This right here? This is a hell of a roster. PPW Four Year Anniversary Show, in honor of our friend Kyle, who passed earlier in the year. SPW is my life but PPW is my second home and I’m proud to say I have been on every single show these last four years.

July 4th, 1776 America was born. July 19th, 2019 The Global Phenomenon shakes the very foundation of @ppwpetaluma and establishes a new chapter in his conquest to usurp his throne. @aironskye , I will shatter the very notion that "Heroes" still exist. The common fodder may support you, but I will expose you for who you really are. A fraud acting as some figurehead for underdog. It's almost time to put you down. I will bring down the stratosphere, and leave you...mangled...and forgotten. #JMM #TGP #AironSkye #PPW #Petaluma #PhoenixTheater #ProWrestler #ProWrestling #IndyWrestling #IndyWrestler #Wrestling #Fitness #Athlete #Dreams #Pride #Entertainer #NXT #NJPW #WWE #MLW #PWS #ImpactWrestling #ROH #AEW #HeelLife #HeroesWillFall #NarcissisticNeckBreaker https://www.instagram.com/p/Bzbr6xiJUGQ/?igshid=17ncdaq695vd6

Going to see Little Shop of Horrors. Love the movie, heard the soundtrack, and I even saw the questionable Fox Kids cartoon they aired in the 90s. #littleshopofhorrors #phoenixtheater #audrey #audrey2 #seymour (at Phoenix Theatre)

Spun (Phoenix Theater Indianapolis): The Local Rock Musical
Rock musicals are interesting because there are so few of them, and projects like Spun and RENT require certain details within the music and performances. The first step is finding the right actors. They have to have the right voice. For example, Idina Menzel’s powerful nuances were built into the character she plays in RENT; however, the writer and director had an idea of the voice they were looking for. They were looking for unknown young kids because RENT was about young bohemians with powerful aspirations for freedom and expression.
Spun had similar intentions. The story revolved around the idea of regret and how regret plays into the future decisions that these two characters have to face. However, the voices were the heart of the show- just like every musical. I felt the story was refined and fit the characters we saw singing on the stage. Lisa Ermel played Molly, the scorned little sister in a tormented family- and oh my god her voice!
I found Lisa’s voice very tantalizing because I was comparing her voice to Idina’s. I was inspired by her power and it was shocking and exciting when she came right up to the audience and belted out her notes. I honestly prefer singers with power because of what I have been exposed to in the past. When I was growing up I was a huge Streisand fan and she was notorious for having a huge voice and Idina’s is even bigger. Lisa’s voice was a crucial aspect of the show because this character needed that powerful voice. Nonetheless, compared to her co-star, her voice was definitely was more powerful.  Chris Roe played Jesse (Molly’s older brother) who, despite his failing career, was the optimist of the show. If you compared their two voices you would notice a huge difference. While Lisa’s voice is powerful, Chris’s voice is emotional and made me think another show called Once. In the show, Jesse seems to be the one who writes the music while Molly has the voice that brings it to live. I found this to be a dynamic layer of character development and the nuances in each character played up to that. The fact that Molly has a more power voice and seems to be the better performer proves that idea. Whereas, Jesse is more about the impactful moments.
So another thing I think is important when going to see a musical is where you sit. When I went to see IF/Then I was four rows from the stage, which to me made a huge difference. I feel the show would have been different if I sat ten rows back, but being so close you felt more into the moment. The further away you are from the stage you can become detached from the moment. You feel like you’re watching instead of being in the moment, and that is the amazing thing about musical theater. The further along the show goes (if the show is a success) the more emotionally connected you are. For me though, it’s easier to be immersed into the drama and action the closer I am to the stage.
I believe that there really are no downfalls to musical theater because the music (if done well) acts as a frame for the story. The music gives you a chance to feel through the show on a deeper level. This show was efficient in conveying the emotions of these two characters.  This show has to be my favorite because of how much I love musicals. I loved seeing how all the layers played into the story telling and played into the music. The fact the band was behind a screen and it alluded to the fact that this garage was there one place they could always create and perform their music. Also the fact the band was behind a screen made it feel they weren’t really there, like the band was in the character’s subconscious. I thought that was a creative thing they did.
All in all, the show was the best I have seen here in Indy. It was simple enough that it could survive in a small theater environment. Usually musicals are supposed to be commercially appealing, which tend to be bigger and the production values are higher. To see a small musical like Spun was a relief that not all musicals have to be these big elaborate spectacles, but can be simple and beautiful expressions of humanity.
