The Illustrated Encyclopedia of Rock [NEW 1978 Edition] - Dobie Gray (I believe I was in 6th grade, at the time, still on AM radio - “Oh, give me the beat, boys, and free my soul I wanna get lost in your rock and roll and drift away.”) Born in Brookshire, TX in 1942, #dobiegray was one of eight children, and had a poor upbringing - his parents were sharecroppers. His first album release, Drift Away (1973) was produced by Mentor Williams in Nashville with the aid of many distinguished sidemen, including #davidbriggs #reggieyoung #kennymalone and #troyseals At the time, it was still unusual for a Black singer to be recording in Nashville with country musicians, but the album was an unqualified success, and the single, #driftaway written by Williams, became No. 1 in the U.S. #rockandroll #classicrock #theseventies #mcarecords https://www.instagram.com/p/CGjCX9Bli9y/?igshid=2lyjzb82nf2f
