In Churchill, Manitoba (Northern Canada), one of the few towns where polar bears roam freely, it is common (and strongly encouraged) for residents to leave their car doors unlocked. This practice is not due to negligence but is instead a crucial safety measure - in the event of an unexpected encounter with one of these massive predators, the person can quickly seek shelter in a nearby vehicle. Known as the "Polar Bear Capital of the World," Churchill faces unique challenges in coexisting with wildlife, prompting the community to adopt unusual strategies in effort to ensure the safety of people, as well as of wildlife.

Shoutout to the guy who threw hands with a wild polar bear to save his wife!

No hesitation, just charged into a fistfight with an apex hypercarnivore to save his spouse. Kept fighting long enough for a neighbor to grab a gun and shoot it.

The wife is okay and the man is in the hospital with severe injuries but is expected to recover. He’s also going to have some epic battle scars and possibly songs sung of his valor for the next few generations.

(This is not a picture of the actual man who fought the bear but it is a terrifying display of how fucking bad his odds were walking in to that fight.)

Side Note: Sir? Sir. SIR!!! These are absolutely not the bears you should be fighting shirtless. Please go back to Grindr or the club for that type of bear action.

The bear vs man in the woods thing is whatever, but it's wild when people treat bears as interchangeable. They are not! A grizzly will absolutely kill you, but a black bear probably just wants your Cheetos. Meanwhile, polar bears want to eat you and wear your skin.

Bear Ranking List

I have recently just finished seeing all of the types of bear, completing the set in Nashville. I will now be ranking all subdivisions of Bear. Most of these I have only seen in captivity, but I have seen a few in the wild.

Oh yeah I do mean actual literal bears. Like the animal bears. Not the big hairy dude bears. Sorry to any men lovers out there. Except the furries I guess.

Without further ado...

8) Asian Black Bear/Moon Bear

Some of this may be ignorance. I am far less familiar with these folks than I should be. But they blend into the background compared to the other Bears of the region. To be clear, there are no bad bears. The Asian Black Bear is still chill.

7) Sloth Bear

I mean it is hard to argue against sloth, the cutest of the seven deadly sins. Really more of an anteater bear though, which of course also meants termite eater. Occaisonally has to fight off tigers to avoid being lunch.

6) Sun Bear

Gangly looking fuckers. Not afraid of bees. Huge claws specialized for hive destruction and climbing. Long tounge for honey aquisition. The smol bear, but does not need your protection thank you very much.

5) Spectacled Bear

The last bear I saw, at the Nashville Zoo. The sole South American Representative. Likes cloud forests and climbing. "Spectacled" is just so fun to say, that gets it some points.

4) American Black Bear

Opportunistic little fuckers, these guys are eveywhere. There are apparently more than twice as many of them than of all other bears. Curious, but easily spooked.

3) Giant Panda

Iconic? No doubt. Had to put it high because of that. But a little too big for their britches. Don't even have bear in their offical name. Cute as fuck ofc, and visually stunning.

2) Polar Bear

The true carnivore of the bunch. Will absolutely kill you if it decides it wants you dead. Majestic and endangered. A true northener, braving the ice to eat some seals. No notes.

1) Brown Bear

Not as numerous as the American Black Bear, but compensates with a massive range. The origin of the very word bear. Comes in sizes ranging from smol to fuck you that's huge. The star of Fat Bear Week. Icon.
