Gordon Parks and His Impact on Photography
Gordon Park was very versatile. He could do something as simple as fashion shoots, then turn around and bring awareness to the plights, trials and tribulations of African Americans. as a civil rights activist, writer, and humanitarian whose work has left an unforgettable mark on the history of photography. He used his lens as a powerful weapon to expose racial discrimination, poverty, and social injustices while also capturing the resilience, beauty, and strength of the African American community.  Parks' work remains relevant today as it continues to inspire and provoke discussions on equality, representation, and social change.
Gordon Parks' journey as a photographer began in the 1940s. His photographs feature a unique blend of photojournalism, portraiture, and cinematic aesthetics, reflecting his versatile talents as a filmmaker. Parks was known for his ability to capture authentic and emotionally charged moments, refining the essence of his subjects' experiences into powerful and meaningful visual narratives. Gordon Parks’ also was known for his fashion photography skills, in celebrated magazines like Vogue, Life and Glamour.
Although Parks was notoriously known for his contribution to social awareness, his fashion photography was also a forced to be reckoned with. He was able to combine the poise and statuesque of models, the limberness of the clothing , and all the while capturing the vibrant background of the streets.
One of Parks' most significant contributions to photography was his ability to document the inhabited experiences of African Americans during a turbulent era. His famous series, such as "Harlem Gang Leader" and "The Restraints: Open and Hidden," provided an intimate look into the daily struggles faced by individuals living in poverty, as well as the resilience and strength they displayed despite social and economic obstacles. Parks' photographs reveal the harsh realities of life while also getting rid of stereotypes through humanizing and honoring his subjects.
Parks' ability to connect with his subjects on a personal level enabled him to capture their stories with authenticity and compassion. This can be seen in his iconic photographs like "American Gothic, Washington, D.C.", where he captured the intimate moment of a cleaning woman with a mop standing before the American flag. Parks' work demonstrated his commitment to representing the humanity of his subjects, making their lives visible to a wider audience, and inspiring empathy and understanding.
Gordon Parks' photography has left an indelible mark on the world of visual storytelling, inspiring generations of photographers, filmmakers, and artists. Also bringing cultural awareness to the unaware, glorifying African Americans at a time where they were being projected in a negative light. His revolutionary assignments, including becoming the first African American staff photographer at Life magazine and his photodocumentary project, "The Learning Tree," demonstrated his dedication to using his platform as a means of social change. Parks paved the way for future generations of African American photographers, who continue to build on his legacy by continuing bringing awareness to representation, identity, and social inequality.
In conclusion, Gordon Parks' powerful photography work across various genres and social issues played a crucial role in documenting history, initiating conversations, and challenging societal norms. His unique approach to storytelling, coupled with his unparalleled empathy for his subjects, continues to inspire and move audiences today. Parks' ability to blend art and activism through his photographs remains a testament to the power of visual storytelling in advocating for social change. As we explore the rich history of photography, Gordon Parks' work should be revered and studied, highlighting his instrumental role in reshaping the narrative of African American experiences through the lens.

The magic of photography
I was looking through a stack of large prints from one of my #photodocumentary projects, and this image made me think about the magic of photography. This famous business down in #NewOrleans is no longer there… except in the images that captured its presence. The next time you pass that old building you have been meaning to photograph, stop and do so. One day you will drive past and it will no…

Subic Bay Freeport Zone (SBFZ) has a long history that dates back to the Spanish colonial period. It was established on 1966, and since then it has been a major economic hub of the Philippines. SBFZ has grown into a bustling commercial center with numerous businesses and industries operating in its vicinity. It is now home to many international companies who are taking advantage of its strategic location and infrastructure.
The area has a rich historical records of Spanish colonization, American occupation, and Filipino independence. I went here last February 24, 2023- a day before the celebration of People’s Power in the Philippines. From Manila to Olongapo, I’ve seen nothing but beauty and destruction from its people to its place, and forgotten past. My heart is disheartened but I cannot sit still and need to look back.
Pilipinas, ang ganda mo pero ang hirap mo mahalin.
