okay last(?) week i was really in the mood to rec some fics and then ran out of energy to actually do it but tonight i have a LAPTOP, i slammed a cup of coffee at 8 p.m., and most importantly have a willing heart, so here is a compilation of the various asks i received:

generations by talahui (hockey fic, ej/nate): except my powerpoint would be about how this is the most important, exactly perfect fic for me and i would make the author (beloved) also present, but much more articulately, on the themes and content of the fic itself, as i am well known as an inarticulate pile of sentient goo. however, here is the loose outline of what my slides would be:

future full of yesterdays (1d, narry): godddddd i love this fic, i re-read it a few weeks ago after many years of not having read it and it really held up for me, my powerpoint would be a little rusty but very sincere and every slide would be like 'why this fic is perfect, cont.'

2. a fic you would recommend to get someone into a fandom or pairing you love or have loved

listen i really had to think about this, because hockey fandom is soooooo. like there's so much good stuff, and different stuff, and just. it brings a tear to my eye. but i need to be true to who i am, and i always try to rec stuff that i haven't before, so here is a mix of rarepair fics of varying lengths/ratings/players:

laundry day by screamingcryingthrowingup (~3k, pinto/sanderson). this fic is like if you dared someone to spit in your mouth because you didn't think they would do it but you kind of thought they might because they're a little bit of an asshole and then they actually do spit in your mouth and you're like oh shit

since we're here anyway by robokittens (~4k, chabby/josh). just a really, really good fwb plus a lil extra

cut from the bone by underfallingstars (~80k, i did say there would be varying lengths lol, roope/wyjo). hanahaki disease fic!!! bless this author, i was tearing my hair out through the WHOLE THING

hold by frausorge (2.4k, dillon/jones) for the magic au lovers, i reallllly enjoyed how magic worked in this fic

at home in the uncanny valley by ionthesparrow (~36k) i remember reading this when i was just dipping my toes into hockey rpf and sending it to la and also clawing my face off

3. A fic from a past fandom that you still reread (or at least still think about if you don't revisit old fandoms)

let's go with nevada's fault (~35k, ziall, 1d fandom). ultimate comfort pairing, comfort fic. every three years i go down a big ziall rabbit hole and never ever regret it

4. Fic(s) you would/did create fanart for

one million years ago i made a collage for steph's luckyverse fic. i'm not really an arty person, but i do like doing stuff with my hands

5. Fic(s) that keep you up at night (Either reading or thinking about)

ok well quite literally when i woke up at 3 a.m. on saturday morning FOR NO FUCKING REASON two weekends ago, while also still fuming about season four of the magicians, i read the entirety of damage control for a walking corpse (queliot, ~75k) and then, more slowly, the rest of that series, which really just. the beauty of all life. is something to weep about.

6. Great Angst Fic

i'm not the biggest pure angst fan, like i will definitely read it but some level of angst or whump often crosses the line to straight-up melodrama and that's when i have a hard time sticking with it HOWEVER if you haven't read jes' anything that touches (~50k sidgeno, mind the notes) then i think you should.

in a different way, angst that kind of pries you apart and puts you back together but not in quite the right way, like in a way that's still beautiful and still you but not exactly, try how planets form by caltrain (3k, dumo/yamo)

It's glorious how literally everybody knows at this point that no matter what the conversation, they must connect the two of them in it because that's just the way it is now.

@touchstoneaf I really agree. What was interesting to me about the fan mentioning Michael is the unspoken implication that David would have automatically picked a TV show that Michael is in. We know that David has watched Michael on TV at least several times before (the documentary last week, and then during lockdown a few years ago, when they both specifically mentioned watching each other), but I don't know that that connection would have been made four years ago in the same way it's being made now.

Also, none of this is to say that Michael is the only thing David watches on TV, or that he would have answered with a show of Michael's had the fan not added that qualifier. There was no reason to expect that he would have, even, because David does watch plenty of other shows and have numerous other interests outside of Michael, and has had a celebrated career independent of Michael for many decades now.

But that connection. People at that panel asked about Doctor Who and Jessica Jones and there was discussion of David's other co-stars...yet none of them came up quite like this, in a personal, offhanded way. The way you'd bring up someone special. I think people connect Michael and David like that because what they mean to each other has become so clear. And I really love that...

But like, god yes. If given absolute power I swear that everyone who posts about 'grimdark unrealistically depressing fantasy' will be forced to write an essay on one of a) the First Crusade b) the English Anarchy c) The Harrying of the North d) Chevauchée in the latter hundred years war or e) the sack of Magdenburg.

I kind of wonder how ReTi would work if Tifa hates Shinra so much for what happened to her hometown. I suppose in an AU where Tifa had left Midgar for work and she never witnessed what happened at the Nibelheim reactor in person. Also poor Cloud perishes with Zack in the ambush so nobody ever told her. She doesn't join Avalanche and maybe even joins the Turks because of Reno?

I mean sure, you can have an AU like that, for example. Turk!Tifa is a pretty hot idea, whether she's with them sincerely or infiltrating them for Avalanche~

If you'd like canon examples on why Tifa could warm up to Reno tho, Rebirth and Before Crisis and Advent Children give us some good crumbs. Like Rebirth+BC info about the Nibelheim incident hint that Reno and Rude just may have been the ones who saved Tifa and brought her to Corel. Then there's Aerith's speech in Rebirth about forgiveness and releasing anger being true strength, right after the trials made them relive what Shinra had done to them and her soft talk with Tseng. So, make friends with the Turks to defeat Sephiroth 😎

Most ReTi fics are set around Advent Children era tho, since Tifa is shown to be very friendly to Reno and Rude in that. Tifa seems to have it in her to be friends with the Turks, and really the parts of Shinra she hates are the same that also put the Turks through shit in Before Crisis (Shinra Sr, Heidegger, Scarlet, Hojo).

With shipping I think it's supposed to be about fun and games and I just like both those characters separately and think putting them together creates fun scenarios to play with 😌

Hello, Anon. For those who might've missed it, this is referring to this post. I've seen some confusion sprouting up already about what I meant, so I appreciate you writing in to ask for clarification instead of inventing things whole cloth and jumping to conclusions.

Over the past week, David has been incredibly busy with appearances and events, including flying cross-Atlantic to appear at two different conventions in the same weekend. At several of these appearances, he has worn the same trousers and almost the same outfit (down to the same socks) multiple times, to where a number of people (such as the DT Fashion page) have noticed and pointed it out...

He also wore the same grey shirt/undershirt seen in the second picture (from the Chris Chibnall event) in a new promo video that he and Georgia recorded for the podcast this week. The promo video seems to have been recorded/posted as soon as David stepped off his flight from America, and he then wore it straight to the Chris Chibnall event that same evening.

So that has left me (and others) wondering about the reasons behind this repeated outfit wearing, especially given that it would make sense if he didn't have time to go home and change...but we know that David was home because of the promo video that was recorded/posted. And of course he could have washed the socks or the trousers (at home or elsewhere), but that was not the point of my post.

As for who was/wasn't at the event, I was referring to Georgia's absence from the improv comedy event (she was also not at the Chris Chibnall interview the night prior). This was confirmed because she made a specific point of posting about where she did go, which was a play that both her brothers are involved in (acting and behind the scenes). This is not to say that Georgia had to be at David's improv event, and she can of course go to any show or event she wants...but that particular show with her brothers opened on March 11th, which means there were any number of days she could have gone before then. Again, completely her choice. But still an interesting one.

David seemed to have a wonderful time regardless and looked like he was really letting loose, which was surprising because he had previously mentioned being nervous because it was very far out of his comfort zone. Doing something out of your comfort zone is inherently vulnerable, and I'm glad David felt like he could be vulnerable in front of an audience and with the other actors. That was the other piece that I meant about who was there/who wasn't--an audience mainly comprised of fans. So I'm happy that he had so much fun, and that the reports from people who attended have been so overwhelmingly positive.
