Magic The Gathering x Final Fantasy - Spoiler Season Part 22 (15/05/2025)

From my quick counting, I have about 10 more posts (including this one!) to make to catch up to the current spoilers, which is everything as of 25th of May 2025. While I'm definitely not able to make 10 posts in one day, I will be trying to pump a few more posts out! Let's just head in with Auron's Inspiration!

3 mana for a instant speed combat trick. All attacking creatures get +2/+0 until end of turn. You can also cast it for the flashback cost when it is in your graveyard, which is just one more mana. This is pretty neat and can even be a politics piece in commander, since you can basically just say "oh yeah, someone is dying" and cast this on an opponent's turn. Otherwise, this could be a finisher for your games. Not bad, not fantastic. Just solid!

Now for the art. Credit to Fang Xinyu. Link to their ArtStation. This looks like it was promotional artwork from FF10, holy crap. This is awesome looking and genuinely could've had me fooled as official promotional artwork. Great job!

Next up, Relm's Sketching!

Flavorful and potentially pretty strong. The only thing is that your copy can and will be destroyed by any “destroy token” effect, though I don't think that exists. However, using it for a land as a sort of ramp effect is very solid! Also a flavor win. While I’d say Relm is more Red or Gruul (Red/Green), the effect of copying things makes sense for Blue or Izzet (Blue/Red).

Now for the art. Credit to Smirtouille. Link to his BlueSky. That sure is Relm using her paint to send a giant t-rex after you. Fantastic art, honestly, love how bright it is and how the paint effects on Relm's brush looks. Also, some more t-rexes in the back! :D

Let's talk about Poison the Waters next!

2 mana sorcery for a modal spell. You choose one of the following effects:

All creatures get -1/-1 until end of turn, mostly good against token based decks that run a bunch of X/1 tokens. Just keep in mind that your creatures aren't safe from this effect either.

Target player reveals their hand. You choose an artifact or creature card from it. That player discards their card. Theoretically you can target yourself with this, but you'd have to reveal your hand to the table. Could still be worth it if you need to get something in your graveyard. Otherwise, this is definitely a "screw you in particular" type effect.

Solid, but ultimately a bit situational. Both modes aren't necessarily all star winners, but can be good in the right circumstances. Mainly, because it is a symmetrical effect, the -1/-1 is very hard to utilize aside from blowing things up that are at 1 toughness, either through already having taken damage or through just being that as a baseline.

Now for the art. Credit goes to Arif Wijaya. Link to his ArtStation. I'm just copy pasting my opinion about this art, since it still holds true from when I talked about the art they showed during the very first trailer: This goes way too hard. This might be one of my favorite arts in the whole set. It is so playful and colorful and it depicts Kefka perfectly, while also showing that the poison isn’t just regular stuff but actively magical. If I had a criticism, it would be found dead in the streets because of the sheer fact that this art is so freaking good. Genuinely, no notes and I’m not a huge Kefka fan to begin with, so my bias isn’t playing up here.

Next up, Phantom Train!

Black for a ghost train makes perfect sense, yeah.

4 mana for a 4/4 is pretty good, though no crewing since... you do it in a different way. Trample also solid. Its ability is you can sacrifice another artifact or creature to put a +1/+1 counter on this Vehicle and it becomes a Spirit artifact creature in addition to its other types until end of turn. So a sacrifice outlet to keep putting +1/+1 counters on it and a way to crew it. Pretty cool. Mainly will see play in decks that are quite resilient and keep putting out creatures... or decks that just need a sacrifice outlet.

Now for the art. Credit to Gal Or. Link to their website. That sure is the Phantom Train and Sabin, Cyan and Shadow running away from it. Sure would be a shame if Sabin turned around and just suplexed the thing into oblivion. Good art, love the atmosphere of it and the ghosts beside the train!

Speaking of suplexing trains, let's move on to Suplex!

It’s Sabin on his way to suplex the Phantom Train! I’m so glad that this is just the canon way to show how cool Suplex is. Anyway, very good card. The only "bad” part about it is that it is a Sorcery and not an Instant, but that would’ve made it literally better than Abrade. This exiling what it destroys is a pretty big boon to have against reanimator or graveyard shenanigans decks. Very very good, you will probably run this in any Red/X deck for removal.

Now for the art. Credit to Fang Xinyu. Link to their ArtStation. This is incredibly red. Why is it so red? It isn't like that in the original game, that would be closer to how Phantom Train, the card above it, has its art. However, this is still cool art. Sabin absolutely sprinting towards the Phantom Train, hands out and ready to pick it up and slam it back down. Still... why is it this red???

Now we come to a different card game... sort of. Triple Triad time baby!

6 mana enchantment. 3 red pips as well, so this is hard to run in decks that are running more than 2 colors. Anyway, the ability is that at the beginning of your upkeep, each player exiles the top card of their library. Until end of turn, you may play the card you own exiled this way and each other card exiled this way with lesser mana value than it without paying their mana costs. So this is kind of a wild card. You would want pretty high mana costed things for this to consistenly(-ish) get a couple of cards you can play and cast without paying mana. However, this immediately falters when you exile a land card, as those are mana value 0 and you aren't able to grab other lands either, since it is just lesser mana value than the card you exiled.

That said, this might see some play in chaos decks in commander. You aren't casting this in 60 card formats, you just aren't. For commander, chaos decks are the main thing I can see this be good for or if you are really confident in running an absurdly high mana curved deck.

Now for the art. Credit to Ben Wootten. Link to his Cara. I love how the cards aren't super neatly arranged, just like if you're playing a card game in real life. But yeah, aside from that, not super much to say, it is Squall playing Triple Triad. I do also like how you can vaguely see what the cards are.

As for the alternative art:

Credit to KAORU HAGIYA. Link to their pixiv. This is definitely a lot more abstract. It's not bad, but certainly not as straight forward as compared to the other art. Still, pretty cool.

Last card of the post: Capital City!

Filter land with cycling for 2 mana. Pretty solid for mana fixing, but otherwise not super interesting. If you are playing 3+ color decks, you might run something like this (or this exactly) to get some more color fixing, but otherwise meh.

Now for the art. Credit to Wei Guan. Link to their Instagram. That sure is Crystalline Dominion and the Mothercrystal there, Drake's Tail. Looks cool and I love the colors used, the later afternoon contrasts pretty beautifully to the blue of the crystals.

Oh.. un hi Uncle Ed?

Riddler was checking his watch, waiting for his henchmen to come bringing two Wayne they said they found on time in the Distraction at the Museum.

20 minutes before show time.

He walked towards the first tied up wayne as keeping two apart in separate rooms was a brilliant idea. Only this wayne was oddly wearing casual clothes that seemed more mid western state that made his eyes narrow in silent calculations. Grabbing the brown bag covering the Wayne head and pulling it off.

A very familiar yet annoying face with a splatter of face paint of planets and stars. Blue eyes who recognized him not in fear but a quiet joy that made Riddler's face go flat with tired sighed.

"Danny, what are you doing in Gotham, and please don't tell me your parents are in gotham?" Riddler asked, pinching his fingers between his nose.

"Oh..umm.. hi Uncle Ed? Ah no. My parents are spending a trip in the Bahamas cruise with vlad? I'm just.. Freelancing while Jazz in Collage over here?" Danny said with a nervous smile his eyes flick a bit to the right as he trying to keep a strong gaze at his uncle who face palmed his hand.

"You snuck over here when you're supposed to be with Alicia for the summer. Did we not have a whole PowerPoint discussion with your parents about you staying away from Gotham City even if im no longer on probation to not teach you?" Riddler groaned as he untied his nephew, mumbling about getting his stuff back from his henchmen later.

"You know, Aunt Alicia doesn't like me much, and Jazz talked about this crazy clown trying and failing to off her due to Fright Knight, and I'm not getting out of this even if I pay you?" Danny, stop trying the excuses at point blank as he follows his uncle slowly our his secret hideout.

"Maybe, but your parents are still going to find out, then I'll be to blame for not telling them about you staying over here with me, and you know how your mom get about me."

"Is she still salty about that incident with bumbl-

"Yes, she still is ab- watch out for block step 3 by 9-, and I swear she has a bazooka carved with my name on it for the day I visit your house." Riddler sighed, disabling the traps he had set out earlier as easily as breathing while Danny avoided the white and black checker floor block before he stepped on it weight sensor pressure.

"..."

"I'm still sorry, and thank you for taking the blame that day, Uncle Ed." Danny whispers softly.

Down in the streets of Gotham, in the side alley next to Express Urgent Care run by one Leslie Thompkins and that was funded by the Martha Wayne Foundation was a soup kitchen.

Well...a soup kitchen of sorts. Not in any way official but if you were hungry in Crime alley you knew that the food would be safe and warm...and it was a place where *you* could be safe and warm.

Danny had left a week after his parents found out that he was Phantom, a week after he had seen their grief, the regret and pain in their eyes. The week had been spent in suspense, he knew that they needed to talk about what had happened but neither of his parents were ever able to even start bringing it up before they were sobbing.

Danny knew his parents loved him, thst his father felt soul crushing guilt, that his mother spent hours staring at herself in the mirror, as if she didn't even know who was looking back at her.

And to spare them both, Danny left.

It wasn't hard to do, not when he could turn invisible and phase through walls, a final text to Sam and Tucker to say his good byes (he knew that they would break and tell his parents where he would be going) and a particularly hard hug to leave from Jazz, Danny flew off with only a back pack.

He had traveled across the US for a few months, occasionally snagging a post card from a super store to send off home, paying only when he had the excess funds (Sam's rants about mega rich corporate billionaires let him know just which stores wouldn't miss the few bucks the cards sold for)

He had met up with Dani a few times, when she was in the country, handing him Vlads credit card and telling him to keep it (though he never did) only ever using it to book a room for a few nights at a hotel to clean himself up and sleep in a real bed.

He settled in Gotham after a while, he had briefly stayed in Faucett but that place didn't have nearly enough ecto for him to live comfortably.

Gotham on the other hand? It had everything, cops that don't question why a teen is on the streets, natural ecto up the wazoo and well...a crime rate that would dissuade his parents ever looking for him there.

He had set up a more permanent shelter in an abandoned apartment building (after chasing out the low level drug dealers that were using it) and found that he kinda liked the vibes of the place under the blatant crimes being committed in broad day light.

Sure people could see you getting mugged and look the other way, but if you were still alive and there 5 minutes later, they would come back, hand you something to clean up your now bloody nose and point out the bodega that had the best sandwiches.

It was a sense of community that Danny didn't know he had missed for the many months he traveled.

His first "cook out" wasn't even supposed to be a cook out, his apartment building was mostly wood and he didn't trust himself to not burn it down, so he came outside, setting up a portable stove and setting up a pot filled with some, water to boil up a soup mix.

As he waited for it to come to temp, he saw the group of homeless rubbing their hands together, watching him with curiosity, though that quickly turned to hunger as the smell of the soup spilled out into the alley.

Instead of turning the others away Danny only shrugged, pulled out his spare paper bowls and handed them out, taking a few bites first to show that it was safe to eat.

What followed was a sort of tradition, Danny would come out a few times a day, take out his hot plate and pot and set up a soup, others started asking if they could pitch in, and well...Danny would have loved to keep providing it freely but his food was quickly dwindling.

So his soup got add in, some jerky that Crazy Tom had got tossed in, a few herbs (re:weeds) were added in by Miss O'Connor, and Danny didn't even know where Lady Dimond pulled out some spices from, but he wasn't about to question the her, he had learned never to question where the working girls hid their things.

And it sort of grew from there, who ever was around came by, some came out of their way to share a meal, but it became a meeting place of sorts "Come by the Kitchen at noon, Tom got his hands on some steak! And it ain't even smells bad!"

Sure gangs tried to pull up on the meeting place, tried to intimidate the people there or coerce them into doing something...well that was until the host, some punk teen with hair darker than black and blue eyes that were so light they were white came up, and dished out a heavy handed fist into their jaws and sent them packing.

And so the Kitchen became a safe space, if you were hungry, if you were in danger, come by the little alley way, right next to the Express Urgent Care, the Host will take care of you there, if your willing to share, to stay peaceful with the rest of the gathered people, then you were welcome to grab a bite and relax, because the Kitchen was always safe.

It would be a few years since the Kitchen started, since people had brought chairs and tables, since an old grill of questionable origin was left out side it, since tarps with only a few holes were hung up to keep the place dry when it rained, since rugs covered the ground and the the alley it was in was swept clean of any needles or cigarette butts.

But for one boy it had only been a few short days since his Mama died, since he had found her cold and dead in the bathroom, a belt tied around her arm and a needle still in her hand.

Jason was miserable, he had stayed with her for the a single day before he knew he would have to leave, the body of his mother would start to decompose soon, so he did what he had too, calling the police with his mother's phone that didn't have a lot of minutes left on it, telling them the address before hanging up and leaving it there so he couldn't be tracked.

He couldn't be there when the cops showed up, foster care would do shit for him, and at least his Mama would be buried, and not left to rot in their bath tub.

So a young Jason Todd, scared, alone and hungry came to the Kitchen, as his mother had told him to many times before, had told him to seek out it's Host if anything ever happened to her...and well...at the very least he would get something to eat...

I love the Danny Phantom fandom's medical gore, but why not torture our DC blorbos too?

Lots of fics make Jason an underdeveloped halfa. Lots of fics make Danny basically unkillable because he's a halfa.

I'm going Maximum Angst Route on this one.

The Justice League buys the GIW's rhetoric. They hear about these dangerous energy imprints, these volatile mimicries of life that are hurting people. The GIW claim they've controlled it in the rest of America, but this one small town has a strong one that protects the rest and helps them attack. They ask for help stopping this one, assure them that once Phantom is neutralised, it'll be easy to deal with the rest. The JL agrees. The JL captures Phantom and hands him over to the GIW.

It takes months to capture most of the other ghosts, as they slowly trickle through the portal to find each other. The JL gains an appreciation for the GIW, having previously fought off entities like Skulker and Plasmius without hero help. They trust the GIW, and so when they ask to scan the heroes for any lingering radiation, they agree.

They're alarmed to find many heroes are mildly irradiated. The GIW removes the lingering ectoplasm from most of them, and they're drained afterwards, but they recover. Damian, who had much higher levels than most, seems almost sedated from his usual fury and violence. Cass privately notes that she can't read people as well anymore, and Damian's lethargy looks uncomfortable for him. She gets suspicious, but when no one listens to her concerns, she leaves for Hong Kong again. She's scared that if her levels get higher and they drain her again, she'll lose the ability to read people entirely. She doesn't want to lose such a fundamental part of how she interacts with the world.

When scanning, however, Batman gets pulled aside. They explain they've found a parasitic ghost in Red Hood, and removing it will be a much longer process. They show the ectoplasm levels, the scans with a visible core. Bruce connects this to the Pit Rage, and agrees to let them take Hood, hoping he will finally get his son back. Jason is cautious, but eventually agrees. This could be the cure he never thought he'd get.

The GIW is estatic. They've discovered a new halfa, and if they do this right, they'll be able to study halfa development. They have Phantom to tear apart to see what an actualised halfa looks like, but watching Hood grow and form? Trying to influence his development, maybe even weaponise him? This is an opportunity they have to make the most of. All they have to do is claim the parasite killed Hood before they could remove it, and they can keep him forever.

The second Jason is alone with the GIW, they sedate him. He wakes up in a cage too small to stand in, right next to the very Phantom he helped capture. The kid is asleep, curled on the floor, bleeding through loose stitches on an autopsy wound. He immediately realises they fucked up, and his rage/guilt/panic attack wakes Phantom up. He expected the kid to be angry, upset, even gleeful that Jason was caught too. He didn't expect the kid to look at him with sad pity, to calm him down and say he's sorry that Jason was mislead and betrayed like this. That yeah, shit's gonna suck now, but Danny (as he insisted) would be there for him for as long as their cages were kept together. That unlike Danny these past few months, Jason wouldn't be dealing with it alone.

The scientists slowly feed Jason ectoplasm, and cut him open daily to monitor how it affects him. Ironically, his Pit Rage is cured, but that doesn't make it any better. If anything, it's worse, because now he's fully cognizant and has no extra energy to fight with. He still does fight at first, even without the Pit, but he knows no one's coming to his rescue. Eventually, he joins Danny in his nihilistic snark and dead-eyed stare. And yeah, they joked about that pun.

Time becomes meaningless. They do whatever they can to escape the hopelessness. Horrifyingly morbid jokes, empty bets on what form of torture they'll endure next, whispered stories about the people they miss. They reach through electrified bars just to feel a hand that doesn't mean harm. They spill their guts, metaphorically and literally, exchanging their deepest fears and secrets until they know each other entirely. Their necessary codependency becomes actual love, because how can you go through this together and know each other so deeply and not love each other? Platonically or romantically or the secret third option that's just insanely codependent affection.

Not sure who ends up rescuing them, but I'm thinking either a) Tim gets suspicious, b) the Outlaws go hunting, or c) Cass realises they have Jason and immediately freaks out. Whoever, they meet up with Team Phantom. Tucker and Sam been on the run since Danny was caught, and Jazz could be in Arkham? Or dead, or on the run too. Team Phantom was only held back by their lack of muscle (that's usually Danny), and now that they have trained fighters on their side, they're able to break in and get their boys. Cue long healing journey and revenge time.

Danny goes to a new School

So! When Danny got expelled from his High School, it wasn't really a big Suprise. He had missed for too many days or just walked out in the middle of Class, and his grades were lower than anyone else in the school. It was just a matter of time really.

When confronted by his Parents, he had just claimed that it was the constant ghost attacks getting to him (not a total lie) and that he was sorry.

Well, his parents tried to help.

After hearing about his supposed Fear of Ghosts, they decided that it was a good idea for him to go to school somewhere outside of Amity Park, so he could focus on his Schoolwork and not be distracted by the constant Attacks.

Of course no School wanted to accept a problem student like Danny, so they were forced to look into alternative schools to find one that would accept him. And they did! So they had Danny pack his bags, promise to call regularly, and shipped him off to his new School.
