💘An AU where the Bat kids are cupids each specializing in different forms of love (Eros, Philia, Storge, Pragma, Ludus, Mania, Philautia, Agape, etc) and the sexually tense competitive bickering between Dick and Jason is obvious to everyone but them, driving the others mad💘

It’s more worldbuilding vibes than concrete plot right now but it’d be a fun one to do some day (or see someone else try)

Hi, I hope you're doing great! I originally suggested that video, and I'm really sorry I forgot to warn you about its length… While watching it, I drew parallels between its themes and those in No Glory and most stories in general…

It's fair to say that these narratives reflect socially constructed power imbalances that have been passed down through generations… The video's narrator pointed out that most romance stories are actually about becoming more powerful, even though it's not noticeable at first...

Readers get more than just dopamine hits from anticipation; they can sense intense emotions often lacking in our repetitive lives…

Well, for many, it's easier to express hate and dislike than understanding and kindness… I might be projecting here...

Personally, I recognize my obsession with two fictional characters' complex dynamics as an escape or addiction from my emotionally stunted life… Although I'm not a robot, I do express emotions—a lot, actually… Still, novels provide emotional doses that might take months or years to experience in real life…

Sorry for going off on a tangent, and don't mind me; this is what "speaking my mind" means, I suppose, as sentences are patched together in hopes they'll make sense in the end… Again, massive respect for the writers out there and what you do… It's sad that words are now just codes that could be taken as inspiration for others who won't realize or appreciate the actual contribution ever… Reality sucks sometimes...

I just wanted to appreciate your writing in a different way after getting a dose of self-awareness through that video...

So for both protagonists in your stories, Harry and Hermione (this new chapter added something that wasn't there before in her character—she is mysterious which makes B&G a lot more anticipatory, in my opinion) it's probably a quest for power, but there are more emotional subtleties, as your stories amazingly showcase almost all forms of love like,

more than coherent enough! 🫂 I’m almost done with the video, and it has been a really enjoyable thing to listen to. I half expected the narrator to mention bell hooks when taking about all the kinds of love! One of my favorite parts, that was the central focus of my art thesis. But yeah I loved it, 10/10, if only everyone who gets so butt hurt when fics don’t include “top” and “bottom” tags would watch and listen to it too!

Ludus 5

What seduction techniques are most likely to be effective when it comes to your OC? Are there some things guaranteed to get them going? Or are they immune to such things?

Recently I’ve been firming up my hc that he’s demisexual. He talks a big game and likes to pretend he’s interested in sex, but it’s all another deflection technique. In reality he’s had no more than one or two subpar experiences and thinks of sex transactionally until he gets with Siavash and then suddenly there’s a whole new world opening up. He’s immune to it up until then, and then… pretty much anything works. The most effective techniques are things that put him at ease and make him feel safe enough to be vulnerable: comforting touches, kind words, reassurances. He’s a complete sucker for guitar music too.

Pragma 4

After the initial fires of passion cool to some degree, what would keep your OC engaged in a relationship? Shared goals? Similar values? Or contented companionship?

This is the source of some confusion for him and Siavash after the game story (avoiding spoilers by not saying what exactly). They experiment a lot, in some cases too much, in the hope of keeping the flame alive. They share the same goals and values (the Project, for those who know), but contentment is the enemy. So there’s a lot of thrill-seeking and boundary-testing at first, but eventually they settle on orbiting one another at a not-too-comfortable distance, fully committed but not joined at the hip like they were during the Crusades. They’re at their best when adventuring and getting up to shenanigans together. That does seem to stoke the flames of passion pretty reliably.

Philautia 4

Which of your OC's qualities makes them the most proud? Do they think more people should be like them in this regard? Or do they quite like being rare in possessing it?

Aw, this is a tough one for Woljif, who again talks a big game as a way of deflecting and hiding his lack of a sense of self-worth. (As we know and love him.) He’s not entirely unaware that he’s quicker on the uptake than a lot of people around him, though. Obviously a useful trait in a conman, being two steps ahead of everybody. And as a child the only praise he ever received, albeit begrudging, was when he picked up spells with remarkable ease. He's also proud of having come up from nothing and having built up his street-smarts and survival skills. Unfortunately he’s internalized the message that people like him are trash, so there’s another side to that coin – he’s proud when it comes to other “lowlifes” like him, but it also makes him feel even more like an outcast in the company of Crusader-types.

David / Justin Ludus 2. Is your OC particularly skilled at flirting? Have they had to practice this or does it just happen naturally? David would say no. His friends would say yes. He's friendly and lovable, cheeky and snarky when he's feeling good. The mix is very appealing and can attract more attention than he intends. But he doesn't flirt consciously. Except with his partner. And Ryder.

2.Is your OC particularly skilled at flirting? Have they had to practice this or does it just happen naturally? Oh yeah. Justin flirts with anything with a brain. Openly and bluntly, or subtly, depending on the moment. For him, flirting is a way to control his surroundings. The more someone falls under his influence, the better he can control them. He pushes his skills to perfection: the perfect smile, the appropriate movements, the right topics of conversation. He can read people well, is extremely attentive, and has an impressive memory that helps him recall all the little pieces of information that can be useful to him. He can talk about things he hates with interest and cheerfulness, so that his conversation partner is completely enchanted.

But there is one limit. If he likes someone and is genuinely interested in them, he will not flirt.

David / Justin Pragma 2. What is the biggest challenge that your OC has had to overcome in a long-term relationship or friendship? What helped them get through this? David's biggest challenge is accepting the free space a partner needs. Because he doesn't need any. He is far too afraid of being alone with himself and his thoughts. That's why he's more than clingy when it comes to his partner. In a relationship, he will address the problem, but if the partner doesn't take this need seriously, it will become a problem in the long run. If the partner takes it seriously, everything is fine. David is willing to look for solutions and work on himself. The most successful way is to fill the gaps with friends and minimize the times when he is really alone.

2. What is the biggest challenge that your OC has had to overcome in a long-term relationship or friendship? What helped them get through this? This is where it gets a little complicated. Justin likes to be looked after and to feel that someone cares and is interested in him. BUT, he must not feel restricted or controlled. I'm not saying he doesn't like it, it's a definite IT'S NOT POSSIBLE. This is a challenge he can hardly withstand. Sometimes he will not say where he is going, or he will come back very late. Most of the time he will tell you where he has been, but not always. Most of the time the partner starts with innocent questions, "Where have you been? Will you be back for dinner?" It goes well for a moment, but then Justin starts throwing little verbal punches more and more often, not insulting, but deeply emotionally hurtful. Should the partner also add restrictions, such as: Stay home today. Don't go there alone. I don't want you to do that; it will be dangerous. Such an attempt is usually enough to trigger an initial flight reaction. Then he throws himself into the wild nightlife. Uncontrolled, intoxicated by the urge for freedom, he will not come home that night. With luck, such a night will end without a fling. But it always ends with self-hatred, which is the most dangerous thing in his life.

For Lia Philautia 5. Has your OC always had the same opinion of themselves or has this changed over time? Have they learned to love themselves - perhaps with the help of others - as their journey progressed? Or have the consequences of their actions only served to erode their sense of self-worth? Lia has completely changed her view of her skills. She used to hate everything she could do because it wasn't her choice to become what she is. But now she appreciates herself for her abilities, she is aware of what she can do and is proud of it. However, she does not include social skills. She still sees herself as a kind of fighting machine, with impressive powers, but not lovable. She is always surprised when people try to convince her otherwise. It has taken her many years and a lot of help from others to realize that she is more than that, and that being able to love as unconditionally as she does is a virtue.

For David Eros 3. How do they feel about public displays of romantic affection? Does it make them uncomfortable? How do they feel if a romantic partner kisses them in public? David had always watched with envy how people showed their affection in public. But for well-known reasons, he has always been afraid to do it himself. The moment this fear is unfounded, his limiting barriers fall. David loves public displays of affection. He needs it. He loves when his partner's hand never leaves his back or when their hands are inseparable. He kisses unabashedly in front of large crowds and enjoys the envious glances. When David loves, he is willing to show it to the world. (Provided, of course, it doesn't put anyone in danger.)

Thank you, Sphinx! These are amazing questions!! They really got me thinking about how for all of her stubbornness and self-possession, she really has some desperately people-pleasing tendencies.

Philautia – Self Love.

1. Does your OC have a healthy sense of their own worth and value? Or do they see themselves as failing to live up to their original potential? Perhaps they are convinced of their own sinful or inadequate nature?

Well, this is the question with Agria, isn't it! The answer really depends on what the words "healthy," "worth," and "value," mean, exactly. She would absolutely say yes! Agria thinks she's cool and smart and--critically!--good at things. It's completely external. She likes herself to the extent that she finds herself to be useful to other people, and she's excellent at finding ways to do so. A lot of that desire is totally self-driven: She likes doing things! She wants to know what she's capable of. But it's also a product of how she's been brought up. It's an implicit "if you really love me, you would do this for me,"-type thing that she carries forward. To her, if she fails or, god forbid, gives up, it's because she didn't love the people around her enough, which is a very difficult pill to swallow. Failing herself is already awful, but she cannot handle failing others.

3. Does your OC believe that it is important to love themselves in the first instance? Perhaps in order to be able to give and receive love authentically? Or because they believe first and foremost in "looking after number one"?

I don't think Agria has a great handle on what self-love actually is. She thinks she does; she's immensely confident and has convinced herself that those things are the same, but in her quiet moments, I don't think she really likes herself unless she's accomplishing something, and that's a feeling she has projected onto everyone else, too. She wouldn't ever put it this way, but in her heart of hearts, she thinks she has to earn love, to do something to deserve it. How she feels about herself is immaterial.

Philia – Affectionate, Platonic Love.

3. What qualities does your OC most value in a friend? Loyalty? Shared sense of humour? Or something else?

Agria likes a lot of things in a potential friend: shared interests and a sense of humor go a long way, and she's willing to try just about anything once if it looks like it might be fun. But more than that, she enjoys a character, someone with a distinct personality and perspective. For all that she hates being criticized, she hates being mindlessly flattered even more. She wants honesty, even if she might stomp her feet and whine after she gets it. She likes people who can match her considerable intensity. She is one of those intolerable people who like to argue for fun and enjoys being challenged to think about things differently.

💄 [LIPSTICK] ~ What’s your favorite outfit of S/I’s that they’ve worn? Ah, that would have to be the last IPC event we attended together. Remiel seems to like 'outdoing' me at these things, but I never mind when he always looks incredible. He wore the most gorgeous dress, a deep burgundy with a slit at the thigh. He insisted on wearing heels with it, which was wholly unnecessary, as he's tall enough, but... yes. Aeons. I'm getting carried away... 🍑 [PEACH] ~ If you had to describe S/I with a flavor, which would you pick? Cherry. I'm unsure why cherry in particular, but that has always been the first thing that comes to mind. 📗 [BOOK] ~ What’s your favorite random fun-fact that you know about S/I? Hm. Rem used to be a keen horse-rider in his youth. His family own a small farm with a wonderful horse named Lucifer, and Remiel rather enjoyed riding it when his health permitted him to do so. Lucifer is now too old to be ridden, but Rem still enjoys looking after him when we visit his family on the weekends. 🦠 [VIRUS] ~ How do you care for S/I when they’re sick? It's not too different from how I care for him on a day to day basis, in truth. As Rem is disabled and also has a handful of chronic illnesses, I already assist him with cooking, bathing, managing tasks and the like, so it's incredibly similar. He's put on immediate bed rest, and I provide him with the medications and fluids he needs to get better. He tends to get sick rather easily, so I do my best in my day to day life to avoid situations where I could possibly pick something up unknowingly and pass it on to him. It's a reason I wear my bust often. I am lucky in the aspect that I very rarely become unwell, so I can afford to stay in proximity of him when he's feeling under the weather without suffering the consequences.

For the Love Promts

Pragma 3. Are your OC's parents still together? To what degree do they look to their own parents as a model for their own ideal relationship?

Tristian and Elwyse never separated. They were loving parents and used their own differences very well to always be there for their daughter at the right moment. Tishlia is very similar to her mother in character, which leads to a lot of friction. She had a much more harmonious relationship with her father. Tishlia did not understand her parents' relationship when she was young, she always had the feeling that her parents' life was quite boring and that her mother had given up all adventurousness and her fighting spirit for her husband and the kingdom. She definitely did not want to become like her mother and therefore started rebelling against the life that was meant for her at an early age.

Another issue of contention was her parents' faith. Her mother became more and more affiliated with Saranrea over time, which Tishlia didn't really understand. Sarenrea's influence on her family was always a thorn in her side, especially because she was always told she was a gift from the goddesses. But she never wanted to be someone's gift, she just wanted to be herself and free of such stories with expectations pinned on her. When a 'brother' was put in front of her, a young deva who was supposed to learn in her family how mortal relationships work, she was finally convinced that Sarenrae thought her family was nothing but a funny experiment. Accordingly, her anger grew at all the gods who thought they could interfere directly in the lives of mortals. (Didn't make it easy for Iomedae).

As much as she loved her parents, Tishlia did not consider their marriage or their life's work as something worth striving for and was always intent on going her own way. This, however, made her more like her mother than anything else.

It was only many years later that Tishlia found out what exactly it all meant and what was behind all her parents' decisions. It was then that she first felt she really understood them and had a chance to make peace with it. The consistency of her parents' relationship became her role model, because she had to acknowledge without envy that they were always several years ahead of her and Daeran.

Philautia 1 - Does your OC have a healthy sense of his own worth and value? Or do they see themselves as falling short of their original potential? Perhaps they are convinced of their own sinful or inadequate nature?

This is a difficult question. Tishlia has a lot of confidence, but it always cracks when she feels the burden of responsibility. She has found ways to deal with it and conserve her energy, but even when things are going well, she considers herself unfit for the responsibility. She works much better as part of a team, and when she can count on the support of those closest to her, she is at her best.

In everything else, she knows her worth and trusts her knowledge, skills, and strength completely. In battle, she tends to overestimate herself and lacks the fear of pain. She takes advantage of having a capable healer at her back who won't let her out of his sight.

In her younger years, she often went too far and tried many things. This often got her into trouble. But it also helped her learn a lot about herself. She realizes her occasional desire for fun and sinfulness, and accepts this part of herself unconditionally. She knows her limits, but is willing to push them from time to time.

Ludus 4 - Who was your OC's first crush? How do they feel about it now?

There was just one time when Lia was a little in love, before she went off on to Kenabres. Her parents had convinced a winegrower to grow the region's first wine near the town. Lia was more than fascinated by this craft, and she was often found at the winegrower's farm. The man was delighted by the princess's enthusiasm, as she learned quickly and was always eager to help. It was not until the winery was built ready and the first harvest was a success that some of his family joined him. Among them was Nathan, the winemaker's son, who was Lia's age. Nathan was smart, funny, open-minded, and Lia began to dream a little of a life as a winemaker.

Before the little flirtation could become more serious, Nathan disappeared. An unknown sponsor had fulfilled Nathan's biggest, unreachable dream and sent him to the Acadamae in Korvosa. It was only a year later that Tishlia found out by chance that one of her friends was responsible, and she learned too late of his jealousy.

Philia 2

Does your OC find it easy to make friends? Or are there barriers to them doing so? If so then are these due to issues of inclination, communication, or something else entirely?

Brair has A LOT of barriers up, mostly to protect herself. She lost a lot of people in the past, because of her own actions, and is very worried about getting hurt like that again. She can build professional relationships with people because she knows there is a line drawn on how much someone needs to know about her, or how much she cares for someone. All of this can stem from her distrust in others (and sometimes herself)

Becoming her friend is possible, but can be a long and rough road, if someone is willing to make the trek.

Philia 3

What qualities does your OC most value in a friend? Loyalty? Shared sense of humour? Or something else?

Loyalty and Trust are pretty given for ant relationship. Briar has been through to much not to seek these things out, almost desperately.

Something else she can value is Independence. She couldn't stand someone who was overly clingy, or constantly asking for help. She would enjoy someone she could talk with and bounce ideas or conversations off of. But not someone who would always be seeking something from her. It makes her feel used, or that she's only been kept around to be a tool of some kind. (which would open an old wound.)

Storge 4

Does your OC have any siblings? If so then did their parents have a favourite growing up? Has their relationship with their sibling changed in adulthood? If they don't have any siblings then do they perhaps feel they have missed out on an important relationship? Do they have any especially close friends who go some way towards filling that role?

Briar has two sisters. An older sister and a younger sister (named La Belle and Cinderella), the younger one is unfortunately gone, having lost her life at a very young age and how it happened has affect Briar deeply. She was once close with both of her siblings when they were little, but the loss of Cinderella created a domino affect of many tragedies in her life and by the end of it her elder sister had run off to protect herself, leaving Briar to deal with a lot all by herself. Briar desperately misses her family, as she has seen none of them since that tragic time, and has been very lonely ever since. It's because of this that she tends to act more caring towards siblings, Nozel's especially, over time. She's not afraid to put them in their place should they do wrong but will also take care of them should she catch them having a bad time.

Philautia 5

Has your OC always had the same opinion of themselves or has this changed over time? Have they learned to love themselves - perhaps with the help of others - as their journey progressed? Or have the consequences of their actions only served to erode their sense of self-worth?

Briar was once a very energetic and happy individual. The kind of girl you would see skipping class, or if she was attending would be napping on the desk or day dreaming while staring out the window. She was free spirited and a lover of dreams, thinking that everyone should dare to have big dreams and good sleep to live out those dreams. She tended to gardens, loved the feeling of dirt between her toes and the breeze in her hair. However like anyone you grow up and loose that innocence. She would be given a job and that job would slowly chip away at her heart until she became the cold and distant person she is in current time.

Has your OC always had the same opinion of themselves or has this changed over time? Have they learned to love themselves - perhaps with the help of others - as their journey progressed? Or have the consequences of their actions only served to erode their sense of self-worth?

Aw 🥺 My boy is such a bundle of insecurities, the worst of which I think is his meta-insecurity that those insecurities will show – because if they do you can bet someone’ll use them against him. What he finds out over the course of the Crusades is that he’s valued. He sits on two of the Commander’s councils and makes himself useful in the field, notably by coordinating under-the-table supply chains. In my fic he even creates a Midnight Council to smooth out friction between the Thieflings and the Fellows of the Crusade in Drezen. People are skeptical at first, but he succeeds in avoiding a turf war, and people in the underground start to look up to him. The sense of having worth in people’s eyes is new and highly gratifying for someone like Woljif, who despite himself puts a lot of stock in others’ perception of him. And of course, learning he’s loved and most of all, that he deserves to be loved, is a turning point. So his self-esteem grows immensely over the course of the story, and there’s a risk that it could go to his head, but Woljif’s too down-to-earth, smart and cautious to get overly cocky.

Ludus 2

Is your OC particularly skilled at flirting? Have they had to practice this or does it just happen naturally?

He will certainly claim to be a world-class flirt and knows all kinds of lines that are guaranteed to have them swooning at his feet… but I think when he really tries, which is rare, his insincerity is so obvious it immediately puts people off. And that’s in the case he does succeed in using a smooth line or two, because in the Ten Thousand Delights he gets tongue-tied meeting a certain succubus. Short answer—he’s terrible at it. With Siavash the situation is different because they’re friends, and Woljif’s already implicitly aware that his feelings are way beyond the pick-up line stage anyway. In fact instead of flirting he’s consciously trying to hide his interest, with more or less success, and as I wrote about before when he does make up his mind to confess it’s the accidental sincerity that wins.

Agape 3

To what extent does your OC believe in the value (or even existence) of true altruism? Do they see an unselfish concern for the welfare of others as being naïve or foolish? Or as a moral quality to which people should aspire?

Going for the throat with this one. OK so obviously caring about other people’s welfare is a scam. People will try to convince you friends and family look out for each other, the easier to fleece you when your back’s turned. Right? Right chief?
