MIPoPS SOCIAL DISTANCING VIDEO FESTIVAL!
Can't go out to the movies tonight? NO PROBLEM! MIPoPS was inspired by the Appalachian Media Institute to create a mini SOCIAL DISTANCING video festival! Please join us each evening at 6 pm (PST), here and on our Facebook, while we share some video material that'll transport you out of your house and out of your head. These pieces will make you laugh, they'll make you cry, and they might even make you forget the wild and crazy times we're experiencing.
"The first selection for our impromptu Video Festival is a piece from one of our Moving History screenings. Peter Minshall is a legendary Trinidadian costume designer. He has been designing incredible costumes and choreographies for Carnival celebrations for over thirty years. In August 1985, he held The Adoration of Hiroshima in Washington, D.C. This was a carnival-style, anti-war, street theatre which was performed on the fortieth anniversary of the bombing of Hiroshima. The video footage comes from a tape in the Karen Morell Film, Audio and Videotape Collection at the University of Washington. Unfortunately, the material was silent, so we have included audio from a 1989 interview with Minshall.
I chose this video because I feel like it represents an element of the fear that so many of us are dealing with right now. Being isolated at home, in order to protect our own safety and the safety of others, we are forced to consider our mortality in a more present way than we may usually. It's scary. It's wild. It's unpredictable. We can't look away and we also can't keep looking. Also, music helps. Enjoy!" - Ari, Assistant AV Archivist @ MIPoPS

Noel Norton photographed at his Westmall studio. Yesterday I offered a perspective on the work of two good friends at the launch of Minshall by Norton, a book celebrating the art of Peter Minshall as captured by Noel Norton. This is an excerpt. You can read the whole statement at Trinigoodmedia.com (Link in bio) "What Noel and Mary Norton did across more than five decades was to set an unsurpassed example of commitment to the documentation of culture in Trinidad and Tobago generally and to Carnival specifically. But they did one more critical thing. The Nortons showed photographers what self-respect looks like through their industrious and methodical preservation and curation of their work. This was not a common approach to photography in this country. The concept of a coherent, organised oeuvre of work examining a single subject and created with a singular vision is not commonplace here. To be sure, the notion of preserving anything at all seems to continuously elude us. And if film was fragile, modern photography is even more tenuous. Most bodies of modern work are one electromagnetic glitch from being reduced to digital gibberish." #archive #lyndersaydigital #trinidad #photographer #carnival #history #minshall #peterminshall #trinidadandtobago #documentation #filmphotography #photography #thenortoncollection #thelyndersayarchive (at The Falls at Westmall) https://www.instagram.com/p/B5yZTNYpjLa/?igshid=1eib7ibjgqrcw

The costume was designed to allow its wearer total mobility and was an immediate sensation. It also became a major icon of #TrinidadCarnival." (at Trinidad Carnival)

Peter Minshall among wireframe horse’s heads at the Callalloo company mas camp in Cocorite in 1995. Donkey Derby was the band that Minshall salvaged from the much more expansive designs and construction work he’d embarked on for a design collaboration with the Spanish designer Miralda called The Honeymoon. With the collapse of that project and the pervasive presence of Whoa Donkey! a surprise Carnival hit by the United Sisters, who counted among their number Singing Sandra and Tigress, Minshall went with the flow and created his own sardonic look at T&T society, building a massive papier Machel Trojan Donkey to form the centrepiece of his Savannah presentation. But that was weeks away and I needed an early photo of the masman for the Carnival Souvenir I was working on for the Trinidad Express. I showed up by arrangement one evening, scouted a spot among a collection of wire-frame donkey heads in varying stages of completion and lit the designer so that the background, a messy collection of debris and rehearsing dancers dropped off to black. He looked up quizzically and I said three words to him, “Alas, poor Yorick.” He got it immediately. Peter Minshall may have created other famous Kings of Carnival, he may even have created better Kings of Carnival (I’m looking at you Merry Monarch), but he never created a more singularly influential and watershed design than he did with Mancrab. In 1983, Minshall created Mancrab as King and villain of The River, an ascetically all-white band that he proceeded to drench with electric dyes on the stage. There was before Mancrab and there was after Mancrab. It wasn’t the start of a trilogy when it appeared, but it was a remarkable story, rich with allegory and visual impact, the conflict between technology and a simpler country life distilled into the mechanical attack of the obsidian carapace worn by Peter Samuel and the earthy, ethereal beauty of The Washerwoman, worn by Minshall’s sister, Sherry-Ann Guy. It was ecological disaster as pantomime, that first terrifying squirt of red into the floating white canopy above the costume’s head a morbid warning about tainting the natural with the manmade. The engineering for the remarkable costume was conversationally attributed to Ellis Chow Lin On, the recording engineer behind KH Records who also participated in the formation of Charlie’s Roots. #theartofmas #masmanminshall #peterminshall ... Happy Birthday #minshall80 Repost @nationalarchivestt Today, the National Archives of Trinidad and Tobago would like to extend birthday greetings to masman Peter Minshall on his 80th Birthday! Peter Minshall was born in 1941 in Georgetown, Guyana before his family migrated to Trinidad and Tobago in the late-1940s. Growing up in Port of Spain, he was exposed to Carnival from a young age. He attended Queen's Royal College before leaving to study Theatre Design at the Central School of Art and Design in London. After graduating, he worked in the fields of costume design and mas. He became part of the multi-ethnic West Indian Theatre, as well as Notting Hill Carnival, where he was one of the first persons to design costumes. When he returned to Trinidad and Tobago in 1974, he brought these experiences with him to create the “From The Land of the Hummingbird” costume for his sister Sherry-Ann Guy (Coelho). This costume showcased one of his earliest innovations: the articulated bird wing. In 1976, he designed his first full Carnival band “Paradise Lost” which won that year’s Band of the Year title. In 1978, he produced “Zodiac”, followed by 1979’s “Carnival of the Sea,” which won Band of the Year in all categories. His monochromatic “Danse Macabre” (1980) and “Tan Tan and Saga Boy” (1980) showcased his creativity in movement, with the two towering, 15-foot dancing mobiles of Tan Tan and Saga Boy being moved by just two individual performers. Minshall’s appreciation of mas as a form of creative expression led to his Carnival creations and trademark dancing mobiles garnering international acclaim. He was invited to design and direct segments of the Summer Olympics in Spain in 1992 and in Atlanta, Georgia in 1996, followed by the Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City in 2002. He has also presented his artwork at numerous international art exhibitions throughout Europe and the United Kingdom. In 1982, Minshall was awarded a Guggenheim Fellowship, the Trinity Cross in 1996 for Art and Culture, and Trinidad and Tobago’s first Emmy Award for his segment in the Opening Ceremony of the 2002 Olympic Winter Games.
