My Left Hand: Part 1

June 1st, 2019

I told myself that if it happened again, I would Call Dr. Ingle. Well I did, and here I am, writing in this damn journal again on doctor’s orders. He said it was, “to keep track of my emotions and to record every instance of the phenomenon, as there seems to be a correlation to my paralysis.” I want to take his big words and shove them up his ass. Why can’t he talk like a regular person? If this is what college does to you, I’m glad I never went, I wouldn’t have made it.

Anyway, what happened was that my hand moved. My left hand. My paralyzed hand. The one that I can't even make a fist with! I was so excited the first time it happened that I spilled my beer. It was just a twitch, but I’ve been waiting over a decade for it. It was like that the second time, third, fourth, and it was only at the fifth time I noticed it moved only when I was busy. By the eighth time, my thumb had curled into my hand without me even realizing it. After that, it got worse, or better, depending on who you ask.

My primary care doctor was ecstatic for me. He’s been with my family for years and basically watched me grow up. He’s the one that recommended Dr. Ingle after my depression and anxiety were affecting my recovery from the accident. He became my therapist and after 9 years of meetings, he has become, and I hate to say it, someone I depend on. It feels wrong for me to rely on another man for comfort, but I didn’t have many choices. If it wasn’t for him, I would have shot myself years ago.

It was a bad time in my life, and I hate thinking about it, but Dr. Ingle always preaches about “feeling the moment” and “letting my inner demons out to play” or some shit like that. He’s full of that Ghandi bullshit, but he’s been right so far. Still though, I can’t rush it. The thoughts still scare me at night. Even as I type, the image of my Pop’s revolver floats in my head. My finger on the trigger, the barrel in my mouth tasting the steel. The hammer drew back, then there’s a voice, then a hand then

I told myself I wasn’t gonna come back to this. It always drags the worst out of me.I hated writing in school, but it hits differently when you’re not forced into it. Anyway, I was told to record every time something new happened, and something happened today. My thumb moved again, but with it twitched my pointer finger. But then, after those brief seconds of movement, my entire left shoulder was numb like I had slept on it. It was odd.

I called Dr. Ingle and told him about it. He told me that it could be from where it hasn’t moved in so long, the muscles have to get used to it again. He then said to keep trying to move it, but not overdo it. I then told him that it didn’t feel like I was the one moving it. He gave a brief explanation about the subconscious and rattled off some theories that flew over my head. I just took it as a sign of things getting better.

In other news, my neighbor from a few doors down has been coming over a bit. Her name is Catherine, but I call her Cathy. We first met a few years ago when her family first moved in. She was still in highschool then and thought I was just some weird disabled guy. That changed when her father drunkenly chased her down the hallway. I stepped out my apartment and knocked him to the ground with my good hand. Her mother chased after crying, cops were called and the bastard got some days in a cell to sober up. Ever since, she’s been an angel in my life. She helps me with errands, helps me up the stairs when my leg is bad and just gives me some company. Just a few days ago, she told me she’s graduating and she wants me there. As a not-related adult, it puts me in a very awkward position, but she batted her eyes a bit and I melted like butter. She reminds me so much of my sister that I had to give in. That’s another slew of memories I don’t want to go through, but that’s like not taking the trash out. After a while, it smells like shit.

My sister died when she was 18, same way my Pops did. Same gun too. She was such a feisty girl. Got loud when she didn’t get her way. She had drive, nothing could put out that fire in her eyes. I guess maybe that’s why it hit me hard when it happened. I still don’t know why she did it. Mama said that suicide runs in my Pops’s family like a sickness. Just as many of them die by old age as they do their own hand. The only note she left said that she wished she had been a better daughter.She hadn’t left anything for me and that hurt me the most. It doesn’t bother me so much now as it did then. I’ve gotten older and some things don’t hurt as much as they used to. I think this may be enough soul searching today. Imma have another beer and call it a night

I went to Cathy’s graduation today. Saw her and all her cute little friends. Know what my favorite thing about highschool girls is? They never get any older! Boy, I don’t know what they’re putting in the water these days but DAMN! ! ! And Cathy, bless her heart, was the most beautiful of them all. She had a killer smile and a tight little body that I couldn’t help but adore. I shouldn’t be having thoughts about a girl that’s almost young enough to be my daughter, but I don’t think she has the same issues.

That girl was so excited to see me there. After chatting with her friends, she ran to me and hugged me tight to her. She had honestly looked surprised I was there. I had looked around earlier and didn’t see either one of her folks. I don’t know if she just didn’t invite them or they decided it wasn’t important enough for them to be there, but as far as I know, I was the only one there for her. When she let go, there were a few wet spots on my shirt where she buried her head. I didn’t point them out.

We chatted a bit, met some of her friends and teachers. She drug me around like a dog, introducing me as “Mr. Daniels, her neighbor”, which left a weird taste in my mouth. I’ve always been used to her calling me Charlie, or Charles if she’s being dramatic.

Everyone was really nice. Although some of the students gave me weird looks, the teachers were really friendly to me. It was really weird until I met the school’s nurse. She met me with a warm smile and told me “how important it was for Catherine to have a good father figure in her life” and then it hit me. I wasn’t the only one aware of what was going on in her home. There was a good chance that every teacher there had at least an idea of what was going on. It pissed me off that not one of them had said anything to the proper authorities, but thinking back on it now, what would it have done? She probably begged them the same way she did me. Told them that she would deny everything, that all it would do is make the situation worse. And they probably gave the same arguments that I did, but in the end, like my sister, Cathay Always got her way. Something about her you can’t say no to.

After the meet and greet with everyone, I was getting tired. I hadn’t had many social interactions since my accident, and honestly, I preferred it that way. I said goodbye to Cathy and she looked sad and asked where I was going. I told her I was headed home and she offered me a ride. Since riding was a helluva lot better than walking, I wasn't gonna say no. We chit-chatted on the way home. She was happy. Her smile lit up the dirty streets we rode down. We made it to the apartment complex, and as I tried to get out, she called my name. I looked at her and saw her blush, and the air turned as thick as water. I watched it happen but couldn’t move. I blinked and my vision overlapped. Memories of the car melded into my sight. I couldn’t breathe. The car raced down the highway just as she leaned forward. And I was caught like a rabbit in a trap. Her lips reached me at the same time the car did, and the impact was just as strong. Her hands graced my cheeks as the wind once did, and in both my memory and in the passenger seat of Cathy’s car, I was sent flying.

My entire left side flexed at that moment. My hand clenched and my leg locked out. It jerked me away from her, breaking the kiss and all memories of my accident crept back into the hole they crawled out of. My left side relaxed and I was left weak and numb. She looked shocked and maybe a bit nervous. I stammered out that my left side has been trying to heal and it's been moving on its own. She looked a bit better, but only a bit. I then tried to get out the car only to find my face hitting the asphalt. She got out and helped me up, brushing me off, doting on me like I was a toddler and despite the embarrassment, I enjoyed itI told her that my entire left side went numb and she insisted on helping me to my room. We trudged up the stairs, forgetting that awkward moment and laughing all the way. She helped me into my recliner and insisted on making sure I was taken care of. She cleaned the blood off my face, doctored up my elbows, even went as far as grabbing me a water. I told her to grab me a beer, but she said that water would be better and wouldn’t budge. She then just started doing simple things around my place, like doing the dishes or taking out the trash. It wasn’t unusual for her, she usually helped me, but she looked nervous.

I called out to her and told her that if she was worried I was going to tell her parents about what happened, there was no need to worry at all. I wouldn’t tell a soul. She said it wasn’t that. She was worried if I liked the kiss or not, and if she kissed me again, would the same thing happen. And for some reason, I told her that I did like it, and there was only one way to find out. She walked over to me, blushing, and kissed me again. I didn’t break away this time. We kept kissing and I used my good hand to pull her into my lap. Her hands left my body and started undoing her shirt. It came off, followed by her bra, then my shirt. Both of us were caught in a moment, one that was shattered by the ring of a cell phone. She answered and it sounded like one of her friends I had met earlier. They talked while I held her. They weren’t on the phone long. She had to leave to go meet up with a group of friends. She kissed me with a promise of picking up where we left off, then put on her clothes and left me alone with my thoughts. And as I write down my thoughts with my good hand, I watch in horror as my left twitches on its own

I think in any other season Hayes and chelsea would be fine. But the lack of a proper pre-season where Hayes could drill the squad to cover the space left by Harder and/or Ji is going to be a serious issue if she wants to play them both. I think for the short term try Harder as the 10 and use Ingle and Leupolz together maybe with Cuthbert or Guro in the midfield with them and play England or Kerr with Kirby in front of Harder.

Mhmm, her late signing meaning no preseason games or even training together whatsoever is going to make there be suffering at least to begin with. Maybe people should have expected this more. Sounds like some pointers hayes should be hearing too!
