N]’s mouth parts and it’s like time freezes because Remus can’t bring himself to say anything else. Instead, he simply stands there, staring at her with fear filled eyes. “W… Why?” she whispers. He takes notice of the tears brimming her eyes and he can’t bear to look at her any longer so he sets his gaze on the trees as if James was going to pop out in stag form to save him. “I just… I don’t… love you like I used to.” It was easier to tell her that than the truth about what he is. He swears he can hear her heart shatter in her chest. Or maybe it’s his own. “W-What did I do?” [Y/N] squeaks out. Remus decides to look at her again, knowing she doesn’t deserve to be ignored. “No! You didn’t-” He stops and takes a breath, feeling himself becoming frantic. “You didn’t do anything.”

[Y/N] scans him up and down with her eyes. “What’s the real reason you’re breaking up with me?” she inquires, tears running freely over her cheeks. “I’ve already told you the reason.” She shakes her head. “Your hands are tapping on your leg and you only do that when you’re lying or omitting part of the truth.” He used to admire how observant she is, but now he resents the trait. “[Y/N], please just trust me this one time.” Something similar to a scoff escapes the female. “This one time? I’ve been trusting you, Remus!” she exclaims, her lips quivering. “You disappear a couple of times a month and I never ask you or the others where you go! You then ignore me for days, saying you don’t want to talk about it and I never question it! I sit in my dorm room and classes, worrying about you! Not knowing if you’re okay or in danger! Everyone but me seems to know what’s going on and it hurts!” Remus feels tears build up in his own eyes because she’s right and he knows it. She’s sacrificed so much for him and he’s done nothing but leave her hanging for half a month with no explanation.

“I’m doing it to protect you!” he yells, but it’s not angry. It’s pleading. Pleading for her to understand why he’s doing this without actually telling her the reason. Pleading for her to accept his action without any justification, something he knows she’s become accustomed to. “Protect me from what, Remus!?” “I’m a we-” He catches himself. His mouth shuts so fast, his teeth begin to hurt. [Y/N] hangs her head, shaking it for a moment. “Even now… After you’ve just broken up with me, you still can’t give me an explanation.” Remus swallows the lump in his throat. “Instead of telling me the truth, you tell me you don’t love me.” She looks up, her [E/C] orbs boring into his and Remus feels as if he’s been stripped naked of all his emotional defenses. “Did you ever?” Her voice is a whisper and the male standing in front of her blinks back tears. “Of course I did. I loved you more than I love myself.” A choked cry escapes [Y/N] and it makes the dam holding Remus’s tears back break, letting a few slip down his cheeks.

“You know what?” she whimpers. “This is for the best.” Remus feels his hands begin to tremble and he clenches them into fists. “I don’t deserve to feel this way anymore.” She stares at him as if she’s looking at him for the last time, her face neutral despite her tears. “Being worried constantly and feeling like I haven’t done enough and that’s why you keep leaving. Feeling neglected and alone because neither you, nor James, or Sirius, or Peter will tell me anything.” She pauses. “I suffered through those feelings because I love you.” The words Remus has left unsaid for a year, but have always felt in his heart now hang in the air and he’s almost tempted to spill everything to her. But a voice inside his mind reminds him that this is indeed for the best. [Y/N] will be safer this way. So he doesn’t respond. He’s said his part, now it’s time for [Y/N] to accept it and move on. “You really have nothing to say?” Remus shakes his head, his gaze drifting to the leaves on the ground. “Fine.” she states. He feels her hand lay on his shoulder and he raises his gaze to meet hers. “Just… Be safe, alright?” Her voice cracks mid sentence and it only makes Remus’s tears fall faster. He nods, knowing if he tries to speak, he’ll choke up.

And just like that, [Y/N] turns around and walks back to the castle. Even when she’s out of his sight, Remus can hear her soft sobs and it only serves as a reminder that he broke the heart of most likely the only girl who will ever love him with all she has. He tries to remind himself that he let her go to protect her, but the hole in his heart doesn’t go away. He stands there, fists clenched and mind reeling with things he could’ve done better during their relationship, anything that would’ve made this decision easier. But what’s done is done and he knows it.

‘That doesn’t make it hurt any less.’

The Elves had chucked you in a cell, taking away what was left of your outerwear after having been captured by Goblins, chased by Orcs and sundry other mishaps. They probably did it to make you feel cold and miserable, but you knew better. Dwarrow were hardier than that, and in these stone cells you’d be miserable, aye, but you’d not be cold. You wondered if Nori was close enough to speak to, worried about him coping with being locked up; something he never did well – even back in Ered Luin, where his jailers were unlikely to beat him for crimes he may or may not have committed. You didn’t think the Elves were prone to physical violence – even with Beorn’s warnings in mind – but Nori’s memories of other jails were bound to come to the fore, even if he wasn’t being attacked inside his cell.

“Nori?” you called, suddenly fearful.

“Yes?!” he replied, sounding closer than you had thought. Forcing your hand through the gap in the bars – uncomfortable but doable – you waved.

“Can you see me?”

“I’m in the next cell,” he chuckled, and suddenly you felt better about the whole situation. If Nori was near you, at least you could distract him from your immediate surroundings. “You are well, amrâlimê?” he asked, his voice low. You didn’t know if you could be overheard by the Company – or the Elves! – but the endearment warmed your heart.

“I am,” you whispered back, leaning against the bars closest to his cell. “Will you be well, though, husband?” you asked, worry creeping into your voice. Nori laughed it off, but you knew him well enough to hear the slight tremor of unease in his voice.

“I have you, don’t I?” he quipped. “Even an Elven prison is bearable if you are with me.”

He sounded confident, but you did not wholly believe him. Instead, you began to plot ways to distract him.

 The first nights, there was no problems, Nori slept soundly, and you did not wake to hear any small sounds that told you he was having a nightmare.

 The days were fine, when Nori was awake – you spent most of your time talking, sometimes to the other Dwarrow, who were further along the block, but most often to each other. You had always had a way with words – you doubted Adad’s highly paid tutors had ever imagined that their training would be put to use in an Elven cell – and you spent hours spinning fantasies in husky whispers towards Nori’s cell. Teasing your husband was always fun – even if the teasing usually led to a kind of fun you couldn’t really have in this place – you missed his touch, his skilled fingers sliding into your body.

“You are an evil, evil, EVIL dam, do you know that?” Nori gasped, listening to your description of riding him in his cell, being his merciless jailor intent on corrupting his innocence – Nori had snorted at that, fairly sure he hadn’t been innocent for longer than he’d known you, but he’d gone along with it – spinning out the scene in his head, the way it might have looked if you’d been playing this game in your own bedroom. At least, you imagined he was doing that, as you were, randomly interrupted by breathy moans you couldn’t hold back as you played with yourself. In the cell beside yours, Nori was probably doing the same, you thought, the fantasies an attempt to exhaust him, make his mind forget where you were.

 The fifth night was not so serene. You woke, groggily, at the sound of Nori’s whimpers. You had both fallen asleep against the metal bars, a lumpy pillow your only comfort.

“Nori!” you hissed, in the tone that usually woke him. You wished you could shake him, but – though you had tried – the cells were constructed in a way that prevented you from even reaching his hand through the bars. He didn’t wake. The cries got louder, attracting the attention of your guards; a young-looking Elf with brown hair came down to look. You wondered how many centuries he had lived, as he looked at Nori with a glimmer of compassion in his hazel eyes. “Please,” you whispered. “Let me go to him.” Looking at the Elf, who seemed torn, you did your best to look non-threatening.

“But…” the guard seemed indecisive for a moment, “you are a lady-dwarf, are you not?” you wondered how he could tell, and why it mattered to him.

“And he is my husband,” you heard yourself hiss, when the guard’s question was followed by a low scream of fear from Nori. The guard seemed torn, searching your hands for some reason. Proof, you thought, reminded of a long-ago lesson about Elves and wedding rings, he is looking for proof. Pulling your marriage braid free of the spire on top of your head where the bead had been hidden for so long, you showed him the small mark that matched the one in Nori’s hair – the mark of his family. Your own mark was carefully concealed in one of his peaks, but this mark could be easily seen in the braid that hung from his chin. “See?” you whispered at the Elf, whose eyes were old and kind with it, unlike the ones you had seen on a forest floor. He nodded once, looking around himself; looking for other guards who had been alerted by the noise Nori was making, trashing in his cell. With another nod, he unlocked the door, letting you out. For a moment, you stood there staring at each other. Then he silently unlocked Nori’s door for you.

“What is your name, dwarf?” he asked, blocking your way into the cell.

“Brynhilda,” you replied and he let you pass. Falling to your knees beside Nori, you shook him gently, humming bits of old lullabies and hugging him to your chest. “Hush, love, hush,” you whispered into his hair, “I am here.” Nori’s screams petered off into whimpers as he jolted awake, burying his face against your middle and gulping in large lungfuls of air. Looking up at the sound of the bars closing once more, you smiled at the guard. “What’s your name, elf?”

“Meludir,” he replied, with a light bow, “at your service.”

“I will remember you, Meludir,” you swore. With a final nod between you, the guard was gone, leaving you to rock Nori gently as his dreams left him.

After the Carrock, they might have continued on in the same manner as always, albeit a bit more peacefully, had Bilbo been a less compassionate creature. Thorin hadn't realized just how tense things were between he and the hobbit until that tension was much diminished. It was not gone completely, of course; friendships did not suddenly appear when enemies reached a truce. It took work, and time.

Usually.

Bilbo did not follow these rules. Which was quite strange, because from what Thorin could tell, Bilbo had always done what was expected of him back in the Shire. But it seemed as though his running off with Thorin and Company had given Bilbo leave to balk at everything predictable and safe, and so sensibly waiting for their friendship to form naturally was just not what Bilbo had in mind.

Though Thorin had apologized that day, he knew (without Balin reminding him, thank you) that a much more formal apology was needed. Dwarrow took their life debts very seriously, and Bilbo's defense of him called for multiple instances of gratitude and repayment. Were this Ered Luin, Thorin might have given Bilbo a high-ranking position, a large house, and three goats and a pony. But since they were in the wild now, and on a quest besides, Thorin was limited to words and actions (which Balin had assured him Bilbo would prefer over even the goats).

So, one day during their idyll time at Beorn's, Thorin sought out the hobbit in the their host's overgrown garden. He found Bilbo in conversation (of sorts) with a very affectionate honey bee. He held out a sunflower for the insect to sit upon, and was remarking (somewhat nervously) on its large and impressive size. Thorin, a bit charmed at the sight, made a soft noise to inform Bilbo of his presence.

"Thorin," said the hobbit with a smile. "Aren't they marvelous?"

He meant the bees. Thorin agreed even though he didn't much like bees, and let Bilbo chatter at him about the various creatures in the garden, as well as the rare and varied flowers that grew in their little haven. He found Bilbo's voice calming, and his shoulders relaxed more and more as he listened. His perpetual headache, too, had miraculously gone away.

"Did you need something, Thorin?" Bilbo asked him after a long winded account of Bilbo's own adventures in growing tomatoes.

"Oh, yes," he remembered, sitting up and preparing to address the hobbit formally. He recited the usual dwarvish words of thanks and promises of indebtedness, with a few more kind words added in on a whim.

Bilbo listened intently, his big dark eyes on Thorin's flushed face. When he was finished, he didn't end on an impressively profound and eloquent note. Instead, his words embarrassingly petered out as he grew more and more distracted by Bilbo's gaze.

"I am...at your service," he finished weakly. "And I...."

"It's alright," Bilbo finally interrupted. "You don't owe me anything, Thorin."

"But I do, I– "

And Bilbo leaned forward and planted a soft kiss on his cheek, and Thorin's mind went blank.

"You're very welcome," said the hobbit. "Very welcome, indeed."

The first time he saw Bilbo's face outside his cell, the relief he felt made him breathless.

"Thorin, Thorin," Bilbo whispered, clutching the bars that kept them separated. "I've found you."

Thorin smiled so wide that his cheeks hurt. "So you have," he said, reaching out to cover Bilbo's hands. "My nephews?"

Bilbo delivered some much needed news of their company, and Thorin's spirits (which had dipped very low in that first week of his imprisonment), rose again to hear that all were accounted for and unharmed.

"I can't see how we'll get out of this wretched mess," Thorin told Bilbo desolately. "Thranduil has no soul, no honor–"

"You leave that to me," said Bilbo, shaking his head at Thorin's pessimism. "Come closer."

Still somewhat downtrodden, Thorin obeyed without thinking, and Bilbo pressed up to the bars and kissed him on the cheek.

"Don't fret so," he murmured. "Trust me."

"He has a fever," Oin said, looking at Thorin suspiciously. "He shouldn't be exerting himself."

Thorin held onto Bilbo a bit tighter. The hobbit's arm was wrapped around Thorin's neck, and Thorin helpfully bore most of his weight. Every once and a while Bilbo would mumble something incoherent and nonsensical, and sway from side to side. Bilbo's fever had risen dangerously during dinner, and Oin had eventually commanded that they put their hobbit to bed. Thorin had volunteered first, of course.

"He won't have to lift a finger," he promised.

Oin raised an eyebrow. "I think you can go without for one night, Thorin."

"Without what?" Thorin asked. Bilbo looked as though he were going to pass out entirely, so he leaned down and wrapped an arm under Bilbo's knees and lifted him into a bridal carry. "I'm taking him to bed."

Oin looked at Thorin as though he were disgustingly dense but ultimately not worth the aggravation and waved them up the stairs. The Master of Laketown had been generous with their rooms, though they still had to share, and Bilbo was supposed to bunk with Fili and Kili that night. Thorin made an executive decision, right then and there, to room with Bilbo alone just in case the hobbit needed his help.

He made it to the bed and turned the covers over one handed, murmuring to Bilbo that he was alright, and that Thorin had him. Bilbo groaned a bit when he was deposited onto the bed, but let go of Thorin's neck readily enough.

"Thorin?"

"Yes, I'm here. Sleep now."

"No, no, wait." Bilbo's hand waved lazily in the air, and Thorin caught it, holding it gently as he leaned forward to listen.

But Bilbo didn't say anything, instead he arched up and kissed Thorin on the mouth. It was sweet, and warm, and Thorin was startled but surprisingly pleased. "S'Thorin," mumbled Bilbo when he plopped back down into his pillows. "Stay?"

Thorin sat on the edge of the bed. He did not relinquish the hobbit's hand. "Never fear," he said, quietly. "I will stay with you."

"Don't leave me. Don't you–"

Bilbo was kissing him. His cheeks, his forehead, his eyelids, his hands–

"You said you'd stay. You're supposed to stay. You're supposed to live."

Tears on his face. Tears on his lips.

"The eagles are coming. Did you hear me? Stay with me, Thorin."

A soft brush of lips on his. Chapped. Quivering.

"I love you, I love you."

His vision was fading.

"Don't go."
