blood farms - yet another horrific animal cruelty

More people than ever are awakening to the grim reality of factory farming. Documentaries and investigations have brought greater awareness to what cows, pigs and chickens experience on factory farms. But there is another species that has been profoundly affected too, even if they don’t get the same attention: horses. 

While it’s no secret that horses are used in the production of gelatin, there is another egregious practice that also involves these equine creatures: the extraction of a hormonal serum from pregnant mares, used by the meat industry to boost production of pork.

The livestock industry relies on this hormone to maximize pregnancy and birth. Used mostly on pig farms, but also on sheep and cattle operations, the point is to ensure as many pregnancies as possible, as quickly as possible.

The hormone - pregnant-mare-serum-gonadotrophin, now designated equine chorionic gonadotrophin (eCG) - is usually given first to young sows to induce early puberty, which in turn triggers a kind of superovulation that results in larger litters. Just after they give birth, sows are then given PMSG to immediately induce estrus — the period of time when a female animal is in heat — so the cycle can start all over again. 

Pregnant mares are forced to endure constant cycles of pregnancy and abortion in order to produce the hormone for extraction. Because lower levels of nutrition lead to higher levels of PMSG in the blood, blood farm operators have been found to feed pregnant mares very little, leaving them emaciated.

Germany has identified 36 synthetic alternatives to PMSG that are made without animals, yet the livestock industry continues to source PMSG from blood farms creating a constant cycle of suffering for horses and pigs that has become a hallmark of industrial meat.

ao3 user sheswanderlust i just need to emphasize how much i love your fic paint my spirit gold. it’s so well-written and it hits quite close to home in a lot of ways and god i just. yeah. fernando deserved so much better. and i’ve re-read chapter 9 like, at least 15 times. makes my heart seize in my chest (in like a good cathartic emotional kind of way). as a fic writer myself i hate it when people ask me to update my work so i just want you to know even if you abandoned it right now, what you’ve shared so far has made at least one person (me) feel a lot of emotions. and it has changed me.

I'm answering to your ask quite late, anon, and I'm not sure my words will do justice to how grateful I feel for what you wrote. <3 I am so so happy that my fic resonates with you - I have a deep connection with everything I write, but my relationship with PMSG is something else. It's been an ongoing daydream for so long, and it reconnects many loose ends of my life, my relationship with sports, and with writing. So reading appreciation about it is always special. I have been mentally exhausted for a long time, and haven't found the energy to write (the hard truth of getting a mentally-heavy job lol), but I have everything planned in my head. Stevie and Nando are my safe harbour for when life gets too heavy/stressful/ugly. Not gonna lie, I cannot wait to find the energy to keep writing <3

Add consequences

Don't you hate it when you read a story and the characters do a bunch of legally and morally questionable things and they just live life as it were with no consequences? Your character is not perfect and should not get away scot-free with whatever adventure they just went through. Make there be stakes for going on with their adventure and your character accepts those stakes anyway. It gives depth to your story and helps your reader see what your character values.

WARNING: WARCROSS SPOILERS AHEAD

A great example of this was at the end of the Warcross series by Marie Lu. Now I may be remembering wrong because I did read it a while ago but to my understanding, the main characters did go through a lot of repercussions as, even though they saved the world, they still broke the law and some people made the technology that was capable of taking over people's brains in the first place. (cough cough Hideo cough cough)

So in conclusion, think of yourself as your character's parent. If they don't get home by curfew, they need punishment.

we have literally bred pigs to have ever growing litter sizes, with many sows now giving birth to more piglets than they have nipples. wild boar litter sizes range from 3-8, while the industry litter size average is 18.(x)

then we give the sows pmsg (a hormone from pregnant horses), to make sure they all get into heat at the same time, increasing efficency. the mares whose blood is farmed are regularly abused and mistreated in the process (x).

selective breading, widespread use of antibiotics and other medication have long made animal welfare obsolete. as long as the animal is alive, it can be exploited. and animal agriculture is always trying to figure out just how badly we can treat these animals, just how little can we give them while still increasing profits.

if you believe profits to be the top priority of any other industry (food, fashion, oil), why not also animal agriculture?

Heute möchten wir mit Euch über Blutstuten sprechen, denn leider haben die wenigsten Menschen auf dem Schirm, dass noch etwa 30% der Schweinemastbetriebe in DE das Hormon PMSG (Pregnant Mare Serum Gonadotropin) einsetzen, welches auf solchen Farmen gewonnen wird! 😰

Zuerst einmal ein paar Fakten dazu: 1.: Blutfarmen existieren hauptsächlich in Südamerika (Argentinien, Uruguay, Chile) und Island. Sie dienen der Gewinnung von PMSG, welches eingesetzt wird, um bei Zuchtsauen die Brunst auszulösen und zu synchronisieren.

2.: Alleine in Island gibt es 119 Blutfarmen und mehr als 5.300 Blutstuten, welche dementsprechend über 5.000 Fohlen im Jahr zur Welt bringen, welche aber niemand haben will.

3.: In Südamerika sind es schätzungsweise 10.000 bis 12.000 Stuten, die auf vier Farmen in Uruguay und einer in Argentinien untergebracht sind.

4.: Es gibt aber auch in anderen Ländern Farmen, wie etwa in Russland oder China.

5.: In Island erfolgt die Blutabnahme bei den schwangeren Stuten einmal pro Woche, über einen Zeitraum von bis zu 12 Wochen. Pro Entnahme werden etwa fünf Liter Blut gewonnen, wogegen in Südamerika bis zu 10 Liter "abgezapft" werden!

6.: PMSG ist im Blut der Stuten nur zwei bis drei Monate in erhöhter Konzentration vorhanden.

Die Stuten leiden physisch und psychisch unter der Blutentnahme. So werden sie oft unter Zwang in Fixierboxen getrieben, wobei auch Hunde, Schlagstöcke und Elektroschocks zum Einsatz kommen. Die Blutentnahme erfolgt häufig unter unhygienischen Bedingungen. Dies führt immer wieder zu Infektionen, Verletzungen, Anämie, Stress und in einigen Fällen zum Tod der Tiere! 😰

Fazit: Die Tierindustrie beutet nicht nur die Schweine aus, sondern nutzt auch noch Pferde zur Hormongewinnung - und das nur zur Optimierung der Abläufe in der Schweinezucht! Könnt Ihr ein solches System wirklich noch mit ruhigem Gewissen unterstützen? 😰

Heute möchten wir mit Euch über die Ferkelzucht und damit über Sauen sprechen. Aktuell leben in DE etwa 1,4 Mio. Sauen (in der EU 9-10 Mio.), zumeist in industriellen Großbetrieben mit mindestens 200 Sauen plus Ferkel. Es gibt aber auch Betriebe mit über 1000 Sauen! 😰

Das Leben einer Sau besteht aus folgenden Stationen: 1.: Besamung: Zuchtsauen werden im Alter von etwa 6–8 Monaten zum ersten Mal (meist künstlich) besamt (belegt). 5 Tage zuvor wird ihnen oft das Hormon PMSG aus Stutenblut injiziert, welches die Rausche auslösen soll. Zur Besamung werden sie im Kastenstand fixiert und bleiben dort etwa 4 Wochen.

2. Schwangerschaft (Trächtigkeit): Dauer: ca. 114 Tage. Haltung: Anfangs im Kastenstand, dann in Gruppenhaltung mit stark eingeschränktem Platzangebot.

3. Geburt (Abferkelung) und Säugephase: Dauer: 4 Wochen (28 Tage) Ablauf: Kurz vor der Geburt wird die Sau in den "Abferkelbereich" gebracht – häufig in einen Ferkelschutzkorb, der ihre Bewegungsfreiheit stark einschränkt. Die Ferkel bleiben bei der Mutter, bis sie im Alter von 21–28 Tagen von ihr getrennt (abgesetzt) werden.

4. Erneute Besamung: Nach dem Absetzen der Ferkel wird die Sau innerhalb weniger Tage erneut besamt. Sie zieht also vom Ferkelschutzkorb direkt wieder in den Kastenstand um! 😢

Weitere Fakten: 1.: 150 Tage dauert ein Zyklus, bei welchem das Ziel 14 Ferkel sind. Damit durchlebt eine Sau im Jahr 2,4 Zyklen und bekommt dabei 25-30 Ferkel. 2.: Die Ferkelverluste (z. B. durch Erdrücken, Schwäche, Krankheiten) liegen, je nach Haltungssystem, bei 10-20%. 3.: Nach 5 bis 6 Würfen werden die Tiere im Alter von 3 bis 4 Jahren meist schon an einen Schlachthof verkauft. 😰

Fazit: Was Zuchtsauen erleiden müssen, ist wirklich grausam. Bitte boykottiert deshalb Schweinefleisch und andere Tierprodukte! 😎🌱
