"I Believe in Unicorns" is a coming-of-age film directed by Leah Meyerhoff, starring Natalia Dyer as Davina and Peter Vack as Sterling. The movie follows 16-year-old Davina, whose life revolves around fairy tales, unicorns, and caring for her wheelchair-bound mother. However, everything changes when she meets an older punk skater boy named Sterling. Their budding romance takes a dark turn as Sterling, once Davina's Prince Charming, reveals a more aggressive and volatile side.
The film explores the journey from childhood to adulthood. Prior to meeting Sterling, Davina clung to her innocence, embodying a childlike persona due to her role as her mother's caregiver. Sterling manipulates Davina's naivety, stripping away her innocence and forcing her to confront the complexities of growing up. She grapples with the transition from girlhood to womanhood, realizing that she can no longer hold onto her childhood fantasies.
I would give this film a rating of 10/10. The cinematography beautifully captures Davina's fragility, immersing the audience in her emotional journey. The portrayal of Sterling's transformation from Davina's protector to a menacing figure adds depth to the narrative, highlighting the dark realities of young love and the loss of innocence.
