The Puzzle At Pineview School, The Nancy Drew Mystery Stories #90 (1989)

In this back-to-school adventure, Nancy investigates a private school, Pineview College, to find out who is sabotaging the college’s girls’ soccer team’s fundraising efforts and why. The team is coached by Nancy’s friend George and Nancy’s initial involvement is simply to turn up and cheer the team along. The team’s goalkeeper, Janine, has donated two high-value brooches, a gift from her mother, to be sold at auction at the Pineview Soccer Ball, to raise money for equipment and facilities. However, at the last minute, someone steals the brooches and substitutes them with cheap fakes. This leads Mr Garrison, the college principal, to call off the auction. Nancy surmised that the motivation for the crime was not simple theft, but an attempt to destroy the reputation of the soccer team. Janine, whose mother would benefit from an insurance pay-out following the theft, asks the girl detective to take the case to ensure her mother does not come under suspicion. Nancy must work fast to discover the real criminal and prevent the collapse of girls’ football at Pineview.

The obvious suspects are the members of a rival soccer team who would like nothing more than to see the demise of their bitter opponents, but Nancy thinks this is too convenient and begins to dig deeper into conflicts and attitudes within the college itself, including intra-team disputes.

There are a number of suspicious characters, all of which turn out to be false leads and in the meantime, Nancy and George receive the usual threats and assaults from unknown assailants who clearly want the girls out of Pineview. In the end Garrison gives the game away somewhat by drugging Nancy with hot chocolate and secrets her away in a forest cabin. Nancy escapes and goes to the soccer game where she reveals the principal’s guilt, who then flees. Nancy and George pursue Garrison, cornering him at a waterfall. Desperate, Garrison threatens to throw the brooches into the water at which point George kicks them out of his hand and Nancy catches them. The broken Garrison then surrenders and the girls take him prisoner, handing him over to the police. It appears the motive for the theft was base greed after all…

KELLY | [sighs] You are full of questions today, aren't ya? KELLY | Ugh! Who just leaves their boxes all over? Animals, I swear to god... ARTHUR | What kind of animals, Mommy?
